Re: Minimum Staffing in Writers Rooms in the WGA 2023 contract
Let's start this off with what the deal looks like on minimum room size:

Ok, so I wondered a bit about the minimum staffing in the contract myself. It seemed a little small, and I got a little confused with the writer-producer bit*. So here's something I just saw (reply to it incoming):
*Writer-producer is a new tier added this contract, as is stated in a tweet later in this post.

That was is background to the next two tweets. I will say, someone pointed out how stupid only 6 episode series would be an incredibly stupid and unprofitable business model.

But anywho, here's some interesting stuff about room sizes of other shows that's what got me down that path (keep in mind, I don't think these two saw the person's explanation).

I haven't listened to this (yet?), but here's a podcast from one of the WGA NegComm members - John August - that apparently goes over the contract in technical speak:

This writer also did Honest Apple, another pretty "meh" episode. It seems Kevin Lappin is biting off more than he can chew with characters that need proper nuance in order to get right (Applejack and Trixie and to a certain extent Starlight) and it just falls flat. I hope he gets better at writing these characters and he doesn't become another Neal Dusedeau.
Honest Apple wasn’t super great, but it did get propped up by some great character design and that amazing moment with Strawberry Sunrise, at least :v
And yeah, it does feel like he’s stumbling into Neal Dusedau territory: misinterpreting the show as like any other cartoon where the status quo snaps back to normal after every story and therefore consequences don’t matter. But in MLP, the status quo is always changing, characters grow and evolve, and their actions matter. At least Kevin’s stories do involve stuff happening, as opposed to Neal’s stories that played out more like sitcom episodes.
