So what the Hell does Disney’s Hocus Pocus have to do with The Sandman?
Some people have questioned why I have shared Hocus Pocus content to my “Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman” Facebook group. It’s not just because it is Halloween related and Halloween aesthetics turn up a lot in The Sandman.  It very much all has to do with the Hecate.
Tumblr media
In Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman we have the Three-in-One, the Triple Goddess.  Hecataea (goddess(es) of witchcraft and magick, who also doubles as The Fates, and The Furies AKA The Kindly Ones.
Back in 1969 DC Comics introduced “The Three Witches” as the hosts of one of their horror anthology comics.   Cain, Abel, Lucien, Eve (The Raven Woman), The Mad Mod Witch (Fashion Thing), Destiny, and The Hecateae all started as hosts for the old horror anthology comics.  Cain hosted The House of Mystery.  Abel hosted The House of Secrets.  Lucien hosted Tales of Ghost Castle and the three Witches (Hecataea) hosted The Witching Hour.
Tumblr media
Here the Maiden, Mother, and Crone used the “Modern” names of Cynthia, Mildred, and Mordred.  To reaffirm that these are their new names, they tell these names to Morpheus in issue 2 of The Sandman.  Cynthia’s look was likely loosely inspired by Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Tumblr media
Three witches, or “Weird sisters” was a image popular in literature and folklore soldified thanks to the cultural influences of the likes of William Shakespeare with his own Weird Sisters.
The maiden, Mother, and Crone turn up a lot in pop culture, often unnoticed.
ere are the Wyrd Sisters from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld.
Granny Weatherwax (Crone), Nanny Ogg (Mother), Magrat Garlick (Maiden).
Tumblr media
Disney’s Gargoyles The Weird Sisters are   Luna, Phoebe, and Selene (a moon theme which is common with the three in one.  Waxing, full, and waning.)
Though the age distinction isn’t there it’s still a representation of the Three-in-One.  They are never separate and they function as one.  They also tend to appear the way they want to be seen or the way people expect them to be.  For example, when Demona was looking at them, they were a set of elderly female gargoyles but that is not how MacBeth saw them.
Tumblr media
Sabrina and her aunts.   This one might be a bit of a stretch but you have three witches who are rarely apart so you have the trifecta and Sabrina, herself, is clearly the maiden.  Though the Netflix Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ironically uses the aunts to pay homage to DC”s Cain and Abel I’ll use the sitcom version here.
Tumblr media
In the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina The Weird Sisters are literally Prudence, Agatha and Dorcas.
Tumblr media
The Addams Family features it, but it might be pure accident.   You have Wednesday (Maiden), Morticia (Mother), and Grandmama (Crone).
Tumblr media
Now we have the Hex Girls from Scooby Doo.  I Love this little “Eco Goth” band.  Not quite the conventional Maiden / Mother/ Crone however you could argue that Thorn is the Crone in this instance, Dusk is the maiden, and Luna is the mother. I pick these roles for purely superficial reasons here since Dusk has the child-like pigtails and Thorn is clearly the most dominant / leader and I perceive her as the oldest.
Tumblr media
There are the sisters of Charmed.   Not quote Maiden / Mother / Crone but definitely meant as a trio of witches who aren’t complete without the others.
Tumblr media
Adelaide (Crone), Auntie Whispers (Mother), and  Lorna (Maiden) from Over the Garden Wall.  This one is hard to spot until you realize the connection between Adelaide, Auntie Whispers, and Lorna.  Once you make the connection and realize the family bond and magick which binds the three you start to see the Maiden / Mother / and Crone aspects in their depictions.    Adelaide being the older sister, Auntie Whispers who is the mother figure for Lorne, who is the innocent maiden possessed by an evil spirit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another trio is The Witches of Eastwick though not quite Maiden, Mother, and Crone, it felt worth a mention.
Tumblr media
Marvel attempted it’s own version of “The Witches” with Jennifer Kale, Satana and Topaz.
Tumblr media
Though speaking of the Virgin Mary one could argue that it was actually a a subversive triple Goddess mention at the end of Goethe’s Faust Part 2.  When Faust ascends to Heaven we get this line:  (Translation from A. S. Kline)
“Virgin, Mother now, and Queen, Goddess, grant your mercies!“
and
“Here, grows to reality: The indescribable, Here, is done: Woman, eternal, 12110 Beckons us on.“
Tumblr media
The Norns (Marvel’s depiction of the three Fates).
Tumblr media
And now to Hocus Pocus.
In Disney’s Hocus Pocus you have The Sanderson Sisters.  A bungling group of witches who feel like they came crawling out of a horror anthology comic book with their antics and dark humor. Sarah is the Maiden, Mary is the Mother, and Winifred, The leader, is obviously the Crone.   (Note: Queen is a more polite alternate name for the crone aspect of the traditional three-in-one).
With Hocus Pocus, though I cannot prove it, I strongly suspect The Sanderson Sisters weren’t just inspired by the traditional Maiden, Mother, and Crone, but rather specifically the version from DC’s The Witching Hour comics, which in turn were used as the Hecataea in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.

