your stories reduce my anxiety, so maybe storytime??
OK OK so i realise this and like 5 other asks have been rotting in my askbox for months now and i finally remembered a good enough, crazy ass story to tell
so it was the first day of ninth grade and we had a new physics teacher, who was also our class teacher and he was so. fucking. cool. like. dude literally strutted into our class, introduced himself, and asked us for our names.
and then at the end he's like pointing ppl out like 'you're gonna do JEE' 'you're gonna do NEET' 'you're gonna do NIFT' AND HE WAS FUCKING RIGHT
and he'd be like okay so when i ask a question i need everyone to raise their hands regardless of whether you know the answer or not. answer pata hai toh raise your right hand, if you think you know what the answer is but not sure, dont raise your right hand fully. agar bilkul pata hi nahi hai ki kya pooch rha hu toh raise your left hand
so he quickly became our favourite teacher because he was so fun and cool and made classes interesting, you could hate physics but you couldnt hate him.
so one day nitya and i missed two of his classes (reason why will be told in a another story- after this one- i promise) and we went to cover it up during our double PT period. since we're smart students *hair flip* we got it done in about 20 mins and then started timepassing with sir, when the topic came to our names
so i just said i was named after my grandmother, nothing too special, and nitya said his dad suggested nitya but his mom changed it to nityaprakash because of her older brother who ran away from home after 12th (their dad wanted him to be a doctor but he wanted to be a teacher or sumn) and his uncle's name was prakash
AND OUR SIR FUCKING PULLS AND OLD PHOTOGRAPH FROM HIS WALLET LIKE 'IS THIS YOUR MOTHER' AND NITYA WAS LIKE 'YEAH THATS MY MOTHER... WAIT ARE YOU MY UNCLE' AND OUR SIR WAS LIKE YEAH MY NAMES PRAKASH AND WELL HERE I AM
I WAS LIKE WHAT IN THE INDIAN DAILY SOAP DRAMA IS THIS HWAT TEH FUKC
TL;DR our new physics teacher turned out to be my bf's long lost uncle, i cant even-

“FASHION”- INDEFINABLE
I’m Aashi Nahar a student at NIFT, Gandhinagar. Before that, I was just a kid trying to find ambition in life. When the design field caught my interest after high school, I gave my entrance exam but couldn't make it on the first attempt, then I took a drop after 12th to give a another shot, and look I hit the bull's eye.
Tumblr media
I was very excited to join college and for that same, I went for shopping. I wanted all the trendy clothes so that I could camouflage with the crowd but later I realized why should I be like the crowd if I could BE ME here.
Talking about my journey at NIFT, I have somehow within these couple of months, started seeing fashion as an essential component of my everyday life. Fashion is something that has always fascinated me. At the very beginning, I felt now I am in Fashion College, and I need to dress up very well to showcase my standards. Which is in general important but fashion is not only about dressing in trendy clothes and having highlights in your hair but way beyond that. It's what I learned from my fashion basics lectures. Whenever I thought about fashion before coming to a fashion college, I had a common thinking toward it i.e. clothing, modeling, grooming, etc. Shallow, unconventional, and materialistic- These are three of many words that can be associated with fashion. Fashion is so much more than the millionaires that are seen in ads and campaigns. When I discovered fashion after coming to NIFT, my perspective towards fashion changed. Beauty, self-expression, self-confidence- These are three more words that can also be used to describe fashion, and these three words, among many more, are the main purpose why fashion has such a huge impact on many lives, including my own. Fashion means to me so much more than making money off a collection, or being on the cover of Vogue, it means the experimentation to find how you truly want to express yourself and how confident you feel once you find the perfect combination of clothing. It's forever changing and keeping the world on its toes and how can anyone deny the excitement that comes along with that?
Tumblr media
When people ask what fashion to you is? What is your reply?... The answer to it always varies from person to person as each and everyone has a different perspective.
