Navy spouse expectations

One of the things I struggled with early with being a Navy spouse (and now a Chief spouse) is, what are the rules? What’s expected of me? What do I have to do?

And the answer I seem to have discovered is: nothing, really. 

The spouse is a civilian and therefore can do whatever they damn well please. They can be as involved or not involved in the social stuff surrounding Navy/Chief life as they so choose. There may be some people who’ll talk shit, but they can suck it for the most part. 

As a group of spouses was describing what we should or should not wear to the Khaki Ball or Navy Ball, they gave examples of wardrobe “poor choices” some spouses have made. There are no hard-and-fast rules against those choices. You can wear whatever you want to these events. But you might get some looks and whispers if you’re outside the norm of what some people might expect. But if you’re feeling your hottest self, don’t let it bother you. 

I was told as a Chief wife now, I may be expected to host Thanksgiving or other holiday dinners for single Sailors who don’t have family around. Again, may be expected. But there’s nothing written anywhere that says I have to. Plenty of Navy/Chief wives have jobs and families and lives that keep them from being able to be involved in Navy events, and that’s totally cool. If I did host anything, I’d probably have it catered and at a place with more space than our apartment. There’s nothing that says it needs to be homemade and in your home. 

Some of this might be easy for me to say. I don’t live in base housing, I’m not that close to other spouses or military families. I don’t have to suffer stares or whispers, and it would probably tickle my funny bone if I did. There do seem to be plenty of people around who are more than happy to tell you what’s expected of you if you’d prefer to just go with the flow. Ask your Sailor what kinds of events they’ve gone to other military/Chief homes for if you’re looking for ideas on what to host if you do want to be more involved (holiday dinners, summer bbqs, game nights, etc). 

PS: Those wardrobe “poor choices” were showing off too much T&A, which, personally, I’d say is a poor choice for events with children present, sure, but the Khaki Ball with all grown ups? Show as much as you want, dang. We’re adults. Live your best life. 

They’ll never put me in charge of the Chief Spouse Association with my attitude, rofl.

New Navy GF

Hey guys! I’m starting this blog as a way to connect with those in similar situations as me and as a way to get through the difficult times ahead. 

First a little about us:

I’m dating a man who left for basic training on February 14th (great Valentine’s Day present).  He’s currently an aviation apprentice and we’ve been together for close to 3 years.  I am in college as a biology major hoping to get accepted into med school to become a surgeon.  The human body is my passion.  But the many years of school ahead of me make my relationship with my sailor even more difficult because I will most likely never be able to move around with him until after my residency.  

My SO is currently an E2 in Navy bootcamp.  HIs graduation is on April 14th (a little over 2 weeks away!!) and after that he is going to A school in Pensacola.  I currently do not know what his rate will be but I’m hoping to find out some time this week.  These past 2 months have been some of the most difficult of my life, not only because the man I love left for bootcamp and hasn’t been able to talk to me, but also due to situations I’ve faced where I wanted nothing more than my best friend there to help me. In the past 2 months I’ve had to face surgery, being on crutches, the depression of not being able to do the things I love because of the surgery, and the struggles of a new job, all without my best friend there to help me. 

I’m here for anyone who is a military SO.  I may not be able to answer any and all questions about military life yet but if you just need someone to talk to feel free to message me!

Left Behind in disbelief and in a state of confusion. This couldn’t be happening. It’s just all an illusion. We just talked, exchanged emails, you were coming home soon.
