15 TO WATCH/5 SPORTS TECH/POWER OF SPORTS 5: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 25 with Jacob Aere
With a firm handshake and swipe of a pen, the San Diego Padres up their quest to create America's Finest Baseball City. During a press conference officially announcing the signing of third baseman Manny Machado, Padres General Partner Peter Seidler said that Machado's record-setting, $300 million free agent contract was primarily an instinctual baseball decision. “We obviously talked a lot about this and we feel it makes financial sense for us. But it’s as much of a back of a napkin thing as anything,” he said. Seidler added he is confident there will be an incremental revenue lift from the Machado signing in core areas such as sponsorships, ticket sales, and merchandise. However, the 11th hour deal and the club’s poor on-field performance of late will make more meaningful financial gains a multiyear effort. “Ultimately, revenue follows winning and winning is what will really drive that revenue,” Seidler said. Every business decision comes with an opportunity cost, and for the Padres as well as a San Diego sports fan base still stinging from the loss of the Chargers, it's hard not to wonder whether that $300 million wouldn't be better spent shoring up the franchise's farm system than on one infamous slugger.
While Cactus and Grapefruit League games intensify, baseball sees its most significant participation gains since 2014. According to the Wall Street Journal, the number of people who played baseball in the U.S. "surged 21%" from 2014 to 2018, with nearly 15.9 million participants. Most of the gain has come from casual players who play baseball 1-12 times a year. The ranks of those "dabblers grew 53%, or by nearly 2.3 million people" since 2014. The growth of "more frequent baseball players was a modest 5% over four years." However, those numbers are better than in most other amateur sports. Tackle football participation "dropped 3.4% in the past five years," and hockey and soccer saw respective one-year drops of 3.8% and 4.3% in 2018. MLB credits the growth in part to a "program it launched" in 2015, Play Ball, that "holds programs across the nation." Last year, MLB and USA Baseball also "started a program for schools to introduce the game to kindergarten through fourth-grade students in gym classes." Drop offs in other sports are clearly baseball’s gain, and MLB is smart to partner with USA Baseball, Ripken Baseball, and other organizations teaching personal growth and leadership skills alongside baseball fundamentals.
As the NFL Combine opens in Indianapolis, Kyler Murray’s decision to choose the NFL over baseball will continue to be hotly debated. Ric Edelman is a founder of Edelman Financial Engines, which helps more than one million people make financial and career decisions. I asked Ric, would you have advised Murray to play in the NFL or go the MLB route? “In the short-term, Murray could make more money playing football,” Edelman said. “But, if he were to become a star baseball player, he would earn more money in the MLB in the long-term. Just look at the numbers. The top 10 draft picks in the NFL get about $17 million plus an $11 million bonus. By comparison, at least 38 MLB players have deals that large. But like all big financial and career decisions, there’s a lot of emotion involved. That’s why I think Murray made the right decision because he’s said that his heart lies between the hash marks. Besides, if the NFL doesn’t work out, he could go back to baseball, like Tim Tebow is doing now.” Murray’s decision will come under even more scrutiny in the wake of Manny Machado’s $300 million deal with the Padres. If Murray is smart, he will heed Edelman’s wisdom and stay on his current course.
And the Oscar for best ad sales goes to…the Internet. Disney-ABC TV Group's ad sales team confirmed it "sold off the last available unit" for ads during Sunday's Oscars telecast, and thirty-second spots were fetching $2.1-2.2 million, according to AdAge. But the big ad winner this year is digital. Spending on such digital channels as desktop, mobile, search, and social media is expected to pass traditional media formats in the U.S. this year, according to eMarketer, while spending on non-digital TV, radio, print, and billboards is projected to drop. Digital ad revenue was $26.2 billion in the third quarter of 2018, up 22% versus the year prior, according to a report from PwC U.S. It is highly likely that when the Nielsen ratings come in for this year’s Academy Awards telecast they’ll be down from years past – just like every other appointment viewing mega event including the Super Bowl. But it’s a safe assumption that mobile and social numbers for the global event will leap higher than Spike Lee into Samuel Jackson’s arms following his first ever Oscar win.
Investor Kyrie Irving stars in Beyond Meat campaign. Vegan food maker Beyond Meat has already gotten plenty of attention from athletes minding what they put in their finely-tuned bodies. According to Hashtag Sports, Beyond Meat put one of its new investors, Kyrie Irving, in the center of its new paid media push as the company, which has raised $122 million so far, gears up to go public. More and more NBA players are embracing a plant-based lifestyle that increasingly cuts red meat out of the picture. Irving isn't the only athlete interested in the venture; other new investors include a variety of retired and current sports stars including Shaquille O'Neill, Chris Paul, DeAndre Hopkins, Victor Oladipo, Lindsey Vonn, DeAndre Jordan, Harrison Barnes, Shaun White, and Luke Walton. Many athletes have sought to raise their performance by changing their diets. Now, they are literally putting their money where their mouths are as they financially back Beyond Meat.
