Cam Newton Released from Patriots

Cam Newton has been one of the most inconsistent quarterbacks since his MVP season in 2015 and it finally caught up to him. This past Tuesday he was released by the Patriots and replaced by the young and upcoming rookie Mac Jones. This was a question throughout the offseason leading into draft day since Newtons underwhelming 2020 season. With the Patriots selecting a quarterback in the first round I think every ones question was answered. Cam Newton will likely get picked up by a team before the season starts up, but his production may continue to decline as he is going into his 10th season with no sign of high production value.

Final 2021 Preseason Game

Tonight is the last preseason game for the 2021 Denver Broncos, so I'll talk a bit more about what happened during the offseason.

Drew played well in the first preseason game, but Vic said he was more interested in watching the practices. After the second preseason game, Vic described Teddy as "Brady like". So it should come as no surprise, Vic named Teddy Bridgewater the starting quarterback.

Bronco talk was split on the decision. Drew fans are annoyed that he will not get another year to learn, practice and get better. They also point out that Teddy is on a one year deal, so after this season, we will go through all of this again.

But... Vic is on the hot seat from what I hear, so he needs a better quarterback now.

Why is Vic on the hot seat? Well, rank these former Bronco coaches from best to worst (Josh, Saban, Studesville, Vance, Vic). Studesville won 25% of his games, making him the worst. Saban is second worst, he only won 33% of his games. The order of the next three might surprise you. Vance won 34% of his games, Vic has won 38% of his games and Josh was the best, he won 40% of his games. Looking at those names while knowing that both Vance and Josh were both fired after two seasons for earning similar records. Vic is entering his third year as head coach of the Denver Broncos.

How did Vic get to three years and another reason Vic is on the hot seat. Vic's supporter, John Elway "stepped up" from general manager and out of the way. Allegedly he's in an executive advisory role now and may retire next year. Elway hired a new general manager, George Paton. Paton has no stake in Vic or Drew. The George hire seems to be paying off already for the Broncos. There was a draft day rumor that Arron Rogers would be traded to the Denver Broncos. This rumor seemed likely with Elway as GM, since Elway did sign a few, old, about to retire quarterbacks. George Paton didn't fall for the draft day stunt, but the message to Drew should have been loud and very clear. The Broncos are searching for a new quarterback.

Who is this new Vic we have seen this preseason? Vic has been calling more "risky" plays, which is great, but I doubt he'll call plays like this during the regular season. His play calling added to the quarterback "controversy" when he elected to go for it on a few fourth downs with Teddy, but not with Drew. If he had not gone for it on those fourth down plays, Teddy would not have scored any touchdowns and the Broncos might have lost the game and maybe, Drew would have been named the starter.

I'll end the 2021 preseason with this stat. The Broncos opponents this preseason are a combined 0-7. In total, they have been outscored by 80 points. The Broncos net this preseason is +54. If this pans out during the regular season, the Broncos will have a great year!
