open starer; interactions with maya rousseau
location: twin soul courtyards
Tumblr media
Maya nestled on a cozy blanket spread beneath the shade of an ancient oak in the Twin Soul Courtyards. The air was alive with the soft hum of music, a tribute to her late husband's fondness for lively melodies. As she savored delicacies from a wicker basket, Maya's gaze wandered thoughtfully across the courtyard. Her son Nicholas, a bundle of youthful energy, had joined the other children in playful games nearby. Laughter and gleeful shouts punctuated the serene atmosphere, adding a joyous backdrop to the day's commemoration. "I miss you, Henri" she whispered softly, her gaze drifting to the clear blue sky above. "We would have loved this day together, celebrating your birthday with laughter and music. " Lost in her quiet contemplation, Maya remained unaware of the gentle presence beside her until her son pointed at someone from affair that picked his mother's interest. "My apologies, I hope you're enjoying the tranquility of the courtyards," she remarked softly, her voice carrying a warmth that invited conversation.

PERSONALITY:
Marcel is an easygoing man who is relaxed and laid back. He rarely gets angry and always finds a way to solve a problem. He is the breadwinner of his family and a caring person towards his loved ones. Marcel likes to spend time with his friends and his cousin Armando as he is also one of the heartthrobs of the village but his heart belongs to Leonora only. He may not be the smartest but at least he is on average. Marcel is known for being the guy who you could always count on and the friend that everyone wanted to be with. He is skilled in Arnis which he and Licia usually spar together as he learned along the way with the help of his friend's guidance. But once you get him into his bad side, he will never let you slide. Only a few people know what Marcel looks like when he's angry and it's best to keep him sane and relaxed.
BACKGROUND:
Marcel was born in Talisay, Cebu, Philippines from a low-income family. He was the only son of Nicholas and Florina Gonzalez and he felt alone and his mother couldn't bear a child anymore due to some complications. They moved to Tondo, Manila where his uncle Romulo let them stay at their second house, which was now handed to them. He and his cousin Armando don't get along that well which makes Ermelinda, his aunt, scold the two daily. He works with his parents at the farm and at the carpentry shop with Romulo and Armando to earn money at such an early age. He met Licia and her younger sister Agatha when they were spending time reading under the tree when Licia saw him getting a mango before falling on the ground, causing him to have some scars on his face due to his recklessness. Licia went to treat his wounds as Armando spotted the two together. Both cousins fight not just for their usual quarrels, but to get Licia's attention. As years pass by, he and Armando are on good terms as he befriends Javier Serrano, the son of a businessman who lives in a rich household but is a down-to-earth person. The four went to the same school as Marcel fell in love with a beautiful woman named Leonora Sanchez. He began to learn how to play the guitar with the help of his father who used to sing songs for his mother when he was courting Florina before. Marcel then goes to Leonora's house and sings love songs as a way of courting her and showing his feelings towards his soon-to-be lover. As he finished his studies and became a radio operator, he was reunited with Leonora as the two confessed their feelings and became lovebirds. When Marcel plans to marry her, the news strikes him when he finds out Leonora is being arranged with his high school rival and the son of a rich family, Ramil Belmonte who is Javier's acquaintance. Leonora doesn't like Ramil but her mother forces her to marry him, which Marcel doesn't want to cause any problems, and simply lets go of Leonora to follow her mother's wishes. Of course, it was a gut-wrenching decision as he could feel the guilt building inside him. Instead of fighting for his love, he lets that person he loves go.
He attends Leonora and Ramil's wedding, smiling a bit to see Leonora one last time before leaving the chapel. When WW2 came in, he joined the Philippine Scouts together with Armando and reunited with Javier soon after their deployment. When he heard about Licia's parents being held captive during the Bataan Death March, the three went after to look for her parents as he met Licia who was also trying to save her parents, and Agatha who became a comfort woman for the Japanese. They got separated when their plan of saving Ernesto and Lumina failed as Armando went with Licia and Marcel went with Javier. During their time in the jungle, Marcel and Javier see Leonora who is now a guerilla fighter which worries the two. He quickly goes up to Leonora, begging her to leave the Philippines for her own safety, but Leonora declines and she vows to herself that she will fight the war until her last breath. Marcel then got involved in a gunfight as he grabbed Leonora's hand and handed her to Javier, telling him to protect her while he and the other soldiers tried to repel the Japanese soldiers. As the IJA began to advance within the country, Marcel was now lost within the tropical forest where he met an American woman named Mirabelle Hawkins, a member of the US Army Nurse Corps who was seeking refuge in a nearby village outside the forest. The two stayed in an abandoned house as they hid from the Japanese soldiers. Mirabelle and Marcel began to have an exchange conversation with each other as Mirabelle felt pity for what he had been through, comforting him as she could. Her smile and sweet voice make Marcel feel like he's with Leonora, talking to him as they face this chaos together. This is where Marcel begins to have feelings for Mirabelle but he knows it will end up drastically for him so he keeps it to himself.