Yonderland is the greatest and most bonkers show I've ever watched - there's a talking stick called Nick, a tuneantula, a glorious crone, and three completely incompetent henchdemons (Geoff, Rita, and Neil are icons, though).
The only normal thing about this show is pretty much every Simon Farnaby character getting naked...

Hi-Lo Arthuriana
Have a high interest in Arthurian Legend but low readability?
Here's a collection of adapted or abridged books to help ease you into the literary tradition. This list is ordered from simplest to most complex, beginning with picture books and ending with "translations" of Middle English texts into modern English or abridged versions of longer texts such as the Vulgate. Books in a series are numbered.
As always, if the book is still in print, I link to where you can legally purchase the book. Supporting living authors is very important! Otherwise, enjoy a PDF, on me, to keep the legacy of these authors alive.

Can I interest any of you fine folks in a Good Omens Fantasy AU which I'm affectionately naming The Oath AU?
Here there be a vague outline of the some stuff I jotted down earlier about it. It's vague for now but I'm working kn fleshing it out! I'm Working On The Longfic(tm) and possibly other bonus scenes and further adventures of theirs in this world if this hits a mark with folks and people actually read it.
Rambling under the read more! No CW or TWs I don't think...? Let's jump in!
It's DnD style fantasy (but dark, at the risk of sounding Edgy. This ain't the kind of DnD you'd play with a 13 year old cousin, for example. The world is harsh and unkind, and there be monsters in the woods, child. Inspird partly by Discworld, partly by FFXIV, especially the Endwalker expansion, partly by Mtghew Mercer, Exandria and his players and all their side content to do with Exandria, partly by Dungeons and Dragons shenanigans I've had over the years myself, and partly by the worlds Patrick Rothfuss and our beloved Neil Gaiman, amongst other authors i adore, come up with. Its a big mash of inspirations but km hoping to mold it into something coherent. )
Fiendish Blooded Sorceress and Druid Crowley - who can mold their body and appearance from the very essence of the earth and who transcends mortal ideas of gender and presentation, straddling the lines of male and female and both and none. They have appeared as maiden, mother, crone, ancient warlock, youthful child and more besides, giving rise to many rumours about her 'true' heritage.
Human Holy Knight of The Order Aziraphale - who has crusaded for years in the name of his Goddess, only to be faced with a moral dilemma. He was offered a priceless, holy artifact in exchange for a pact with a Devil - this pact, which has left him visibly facially scarred - dictates that he must kil one person, no more or less, for this Devil at a time and palce of the Devil's choosing. Until now, he hasn't been called to do such a thing... And he hopes that the Devil has forgotten about a lowly Soldier Knight such as himself.
Rituals! Sexy and very unsexy ones! There's a lot of this cos I'm exploring my own spirituality lately so. You get a ritual! You get a ritual! Everyone's naked and dancing! There's a fire! It's great! Until it isn't.
Probably Hurt/Comfort AND Whump.
This is an E rated AU bc everything I write has sex in it, but whatever! Maybe some light kink too, but I'll be guided by my muses on this. This is more story than smut anyway - the 'additional scenes' I may do if people like this AU? They'll be dirtier, lol.
I have Pinboards, Playlists soon, and no doubt a buttload of other worldbuildingy bits to come! Along with the fic et al of course. If you're interested I've made a tag on my blog for the AU where I'll try to remember to organise this stuff cos I'm really into this AU and really want to finish a longfic so I want you guys to hold me accountable tbh.
If you're interested, the tag is on this post and it's 'Good Omens Oath AU'. In time I would adore to commission artists for this project of mine, so if you're up for collaborating and will accept payment (I don't do trades usually cos you're worth money! Your time and art is too! But I could maybe be convinced...) I'd love to hear from you!