Fashion is ART
Fashion is everything, everywhere, a necessity for people
Fashion is the sky, nature, clothes we wear, our personalities…
Fashion is you, yourself
Fashion is economy, blogging, getting dressed, getting makeup, and being able to explore yourself- individually
Fashion is lifestyle
Fashion is creativity, freedom, and craziness.
Whenever I dress myself up in the clothes I love I feel very confident and strong, the energy comes from within.
Fashion has become a part of human life. People began to choose clothes based on their style preferences. Fashion appears in clothing, accessories, make-up, hairstyle, lifestyle, and body proportions. Fashion is very important because it reflects you. It promotes creativity. The positive side of fashion is, it enhances your life and allows independent thinking. There should be a balance between being fashionable and wearing what suits us. Hence we should understand that fashion is the attitude we carry and not fashionable clothes and accessories.
In our first class, we were asked- ' What is fashion to you'. I was not answerable, later when ma'am told about her definition of fashion, to got to know what fashion really is and its not same for everyone.
This is the mood board depicting my definition to fashion.
Tumblr media
CULTURE AND TRADITION help us to connect ourselves to society. I believe fashion is not only about how someone is dressed up. But it's more than that, it is about following your passion and your dreams. All this can also be described as fashion. I learned about this through our activity where we all wore our traditional and cultural clothing. From Jharkhand’s feathers bands as hair accessories to Rajasthani Poshaks, the presentation day was a statement day to depict what strength Indian culture holds for all my batchmates and it was also an enlightening & emotional experience for all to adorn the clothes that have been part of our family heirloom. We were supposed to research our places, understand the society we live in, etc. I am from RATLAM, Madhya Pradesh, I am well aware of what Ratlam is renowned for-Sev, Sona, Saree. I got to know about the well-known sarees in the Malva region-"Maheshwari" and "Chanderi", and their history, wearing the Maheshwari saree. The origin of the Maheshwari sarees dates back to the 18th century when the state of Indore in Madhya Pradesh was ruled by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar. According to legends, Queen Ahilyabai ordered craftsmen from Surat and Malwa to design special 9-yard sarees to be gifted to royal guests and relatives.

WHERE DOES SUSTAINABILITY START
When Gabriella Smith said-“I had 116 t-shirts and 52 pairs of jeans, yes they were all of the different colors and different shapes, but still I had a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear”. I agreed to it undoubtedly. Then I questioned myself, “Are you okay with having so many clothes yet nothing to wear?” How many of us have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear? Many of us buy fast fashion as a way to keep up with trends, without thinking about the impact we are having on the planet or the people.
youtube
Sustainable fashion includes products, production processes, or design concepts that aim to offer a timeless appearance and durable materials. This is quite popular. Sustainable fashion is good for the ecosystem and environment.
FAST FASHION impacts the Environment vigorously also these fast fashion companies give unfair treatment to Migrant workers and many more. Hence, we must prick a choice of SUSTAINABLE FASHION over FAST FASHION and help our only Earth stay healthy and wealthy. Nurturing the other generations.
TALKING ABOUT FASHION IN GENERAL TERMS
Fashion is a form of self-expression and autonomy at a particular period and place and in a specific context, of clothing, footwear, lifestyle, accessories, makeup, hairstyle, and body posture
Fashion follows a graph, it slowly rises, reaches its peak, and then falls. This period or life span during which fashion exists, moving through the five stages from introduction through obsolescence is called the Fashion cycle.
Tumblr media
img from google
The fashion cycle is a period of time or lifespan during which fashion exists. There are in total six stages of the fashion Cycle.
Introduction Stage, Growth Stage, Peak Stage, Decline Stage, and Obsolescence stage.
In the Introduction Stage designs are first previewed during fashion weeks at the major design centers and new styles, colors, or textures are introduced – beginning an upward slope.
In the Growth Stage manufacturers who copy designer clothes will reproduce the styles as apparel that costs less by using less expensive fabrics or minimal detail.
