HOW TO MAKE MARSEILLE SOAP LAUNDRY DETERGENT WITH SODA CRYSTALS When we mention Savon de Marseille in France, thoughts immediately turn to images of grandmothers cleaning the household linen. And they were right! Savon de Marseille is a very efficient detergent and is effective both hot or cold. Here is how they made their Marseille soap laundry detergent: Ingredients To make 2 litres of laundry detergent, you will need the following items : 50g of white Savon de Marseille, grated or in shavings 2 litres of water 1 teaspoon of soda crystals 1 teaspoon of essential oil (lavender, tea tree, orange…) How to Make Marseille Soap Laundry Detergent Melt the savon de Marseille shavings in a big pan with the hot water (not boiling). Mix on low heat until the soap has completely dissolved and there are no lumps. Add the soda crystals while continuously stirring until they are fully incorporated. Take off the heat and leave it to cool. Add your essential oil of choice. Leave it to rest overnight, then add about a litre of warm water to thin out the mixture. Rinse out an old washing detergent bottle to avoid any risk of contamination from the old detergent. Pour the mixture into the bottle. Shake the bottle before each use and add about 100ml for each wash. Please Note: Soda crystals raise the water pH, so if you have hard water, i.e. lots of calcium, you will need to increase the dose to a bit more than 100ml for each wash.
