It was only yesterday that I landed up at my dear friend Abhishek Gupta’s Designer Showroom in Defence Colony. Yes, he had agreed to be by Survival Book retailer and Book councillor and I wanted to write about him and his work. Abhishek’s showroom is on the ground floor and is exquisite in its layout and texture. It was a play with a lot of wood, mirrors and lighting. Near the wall are placed all his collections in full glory: The Shalwar, The Achkan, The Kurta and an army of Dupattas and Lehengas. Our man caters to both men and women. The showroom is well-lit so that one can observe the carefully done embroideries on the various garments.

Abhishek, as far as I can remember, was a great artist even at school when we were together studying at Welham Boys’. His skills at drawing, stitching, painting and even at bardic art were of the highest quality. He almost scored 100% in Arts at the board examination. Gupta is one of the fortunate ones who found their passion so early in life and persevered with it. He studied at the famous NIFT School of Fashion and soon became an apprentice and a golden boy of Rohit Bal, the baap (father) of Indian fashion, the man who defined fashion in India. I guess after that, it was plain sailing as Abhishek opened his own showroom and now boasts an array of clients, the who’s who of Delhi. I believe that Delhi is the capital of fashion, not Mumbai. Mumbai is all Bollywood, that’s not Fashion. He explained all these as we got talking over a brief interview that I took in his showroom when he was in a more relaxed mood.

I enjoyed taking pics of his designer clothes with my zoom lens and had a ball shooting one of his lamps and many of his other Mannequins. The showroom has a very helpful and pleasant staff all very eager to serve and take the customers around. On the other wall, I saw his collection of drawing room items which could be used to decorate a tastefully done house. But it was his passion for music systems and sound that was keeping him busy these days. Abhishek is into selling ultra-high-end sound systems with room acoustics and design. Yes, he claims he can do the entire thing assembling a world-class sound and audio systems and even make your entire music room to give you ultimate and optimum sound quality. “I am designing one for actor Chiranjeevi in the south. He is a very old client of mine.” Gupta beams from ear to ear as he explained his love for music and sound system. He walked me through his music room and explained the nuances of music and sound to me.

The Central Of The Chennaites

We were invited for a wedding out there in my native & dad was trapped without excuse to the sugar coats which my relatives gave to their words of invitation.. Getting tickets were nearly a Mission Impossible & I saw Tom Cruise in my dad getting us the Thatkal Tickets (they were called) & its afteral a race where you win getting them.. And finally the tickets are into your hands and now my Mom is injected with these superhuman powers as that of Flash where I find her flashing inside my home & appears occasionally to scold me for no reason.. She was a lady to be complemented.. As that of every middle-class Indian mothers. Time runs out so fast and we've to catch up a local train to reach the Chennai Central Station where our trains arrive. Train Travels are always nostalgic as every time you get into the crowded evening train where you nearly die due to the suffocation of the sticky-stinky-sweaty smell which hits into my nostrils.. The sweats of the whole day hard works in workplace & whole day bunking of college teens. With the sounds and whistles of the train which brought a small twist in my lips which I called smile, my Mom gave me that strange look which meant "stop doing what I was doing" as for her "what others will think" was all that mattered. I was a rebel anyway & I had a book with me every time I went a distant travel which again she hated. I could see the sun falling with the darkness coming out of nowhere but everywhere. With the streetlights lit and the traffic trains formed on the highways which I could see through the open windows of my train where the whirling wind tried her best to mess up my neatly combed oily hair tied up into a high pony, I tried my best to fathom the thoughts of atleast a passenger. The way they moved to&fro with a lot more unity which contrasted their thoughts, their class, their age, their interests, their tone & what not, their stares. The strong stink of urine will make sure that you're near to the final stop. And finally there I am, the favorite place of mine in this city inspite of me hating the strong stinks of urine and sweat smelled crowds.. Reaching the station at 7 in the evening, I found it to be a lot more crowded than usual. I loved the scene of the huge colonial building with red bricked walls, white borders and in the centre the huge Roman Clock which gave it the Chennai Feel(though I never minded if they're working or not). I've never found the people out there without a hurry. They were always restless & found that little happiness in pushing the ones going in front. Crossing the beeping doorways have always been the proud thing for me to do(don't ask me, "why so?"). The beautiful wall paintings which were done with passion & love by the NIFT students always caught my attention. They were now used as a source of entertainment for people while pissing onto them which quoted, "Proud-Madrasi" & similar stuffs. I saw ironies everywhere starting from the staircases filled with "swacch bharat" ads to pigeons which wandered everywhere inside the station as if there was "peace" in there. The train was two&a half hours late & thus I was destined to write this stuff. I always found these welcoming bookstalls & foodstalls to which I was unlucky to visit. You'll find three types of restroom here. One-where you pay & go,two- where you just go(extremely stinky) and three-where you'll have to wait for the "aaya" to send you in. The only stares I love here are those innocent glares of kids,their kind smiles sometimes filled with naughtiness. And yes.. I love looking up for some good looking boys(though I lacked the guts to look at them).

There is a lot more which my small brain fails to explain you about what I see in here sitting on my waiting chair.. A lot more about the lives living here from rats,to humans, to dogs. It's more than an hour that I'm typing this without switching on the free WiFi I get in here. These memories are priceless and will always remain in my head as the sand remaining still on the Beach of Marina and the ever diverse filled crowds of The Chennai Central Station❤.