Peak Stage is the top of the hill where Fashion is at its most popular and accepted stage. Also, Mass production but prices are not necessarily low, prices vary at this stage.
In the Decline Stage, the Consumer demand is decreasing, going down the slope.
In Obsolescence, stage is the end of the fashion cycle and the bottom of the hill. Now, Consumers are no longer interested in fashion and find new looks. Also, the Price of the fashion product may be low at this point, but consumers may not buy the product.

Know what would trend in future
As a beginner in the design industry the fact that we can predict what will trend in future surprised me. I didn’t know something like this existed until I learnt about fashion forecasting.
Fashion forecasting is something that focuses on upcoming trends. Prediction of the colors, textures, fabrics, style, beauty, etc that will be presented on the runways and in upcoming seasons.
FASHION FORECASTING
Fashion Forecasting is an international career that strains on the upcoming trends of the market. The Fashion forecaster predicts the colors, fabrics, textures, materials, graphics, accessories, and footwear that will be presented on the runway and in stores in the upcoming season.

THING THAT CHANGED FASHION
We were given this very interesting assignment about the item that changed fashion. When I researched about the same the story and the object "Safety Pin" caught my attention.
Hunt made the invention in order to pay off a $15 debt to a friend. He used a piece of brass wire that was about 8 inches (200 mm) long and made a coil in the center of the wire so it would open up when released. The clasp at one end was devised in order to shield the sharp edge from the user.
This problem was solved by the American mechanic Walter Hunt, in 1849. Hunt patented the safety pin, which he called a dress pin. The design was ingenious because the pin was constructed from a single measure of wire. Hunt used brass, coiled it at the center and formed a clasp on one end, shielding the wearer.

EXHIBITION AND MUSEUM
A Precursor to The Arvind-Indigo Museum. Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum Lalbaug Shahibaug, near Shahibaug Underpass Ahmedabad
The exhibition was of Arvind Indigo museum where it has opened a world of possibilities for unexplored surfaces such as metal, stone, paper, leather, polyester fiber, glass, and wood, among others. Indigo takes center stage at the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum, in Ahmedabad, with artists responding to the pigment in myriad ways – whether it is through weaves and painting or furniture, sculpture, and installation. Some of these works stem from archival research, looking at the tumultuous history of indigo in the colonial era; others are more minimalist explorations of young artists, who work with paper. One can see stunning examples of craftsmanship on display as well, with fabrics created by skilled dyers being put up as part of the exhibition
We got an opportunity to visit Mr. Asif Sheikh’s WHITE ON WHITE EXHIBITION, where we got to learn about many artists' artworks. We were truly amazed at seeing all the intricate work in the artwork. There were various kinds of materials used with a base as white. I've got inspiration from many artworks. One of them belonged to the artist- ANGIRA SHAH and was a display of cotton hand-spun rope with Gold leafing on the rope which was named "ROPED." Also, he used the symbolism of spirituality in his other artwork. He had five textile wall art panels in many shades of white by ANGIRA SHAH. Each panel was a result of his personal meditation, the techniques that he had used to retain the honesty of different materials, were amazing. He combined them with evolving contemporary expressions, I think which exhibit a sense of Integrity and Aesthetics. The attempt has been to work a collection that exceeds a combined effervescence through stripes and swirls in different hues of white.
Many other artworks stole my eyes were Oil white Pashmina, MARODI EMBROIDERY; BROCADE BY Haseem Mohammad, Varanasi, TANGALIA EMBROIDERY by BABUBHAI RATHOD, and so on.

“EARTH PROVIDES ENOUGH TO SATISFY EVERY MAN'S NEED BUT NOT ANY MAN'S GREED.” – MAHATMA GANDHI
I’m Gargi Gosavi a student at NIFT, Gandhinagar. Fashion is something that has always fascinated me since I was a teenager. I made sure I had the trendiest outfits. Back then buying things from H&M, Zara and other fast fashion brands didn’t matter as much as it does now after knowing the back story of the fast fashion brands. Coming to NIFT was like a dream come true. While doing my research for the course I want to apply for textile design was something which caught my attention. After high school, I gave my entrance exam and here I'm today in Gandhinagar. Learning the subject of Fashion Basic has changed my perspective towards fashion.