The NBA ranked No. 3 on Fast Company's 2019 list of the Most Innovative Companies. The magazine noted that in 2018 the NBA "broke attendance records for the fourth straight season," had total revenue increase 25%, and saw its streaming service grow subscribers by 63%. Another reason for the NBA's ranking was the NBA 2K League, the "first extension of pro sports into esports, which has 21 teams and games that stream on Twitch." The NBA last year also "made a deal" with MGM Resorts International, "making it the first pro league to integrate real-time data into a gambling platform and enable the king of in-game micro-betting that keeps viewers watching each and every play." Other organizations with sports ties that were mentioned in the Fast Company rankings include Disney (No. 4), Peloton (No. 14), and Fanatics (No. 40). While the NBA’s competitive expansion has been undertaken by other American sports leagues, the NBA’s international makeup and the success of its many foreign national players have been major factors in its worldwide popularity.
The NFL suffers another black eye with news of Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s impending arrest for solicitation of prostitution. Kraft, one of the NFL’s most influential figures, was charged Friday in connection with an investigation of several massage parlors in Florida suspected of human trafficking ties. According to the Washington Post, an arrest warrant for the 77-year-old billionaire, whose team won its sixth Super Bowl since 2002 this month, will be issued this week for the prostitution-related charges, both misdemeanors. “The charges against Kraft stemmed from a months-long investigation of several massage parlors in three counties in southeast Florida suspected of forcing immigrant employees to engage in sex acts with customers.” Kraft was among 25 men facing charges. The NFL said in a written statement, “The NFL is aware of the ongoing law enforcement matter and will continue to monitor developments.” Kraft could certainly face discipline from the league under its personal conduct policy, which covers owners as well as players.
World No. 2, 17-time Major Champion and three-time BNP Paribas Open Champion Rafael Nadal headlines “Rafa & Friends.” The event is the first-ever Eisenhower Cup presented by Masimo – a one-night Tie Break Tens event scheduled for Tuesday, March 5 during the 2019 BNP Paribas Open. Joining Nadal for the $150,000 winner-take-all event at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden are World No. 8 and 2018 French Open finalist Dominic Thiem; World No. 14 and 2016 Wimbledon finalist Milos Raonic; eight-time ATP Tour winner Gael Monfils; and others. The fast-paced, innovative Tie Break Tens format consists of first to ten-point tie break matches. The players will be divided into two groups for round-robin play, followed by a final match between the group play winners, for a total of seven matches during the course of the evening. All proceeds from the event will benefit four local charities: Masimo’s Patient Safety Movement; Eisenhower Health; Bighorn Golf Club Charities; and Family YMCA of the Desert. The event echoes the "Hit for Haiti" exhibition match organized by Roger Federer in 2010, which raised close to $200,000 for the earthquake torn country.
Tennis World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has a new endorsement with Ultimate Software that includes assignments for his team members. Djokovic is a Lacoste endorser, but will now wear an Ultimate Software patch. Djokovic’s coach, agent, physiotherapist and others will be required to wear an Ultimate Software cap when in the player’s box during matches. The deal mimics one struck last year for another IMG client, Madison Keys. In Keys’ case, it was born out of necessity because Nike, another of her sponsors, would not allow any other logos on her apparel. Florida-based Ultimate Software specializes in HR and payroll software, and also sponsors the Miami Heat and golfer Patrick Reed. An IMG Tennis spokesperson declined to say if the Djokovic team would get paid for wearing the caps. However, Keys’ IMG agent, Max Eisenbud, said the player herself was paying part of her endorsement fee to her team members for wearing the caps. It takes a hatted village to produce a champion tennis player, and it’s only fair that the villagers are compensated.
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in front of a "wet sellout crowd of 69,620" as part of the Coors Light Stadium Series. Despite forecasts of strong rains, the Philadelphia Inquirer noted the "heavy stuff didn’t really ever come down." There was "noticeable pooling along the rink’s edges and particularly in the corners, stopping the puck as if in mud." Despite the "heavier late-game rain, the plan for NBC remained the same. Also part of the weekend success was the PreGame at the 2019 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, the official fan festival. Highlights of PreGame events included the American Legacy Black Hockey History Tour, a mobile museum showcasing black hockey history, and sponsor activations including Coors Light Slapshot; the Dunkin' Fan Zone; a custom penalty box photo opportunity from GEICO; and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Despite the rain, outdoor hockey prevails again.