The two were spotted by the Japanese soldiers as they began to escape them, Marcel lost sight of Mirabelle but got reunited with Javier and his other comrades. Javier told Marcel that Leonora was in safe hands, meaning she was now with an American soldier he said that Leonora would still continue to fight until the war was over, which frustrated Marcel a bit but he calmed down soon after. Marcel found out that Armando died protecting Licia but she was later captured by the IJA as Marcel was starting to lose hope. As the years go by, Marcel becomes sick and gets fatigued while fighting the Japanese. As he was looking for an abandoned house for medicine, a portal suddenly opened and Marcel lost his balance and entered the portal. He was now inside a bunker where he saw Dr. Stefan von Hoffman and his assistant Dr. Alfred Fischer who was the one opening the portal. He also saw three men, that being Sgm. Lorenzo Beneventi, Cmdr. Elliott Rousseau, and Capt. Gavrilo Petrović. He was too sick to identify those people around him as he didn't realize that Mirabelle was there. Marcel slowly stood up while holding his rifle in a fragile manner before losing consciousness and dropping to the floor Gavrilo and Mirabelle quickly helped the unconscious lieutenant. As he was recovering from his sickness and fatigue, Stefan told him that he would need his help and the others for something crucial: Stopping Richtofen from his plans and retrieving the test subjects from his grasp. Stefan also told Marcel about a woman; implying that maybe Marcel knew about her until the doctor showed him a photo of Licia, which he quickly tells him that he knew her and is indeed her friend. As the other chosen people are being welcomed by the two German doctors, Marcel agrees to help them save Licia and go back to the Philippines together and live a normal life as the group, now called Salvatorix Crew, begins their chaotic journey into the lands of Aether.

Movies I watched this week (Year 4, week 8)
"Rudy calls me The Queen Of Auschwitz"...
After waiting for many months, I finally had a chance to watch Jonathan Glazer's transcendental The Zone of Interest. It's the most spine-chilling horror film I've ever seen, and I'll bet it will grow to become one of the greatest films of all time.
Making art about genocide is nearly impossible. Few Holocaust movies were able to tackle the topic honorably (Claude Lanzmann's epic Shoah', and Alain Resnais's 'Night and fog', both documentaries). But fictional dramas about concentration camps and Nazism are usually an affront against humanity. This one is different: Restraint, oppressive to the bone, ambient, extraordinarily disturbing. 9/10.
🍿
2 with Swedish actress Lena Olin:
🍿 Another film about the holocaust. One life is the directorial feature film debut of James Hawes, who directed two of my favorite 'Black Mirror' episodes ('Hated in the nation' and 'Smithereens'). Anthony Hopkins plays Nicholas Winton, who saved the lives of 699 Czech children by transferring them to England, just before the beginning of World War 2.
Watching Hopkins is always a delight, but unfortunately much of the film is a historical flash-back, a genre I dislike in principle. But even as much as I can't stand the period posturing and sub-par acting in the flash-back, the pathos and manipulation used here were so effective, it left me in tears for most of the film. 8/10.
🍿 The Adventures of Picasso is a Swedish surrealist comedy, very much in a 1970's absurdist style. Including a few lovely scenes (A dubbed Rossini duet, violinist Henri Rousseau ascending to heaven to the tune of 'I dream of 'Jenny', an excessive cauliflower farting performance) among mostly low-brow and stereotypical caricatures. Woody Allen did it better in 'Midnight in Paris'. 2/10.
🍿
And a third movie about related topic, Hitler Lives - Wow! A virulent anti-German propaganda film, originally written by Dr. Seuss and directed by Frank Capra, but which was remade by new director Don Siegel, and even went on to win the 1945 Oscar. Commissioned by the War Department, it was so over the top, that even George Patton walked out of the screening for top military brass, calling it 'Bullshit'.
