It's him and Koala before they started dating! In their sophomore year. Ace took the picture, it was during the first party he was allowed to throw! Sabo has this posted up on his corkboard above his desk and they've been retaking it every year (except every year they get closer and closer. Their retake of this picture as seniors is very cute, Ace gagged when he had to take it; "Okay we get it we get it, you have a girlfriend, no need to fuck on camera—" Sabo, naturally, rolls his eyes and snatches the camera from him.)

I keep thinking about your high school AU!! So many possibilities! Detention together? Chem partners! Skipping class under the bleachers!! Gossip and rumors getting to Ace and Sabo?? You’re completely correct with the never-ending possibilities, but that detention one you mentioned stuck out to me. I’m going to do a proper comic later, but I managed to sneak in a little comic regarding that scenario because it made me laugh so much.

Secondly…. GUH I’m exposing myself so heavy here but I don’t really read fics for zosan 😅 I HAVE READ A FEW THAT ARE EXCELLENT! But naming them would be like someone asking me to name planets in the entire universe and me sticking to the milky way galaxy… chances are you already know the ones I’ve enjoyed !

I tend not to read for ships that I intend on writing, or regularly write for.

That being said, two I can name just off the top of my head that is in the Syllabus of One Piece University: Zosan Course, to me, is: Fuck, Marry, Kill (or, how Usopp becomes the best matchmaker of the sea without really trying) by adietxt and (nsfw heads up!) Dirty Boy by SweetyGreeny

Both fics are, as far as I recall, the first two zosan fics I ever read, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. It’s great writing and has characterisation that I typically prefer for the Zosan dynamic!

Also worth mentioning that for me, my recs usually hinge on how much a fic makes me laugh. These two made me laugh + all the other emotions! If anyone else has recs for anon feel free to leave them in the replies…I might peek and start reading, too…

I draw whatever I'm in the mood for. Right now, it's Lawsan for probably a few more posts and then I'll return to Gen art of character drawings or single illustration ship art when I have the time; usually of Zosan or LawLu.

I'm pretty busy right now and the LawLu highschool comics usually took like a week for me to plan and draw out (amidst everything else I have to do through the week) so I don't know if I want to commit to those again just yet. Maybe some other time, but admittedly I was drawing the LawLu HS AU during a pretty shitty time in my life and all I could bring myself to churn out was messy sketches with a basic narrative to it. I get more anxious about continuing something that I feel was not up to my standard of quality when there are more eyes now looking at it than before.

Sorry this is wordy! I've gotten........ a lot of people DMing me or sending me asks about the LawLu HS AU and I feel like I should probably just answer all in one go at this point. It's a fun AU, I want to continue it, I had plenty of ideas for it, but it's just not a priority for me right now. I don't want to promise consistent updates or hint at it and then let anyone down. Hope you understand :')

I love thinking that Luffy doesn’t quite process jealousy as an emotion? Like he feels it for trivial things, but it’s always been more a feeling of ‘frustration’ than jealousy (e.g: Luffy wanting to blow the whistle during basketball games and Zoro being like ? Dude we’re literally playing what are you talking about.) so when he does find out Kidd and Law used to date, and he sees Kidd and has this ugly feeling in his chest and stomach he’s just like. Oh. I just really do not like Kidd, and I don’t know why (aside from the obvious reasons of Kidd teasing him etc. but this feels different)

(Edit: I figured out what I was trying to say irt the frustration thing - Luffy can’t make sense of jealousy in this context because he technically - for all intents and purposes - already HAS ‘the whistle’ (Law, in this case) so he doesn’t know why he’s still frustrated by Kidd. Does that make sense? He understands frustration over the absence of something he wants, but enter this into the equation, and now he’s confused)

I’ve had this draft of Luffy seeing Kidd during practice and just, canon-typical gag violence style hitting him, and Kidd is like wtf, and they get into it 😂 Zoro is like Luffy why are we fighting?!

Luffy: I don’t know!!!!

Zoro: *pauses. Shrugs. Joins the fight*

It’ll definitely be elaborated on later. Maybe a scene between Kidd and Luffy in the nurses office where Kidd is like ew this is about Law? Dude have him, it’s your funeral.

Oooh anon, good you brought it up - I just realised I vaguely elaborated on this on twitter but didn't get the chance to here.