ESPN has cemented its plans for global coverage of the 2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi. Coverage will begin with a live three-hour special on the Opening Ceremony from Zayed Sports City Stadium on ESPNEWS. The 2019 Special Olympics World Games will span March 14-21, and ESPN’s coverage of these Games will include more live coverage of competition than ever before, offering multiple live feeds each day on ESPN3, delivering more than 25 hours of live coverage across venues and competitions including swimming, soccer, volleyball, basketball and more. Additionally, ESPN will produce an evening studio program airing on ESPN2 and ABC, bringing viewers the stories, athlete profiles, and features from around the 2019 World Games, as well as recapping key results from each days’ competitions. Keep an eye out as we make a special announcement regarding the Special Olympics in the near future.
The Raiders "appear to be close to wrapping up a deal to keep the team playing" at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum this year and "possibly" in 2020. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, an announcement is expected "this week or early next week.” A source said, "It's for one year for sure, with an option for the second year." Under the proposed deal, the Raiders would pay $7.5 million this year, with the rent rising to $10.5 million "if the team stays on" through 2020 in the event that its new $1.8 billion Las Vegas stadium is not ready. Of all the relocation possibilities floated in the last couple of months, from playing in San Francisco to Santa Clara to San Diego, staying put in Oakland is the most sensible plan for the Raiders, and certainly for their fan base there. With the Warriors set to relocate across the Bay to San Francisco next season and the A’s continuing to push for a new bayside ballpark, the Raiders will have more of the hometown spotlight to themselves, which could come in handy if their win-loss record doesn’t improve.
The United States Soccer Federation provisionally sanctioned the National Independent Soccer Association as a professional soccer league, clearing the way for the league to begin play in the fall of 2019. Clubs in Atlanta, Charlotte, New England, and Philadelphia have already announced their efforts to be part of the league, with the rest expected to go public in the coming days. Unlike other American soccer leagues, NISA will play a fall-to-spring season with a winter break, allowing time off during December and January. Upstart offseason pro leagues seem to be all the rage in both football and futbol these days. While NISA has not yet announced a TV carriage deal, the cities on board thus far have proven to be strong soccer markets, which should bode well at least for modest success.
Tom Dundon rescued the Alliance of American Football with a big cash infusion, proving he’s not one of Don Cherry’s “Bunch of Jerks.” The Alliance of American Football has introduced NHL Hurricanes Owner Tom Dundon as the league's new Chairman after his commitment of $250 million last week "enabled the AAF to meet" its financial obligations, according to The Athletic and other sources. Without new investors, there was a "good chance it was going to miss payroll last Friday." Dundon "will continue in his role" with the Hurricanes. About the AAF, one source said, "Without a new, nine-figure investor, nobody is sure what would have happened.” The Hurricanes have also been in the news cycle recently over the comments made by announcer Cherry about their unique victory celebrations, which recently included a limbo line. The team turned Cherry’s “Bunch of Jerks” criticism into a $32 T-shirt that fans have snapped up close to 5,000 so far.
Breakdancing is among four sports shortlisted by the Paris 2024 organizing committee for inclusion at the Olympic Games. According to SportsPro, organizers have proposed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that surfing, sport climbing, and skateboarding also retain their places as additional sports on the program in five years' time. The IOC will consider the proposal before putting it to the executive board at its next meeting of representatives March 26-28, and must reach a decision by December 2020. Surfing, sport climbing, and skateboarding are all making their Olympic debuts at next year’s Games in Tokyo, but 2024 would mark the first time the multi-sport event has featured breakdancing. Breakdancing competitions at Paris 2024 would take the form of head-to-head battles in a similar format used when the sport was included at last year’s Youth Olympics in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires. Paris 2024 said breakdancing was an “obvious choice” for inclusion given that France has the second-highest levels of participation in the discipline behind the U.S. However, the move was considered a blow for sports such as baseball, softball and karate, the additional sports included on the Tokyo 2020 program.

Qatar sports channel beIN Sports has been linked with a possible acquisition by the French company Canal Plus. If the move were to be completed, Canal’s sports rights would increase and its subscriber base would swell to 3.5 million. Although Canal + has struggled with some of its subscriber base shrinking in recent months, this potential deal, which should be completed by summer, would help to address that issue. According to Broadband TV News, both beIN Sport and Canal + lost a substantial chunk of coverage of the French football federation under last May’s deal with Mediapro, which in 2020 will receive rights to cover eight out of 10 weekly Ligue 1 matches. Back in June 2016, the Autorité de la Concurrence barred Canal from an exclusive distribution agreement with beIN Sports, so this is an attempt to at least pull even in a market that it used to dominate.