['Today I learnt' that Don Siegel directed his first two movies in 1945, this and 'Star in the Night', and both of them won the Oscars, one for Short drama, and one for Short documentary!]
🍿
River, my second charming comedy by Japanese director Junta Yamaguchi (after his original 'Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes'). Like the previous one, it's a quirky "2 minute time loop" story, where every 2 minutes, time rewinds and everyone returns to where they were before. It takes some getting used to, but it's more relaxed [maybe because the location is a traditional inn, 'Ryokan', in a beautiful rural area]. The dozen participants adjust their responses to the Loop, and learn to behave accordingly. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
🍿
2 Korean police thrillers:
🍿 Cold eyes is about a team of surveillance officers tracking a gang of highly-sophisticated criminals. Excellent fast-action, cat and mouse plot (with improbable tech). 6/10.
🍿 The Outlaws is a fast action, brutal story of a gang war in seedy Chinatown in Seoul. Tough as nails and hard hitting, the captain in charge of the investigation goes against one of the most ruthless screen villains I've ever seen, a loan shark who likes to chop people's hands off. Lead officer Ma Dong Seok is relentless and uncompromising, and with the most powerful knock-out punches. The all-out brawl at the airport bathroom executed as well as the fight scenes from 'True Lies' and 'Terminator 2'.
The film was a big success in Korea, and they already made 3 sequels to it. 8/10 - My most entertaining surprise film of the week!
🍿
"Something is rotten in the State of Denmark".
Laurence Olivier's brilliant adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, the first British film to win the Oscar for 'Best Picture'. It got everything: A son avenging the murder of his father, a ghost story, incest and madness, suicide, poetry, politics of the day, as well as stunning photography in German Expressionist style. Also, a 'foppish courtier', tight tights for the men and giant protruding codpieces.
I wish I was much more versed with Elizabethan English, so that I could enjoy it even more.
🍿
Marlene Dietrich as a conniving murderess X 2:
🍿 First watch: Witness for the Prosecution, a terrific Billy Wilder drama with Charles Laughton and Marlene Dietrich, and with Tyrone Power in his final role. My dislike for pompous courtroom dramas was surpassed by the wit and fluidity of the Agatha Christie story. 8/10.
🍿 The 1950 Stage Fright was a mediocre Hitchcock Noir, with a similar set up, featuring a conspiring, duplicitous Marlene Dietrich as a remorseless co-conspirator to a murder. Not as engaging, or as staged. The most memorable performance in it was the 'Laziest Gal in Town' scene, which was parodied so well by Madeline Kahn. 3/10.
🍿
Re-watching 'Singing in the rain' X 2:
🍿 Another frequent re-watch: Nancy Meyers perfect feel-good hug, The intern. Meyers directed only 7 movies, but wrote nearly 20 romantic blockbusters. She's a superb screenwriter, and this is a marvelously-constructed bonbon. De Nero is super cute, and even Anne Hathaway is wonderful here. The relationship between them develops in stages so well. And it culminates with the heart-warming You Were Meant for Me scene at the Mark Hopkins Hotel. 10/10.
It's amusing to think how different this movie will be if Michael Caine and Tina Fey (or Reese Witherspoon) would play in it, as originally planned. That would actually be a good project for a 2026 A.I. "Alternative Version" re-make! ♻️
/ Female Director
🍿 So I had to watch Singing in the rain again. If there ever was a perfect musical, this is it. There isn't much I can say that hadn't been said before many times, so here:
The 'You were meant for me' scene which is the emotional center of the movie, happens (as it often does in well-timed Hollywood classics) at the 48:25 mark, precisely one hour before the end.
Gene Kelly wears this ridiculously-giant white chapeau. I don't even know what it's called.
The musical numbers are composed of mostly very long shots, with few, nearly invisible, cuts!
Debbie Reynolds was only 19 when she was cast as Kathy Selden.
And, Clockwork Orange's Alex DeLarge definitely altered forever any connotation to the beauty of 'just singing and dancing in the rain'...
10/10 - will watch again. ♻️
🍿
Once Within a Time is Godfrey Reggio's 8th experimental feature. Like his famous Koyaanisqatsi trilogy, it's an abstract non-linear montage, but this time with a different element of story-telling, that of children watching today's world disintegrate.
With a Philip Glass score (once again), exec-produced by Steven Soderbergh and with a cameo by Mike Tyson (?). It's a psychedelic, surreal trip, with animated dreamscapes, like La Planète sauvage on digital Psilocybin. 5/10.