(Although I want to preface, these types of details are totally up for interpretation, I'm never stingy about it. If you like the idea that he beat the shit out of bullies, by all means, I wouldn't put it past him - he's a moody teen and probably takes huge issue with stuff like that since people have attempted to subject him to it at times. I definitely considered giving him some history as a delinquent, more as a 14-16 year old than the current HSAU timeline, but that's a whole other story)

First, I just want to clarify the obvious - no highschooler looks like that, the comic was done through Luffy's POV so it's absolutely a hyper-fantasized version of whatever Luffy was seeing, which was a lot more muscle definition than there actually was 😂

That isn't to say Law ISN'T fit for this AU - Law's reason for being fit is... pretty silly, maybe, but it's because Law was pretty active as a kid anyway because Corazon was - da-dum - a professional volleyball player, and would practice with Law as a pasttime together.

As Law grew older and out of playing volleyball (although just to note - Law is great at the sport, just doesn't care to play it in highschool), Corazon just made him adopt a casual habit of fitting exercise into his week ("if you're not going to go out and see some sunlight, then at least eat your vitamin D gummies and fit in some activity during the day" etc. Appropriately health conscious since he's an ex-athlete. He's okay with Law doing whatever he wants so long as he's happy, safe, and healthy to the best of his abilities.)

On top of that, Corazon is a pretty big guy, makes pretty big portions for dinner, and as a result, Law (also being a pretty tall guy) eats a lot too. It's both passive and intentional effort, maintaining his physique.

YOU OPENED THE FLOODGATES, I'm going to elaborate EVEN more for something that might feel irrelevant, but you're totally free to skip this part if you want to avoid HSAU "spoilers" 😂

Law and Kidd used to date, and since Kidd (big, buff guy) enjoyed the gym and eating lots, Law would just go with him and they'd make dates out of it because they never went on "proper" dates anyway (candle lit dinners? Sitting in the park? Kidd vc: "That's some sappy loser shit")

Also this Ask gives me an excuse to mention how I was going to draw a mini comic where Kidd looks over at Law’s journal in class (when he was originally writing the poem) and going ‘oh my god Trafalgar you are such a fucking dork I can’t—‘ and them beginning to bicker until they both get detention…. I get such a kick out of Law’s ex seeing Law be such a lovesick boy-failure over a guy like Luffy and just being like HOW DOES YOUR TASTE GO FROM ME TO…. THAT.

Totally! This was the original, I was going to add the doodles around this one too but I figured I’d manage the poem first before drawing

To me this was quite funny and dramatic as is, and edged juuuusst on the line of ‘almost can be taken seriously’ which made it even funnier for me (like oh. Oh dear he’s so close but he’s also so desperately… a dramatic teenage boy that’s heart broken over his crush LITERALLY JUST TALKING to another person that all of this just seems smarmy to himself, if that makes sense) 🤣 in any case I like the poem that I went with - I agree with my friend that perhaps this one seems a little too serious for what I was intending, but it makes me giggle anyway!

Good question!

The why:

I think to summarize it, they were young and silly and both wanted to act mature but had opposite impressions of what ‘being mature’ was. For Kidd, traditional romance is naive and the act of liking someone can only be earnest if it’s not ‘performative’, whereas for Law, that type of formal pursuit is something he both wants and thinks is the appropriate way of showing someone you care for them. Both are incorrect in their own ways, but they’re also just two different people (teens, even) who want two different things from relationships trying to make it work because at their core, they’re young and immature, and don’t realise that sometimes liking someone doesn’t mean you’re compatible romantically. Whomp whomp.

It’s something that they both realise better when they’re slightly older (current timeline, for example) where Kidd’s mentality with Law was slightly skewed because it was a vaguely romantic pursuit from the beginning for Kidd, so any act of romance would have seemed to him like it was part of that pursuit (which Kidd stubbornly would insist is against his ideology) whereas you see Kidd be more tolerant of it with Killer, who 1) he has known for longer, therefore there was no need for romantic pursuit to recognise those feelings for each other, which is a ‘truer’ love to Kidd than what it was for him and Law and 2) I… like to assume Killer kind of just. Doesn’t really let Kidd reject romance as adamantly 😂 for Kidd it’s ‘no I do all the nice things I do because I like you, not because I want you to like me!’ And Killer’s like, ‘yes. Me too.’ And passes him a bouquet that has Kidd blushing and stammering angrily 🤣❤️ I mention Kidd/Killer to highlight the difference between that and KiddLaw

The how:

Amicably. As amicably as it can be for a guy like Kidd. I haven’t quite figured out how I’m going to write it, but Kidd and Law have gone through a lot of major points of their young teen years together! They matter to each other, even if they deny it! And they’d never admit it but if the other needed anything, they would help out, definitely (albeit begrudgingly, but that’s half a facade 😂)

Most likely, it happens after they find that they’re talking to each other less and getting into arguments over insignificant things more, one about the best album of a certain artist being the last one they have before they pause in the middle of the argument (that has long stopped being about the album) and just. Exchange a look that says, ah, it’s at the end of it, isn’t it? So they break up like that. ‘Over an album’.