The NHL receives an extension from Snapchat to add hockey highlights and curated stories. According to Variety, the NHL is delivering a new weekly highlights show on Snapchat to recap the top 10 plays of the previous week and will produce Curated Our Stories for select games and marquee events, making the NHL the first pro sports league to use Snapchat’s third-party curation tools. The NHL is bolstering its Snapchat presence because the league sees unusually high engagement on the platform, particularly among users under 30. Millions of hockey fans share images and videos on the platform every day, and the expanded NHL-Snap partnership includes Bitmoji outfits for all 31 of the league’s teams as well as utilizing geofilters for every team’s home arena. “NHL Highlights,” which will hit Snapchat’s Discover every Wednesday, is produced by Disney Streaming Services, which also operates the NHL app and NHL.TV out-of-market subscription-streaming package in partnership with the league. NHL’s social media engagement numbers are the best of the big American sports. By increasing the volume of digital content, the NHL should see more fans gravitate to the league.
Hulu kicks off its new live sports campaign with some help from basketball athletes. NBA stars Joel Embiid, Damian Lillard, and Giannis Antetokounmpo have signed endorsement deals with over-the-top streaming platform Hulu. Embiid and Lillard activated their deals during the recent NBA All-Star weekend with TV advertising campaigns and social media posts. The campaign is centered on the concept of the players “selling out” to promote Hulu’s live sports content, as accounts for each of the players would have such hashtags as #ad, #paid, #sponsored, #hulupaidme, #neversellout, and #hulusellouts. Although Hulu is best known as an entertainment streaming platform, it also offers live TV on a short-term contract option. According to SportsPro, Hulu also said it added eight million subscribers in 2018 and closed its fiscal year with more than 25 million total subscribers across its subscription on demand and live TV plans in the U.S. The key will be convincing users to shell out big bucks for its live TV service, which comes in at $39.99 per month.
The AI-Powered SendtoNews (STN) signs a multiyear deal with NASCAR Digital Media. According to Media Post, NASCAR Digital Media signed a multiyear deal with AI-powered sports content and monetization service SendtoNews just ahead of last week's Daytona 500 to give NASCAR access to STN’s user network of 1,600 publishers and its Smart Match video platform. As part of the deal, STN will host a library for its publishers comprising NASCAR race highlights, in-car footage, driver interviews, and other footage from the NASCAR Cup Series, XFinity Series, and Truck Series, adding millions of unique views to NASCAR’s content. STN reports that its platform provides a 99% unduplicated audience when compared to NASCAR’s owned-and-operated properties which should allow the brand to reach new audiences without duplicating efforts across its own. SendtoNews is the most recent deal to try and boost NASCAR’s dwindling fan base and push the sport back into the limelight.
Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost starred in a new commercial for Verizon that ran during the Sunday night’s Academy Awards broadcast. According to the Kansas City Star, Yost has "credited a cell phone with being the reason he is alive today." After a "horrific fall from a tree stand at his farm in Georgia" following the 2017 season, Yost's pelvis was "shattered and he was unable to get help." He was able to use his cell phone to call his wife and was "airlifted from his property and had emergency surgery." From now on, if inquisitive reporters were to ever ask Yost “who are you wearing?” he’s most likely to say, “Verizon.”

Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman promotes healthy lifestyles and educational opportunities for young girls and boys at her gala. According to CultureMap Dallas, celebrities such as actor Burton Gilliam, ESPN “Sports Center” anchor Jay Harris, and country singer Imaj mingled with an array of athletes including Deion Sanders, Rick Barry, Ed Belfour, Tim Brown, Homer Bush, and Rick Carlisle among many others on a night when Lieberman presented NBA champion Julius "Dr. J" Erving with a Trailblazer Award, and actor-musician Ice Cube with the Lifetime Achievement Award. All proceeds from the evening go to Nancy Lieberman Charities, which are dedicated to expanding and ensuring that educational and sports opportunities exist for economically disadvantaged youth. Lieberman’s network of charities serves students across the U.S. with basketball camps, clinics, Dream Courts, college scholarships, and school supply programs. It’s a good time for “Lady Magic” to spearhead a gala, as WNBA coverage is on the rise and her storied career and business experience could be crucial for popularizing the women’s league.
Three female coaches in the Alliance of American Football are just the beginning to hire more women in the sport. According to CBS Sports, Jen Welter alongside Birmingham Iron defensive line assistant Lo Locust and Arizona Hotshots wideouts assistant Jennifer King are the three women currently coaching in the new AAF league. The AAF's head of football development, Hines Ward, noted that the blueprint for hiring the women in the league was the NFL's Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship. Locust, a longtime assistant coach at various levels, from high school to arena, spent the past year as a defensive line intern with the Baltimore Ravens, while King was an intern with the Carolina Panthers. Ward says that the AAF is a league of opportunity and after a $250 million bailout during its second week, it’s good to see that certain initiatives may separate it from the NFL and allow the football league to create its own identity.