Tumblr media
It was my first time when I was presenting. My anxiety had reached the peak. I was not very confident about myself that time. My first presentation was on “fashion according to you” my topic for this presentation was the Nike Air Jordans and Air Force which we all know are trendy. In my presentation I talked about their history, price, different types of Jordans, Air Force and how people take care of them like their own babies. On the very first day, we were told about our mid term assignment, which was to dress up reflecting our traditions and state we belong to. Coming from Maharashtra and being a Maharashtrian I was wearing a Nauvari saree(nine yard saree) which I sourced from my sister in law. I was wearing all the traditional Maharashtrian accessories from head to toe.In my presentation I spoke about the history of nauvari saree ,textiles, food, culture and festivals of Maharashtra. These presentations helped me become confident about myself.
Tumblr media
Fashion changed my perspective
It’s tempting to turn a blind eye in front of such flashy offers, but the planet can’t take it anymore!
If you’re used to buying clothes without questioning how they were made, acknowledging these fast fashion facts can be the first step towards making an actual change.
I now have realised that fashion is not only about clothes and looking fashionable. It may look very glamorous from the outside but it has a dark side that very few people are aware of. We had a debate in our class on slow fashion and fast fashion which changed my perspective. Buying clothes from fast fashion brands will make you look fashionable but how about the damage it’s creating to the environment? We don't even know that the people working for these brands are even safe. Are they paid well? We all are aware of the Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh where around 1136 people lost their lives and 3120 people were injured. The conditions where the people are working for these brands are unsafe and promote child labour. Millions of children are forced to work in terrible conditions for the clothing we wear. We don’t even know that the women working for the clothes are even safe. We all wear clothes even if we’re not necessarily lovers of fashion but we all are responsible for the transition to this flourishing fashion industry. The materials these brands use are harmful to the environment.Fast fashion is responsible for 20-35% of ocean microplastics Another problem with polyester and synthetic fabrics is that every time you wash them, they’ll release between 700 to 4000 plastic polyester per gram. These end up in the ocean, fish bellies, and… yep, yours too if you eat seafood. Polyester now has been found in breast milk as well. Can you imagine how much worse the situation is? Fast fashion clothing relies upon planned obsolescence unlike durable vintage or ethical clothes. These items are designed to fall so that the consumers like us will keep buying new items regularly.
Tumblr media
Can we bring change as Gandhiji did?
Let me take you back to the time when Gandhiji started a Swadeshi Movement a movement designed to boycott imported goods and production. The citizens of India burnt all the clothes which came from the UK and started to make their clothes using the charkha. Khadi cloth became the heart of this strategy when Gandhi asked every man and woman to plant and harvest their materials for the yarn needed to create Khadi fabric. He also asked everyone, whether rich or poor, to spend time each day spinning Khadi. People of all classes came together to do as Gandhi asked, and their efforts helped the country in its bid to become self-sufficient. Entire villages adopted the movement, weaving their way to economic freedom through fashion. Let’s support our artisans and our culture by following slow fashion.
Tumblr media
Do slow-fashion items last longer?
Items from my grandmother and even my mother when she was young are still in pristine shape. I can not say the same for the items I bought some years ago from fast fashion brands. Why? Have you ever heard of planned obsolescence? If the stitching is not good, if the materials are not great, the piece will not stand washing and wearing. And so, eventually will not be good to be worn. Now, you need to buy a new piece, and here we go again. This is easy math, high quality = longer-lasting item. Slow fashion items are long-lasting so you can wear them as long as your heart desires. In the end, it is cheaper to purchase a more expensive item. It is a win-win for you and the environment. After the debate, I was thrilled after knowing the damage fast fashion brands are creating in the environment and that the people working for these brands are miserable and unsafe.