🍿
"Today I learnt" about Stig Anderson, "The fifth ABBA". He was their promoter, manager, lyricist and manager. Stikkan is a new Swedish documentary about one of the most fascinating and influential people of Swedish music. (Even though the narrator has a very irritating intonation!).
🍿
"Obviously, Jesse is Tom and we're all Greg's"...
From Southbank Central, A fascinating panel discussion with Jesse Armstrong and four other brilliant writers of 'Succession' on September 15, 2023. 8/10.
And just to follow up, I revisited the masterful 'Pilot' episode, Celebration. Directed by Adam McKay, it introduced all the unpleasant main characters in such a way that one is being lured to obsessively follow them for 40 additional hours. It's also obvious from the very first viewing of Kendall Roy, with his sloped shoulders and forlorn sad-dog looks, that he is a 'Loser' who'll never be able to fill his father's big shoes. 10/10. ♻️
🍿
"I like your hairstyle... I like your polyester look"...
When Saturday night fever first opened in the 70's, I was a film snob and refused to see it. After stumbling upon the iconic opening scene today, I though I'll give it a shot. But Tony Manero still was a strutting, empty-headed, raping asshole, and the rest was not for me either. "Rocky but for Disco"? I saw Rocky recently and it was a great story. This was a ridiculous, sexist, stereotypical chauvinist, and pathetic ride. And was there a Ron Jeremy cameo? 1/10.
🍿
“I’ll be watching you, al-jazeera..”
Where do I even start? Poultrygeist, Night of the Chicken Dead is a piece of low-budget Troma schlock full of absurd, tongue-in-cheek body-fluid gore, the kind of shitshow I usually avoid. I thought I'll be able to see how bad can it really be, but after another explosive diarrhea gross-out scene that lasted for 2 or 3 minutes, I had to give it a permanent pass. 'Bye, Lloyd Kaufman. 1/10 - didn't finish.

Pierre: … the chief point is that to Nicholas ideas and discussions are an amusement—almost a pastime,” said Pierre. “For instance, he is collecting a library and has made it a rule not to buy a new book till he has read what he had already bought—Sismondi and Rousseau and Montesquieu.”
Natasha: So you say ideas are an amusement to him....
Pierre: Yes, and for me nothing else is serious. All the time in Petersburg I saw everyone as in a dream. When I am taken up by a thought, all else is mere amusement.
I know people like that.

« L’un des effets secondaires inattendus de l’effondrement des empires coloniaux européens fut de faire à peu près partout de la notion de souveraineté le principe des systèmes constitutionnels. D’où il suit qu’une théorie politique, si elle ne prend pas cela en considération, ou si elle traite de la royauté comme un phénomène marginal, exceptionnel ou secondaire, n’est pas une très bonne théorie. » David Graeber & Marshall Sahlins, Sur les rois, La Tempête.

{anya chalotra, 30, ciswoman, she/her} we are so glad to see you safe, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER MAYA ROUSSEAU of FRANCE! it’s dangerous out in the world these days, but i hear that you are PERSUASIVE and PRINCIPLED enough to handle it. just don’t let your UNCOMPROMISING bring you down! stay on your guard, because with your secret being at risk for exposure, you wouldn’t want everyone to find out about your SON’S TRUE LINEAGE AND THE CLAIM THEY HAVE ON THE ENGLISH CROWN. {mara, 26, est, she/her}
Background:
Maya Indira Rousseau was born into the prestigious Rousseau family, a once-prominent noble lineage in France. Her family's status, however, was diminished when the Orleans, the ruling dynasty, deemed them unworthy and exiled them from the court. This exile was a result of political machinations and rivalries within the French nobility, compounded by the Rousseau family's outspoken support for reformist ideas that threatened the traditional power structures.
Sent away from the intrigues of the French court, Maya found herself in England at a young age. Her family arranged for her to stay with distant relatives in London, hoping that the distance would protect her from the political fallout in France and provide her with new opportunities.
In England, Maya was introduced to high society and quickly became known for her intelligence, beauty, and charm. It was during this time that she met a gentleman, a charismatic and dashing prince who captured her heart. Unbeknownst to her initially, was the man was the Crown Prince of England, living incognito to experience life outside the constraints of royalty.
Maya and the Crown Prince of England romance blossomed quickly, but their time together was short-lived. He was called back to his royal duties and never returned for Maya as he had promised. Heartbroken and disillusioned, Maya discovered she was pregnant. Facing a future of uncertainty, she turned to her best friend, Henri Duval, for support.