Law verges on tears throughout the next couple of days out of principle, but he’s vaguely fine after that, pangs of sadness come in waves but go decently quickly, and Kidd just looks kind of out of himself for the next week or so until he goes back to normal and eventually they just stops meeting each other’s eyes in school. It’s awkward for the remaining months of school, but summer comes and goes and by the time they’re back in school it’s just kind of a non-acknowledgement of each other, barring the few times they have to interact (in which case, Kidd will passively tease him, and Law will make a face, a little reminiscent of how they used to be.)

I dont hate the over protected ace angle but it always felt like it gets way over done you know. I like your version hella alot better of ace looking out for his bro and is supportive. Like sure ace will probably kill law if he ever hurt is brother but he isnt gonna get in the way of them being together or anything

Wow! I’m surprised to hear that’s the angle that’s been usually taken with how Ace reacts to Luffy’s love interests! I’m moderately new to this fandom so I didn’t know!

I suppose I always just figured that Ace trusts Luffy to handle things himself when he needs to. Sure, Luffy isn’t the brightest bulb, but I think he’s pretty capable all things considered, and I think Ace knows that!

Perhaps I’m projecting my own experience, too. I have an older brother with more or less the same age gap that Luffy and Ace have, and we have a great relationship - he’s never been over protective when I’ve had boyfriends and I appreciate him for it, he’s always been on good terms with them and was very helpful in giving advice if I asked for it. I guess I’m writing what I know! And that experience might be totally different for others, which might explain the different characterisation.

Also I think for These Characters Specifically, I felt like Ace would more likely relate to Luffy in a ‘dude, I’ve been there, listen to your big bro so you don’t make the same mistakes I do 😁’ type of way. Like, Ace gets it! He’s not a hypocrite! People are hot! Real! 😂😂

Also also, I always figured it was different for siblings where they’re both guys. I have a few queer guy friends in relationships who also have older brothers, so occasionally that acts as a marker for my characterisation too – it’s just teasing here and there, but never anything serious.

Also also also, I like to imagine Sabo and Ace getting a kick out of teasing Luffy when they’re up late at night talking about it, and how would they do that if not for the occasional banterous cock-blocking and making Luffy feel lightly embarrassed when Law is around! They’re older brothers! That’s their job!!! 😂

Anyway, I’m glad you enjoy my characterisation of it! I think a great part of fandom is the different lens we can view all these dynamics in, but I’m glad this one resonates with you! It’s the one I enjoy writing most! ❤️

I love the Luffy liking goths propaganda (or just him seeing Law in Boa) idea. I don't know if that's what was implied but I think the whole thing is incredibly cute regardless!!! You're wonderful fr!!!

It absolutely was what was implied! (I'm being so much more explicit about my intentions with Boa in that comic here than on Twitter, lol, I just assume less people will see it here 😆) My general thought process is that Luffy likes Law, so now, since all emo related aesthetics remind him of Law, he just likes that aesthetic on people.

Also, I know canon implies otherwise as far as his attraction to Boa goes (and that is (mostly) respected in this AU as well), but I KNOW Luffy can acknowledge when someone is pretty without being attracted to them!! If I remember correctly, he was on the chopping block and asked... Buggy? "Who's that pretty lady next to you?" or something along those lines, it's been a while since I read that early on in the series. He has funny dialogue beats. Anyway, this is a convoluted way of saying he thinks Boa's pretty, but his gaze settles solely because she's Law-coded 🤣🤣 And why he goes up to talk to her at all will be revealed soon enough, it's MUCH sweeter when that comic can be reread with future context.

It's meant to be a sweet interaction, so I'm very glad you found it cute! Luffy innocently going up to Boa with no intentions of chatting her up, rather just tell her he likes her nails (and earrings and clothes and where did you buy those—Ah. spoilers, I won't say fufu) I know being upset for Law is easy when he's hiding under his hands and Going Through It™️ but, hand on my heart, I promise he was meant to look more humorously dramatic than it came out 🤣❤️ LAUGH AT HIM!