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield raises money for the Special Olympics. The event is a Special Olympics Ohio Cleveland Polar Plunge that raised money for athletes who are petitioning for the full inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. According to 247 Sports, the February 23 event at Edgewater beach and Mayfield also gave away a pair of signed Bose headphones to one lucky participant. The quarterback had previously announced that he was teaming up with Barstool Sports to benefit the Special Olympics in the greater Cleveland area with a merchandise line featuring flags, sweatshirts, and T-shirts. 100% of net proceeds go towards supporting the Special Olympics. After Mayfield and fiance Emily Wilkinson played Secret Santa during the holidays and the quarterback played in a charity softball game to benefit victims of the fires and shooting in Thousand Oaks, the No.1 pick shows no signs of slowing down his charitable arm.
Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainright’s charity makes its mark in the Dominican Republic. Wainwright is also the co-founder of non-profit organization, Big League Impact (BLI). According to Yahoo Sports, their goal is to connect players and fans with communities in need around the world. In 2018 alone, BLI raised a total of $1.07 million for communities in need with help from 24 total major league players, a partnership with Yahoo Sports, and the generosity of thousands of fans. Last December, Wainwright and others spent time in the Dominican Republic and in partnership with Food for the Hungry, BLI created the “Striking Out Poverty” campaign. Through “Striking Out Poverty,” $200,000 was raised for various projects across the Dominican Republic including baseball fields, water systems, and food and farming programs. Players like Wainwright will be hosting events at Top Golf locations as well as private fantasy league drafts in stadiums across the country to raise awareness about Big League Impact for the upcoming season.
The Chelsea and Manchester City Carabao Cup final matchup at Wembley will feature a focus on mental health. According to Sports Mole, the mental health charity Mind has already forged a two-year partnership with the English Football League that started at the beginning of this season. As part of its collaboration with the EFL and Carabao Cup, Mind ran a host of activities related to mental health before the last Sunday’s afternoon matchup in order to raise awareness and highlight the support the charity provides. By bringing mental health initiatives to a widely watched football event, Paul Farmer, Mind CEO, hoped to ensure fans that they always have somewhere to turn to when dealing with mental health problems. More than just another big ‘football’ clash, this Carabao Cup final blended a social initiative into the English Football League.

New day, new info on the seemingly inevitable, yet never actually happening, Android 8.0 Oreo updates for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. This time it's courtesy of the Samsung-run Turkish website that translates to Are we up to date? which we've referenced in the past, again in connection with the S7.
Well, the quoted date is now May 18 for the S7 and S7 edge (up from April 13 last time). The Galaxy A3 (2017), A5 (2017), and A7 (2017) will follow next, on June 1 (previously May 25). Obviously, as with last time, those deadlines may or may not be met.
Additionally, the dates for one country don't necessarily apply for the rest of the world, but we're still hoping that once it's all finalized, there's no stopping the global rollout.

They should pop right into the the gear
Through the first month of the season, the goaltending situations in both Toronto and Vancouver have worked out quite well. Outshot in 12 of their 14 games, the Leafs are off to a 10 4 start, largely due to the sizzling play of Bernier (6 4, 2.31, .933) and Reimer (4 0, 1.99, .949). Luongo, meanwhile, is 7 4 1 (2.46, .909) for the 9 5 1 Canucks not bad for a guy whose team tried so hard to move him and the 12 year, $64 million contract he signed in 2009..

This Sunday is November 11, an auspicious date within the Chinese tech community because it marks Single’s Day, the world’s largest online shopping day. This year is particularly poignant since it will be the tenth edition of the annual event — also known as Double Eleven — since it was created by Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant.
Single’s Day is huge business today. Alibaba sold more than $25 billion in goods last year as 11.11 moved outside of China into other regions within Asia and beyond. The company has consistently grown its sales tally year-on-year, so it’s fair to expect $35 billion or more in trading to take place this Sunday even though there are doubts over China economy and an ongoing trade war with the U.S.
We’ve dug into the phenomenon so that, this year, you’re well prepared on what to expect.
What is it?
The event is akin to Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the U.S. but it is 2.5 times larger than both of those dates put together. Alibaba discounts a range of products across its online sales platforms which include its Taobao marketplace, Tmall store for brands, AliExpress international services and — more recently — its global businesses. Those include Lazada in Southeast Asia and India’s Paytm, which counts Alibaba and Ant Financial as major investors.
The sale covers obvious goods like smartphones, TVs and other big ticket consumer items but also fashion, clothing, furniture, health products and more. The less expected items that sell well include cleaning products, toilet paper and daily perishables. There’s also a strong demand for cars among other things.
In total, Alibaba saw 1.48 billion transactions worldwide last year with a peak of 325,000 orders per second. Its Alipay payment service clocked 1.5 billion payment transactions with total orders reaching 812 million. All the while, a dominant 90 percent of sales came from mobile devices — that’s well ahead of the U.S. which saw 37 percent during Black Friday and 33 percent on Cyber Monday.