Henri Duval was a nobleman of modest means but immense character. Deeply in love with Maya and determined to protect her, he offered her marriage and his name. Grateful and seeking stability for her unborn child, Maya accepted. Henri and Maya were married, and she gave birth to a son, whom they named Nicholas. Despite the unconventional start, their marriage was filled with mutual respect and affection.
For a time, Maya believed she had found happiness and security. Henri was a loving husband and father, and Nicholas grew up in a nurturing environment. However, the political landscape in France was changing. The Reckoning—a period of intense civil unrest and political upheaval—swept through the country, leading to the establishment of a constitutional monarchy.
Tragically, Henri was killed during the upheaval, leaving Maya a widow. Recognizing her intelligence, leadership abilities, and unwavering principles, the new government granted her the title of Deputy Prime Minister, acknowledging her equal status to her late husband. Maya’s persuasive abilities and principled nature made her a respected and influential figure in the newly formed government.
Personality:
Maya is persuasive, possessing a natural talent for rhetoric and negotiation. Her principled stance on issues makes her a beacon of integrity and trustworthiness, qualities that have earned her the respect of both her peers and the public. Her unwavering commitment to her beliefs sometimes makes her appear uncompromising, which can be both a strength and a challenge in the delicate world of politics.
Her experiences have shaped her into a resilient and determined individual. The pain of her past, particularly the abandonment by her first love and the subsequent struggles, have imbued her with a deep sense of empathy and a drive to create a better future for her son and her country.
Secret and Motivations:
Maya harbors a significant secret: her son Nicholas’s true lineage and his legitimate claim to the English crown. This knowledge is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it represents a potential power that could change the political landscape of Europe; on the other, it poses a grave risk to her son’s safety and her political career if it were ever exposed.
Her primary motivation is to protect her son and ensure his future. She is also driven by a desire to see France thrive under the new constitutional monarchy. Maya is dedicated to balancing the power between the reigning monarch and the elected government, striving to create a stable and prosperous nation.
Current Situation:
As Deputy Prime Minister, Maya finds herself at the center of a politically charged France. The country is ruled by both the reigning Monarch and the government-elected Prime Minister, a delicate balance of power that is constantly under threat. Civil unrest and the remnants of revolutionary fervor still linger, and the question of who holds the true power in France is ever-present.
Maya’s persuasive skills and principled nature make her a formidable player in this arena. She navigates the complex political landscape with care, leveraging her intelligence and charisma to advocate for policies that reflect her vision of justice and equality. However, her uncompromising stance on key issues sometimes puts her at odds with other influential figures, including those within her own government.
The secret of her son Nicholas’s lineage is a constant source of anxiety. She must protect this secret at all costs, knowing that its revelation could destabilize not only her family but also the fragile political equilibrium in France and England. Maya carefully manages her public and private lives, ensuring that her son remains unaware of his true heritage while preparing him for a future where he might need to understand and possibly confront his lineage. He is 8 years old.
Maya’s journey is one of balancing her public responsibilities with her private fears. She works tirelessly to secure her family's legacy and the future of France, all while guarding a secret that could change the course of history.

“It was a maddening image —
Little by little, the rooftop space filled up with guests. It’s impossible for a rum-sponsored party not to turn lively; and certainly, it has. While some are happy with their drinks and stay in the venue, drinking and dancing their spirits away — others choose to venture out, either returning to their rooms or getting lost in the maze that are the corridors of The Mark hotel.
In either case, the night is light and young, and there’s not a worry in their minds.
Little do they know however, that in the shadows, the Syndicate awaits.
— and the only way to whip it was to hang on until dusk —
Although the night had been planned to exhaustion, it’d been all but a coincidence that the operation had fallen on the same date as the party launch. It’s a blessing, at the same time that it’s a curse; more people circulating the area isn’t ideal — but a sea of potential issues isn’t so much so, if they’re impaired to begin with.
130 million dollars, gone up in flames. But they ought to make their money back, somehow.
So here the Syndicate hides, and at around 10:30, they strike. Swift and professional as ever, they go completely unnoticed — and they will take all that they can.
A highly effective heist, right under their noses. Those 130 million earned back in just a night.
No wild cards, no action that isn’t necessary, were the instructions given. Money, jewelry, art, anything of true value — that’s what they’re after. Designed as a victimless crime as far as bloodshed goes, the Syndicate still accounts for all. No issue, lest you get in their way.
