August 7, 2018 is the 40th anniversary of President Carter declaring Love Canal a federal health emergency, the first time a man-made disaster was given that declaration. Occidental Chemical Corp., formerly Hooker Chemical and Plastics Corp., used the abandoned Love’s Canal in Niagara Falls for its waste in the 1940s and 1950s. They covered the 21,800 tons of World War II-era chemical byproducts with dirt, and sold the land to the City of Niagara Falls to build a school and a playground on. The emergency declarations led to the eventual evacuation of about 900 families and the bulldozing of an elementary school and two streets that had been built on the canal. "We were the one that broke open the lens for other poeple to see what was happning.. all of a sudden we were hearing of cases across the country,' Lois Gibbs told WBFO in an interview. Gibbs also voiced concerns that with the current federal government’s rolling back of environmental regulations in favor of businesses, not only could similar cleanups and remediations be stalled or stopped entirely, but fresh man-made disasters could be created that jeopardize the health and lives of entire communities. Check out Penelope Ploughman’s “Love Canal” in the Images of America series, or Richard Newman’s “Love Canal: A Toxic History from Colonial Times to the Present”. —————————— #gasstationburrito #lovecanal #niagarafalls #buffalony #buffalohistory #niagarafallshistory #toxicwaste #environment #environmentalprotection #epa #Historyofbuffalo #buffalohistory #buffaloforreal #historyofniagarafalls #niagarafallsforreal #hookerchemical #occidentalchemical #loisgibbs (at Love Canal) https://www.instagram.com/p/BmL36OIANMh/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=14bnavvakfmxe
