My prize!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I bought my fainting couch a chair companion. That's probably not haunted. And by that I mean that I'm suspicious that it might be haunted. Those people were WAYYYY too happy to be rid of it 🤔
Me: Oh wow! 😍 Look at that chair?
All the people in the booth at once: You like this chair?? Please take it with you! $20 please just take it!
Me: Okay. Can I get it on our way out?
Chair lady 1: Yeah. I'll just put it by this tree.
Chair lady 2: No one will take it.
Chair lady 3: Yeah, no one.
They all seemed relieved when I returned and they ran and grabbed the chair and physically put it in my arms and I had to carry it about a quarter of a mile back to the car. Maybe they just didn't want to pack it back up or maybe it's cursed? I'll find out I guess 🤷‍♀️

Don't know... not in a good mood, can't take headaches cause they make it so I can't think. Makes it hard to fix them cause then I can't think on top of my normal trouble eating. Probably gonna try to go to bed soon, though I know if I don't fix it sleeping doesn't fix it and I just wake up with a worse headache so I don't know
Tired, just tired. Been hungry since I was little. So many nights with hunger headaches. Move out, you know, still suck at looking after myself, but I'm out
Then my mom messes up the trailer so bad (like how it was through my teens when I was there, but for more years), so she just decides she's living on my couch at my apartment now (destroys the couch, gotta like redo the joints and reupholster it someday)
Find the last affordable house in the US and get it despite being a no job loser, but have to bring my mom cause like she costs me like $6000 paying off payday loans for her when she's on her own
Scrape the last of my money to pay off the $10k car loan, go clean the trailer out (get nothing for it, not a cent, just yelled at by my grandma... actually got yelled at for paying off the car loan too)
Then at the end of it all, my mom blows through her disability payment apparently among other things buying more of those damn cleaning supplies I'm overflowing with, but heaven forbid her kid who clean up all her mess and got her in a livable situation and like... literally lets her live in the house he bought... like screw him, why the hell should he eat?
Pathetic asshole never was taught to cook (or clean, just had to wing all that) and hasn't had it in him to learn how cause he can barely get out of bed, so like... kind of depends on getting meals. But like if his insomnia has him asleep and you're hungry, eat up (fine) and then when he wakes up like... screw him, no need to make sure he has something to eat
Just tired. Exactly how it was when I was a kid, not even kidding. i don't know... guess i just cant escape how things are... guess thats just my place in theworld. worthless trash no skill bottomfeeder who doesn't matter a damn bit

A Red Bird Refinished
Tumblr media
In this weekly spotlight series, we visit the unique and family-oriented styles of A Red Bird Refinished, a hidden gem nestled just 30 minutes outside of Chicago’s bustling, downtown area. Debby Albrecht and Caitlin Young are the perfect dynamic, mother-daughter duo, who bring wit and charm to the small business life. Only a little over a year old, A Red Bird began with the upholstery and refinishing of Albrecht and Young’s own furniture. Debby, the “woman behind it all”, has been a seamstress for years, and found both joy and an outlet for her creativity. Once it was clear that the two of them possessed an incredible talent for it, family and friends were eager to put in their orders for designs as well! They became so busy that Debby was able to leave her full time job, which lacked that “creative side” to it, and start making A Red Bird her full time job. From there, they were able to get almost the whole family involved in both big and small ways, working together to bring A Red Bird to homes and communities around the Great Lakes. From wooden furniture and 1800s chaise lounges, to poofs and personally designed laptop bags, it seems that A Red Bird may have it all! Explore their News and Gallery on Facebook.com Here! How did A Red Bird get Started? Debby’s full time job before A Red Bird was “rewarding but not creative,” and did not allow her to stretch her limits into the realm of possibilities that A Red Bird Refinished has become. Once it was clear that there was not only a demand, but a surplus of orders, Debby decided to make Red Bird her full time job! Debby and Caitlin are the “main pair” in the family business, and they are sure to get the job done! Accompanied by family around the world, like Danielle Albrecht writing all the way from Egypt, and their husbands’ occasional delivery crew, the “Red Birds on the Fly”, they have created an elite, family team of entrepreneurs! Even the name A Red Bird was inspired by Debby’s mother, a woman who knew what it was like to find beauty in the world around us, and how to have faith in life, love and family. Family-oriented, family-inspired and family-run, Red Bird is the kind, caring and cozy sort of business that anyone would be lucky to work with.