Alibaba is also pushing the festival into offline retail which is in line with its own business, which has expanded into physical stores through its own Hema brand and partnerships with major retailers in China, such as tech giant Suning and hypermarket operator Sun Art.
It was renamed to “11.11 Global Shopping Festival” in 2015 to reflect Alibaba’s efforts to grown the sales outside of its core market in China, and last year it claimed to have attracted over 60,000 international brands with customers located across more than 225 countries.
In the beginning
November 11 wasn’t always synonymous with buying discounted products online. The date first came to prominence in China during the 1990s when it was said to have been promoted as a bachelor celebration day because the date represents four ‘singles.’ It later took on new meaning as a day to celebrate relationships — it is a hugely popular date for marriages — and find potential partners.
The e-commerce component arrived in 2009 when an executive named Daniel Zhang used the date to promote Tmall, Alibaba’s virtual mall for brands, with just 27 merchants participating. Zhang, then in charge of the Tmall business, is now the CEO of Alibaba itself and he will become the firm’s Chairman when Jack Ma — Alibaba’s figurehead for many years — finally steps down from the business next year.
Back in 2009, Alibaba grossed around $7 million on its inaugural Single’s Day. Speaking to CNN this week, Zhang said he “had never expected” that the promotion would become such a huge phenomenon for both Alibaba and the wider e-commerce industry.

Beyond Alibaba
As Singles’ Day blossomed into a national celebration, other e-commerce players such as JD.com and Pinduoduo have also joined in to capitalize on a month of robust consumer spending. JD.com, for instance, saw a 21.1 percent uptick in active users for its mobile app on November 11 last year, according to market research firm QuestMobile.
The event’s warm reception has also inspired competing festivals throughout the year. In 2010, JD.com, which ranked behind Alibaba in terms of transaction volume, runs its Single’s Day festival over a 12-day period and it started its own mid-year shopping event that falls on June 18. Suning, a major Chinese appliance retailer, has turned its August 18 anniversary into a sales event.
None of the latecomers have managed to match the scale of Singles’ Day, however, and Alibaba continues to extend the boundary for the world’s largest shopping event.

Not just numbers
Singles’ Day continues to grow bigger each year, but sales have slowed. Year-over-year growth in gross merchandise volume slid from just under 65 percent in 2014 to around 40 percent in 2017.
But Jack Ma has always been keen to downplay the importance of these numbers. In 2013, he told Chinese media on the eve of November 11 that he wasn’t going after sales figures. He has reiterated a similar message in the succeeding years.
Rather than scale, Ma said he looks for “steady” growth. That’s because the shopping spree demands an overarching infrastructure to power functions such as logistics and payments.
Ma’s words are in line with the company’s ongoing quest for potential partners to power its retail ecosystem. Last year, Alibaba poured $717 million into Huitongda, which runs an infrastructure for online retailers to sell to rural customers — who also participate in Singles Day.
Similarly, Alibaba’s financial affiliate Ant Financial has banked a number of payment solutions companies worldwide to support the e-commerce company’s global reach, while the firm’s cloud computing division handles the demands of selling $25 billion in goods each year. Then there’s logistics platform Cainiao Network which helps handle the 812 million orders that were placed in China last year.
Single’s Day has also seen Alibaba adopt tech technology on a wide scale. Last year, it ventured into AR — Maybelline let customers try its lipstick virtually — Nike is among the brands to have used gamification to attract customers and Alibaba’s own Tmall service adopted ‘virtual fitting rooms’ to help sell clothes.
Offline sales
Alibaba Chairman Ma has also projected what would become a norm for Singles’ Day today. “We want all e-commerce companies to get involved, and all brick and mortar malls to be part of it,” he said.
In 2016, Ma coined the term “new retail” to describe a future of seamless integration between online and offline retail sales. Last year marked the dawn of the shopping festival’s offline push. This year, 200,00 brick-and-mortar stores have signed up for Singles Day to make discounts available to Alibaba customers. A user can, for instance, gets offline deals when she uses Alibaba’s Alipay e-wallet to pay at a mall. Alibaba also uses Alipay to give away cash prizes through red wallet competitions.
Alibaba said last year that New Retail “showed promise” during 11.11, but it declined to provide figures. This year, given Alibaba’s physical retail advancement — it now operates over 30 stores and includes facial recognition-based payment — the offline component will be more important than ever. Beyond Hema and InTime physical shopping, that also includes Ele.me — and Starbucks deliveries — and the rest of its local services delivery platform.
