A roadtrip
this was my first out-of-state roadtrip since the pandemic hit, and i honestly had some mixed feelings about the whole experience. since the lifting of restrictions and easing of life back to relative normalcy, i find it nearly impossible not to encounter a huge crowd of people gathering at a specific location. it’s a given that the long and dragged out lockdowns and restrictions have worn people out for the last two years, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to find people going out more and enjoying themselves at malls, restaurants, parks, and other public establishments. after a while, though, encountering hordes of people at literally everywhere you go becomes more than mere annoyance. it grates on my already frayed nerves. you think of some place secluded to drive to for the weekend, and chances are, there are already several families there. it should come as no surprise that our weekend at Bukit Fraser would be greeted with throngs of holidaymakers clogging the already narrow roads and limited real estate for holiday frolicking. yet, the sight of such a crowd unfortunately still greatly dampened my mood for a holiday, given that i already know what to expect beforehand. was i disappointed at the general public for wanting to relax and unwind? or was i disappointed at myself for feeling disappointed? i guess the months of isolation may have rewired my brain, and i wonder how long will it take to “unlearn” this penchant for negativity?
as a result of checking in later than we intended at our AirBnb (no thanks to the heavy traffic heading out of the city), all we did was stay in, cooked a late dinner, and watched Netflix until midnight. the following day, we sat at the balcony taking in the cool surrounding for the entire morning until check out. i had intended to check out the town square to take some photos, but we couldn’t even secure a parking spot, so in the end, we left and detoured to Kuala Kubu Bharu where i finally had a chance to finish my roll of film. it was barely a phototrip, and i find myself disappointed with the holiday-ing aspects of the trip, but spending the weekend with my friends was a definite highlight of the trip, and i guess it was still worth the trouble and disappointment. i hope that i didn’t bum them out too much with my lofty expectations for a roadtrip.

I have never seen another camera handle light like this one. It's so--soft. And also dramatic. Not a common combination.

Kuala Lumpur on Fomapan 400
i spent the last two months doing photowalks in the city in an attempt to finish my last few rolls of film. admittedly, it was a refreshing experience as i hardly take street photos in KL, owing to my local biases and whatnot. furthermore, it simply felt great to be out taking photos instead of staring at my PC monitor going through Flickr photostreams. one particular outing, i loaded a roll of expired Fomapan 400 and went to town with it. i’ve had these for about four years, my first few experimentations with it on the Holga 120N didn’t quite bear any exceptional results, and as a result, the remaining two rolls were shelved and left to expire in my dry box. a couple years after its expiration date, these are the results - the backing paper superimposed onto the film negative, and the additional “smudgy grains” create a messy and mostly unusable output. i wouldn’t say these photos are completely unusable, though they certainly weren’t what i expected, a far cry from the results i previously obtained from the Holga 120N. while it lacks in contrast and sharpness, it still serves as a cheaper ISO400 black and white alternative to the HP5, and the additional speed makes it suitable for my street photography purposes compared to the Fuji Neopan 100 Acros. i believe that if i choose to continue shooting film in the future, the Fomapan 400 might very well be my go-to film, taking into account its decent price and availability.