— and banish the ghosts with rum.”
Unfortunately however, some unlucky few have. As instructed, should anyone be a concern, be it that they’re found in their rooms or other areas in the midst of the operation — they should be neutralized, by whatever means necessary. All with still keeping their anonymity, and succeeding at their tasks.
The pairs that have crossed paths are:
Ludovica Malatesta and Rus Ralston
Nora Vidal and Lee Malkovich
Zafar and Mathias Cain
Vir Zafar and Ibrahim Ziani
Abel Rousseau and Nik Erykssen
Oliver Wright and Jin Yoo
Tima El-Masri and Audra Smythe-Priestley
Avi Grover and Samar Burman
Max Szczesny and Enzo Principe
Karolina Erykssen and Samar Burman
OOC Info:
Part Two out of Three.
Part two will run for a few days, to allow for everyone to comfortably write their interactions in time; an update will be made both on the blog and discord for subsequent parts.
There is no requirement that people drop previous event threads set during Part 1 — but we encourage everyone to prioritize Part 2. This can be either through new fresh threads, or shifting your Part 1 thread into Part 2.
For characters not involved in the conflict, there are no restrictions to replying to starters (or continuing things) from Part 1, unless they were posted by someone, or are written with someone involved in the conflict. In that case, those starters may no longer be replied to. You’re also free to start any new things with other non-conflict characters as you wish.
If you wish to have any injuries (be them major or minor) or heavy impacting plots happen involving your character, please contact the admins so we can include it into the narrative.
Those in the conflict are encouraged to come up with scenarios where, mid-robbery, one would have the other held hostage. Be it at a hotel room, in some hidden office, or anywhere that is far from view and where there would be plenty to steal. They’re on a mission, after all. As always, if you have trouble coming up with ideas, the admins are always willing to help.
At the end of this post, we offer challenges to the guests. However, those are simply suggested interactions — and even if you choose to write it, your character is not limited to just writing those.
SYNDICATE CHARACTERS:
[ ALL SYNDICATE MEMBERS ARE WEARING NEUTRAL BLACK CLOTHING AND MASKS. IF THEIR CLOTHES WEREN’T NEUTRAL AT THE PARTY, THEN AT THIS POINT THEY WOULD HAVE CHANGED. NOTHING ABOUT THEIR APPEARANCE (THAT THEY CAN CONTROL) SHOULD BE RECOGNIZABLE. EVEN IF ENCOUNTERING SOMEONE THEY HAVE MET BEFORE, THEY ARE TOLD TO KEEP THEIR IDENTITIES SECRET TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITIES. ]
For Syndicate members especially, Part 2 should be prioritized so that plots can flow easily.
If you have Part 1 threads, we won’t ask that you drop them, but that you work your way into finishing them — with your characters, above all, keeping in mind that they have a job to do. It might be a night of fun for everyone else, but not them.
From now on, you can only interact with other Syndicate members, or the character you were paired with.
You can write as many mid-robbery threads with your fellow Syndicate members as your heart desires. Interactions amongst them are allowed, and absolutely encouraged!
As far as the rest of the party goes, you may only interact with the character yours was paired with, as one is the other’s hostage.
Your character should be focused in the robbery itself and collecting valuable goods. Anyone they’ve encountered is damage control.
Important: this is meant to be an incredibly secretive and smooth operation. Get in, get out, without causing disturbance. The main party should not have any inkling or knowledge that this is happening.
POINTS AND CHALLENGES:
Syndicate members and conflict volunteers will each earn 20 points for writing their paired threads. (It doesn’t matter if one character ‘wrote’ the starter; both members will be awarded points.)
All remaining characters will earn 20 points for completing the challenges prompted below. They are not mandatory, but we will reward you if you choose to go forth with them.
The points above will be awarded at the end of the event, to account for any starters going unanswered or quickly dropped, as we wish to be as fair as possible.
Surprise! We’re also rewarding conflict volunteers with 30 points for being wonderful team players and allowing us to use their characters for this plot. We adore you and appreciate you, so here’s a small gesture to reflect that!
CHALLENGES:
Jennifer Callaghan recognizes Izaak Walker from his internet presence, and attempts to strike an interview, or even a comment. Izaak knows it’s unadvisable to go forth with it, given all the rum ingested tonight.
Andrea Galán has been avoiding Aaron Keaton, until they cross paths. There’s an inkling or knowledge of her involvement with crime, and tensions rise.