Alibaba’s 11.11 deals will now include Starbucks coffee, which can be ordered exclusively via its Ele.me delivery service thanks to a partnership with the U.S. coffee chain (Image via Alibaba)
Expectations for 2018
The forecast for this year’s Single’s Day 2018 is challenging since it comes against the backdrop of China’s economic struggles and the U.S-Sino trade war which has seen billions in goods tariffed. However, the majority of Alibaba’s sales continue to be in China, both on 11.11 and the rest of the year, so despite its progress on international growth the actions of the U.S. government are unlikely to be felt.
Nonetheless, some key factors:
Slowing growth: Alibaba’s quarterly revenue continues to grow healthily (40 percent plus) but the rate itself is slowing, the same applies to 11.11
Offline: Alibaba is making a concerted offline retail push to offset e-commerce saturation with more deals for those who shop in person
Services: Its on-demand services and delivery platform — reportedly valued at $30 billion — will play a more prominent role in China by offering 11.11 deals
Payments: Alipay is expanding 11.11 deals by offering discounts for shoppers paying through the app online or offline
More global: Alibaba’s international footprint continues to grow and it is pushing 11.11 harder in Southeast Asia, where it has established links with China-based sellers, while it now has dedicated ventures in Russia and Pakistan/South Asia to work with
Either way, Alibaba puts on a real spectacle for the world during 11.11.
First up there’s a star-studded entertainment show that takes place on the eve of the festival and then you can expect constant updates from Alibaba’s Twitter account during the 24-hour period itself. We’ll also be following the latest developments for you right here on Techcrunch.com so stay tuned for more.

15+5+5 To Watch 111819
15 TO WATCH/5 SPORTS TECH/POWER OF SPORTS 5: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 18
with Jacob Aere
 1.     Last Monday was Veteran’s Day, but sport’s support for military personnel continues throughout the month of November. Here’s one great example: Learfield IMG College’s ticket arm is working with 22 of its school partners to provide free football tickets for military personnel for the seventh straight season. The initiative, called “Seats for Service members,” will send 35,000 active duty or veteran military to a college football game this month as a way to honor their service. More than $500,000 in ticket donations have been collected across the country for the program. Penn State took it a step further by hosting personnel at the Bryce Jordan Center for a pre-game tailgate prior to their November 16 game against Indiana. With 8,000 expected to attend the tailgate, it was the largest of its kind in the Big Ten; Penn State followed that up with a decisive 34-27 win over the Hoosiers .
2. A draft agreement between Miami-Dade County and the Dolphins would "pay the team at least" $2.5 million a year for bringing a F1 race to Miami Gardens. According to the Miami Herald, the subsidy is "tied to an existing agreement" from 2014 that pays Hard Rock Stadium up to $5.75 million annually for big events. The drafted F1 agreement would "boost that cap" to $7 million, a 20% increase. However, Miami-Dade Deputy Mayor Jennifer Moon affirmed the Dolphins "dropped the request for the higher cap." Even without the higher cap, the proposed F1 agreement would make the 2014 agreement a "more reliable source of county revenue" for Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross. The Dolphins "already are allowed" a $1 million payment for the Miami Open tennis tournament. International soccer matches “qualify for a $750,000 payment, while a college football championship brings in $3 million. An annual F1 race would let Ross lock in another $2.5 million more for the yearly allocation allowed under the 2014 agreement.
3.   In a new poll commissioned by the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, 77% of voters are for keeping the A's. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, building a privately financed ballpark at the Port of Oakland's Howard Terminal "got the support of 68% of the voters, even if it means setting up a special tax district to pay for infrastructure." The poll also shows that 44% of voters believe the city should “drop its lawsuit over the Coliseum land sale,” compared with 28% who support the lawsuit and 28% with no opinion on the matter." Analytics firm FM3 took a poll of 601 registered voters October 29-November 1 as part of the chamber's annual Pulse of Oakland survey. The poll, "which has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%, came as the clock ticked down" on the deadline Major League Baseball set for the city to "drop the suit or risk the A's relocating to another city.” Since the city has lost the Warriors and soon, the Raiders, it’s not surprising that a majority of voters would back keeping its one remaining pro sports team.
4.   EverFi chants “Let’s Go Lightning.” Last Friday, the Tampa Bay Lightning invited 5,000 middle schoolers from the area to practice as part of their partnership with the Future Goals program from EverFi. The NHL and NHLPA are sponsoring the program that brings hockey into the classroom to explore STEM topics through sports. Future Goals features computer modules aimed at students in third through eighth grades on various topics. “We actually tried to use math and science in our ball hockey stuff,” Vice President of Community Hockey Development Jay Feaster shared with the Tampa Bay Times. “We show angles. If you pass off the boards here, or the different angles in the openings around a goalie.” While some of the students attending the Friday practice were hockey players, EverFi‘s NHL partnership recognizes that even those who don’t play the game have a better time absorbing STEM information through the lens of the sport.