How You Can Make Sustainability Stylish
One of the biggest drivers of fast fashion – and its associated waste – is the consumer. After all, no one wants to be stuck wearing outdated outfits. But if you extend the life of your clothes by just nine months, you can reduce the environmental impact by as much as 30 per cent. By getting creative with your closet, you can make a difference just like I did in lockdown I had nothing to do so I used to experiment with my brother's clothes. He had a black old t-shirt which he wasn’t using anymore so I decided to make a top for myself by cutting and splitting the tshirt into two halves, folding &twisting it around my neck and chest and creating a pattern in itself. The other top was a normal top where I stitched straps of the remaining fabric and made it a tie-around crop top.

Know what would trend in future
As a beginner in the design industry the fact that we can predict what will trend in future surprised me. I didn’t know something like this existed until I learnt about fashion forecasting.
Fashion forecasting is something that focuses on upcoming trends. Prediction of the colours, textures, fabrics, style, beauty, etc that will be presented on the runways and in upcoming seasons.
Is polyester the new Khadi?
During the pre-independence period people started to use the hand-spun cloth that remains warm in winters and cool in summers. We visited Reliance Trends to see their winter collection and overall clothes. One thing which we noticed was that none of the sweaters had wool as their material. 90-95 per cent polyester was used in sweater. Polyester is a performance textile, used in activewear, athleisure, etc. Polyester is used everywhere and is recyclable. We all know how harmful this fabric is and when I saw the amount of polyester each and every clothing item contained I was stunned! The traditional wear and the kids section clothing was mainly made using cotton. They also had the sustainable denim.
Tumblr media
Reviving our handloom heritage
An exhibition of the artist weaver Rajen Chaudhari was organised by CEPT University in Ahmedabad. He was a student at JJ School of Arts, Mumbai. Having interest in textiles, he went to different places in India where he could learn how to use a handloom weave. He practised hand spinning and hand weaving for a very long time. His work was stunning which had patterns using the weave, very intricate and each one of them was unique in its own way. He transformed his paintings and sketches into weaves. There was a handloom weave and a spinning wheel kept where a lady showed us how it is functioned. The process involves entwining a set of vertical threads, the wrap with a set of horizontal threads, the weft.
Tumblr media
The second visit was to Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum. Kasturbhai Lalbhai was one of the pioneering Industrialists of pre and post-independent sage of India. One can see the vast panorama of Indian art history ie. Mughal, Rajput, Pahari, Bengal school – early modern and contemporary art, all under one roof is unique. Inside the house, which is now the museum there was a beautiful collection of old paintings using natural paints, betels used for the emerald colour on the gold foil, watercolours, etc. The artist back then made every painting/artwork meticulously. I was speechless after seeing those paintings which were done so thoughtfully and with intricacy. The furniture on which the exhibition was displayed was designed by the students of NID.
The next place was the White on White exhibition of Mr Asif Shaikh who is one of India’s most accomplished and acclaimed embroidery and textile artist. He’s on a 5 yr project which he started back in 2020 in which he is making 100 textiles out of which 37 are done with the help of Indian artisans. These 37 textiles were an introduction to his new collection. We could see the efforts he had put into fabricating those textiles. All the designs were very unique and were from different regions of India. His work astonished and inspired me.
The next exhibition was of Arvind Indigo museum where it has opened a world of possibilities for unexplored surfaces such as metal, stone, paper, leather, polyester fibre, glass, and wood, among others.
Tumblr media
Knowing the bitter reality of the fast fashion industry I’ll make sure to follow sustainable fashion as much as I can. And lastly I would like to conclude by extending my heartiest gratitude to Miss Neha Kedia and NIFT Gandhinagar for providing us this opportunity and opening windows of exportation through this educational visits and giving us a glimpse of industry life.