Gideon Hayes is spotted by an off duty Joaquim Borges whilst trying to deal — be it to a random guest, or worst yet, the very detective himself.
Danvir Persaud thinks he recognizes Laith Hassan, from briefly crossing paths in the law-and-lawful world. There’s no reason for a sketch artist and a lawyer to engage however, until now — that they’re both trying to get a vending machine to work.
Renata Cervantes-Müller and Úrsula Villa are both powerful women in their own right — except that they share far different ideals, and defend different people. It’s been easy to avoid one another thus far, until the elevator doors fail, locking them in.
A dentist and the state’s most prominent politician walk into a... bathroom. It’s a classic, slightly awkward, run-in. Except this time, it involves Nicholas Bergeron — and Julian Berkeley.
Jakob Cervantes-Müller is a busy man, and the things keeping him busy aren’t the kindest. For prevention (and future endeavors), he needs a lawyer — and he’s heard Adam Starke is one of the best. What a coincidence, that their drinks just got mixed up at the bar.
Constance Romero, the Cartel’s informant manager, is always on the lookout for future contacts. Like some other select people, she’d heard of Lev Movska’s defection from The Brotherhood — and hell if she isn’t going to try and get all of that knowledge into archive for them. The enemy of my enemy, as they say.
With too much rum in their system, Lola Villarin and Diego Romero end up wandering — testing every other room for unlocked doors. Eventually, they make it into a suite; it’s all fun and games, until the lock won’t allow them back out.
Hazel Arthur and Ryan Fitzgerald barely look at each other, when touching up their make-up in the lobby’s bathroom. But they have to acknowledge each other’s presence when they realize they’re locked in — and Hazel hasn’t heard back from her partner in far too long.
They’d both had the same idea — the hotel’s fire escape as the perfect spot for a smoke break. Hans Starke and Zuleika Sandoval are now forced to share the space (that both claim to have found first).
Bob Bekker and Aera Paek, different positions at different publications. One man with success in his horizon, and a woman who can grant anyone it. It’s a throw-away conversation until the words fact checker come to rise. The best paper, after all, is the most accurate one — would this man do her the favor of failing, in exchange for a brighter future?
Araceli Aguilar suddenly stops Heather Hyeon Seo in the middle of the lobby, with an unwarranted prediction of her future. Even if Heather doesn’t believe in it, it’s intriguing enough that she must hear more.
Rahi Kumar is well known for his love of the sky, preferring to gaze upwards towards the heavens; it is this exact preference, that sends him careening into Andel Kenza, who scurries away from a main party room, clutching what appears to be an empty bottle of rum, a strange substance congealed on its base. The pair stare at another another - a stalemate.
Erin Katz was never a woman to wait for opportunity to simply knock on her door - she prefers to kick it in herself, a stiletto crashing through wooden panels. JJ Baptiste is a man who can make or break you in this city, and with the intriguing wallet she’s just found on the floor, she thinks she’s got enough leverage to earn his ear as he lords over a table in the back of the bar.
Moon Subin is currently scouting the media world, looking for new voices to either support his agenda in the press — or to simply gain insight. It’s unclear which Maureen Keaton could be, yet... but it’s worth a try.
FINAL NOTES
1 — If by any chance your pairing partner, or your challenge partner doesn’t get back to you — please contact the main page and we will rearrange things so that you may still write it! No one will be left without some event fun, we promise.
2 — If you’ve missed the window to volunteer your character for conflict, or you have joined recently and didn’t know about it, you can shoot the main page a message and we will do our very best to include you into the action. Only main page messages, please — as Discord will be hard to keep track of.
3 — As always, the admins are only a message away should you have any questions.
Part 2 interactions are now open. Have fun!

PART I
One thing rang true and that was the prediction of the brutal blizzard of November 28th. Everyone prepped the best they could with the remembrance of how last Winter had ruthlessly blanketed their homes. There’s a frenzy for backup generators that get bought up in the Chicago stores for the anticipation. The first ominous whistle of the wind, and the pebbles of ice fall on the eve of Thanksgiving. Power flickers in each home giving them a moment of awkward darkness, before the backup generators kick in. The power companies in the city promise to have everyone serviced, but they start to service the scattered patches on the outskirts of the city first .