Are the steamies ready yet?
Also in my opinion the best Gordon voice is the AEG Gordon and the magic railroads voice actor they brought him back for AEG that’s how good he was.
Eh, not yet. There's still half of January to go and they'll all be awake. Also, yeah. Neil Crone makes such a good Gordon voice, though I like both the CGI Gordon's voice actor and the TATMR one.

The backstories of Morpheus’ Ravens
Matthew-  Formerly Matthew Cable. (Source Swamp Thing volume 2, mostly issue 84).    Matthew worked for the DDI (Department of defense intelligence) and was married to Abby Arcane (who would later be Swamp Thing’s Love interest). Matthew was not a very good man. He was an alcoholic and he was physically abusive to Abby.
Thanks to comic book shenanigans he briefly ended up with God-like powers.  But he ultimately ended up in a coma caused by a drunk driving accident.  While in his coma Matthew ended up in The Dreaming, in the cave owned by Eve (one of Morpheus’s minion, a former horror comics hostess who can look like a young woman, a middle aged woman, or an elderly woman at will). Her cave is not very far from The House of Mystery and The House of Secrets, near the Shores of the Seas of Night (The ocean of The Dreaming).  Eve likes to punish misogynistic men in their nightmares, it’s her specialty.
In the cave Matthew learns to not be so misogynistic and every time he becomes abusive toward Eve (who he dreams is his wife), she takes her crone form (which is improbably strong) and turns the tables on him.
In The Waking World Abby discovers that Matthew was taken to a corrupt hospital that was harvesting his organs while he’s still alive.   She finds him kept only alive by machines.  HIs body ravaged.  Most of his vital organs taken, even his eyes are gone.  Abby goes to turn his life support off out of mercy... In The Dreaming Matthew leaves Eve’s cave, crawling out after having learned his lessons. Morpheus meets him at the mouth of the cave and offers him the chance to serve him as his raven but he has to let go of his dying mortal life.
Matthew briefly wakes up just in time to shut off his life support systems himself so Abby doesn’t have to do it.  As Matthew dies he tells Abby to forgive him and forget him.
As a raven Matthew comes to prefer being a bird to being a man, deciding he makes a better raven than a person.
Tumblr media
__________________________
Jessamy - Not a lot is known about Jessamy’s past.  We know that she was Morpheus’s raven in the 1700s, and possibly earlier.   Her first appearance in the comics is in Thermador. She was very clever and helped to orchestrate the plan Johanna Constantine (eighteenth century character) needed in order to rescue Orpheus from the French revolutionaries. In the comics she’s a solid black raven.
Tumblr media
_______________________________   Aristeas - Also known as Aristeas The Raven and Aristeas The Poet.  Aristeas was a poet in Ancient Greece. This one was a real historic figure and figure of mythology.   It is believed that after he died he became a raven and served Apollo.  It’s a running gag in The Sandman comics that Morpheus is repeatedly mistaken as Apollo since Apollo was often believed to be the father of Orpheus and in The Sandman Orpheus is Morpheus’s son.  After serving Morpheus for two hundred and forty years Aristeas chose to return to the human world in the form of a man but found he couldn’t re-adjust to being human so he asked to return to being a raven.
Tumblr media
______________________________________
Lucien - Lucien (Lucienne in the TV show) is the first raven.  Lucien’s current form is likely not Lucien’s original form.  Lucien can still take raven form at will, as revealed in The Sandman issue known as The Hunt.
The Dreaming (1996-2002 comics) claimed that Lucien was a white raven who was punished for some offense and made black. And that he was probably also Adam from Adam and Eve but Neil Gaiman has since debunked the notion that Lucien was Adam. And that version of The Dreaming has been de-canonized and ignored.   No other comic has ever claimed Lucien was once a white raven.  He is, canonically, the first raven though.
That version of The Dreaming also gave Daniel a white raven named Tethys made from the soul of a dead alien who resided in The House of Secrets sub-basement. She was created to replace Matthew after he was accidentally shot by Lucien and chose to stay dead. She does not exist in any other comic. And Matthew is very much alive in current Sandman canon.
Delirium believes there have been “eleven and a half” ravens.
All of Morpheus's ravens were once mortal.   And he usually pays them with some sort of boon.  If they ever decide to not be his raven anymore they get the choice to either move on into the afterlife, or become a new dream entity, or become human again or to remain a raven and roam in that form but no longer serving Morpheus.