Debby and Demetrius II hard at work! How do these designs and Projects get where they’re going? Whether it’s by SUV, rented truck or something you pick up yourself, A Red Bird will make sure each piece is carefully handled and transported where it needs to go! When I asked them how they were able to transport such large pieces of furniture, such as “Scarlett” the 1800s chaise lounge, Caitlin said that they have an SUV of their own and “we’re often surprised what can fit in there!” They dedicate a lot of time and energy to make sure that each piece gets where it needs to go in the safest, fastest way possible.
Tumblr media
“Red Bird on the Fly” with husbands Daniel and Demetrius! What is the most Important Part of A Red Bird? “We love when the clients have a sentimental value,” says Debby. “To “take something and bring something beautiful to someone’s home,”. From the moment I spoke to them, I could tell that Caitlin and Debby were a pair of strong, caring women who would do anything for family. Perhaps most notably, for others’ families! They described that A Red Bird was about “keeping things out of landfills,” and being able to preserve long-forgotten, or even delicate pieces of family history that their clients would bring to them. They described the joy that they felt in being able to renew or prolong family heirlooms, furnitures or other items and objects passed down throughout the generations. Another amazing thing about A Red Bird is their attention to detail, and the heart that they put in. Though their primary goal is to restore a piece of furniture or item to a new glory so that it can be used or better admired, Caitlin and Debby know when to preserve a little bit of the past. “Every piece has a past, it’s owns story and minor cosmetic imperfections help tell that story so they are left intact,” – Red Bird Facebook.
Tumblr media
Caitlyn and her gorgeous baby, stitching away! What sets A Red Bird apart? A Red Bird not only takes great care and intricacy of detail into their work, but they also customize smaller projects, such as their new laptop bags and their many fantastic poofs. Not only are they homemade and hand-designed, these items are usually customizable by color, fabric, size and style. You’ll never see something twice from them, unless specially ordered of course. The charm only grows when you look over the past accomplishments and achievements earned by the A Red Bird family in just a short amount of time. Each piece of refinished or reupholstered furniture on their Facebook.com page, where they primarily do their business, has a name. Unlike large business chains or Amazon.com who would name their products long, strings of “keywords” to catch as many eyes as possible, Red Bird highlights each completed project with a charming, hand-picked name to match the personality or significance of the project. From a gorgeous rocking chair named “Jeanine”, to a couch and armchair set named “Chloe”, it is clear that each project does not only received great attention to detail in its refinishing, but holds a special place in the hearts of Albrecht and Young. This caring and gentle attention sets them apart from any chain store or large business only looking to move product as fast as possible. Instead, clients get to choose colors or designs on their projects or requested items. It lends a sense of collaboration and creativity to the business. This is why A Red Bird is your go-to for Great Lakes refinishing and homemade, hand-designed products!
Tumblr media
Chloe, a charming couch and armchair set
Tumblr media
Jeanine, your classic rocking chair What was one of Your Favorite Projects? Sometimes the projects that fall into A Red Bird’s lap aren’t simple, but that just “adds to the fun!”. Scarlett, an 1800s era chaise lounge “came to us in a rather dilapidated and indisposed state,”, says the A Red Bird team. It was a bare base frame with large exposed springs that teetered precariously to the left. Once they were confronted with this project, they rolled up their sleeves and got to work.Scarlett was all springs – it did come with a layer of “chainmail” it was “just a mess, it wasn’t usable,” so Debby’s husband was able to pull the top off. With a little extra help from family, Albrecht and Young were able to completely reconstruct Scarlett: “…we tightened and refinished the feet, re-tied the loosened springs, and layered her with fresh padding,”. They finished her off with a “Gone-with-the-Wind inspired chenille jacquard fabric,” and the results couldn’t be more enchanting! I imagine that Scarlett’s name came from the inspired, gorgeous fabric that they chose. This just goes to show that the team at A Red Bird is not only prepared to do more complicated projects, but have excellent taste, too!
Tumblr media
Scarlett in all her gorgeous glory! What is Next for A Red Bird Refinishing? Debby and Caitlin are interested in hosting their own events soon, “where all types of creatives can come together,” but haven’t been able to “narrow anything down yet,”. They are also looking into owning their own storefront someday to sell their amazing products. For now, Debby’s sister is opening a mercantile boutique called Finery and Finishes in Richmond Illinois that they hope to display some of their wares in. Also, A Red Bird has been fortunate enough to be contracted to refinish and update library furniture for the teens and kid sections of the Crown Point Library in Crown Point Indiana! It’s an “amazing opportunity” to showcase their work to the public, but also to help their community in an amazing way! In addition to their amazing, newly designed seat cushions, laptop and tote bags, Red Bird refinished is setting out to two markets that take place in the next few weeks: The first is the Hunt and Gather market taking place at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point Indiana. This event takes place on May 10th and 11th, and is guaranteed to be an amazing display of artisan crafts and designs, A Red Bird among them. The second market event is the Homewood Artisan Street Fair which takes place on June 7th and 8th in Homewood Illinois. Vendors from the Great Lakes region and all over will be in attendance, and Albrecht and Young are very excited to participate this year.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Rental Home
Hello, my wonderful friends! It’s really great to start this week with a new Beautiful Homes of Instagram and I know this one will inspire many readers.
Dani Ferretti of @GoldCoastCanvas is talented, brave and she is here to show us that we can make of our home a “home-sweet-home” wherever we are, regardless if it’s our forever home or a rental.
Please, make sure to follow her on Instagram (it will make her day!) and take notes on how she decorated her beautiful rental home!
Hey friends, Dani of @goldcoastcanvas here! I’m so humbled that Luciane reached out to me and it is truly an honor to be featured among such incredibly talented designers here on HomeBunch. I never would have imagined that our once plain-jane rental home would someday be worthy of this. I am feeling excited and grateful (and maybe a little bit like the new girl at the lunch table!).
My boyfriend Brad and I both grew up in South Florida and we are true barefoot, ocean-loving Florida kids at heart. We’ve both bounced around the country (and the globe) quite a bit since leaving home. We most recently moved to Austin, Texas where we’ll stay until it’s time to make the permanent move back home to Florida.
As you can imagine, being away from family and the ocean takes some adjusting to. This is why it was so important that our home in Austin, no matter how temporary, still have space for guests and still reflect that breezy lifestyle we love most. We chose a modern, new-construction home in South Austin not far from downtown. It was the perfect jumping off point for the activities we love most: hiking the greenbelt with our chocolate lab Soko, hitting up our favorite taco truck, or catching some waves at the surf park (yes, you can surf in the middle of Texas!)
I have always loved coastal decor, but it took me years to hone in on my true design aesthetic. Once I started focusing on how I wanted our home to feel rather than how I wanted it to look, everything clicked into place. For this house, I really wanted to create a home that felt like a sanctuary and that was easy to live in – where spaces felt organic and nothing was too precious. I think that is what makes coastal homes so appealing to me. They are meant for the happy messes of sandy feet and salty hair.
Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Rental Home
This is the talented homeowner, Dani, with her adorable dog. I am so proud of how she made of this rental a real home.
Home Location: Austin, Texas
Home Specs: Modern, 3 bed / 2.5 bath, 2000sqft