Most joked that was the brutal blizzard they had prepared for, until Mother Nature dropped her poker face. The ships with cargo became stuck in the harbor due to the icy fortress that froze over the gigantic lake. No lights of passing planes in the sky, as the wind turned into a sinister howl. Darkness engulfed the entirety of the city, except for a strip of hotels in neutral territory. The footmen of the families alert them that there seem to be only a handful of hotels that seem to be around. Meanwhile the temperature dips in the homes of those unlucky, and they must face a brash decision to not become the ice sculptures akin to the people of Pompeii.
Multiple phone calls are done, and just as their phones are about to die they get a booking. A hotel that mentions that the accommodations might be crowded -- However, they can host your groups and promise warmth as long as the storm doesn’t shut them down. Everyone packs up their children, pets, and housemates to journey to the only solace that isn’t sold out in all Chicago.
After a restless eternity everyone was given a room number with their baggage ( human and otherwise ). The group of people that checked guests in alert them that there is a room for the animals to stay in kennels or they may accompany the others up to the room. Just when everyone was annoyed after being crowded in the lobby, and having to wait decades to get from one floor to another in the elevator.  It doesn’t help there’s always that one asshole that tries to asphyxiate everyone with their heinous flatulence.
They FINALLY make it into their hotel room. Massive enough and customized with multiple full sized beds. No television, the heat blares up, it’s the poster child of the most bare necessities room. While everyone claimed a bed and stared haughty towards the guests that had ended up in the same room with them. A loud crackle followed by a slight rumble of their feet had the lights in the hotel rooms go off. The hotel doors seemed to have powered down, and anyone that tried to leave them --found they wouldn’t budge. A soft wheeze emitted from the heater in the room, and for a moment that’s the only noise in the room with you until the profanities start to flood. Winter wasn’t the only one that had prepped for the evening. The Walshes and their affiliates watch on with hidden elation as their plan goes into motion.
Part I will run from November 28th until December 3rd. Under the cut will be the groupings as well as some additional notes for this event.
Please don’t make any new starters open or closed that don’t pertain to this event while it’s happening. Normal replies can be done while the event is running, but it gets confusing timeline wise if people have additional threads that they start that would belong after the event timeline.
For this event specifically, the weather in Chicago is fictional. After the event you can feel free to glance at the Weather app and RP it out that way!
Animals will also be boarded at this neutral hotel. Keep in mind if the animals are left at your residence with the current temperature and no heat they will likely pass away.
Keep in mind that if your character has children (unless they are Walsh affiliates) they  likely have their kids in the room with them or any other NPC’s. If the character is a Walsh it was their choice to have them be ‘stuck’ in the room with them or left with a babysitter provided by the council.
For information on the bold names check the Walsh Discord channel.
PREP PLOT SLOTS CHOSEN
LIAM WALSH & IVY IVASHKOV volunteered to carpool with a hotel van to the hospital for sedatives and other harvesting supplies. AUDREY ROUSSEAU is already at the hospital and helps them fill the van before they all ride back to the hotel together. DAVUT DEMIR & KILLIAN WALSH are tasked with going to The Westin and sabotaging the hotel in time for the storm. They are told to do whatever necessary to make sure the hotel can’t accept any more guests before they return for the night. DARREN MURPHY took a smoke break after unloading only one of the supply vans at the hotel. LINCOLN DAWSON caught them smoking—as opposed to working—and made DARREN MURPHY finish unloading two other vans while they watched.
ASLYN WALSH collected the weekly stash owed from the business owners at Magnificent Mile. She delivered the money to the council without prying eyes of local law enforcement or rival gangs catching on. ARMANDE IVASHKOV & another associate, had the dirty work of cleaning up the old blood stained hotel rooms used for organ harvesting the night before. They made it presentable before opening night. Their efforts were doubled when other affiliates weren’t aware of the chore, and had set off to bloody the room with a fresh harvest session.TARON LYNCH & JOANNA "JOEY" O'SHEA are instructed to sabotage the backup power generators on the north side. Surprisingly, they didn’t get caught. CAOILAINN WALSH had to “check” everyone into the hotel—AKA, assign each guest to a room. Everyone converges in the lobby and watches them impatiently, and the later it gets, the more aggressive the crowd becomes. ASLI DEMIR & FLETCHER HARGRAVE met with Jean Jaques “JJ” Baptiste and persuaded him by discussing terms of agreement for him to temporarily close Romanet Hotel the night of the massive storm.

“How can a novel produce an emotional effect that is qualitatively different from the characters’ own amorous passion? What does it mean to identify with a character? How can we use  fictional characters to understand our own lives and the world in which we live?”
