Walking in the sun and endless vastness of Africa 😃⁠ ⁠ In place I love is the Makgadikgadi Salt Pan in Botswana. An arid place, filled with a peaceful vibe. ⁠ ⁠ The Makgadikgadi Salt Pan is the largest expanse of salt pan terrain in the world. Technically, it is not one large pan but consists of many flat pans forming together. The largest of which is Sua, Nwetwe, and Nxai flat pan. The gorgeous Makgadikgadi Pans were once part of the old Makgadikgadi lake. It was an ancient lake that we believe in having covered an area of 80,000 km². It started drying up around 10,000 years ago, leaving behind a vast salt-encrusted pan. Unbelievably, during the dry season, when the flat pan is dehydrated, it hosts the world’s most massive zebra migration. The wet season is from January to March, by now maybe shifted as well in time! The salt pans then transform into lush wetlands. A significant contrast, indeed.⁠ ⁠ It is also home to the massive flamingo migration. I show you the way! ➡️ The Indian rhinoceros has one horn. Therefore we call it also Greater One-horned Rhino. It does not have two horns, like its relatives, the African rhinoceroses.⁠ ⁠ Their natural body armor looks like they should be dinosaurs. The plates are flexible; they shift while the rhino moves. Like their relatives in Africa, they hear exceptionally well, have a fantastic sense of smell, but lack good eyesight. The Indian rhinoceros is grazing while walking through the tall grassland in the northern parts of India. Its shoulder height can be up to 2 meters, as well as a body length of up to 3.5 meters. A colossal animal, indeed it is. Indian rhinos graze in the morning and evening. During the day they hang out in water or mud to escape the heat.⁠ ⁠ Their diet consists of grass, branches, leaves, sometimes fruit, and even water plants. Indian rhinos have predators. Not only us humans with poaching. Bengal tigers sometimes hunt young calves up to one year old. When a calf gets over one year of age, they are not vulnerable to nonhuman predators. Just big enough for a big fish 🐟. Pink-backed Pelican in the Okavango Delta.⁠ When the Okavango Delta had lots of water - a few moons ago - we came into an area that was full of birds of all sizes. They had their nests on bushes and trees, which were floating on the water. Sometimes you saw the island shaking, then you knew a crocodile is underneath shaking it. Sometimes a newborn chick fell into the water, eaten by the crocodiles.
