On December 5th the Scottish author,  journalist and broadcaster,  William McIlvanney died in Glasgow.
Everyone should have a favourite Mcilvanney book, mines is The Papers of Tony Veitch, the second in his Laidlaw trilogy. The son of a miner, MciLvanney graduated from Glasgow University and worked as an English teacher between 1960 and 1975.
William was known as Gus by his friends and has been tagged as “the father of ‘Tartan Noir’ ” His first book, Remedy is None, was published in 1966 and won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. Docherty, a moving portrait of a miner whose courage and endurance is tested during the depression, won the Whitbread Novel Award.
Another great read is the Big Man , it is the story of Dan Scoular, an unemployed man who turns to bare-knuckle fights to make a living.  Both novels feature typical McIlvanney characters - tough, often violent, men locked in a struggle with their own nature and background.
The Kiln, is the story of Tam Docherty, the grandson of the hero of Docherty. It won the Saltire Society Scottish Book of the Year Award. He also won Glasgow Herald People’s Prize twice in the 90’s for the books Walking Wounded and Strange Loyalties.
The Big Man was made into a film starring Liam Neeson and Billy Connolly.
William McIlvanney died on  this day 2015 at the age of 79, after a short illness. On hearing of his death, a number of public figures, including Nicola Sturgeon, Ian Rankin and Irvine Welsh, paid tribute noting both his inspirational writing and his likeable and gentlemanly personality.
One obituary noted:
“Many authors are admired. Many are respected. Few are loved as he was, for what they are as well as for what they have written."
William’s son Liam has successfully followed in his father’s footsteps into literature and won a prize named in his dads honour, the 2018 McIlvanney Prize for Scottish Crime Book of the Year for his book The Quaker.
William McIlvanney was working on a manuscript when he passed away and the book was released this year after Ian Rankin was asked to finish the book,  Rankin has said it was an “incredible honour” to be asked to finish, he commented  “There were two or three books in there which he was contemplating but one of them he had actually made a good start on, which was The Dark Remains.”

Well it was "third" wheeling for a while until Mariona Caldentey, whom she was dating and lives in Mallorca, joined them. It's the reason why Lisa Evans wore a Mariona shirt in the euros, Sam Kerr (SCO) follows her and so does Nicola Docherty...
Feel like the jill and ingrid situation was really hot for a minute and then it was over
