i have distressed the shit out of my costume and after multiple runs in it, it desperately needs to be washed

Why does Jack dress nicer than all the other newsies?

Broadway established his look as long pants, a collared overshirt in a tasteful solid color, and a vest worn buttoned up. His costuming sets him apart from the rest of the newsies, signaling that he is someone who is 100% prepared for an adult girlfriend and a salary job. All he'd have to do to get respectable is remove the newsie cap.

Booooo! Fuck that!

I want to see Jack wearing pants with a big rip in one knee that he tried to sew up himself, pants he's grown out of that expose mismatched socks. I want to see him clash patterns. Make him look like the urchin Pulitzer says he is. It's 88 degrees; let the kid unbutton his overshirt! GIVE HIM BACK HIS BANDANA!

The fancy duds don't really make sense for the life Jack lives. But more than that, the buttoned-up shirt contradicts what the character represents to Katherine and David, who are so drawn to him, and what he represents to the audience.

LOOK. i love uksies more than i love being alive but i will be forever mad that we were robbed of bigger costume changes - davey and les and katherine should all have AT LEAST two outfits to demonstrate that they are a little better off than the other newsies who all probably have one shirt/one pair of pants each.

don't get me wrong I adore the outfits they all wear but costume changes help show the passage of time and character arcs davey needs to blend in more in act 2 than in act 1 etc

preliminary designs + notes/scrawl transcript:

her tie has the same value as jack’s shirt (and the same colour)

she’s wearing “sportswear” (though really it just means clothes to be active in)

she’s also wearing a newsboy cap :D

short hair was very fashionable in the 1920s (hence why she has short hair here wbwbwb)

”kit plumber” is her byline (because I love the name kit and also for shenanigans)

she wears practical clothing, but they’re still nicer and slightly more in fashion than what the average working late 20s woman would wear

also she wears oxfords (as her shoes)

the leftmost preliminary design is for her as davey knows her (Katherine Pulitzer, heiress and Dame With A Case). i’m not the happiest with it and probably will do more research/look into putting her in nightwear maybe

THERE’S ME!!! FINCH!!! we’re gonna dirty up the costumes and i’m gonna use the fabric from the sleeves we cut off to wrap around my wrists (cuz i have bad joints) and i’m gonna cover my tattoos and stuff. We have 16 days until opening night!!!

and also our race had a class in college with ben fankhauser???? and AKB just knows some of the people in my cast and he’s also an alumni of this theater???

Maybe this is a silly question, but why is it that everyone 100% seems to think the Delancey brothers are teens in Livesies? Before I got on tumblr, I thought they were grown-ass men.

Since we clearly can't judge the age of characters based on the age of the actors in this production, we only have the costuming and the writing to go by. In 1899, boys would have worn short pants or knickerbockers. Teens and adults would wear long pants. So historically speaking, that means all of Newsies besides Jack and David are coded as under 13. I don't think that's actually the intention, but in any case, because Morris and Oscar are wearing long pants, they look older than most of the boys they work with. In addition to the pants, the Delanceys wear brimmed hats instead of caps, and they have ties. These could be class markers (like Les's hat and David's tie) but they could also be age markers. I say the costumes are inconclusive.

But they got hired to beat up striking trolley workers (AKA grown men.) Why would you pay teens to try this? Imagine being 17 today and trying to beat up a bus driver. You would lose! In my mind, this is evidence that Oscar and Morris are at least in their early 20s, idk.

Also, since the play has given us a sympathetic rich main character in Kath, it has thrown out the "rich vs. poor" conflict and invested instead in "old vs. young." Why muddy the waters by making the frontline antagonists young?

Is there evidence these guys are teens that I'm missing? Fwiw, the actors who played Oscar and Morris in 92sies were 25 and 22 when it came out.

Newsies Halloween Costumes of 2023

HC that modern Jack throws giant Halloween parties every year and you must be in costume to enter.

Here’s what the kids go as:

Jack Kelly - Undead Cowboy

Always is sole variation of a Cowboy because of his childhood nickname. He’s done classic Cowboy, sexy cowboy, goth cowboy, futuristic cowboy and so forth. This year, he gets wasted first and professes his undying love to David, asking him to marry him before he passes out.

Racetrack Higgins - Barbie

Obviously. Race loves Barbie. He loves pink. And he loves the way his crush looks at him when he’s the brightest thing in the room. He’s gets super drunk, but not quite as drunk as Jack, but does way more weed than his brother and wakes up in Spot’s bed the next morning. ;)

David Jacobs - Dave.

This is his first time coming to the party, invited by Jack and told Jack he wasn't a costume guy but at the insistance of Jack, he slapped on a nametag, taking inspo from his favorite show and showing up as "Dave" instead of "David". It's more of a reference than a costume.

Spot Conlon - Vampire

Spot is Jack’s friend who secretly has a crush on his little brother. Spot doesn’t drink because he secretly values everyone’s safety, and when Race follows him home, he tucks him into bed and sleeps on the couch, texting Jack that he’s perfectly safe.

Katherine Plumber - Sexy Cat

Katherine is Jack closest friend in the world. The two previously dated and Katherine likes the simple but sexy costumes. Her and Sarah accidentally show up as sexy animals and they do go home together. But they’re also dating.

Crutchie Morris - Spiderman

Charlie is Jack’s oldest friend and shows up every year as a super hero because he’s a nerd and he always documents the party for everyone because he knows no one but Spot will remember it. He gets drunk, but he can hold his liquor.

Sarah Jacobs - Sexy Mouse

Sarah always grabs the first costume she can find and pretends like she put in the most effort. She has no idea her twin is coming to Jack’s party. She gets blackout drunk.