I have always loved coastal decor, but it took me years to hone in on my true design aesthetic. Once I started focusing on how I wanted our home to feel rather than how I wanted it to look, everything clicked into place.

I continued the neutral palette into the living room so as not to overwhelm the open space. I grounded it with an amazing collection of pillows from my favorite shops and an earthy, warm coffee table that everyone can gather around. We are just weeks away from getting a brand new custom sofa. I wish it had come in time for pictures but I’ll definitely be sharing it on my feed when it does arrive – so stay tuned!

Kitchen
The thing that sold me most on this house was the kitchen. As serial renters, we were used to dealing with suboptimal cooking spaces (our kitchen in our San Francisco apartment had about two feet of counter space!) This one felt like a long-awaited luxury to us. I softened the modern finishes with more organic selections like the vintage-inspired rug, aged cutting boards and handmade ceramic dishware.

Dining Area
Our dining room is small but I knew we needed a sizable table for big dinner gatherings. To make it work, I opted for benches that could be pushed under the table when not in use. I love how it created a cozy little nook on the wall side. The photos above the table are actually sketches of the different homes we’ve made memories in: Brad’s apartment in Sydney, the St. Louis bungalow my father grew up in and the 120 year old Victorian we lived in in San Francisco.

Upstairs, we have an open loft area that looks out over our living room. I work from home full-time and knew immediately that this would make a great office because it’s a defined space that still feels open to the rest of the house.
Rug
DIY
I wanted to do something unique with the alcove so we opted for some large, diy floating shelves and a gallery wall featuring some of our favorite pieces.
Desk: World Market – Also seen on these “Beautiful Homes of Instagram”: here & here.
Colors & Textures
While I stuck with earthy neutrals, I used this space as an opportunity to be a little more playful with color and pattern.

Button Pillow: West Elm – similar here.
Wide Mat Gallery Frame over armchair: Pottery Barn.
Guest Bedroom
Down the hall is our guest bedroom. I reupholstered an existing bed to give it a clean linen look like the one in our own room. This room really challenged me to flex my creative muscles and I love the unexpected combination of old and new. The aged metals, rugged handmade nightstands and modern decor accents all come together to create a space that I hope any guest can appreciate.

Rug: Loloi.
Wall Paint Color
Hardware: Amerock Bar Pulls in Sterling Nickel.
Prints by Marcelle Calder.
Counters: Cultured marble.
Faucets: Moen.
Master Bedroom
I took my time designing our master bedroom and it is my absolute favorite room in the house. I wanted to keep this room clean and simple, while still giving it enough layers to feel cozy. I stuck with two main colors – a blue/grey and cream – and brought things to life with lots of different textures. From the driftwood nightstands to the chunky cotton quilt to the faded rug, everything in this room is meant to feel a bit organic and weathered, yet still refined.
Paint Color & Bedding
Wall Color: Silver Drop by Behr.
Sunset Painting: McGee & Co.
Quilt: West Elm (I highly recommend bedding by West Elm).
Striped Bed Blanket in Gray: Evangeline Linens Pinstripe Blanket 100% Cotton – similar here & here.

Rug: Surya.
Nightstand
Nightstands are from Pottery Barn.
Nightstand Decor
Basket Tray (with books): here.
Vase: West Elm.
Table Lamps: Pottery Barn.
Master Bathroom
In our master bathroom, the contrast of the dark tiling and the white finishes adds a touch of drama. I kept decor simple with some minimalist palm prints and a faded vintage-inspired runner.
Rug: No longer available – similar here.
Cabinetry
Cabinets: Armstrong Sienna Cabinets in Alpine White.
Tile: 16 x 24 – existing – similar here, here & here.

Backyard
Having usable outdoor space was really important to us. However, when we moved in, our backyard was just a plain patch of grass. Since we’re renting, we worked with our landlord to come up with an affordable solution. With my dad’s help, we built this raised gravel patio ourselves!
Bistro Set: Ikea.
Outdoor Furniture
Outdoor Sectional: No longer available – Others: here, here, here, here, here, here & here.
Umbrella: here – similar.
Stool / Side Table: Safavieh.
Home-Sweet-Home
The new raised gravel patio ended up being a hit in the neighborhood and inevitably, all of our gatherings end up out here. I’m so glad we went for it! It serves as a reminder that no matter where you’re living at the moment, it’s always worth a little investment to make it feel like home. You don’t have to wait for your dream house!
Many thanks to Dani for sharing all of the details above.

The photos above the table are actually sketches of the different homes we’ve made memories in: Brad’s apartment in Sydney, the St. Louis bungalow my father grew up in and the 120 year old Victorian we lived in in San Francisco.

Backyard
Having usable outdoor space was really important to us. However, when we moved in, our backyard was just a plain patch of grass. Since we’re renting, we worked with our landlord to come up with an affordable solution. With my dad’s help, we built this raised gravel patio ourselves!

It serves as a reminder that no matter where you’re living at the moment, it’s always worth a little investment to make it feel like home. You don’t have to wait for your dream house!

When designer Mardi Ola purchased this property just two years ago, the 1982 fit out was still standing strong. She explains ‘it was awash with grey laminate!’ The site was originally the home of a Maples Stores (the yesteryear version of Myer, or Harvey Norman), and in 1978 was purchased by a group of Melbourne architects and developers. In 1980, the team converted the site into a group of apartments – in one of Australia’s first warehouse conversions (i.e the original hipsters!)
When Mardi moved in, she immediately stripped the space of internal walls, to bring her own identity to the spatial layout. She explains ‘as none of the internal walls are structural, it was relatively easy to reconfigure.’ Less easy,  was sawing through four layers of brickwork to drop the height of all of the windows… but it was worth the work!
Mardi came across the building almost twenty years ago when walking around the area with her eldest daughter Mia (now 20) in her stroller. ‘I was enamoured with it at the time, and knew that I definitely wanted to live here someday.’  The stars aligned as the apartment became available at just the moment Mardi was looking.
The home is adorned with an incredible collection of furniture, antiques, art and other treasured items Mardi has collected, and her ethos is to ‘make things as friendly and relaxed as possible, and as far away from the showroom aesthetic as possible.’ The Paul Evans cabinets, Platner armchairs and Columbo ‘Elda’ chair are particular favourites, in a mix-and-match of Mardi’s most adored possessions.
What strikes us most about this amazing home is its incredible use of texture and COLOUR!  Mardi has been so brave with her choices, layering rich gold curtains with lux silk carpets and moroccan rugs underfoot, and introducing teal wall panelling, alongside a palette of mustard, apricots, and even icy mint green, with cabinetry in emerald greens and grey… I could go on! The result is a home that is enviably refined, yet full of personality – a space with its own truly unique character.
Mardi is a self-proclaimed lighting obsessive, although she admits that ‘almost half of the lights are decorative here, as I quite like moving around in the semi-dark at night.’ Luckily, she knows the layout of the space like the back of her hand, so is unlikely to bump her toes or knock over an irreplaceable antique in the dark! She explains how the scale and volume of the space was both a gift and a challenge in configuring a liveable home. ‘I divided up areas with the use of Skyrange steel and glass walls, which give a sense of division, creating separate rooms without being closed off or blocking light.’ Warehouse conversion at its very best!

Where to Splurge and Where to Save in the Living Room
via Raoul Textiles
Think of all the things you do in your living room: playing board games with the fam, celebrating the holidays with your crew, drinking a much-needed bottle of wine (or three…) after a long day of work. Suffice it to say, your living room is where you, well, live! And as such, it’s crucial that it’s designed to suit both your busy life and killer style.
Alas, that’s a lot easier said than done, particularly when designing on a budget. So we decided to pool our network of interior designers for their tips on where to penny-pinch and where to indulge when tackling a living room. So read up, because with these insider tips, you’ll have slick digs with cash left over for a party!
Save: Decorative Objects + Pillows
A prime place to spare some dough is on decorative accents.“I like to save in the accessories department since those are things that are changed frequently,” says Amy Bennett. So don’t go all-in on a lavish vase that you’ll probably end up switching out for another one with the next bouquet anyway. Adriene M. Ged agrees: “Small accessories and throw pillows can easily be swapped out.” And since changing up these smaller elements in a living room is a handy way to reinvigorate the space, saving on accessories is a key area for cutting cash-corners.
  Splurge:  Seating
Just because you’re not the Mother of Dragons doesn’t mean you don’t deserve living room seating that is fit for a queen. “The biggest splurge-worthy item in a living room is the seating,” says Michelle Vosk. “What’s better than a super comfy, high quality sofa?” We think Tyrian Lannister would concur, and so does designer Rhiannon Gillis. She says that when it comes to a couch, “You want to spend money on something that you can have for years, that you love the look of, and the feel of.” Tammy Cody adds that the sofa is “where memories are made,” so it’s of paramount importance to invest in one that can support all of that emotional and bodily weight.

Save: Curtains
via Maybe Someday and Real Simple
For glorified strips of fabric hanging from poles, curtains certainly don’t come cheap. But Taylor Anderson says it’s possible to find affordable alternatives to expensive draperies. “Often times you can have simple curtains made for a fraction of the price, or your designer can help you find cheap substitutes,” she says.
Splurge: Rugs
via Apartment Therapy and Design Milk
An area rug can make or break a room, so our designers recommend budgeting with that in mind. “There is no better piece to make a big statement than your rug,” says Rhiannon. “Get something big, beautiful, and worth every penny. Everything else is easy to skimp on and still make work.” A room’s rug is meant to tie everything together and set the tone for the space. And I think we can all agree you want that tone to be chic and luxe, not drab and cheap.
  Save by Reupholstering
via Designstiles and Old Brand New
While we fully condone splurging on a quality couch and a lavish arm chair, our designers have also divulged a trusty trick for saving money when you want a change: reupholstery. Linnette Rolon says, “To save money for clients, I usually refinish or reupholster a good piece of furniture.” Amy Bennett suggests keeping your throw pillows but just buying new covers to freshen things up.
  Splurge on What You Love
via Apartment Therapy and House of Hipsters
Living rooms are the ultimate in-home-gallery for conversation pieces, so be on the lookout for wall art that tickles your fancy or an extravagant light fixture that just makes you smile. These statement elements are worth shelling out a bit more for because they’re the pieces that will bring you the most joy. “An item is (almost) always splurge-worthy if you really, really love it!” says Michelle. “If you feel your feelings when you see it, splurge away.” Gwendolyn Gibbish looks to inject a personal style statement in the living room with the perfect credenza. She says, “I like to do a unique piece here, something vintage to stand out and stand the test of time.” If it meets this criteria, then it totally deserves the investment.