 5.   Black News Channel, the brainchild of former football and political star J.C. Watts, has moved its launch date from November 15 to January 6. The Tallahassee, FL-based network co-founded by former Oklahoma congressman J.C. Watts and TV exec Bob Brillante made the date change to take advantage of new distribution platforms. “If we have the opportunity to include the largest African American audience possible from day one, then that should be our top priority,” said Watts. The network, which offers 24/7 news serving African American viewers, has carriage deals set with Comcast, Charter, and Dish Network, and will be available in TV markets including New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Watts entered the national conversation as a star quarterback for the University of Oklahoma in 1979 and later made a name for himself on Capitol Hill both as a congressman and a lobbyist backing diversity and economic issues still resonating in sports — and elsewhere — today.
6.   The Pac-12 has announced that the University of Washington and Tulane University will meet in 2020 in the sixth edition of the Pac-12 China Game presented by Alibaba Group. Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC), which operates under China’s Ministry of Education, will serve as the co-host for the game. “As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of our Pac-12 China Game and nearly a decade of the Pac-12 Global Initiative, we look forward to the continued relationship between the Conference and our China partners in welcoming Washington and Tulane in 2020,” said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott. “The tenet of our Pac-12 Global Initiative is that higher education and sports have the power to foster learning, understanding and togetherness between people and cultures. We’re proud to work with Alibaba and the FUSC in continued efforts to engage our universities and student-athletes in global experiences.” After last month’s NBA China debacle, it is critical that relations between China and the American sports community continue to positively evolve and strengthen.
7.   Japanese hoops star Rui Hachimura made history before ever stepping on an NBA court. The 6-foot-8 forward became the first player born in Japan to be drafted when the Washington Wizards selected him with the No. 9 overall pick in June. His popularity in Japan is unmatched, making him unique among this year's NBA rookie class. Because of Hachimura's status as a national icon in Japan, there was intense competition to land him as a sneaker endorser. Initially, seven companies presented to Hachimura, including such basketball staples as Nike subsidiary Jordan Brand and multiple China-based companies. Hachimura ultimately decided to sign with Jordan Brand, which offered a blend of proven performance products, marketing cachet around the world, and an opportunity to join a smaller stable of players within the larger Nike umbrella. Look for other major endorsements to come Hachimura’s way for brands eager to penetrate the style-forward Japanese market.
8.   Go Go Gopher. It is "too early to say" how the University of Minnesota's victory over Penn State last Saturday will affect prospective UM student applications, but the school’s PR director Jake Ricker told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that "all the attention the school has received...'can't hurt. UM is now 10-0 for the first time since 1904, and it is "generating an uptick in interest from fans wanting to buy products from the Minnesota Alumni Market." The Penn State victory also generated lots of social media buzz. The team's Twitter account saw 9.2 million impressions, 18,700 retweets, and 133,600 likes on Twitter in the ensuing week. For the entire month of September, the account had only "10.3 million impressions, 7,600 retweets, and 76,800 likes on Twitter." UM's athletic department also said that GopherSports.com "saw about 75% more visitors than the previous week" and the football "saw more than double the number of page views as the previous week." Any tangible long term results won’t be seen until admissions applications for 2020 start rolling in in December and donors open their wallets -- however, the Gophers’ loss to Iowa on Saturday might cause a few bandwagon would-be students to delete their online apps.
9.   WWE and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy have announced that WrestleMania 35 generated $165.4 million in economic impact for the New York/New Jersey region last April, according to a study conducted by the Enigma Research Corporation. This marks a more than 60 percent increase from the $101.2 million generated for WrestleMania 29 in New York and New Jersey and the eighth consecutive year that WrestleMania generated more than $100 million in economic impact for its host region. Over the past 13 years, WrestleMania has now generated more than $1.3 billion in cumulative economic impact for the cities that have hosted the event. WrestleMania 35 also generated approximately $27.1 million in federal, state, and local taxes. A sold-out crowd of 82,265 fans from all 50 states and 68 countries attended WWE’s pop-culture extravaganza this past April, making it the highest-grossing entertainment event in the history of MetLife Stadium. Next year, WrestleMania 36 will take place Sunday, April 5, from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay and looks to positively impact a hurting sports industry in Tampa Bay.
 10. The Chiefs prepare to meet the Chargers in Mexico City — in Colorado. “This will be the third team now, so hopefully that's becoming a trend" -- Air Force athletics Chief Program Officer Nick Kiger, told the Colorado Springs Gazatte, about the Academy hosting the Chargers for practice this week ahead of their game next week against the Chiefs in Mexico City. The first meeting between the division rivals is this Monday night in Mexico City. The game will be played at Estadio Azteca which sits at an elevation of 7,200 feet above sea level, so Coach Anthony Lynn has been leading practices in Colorado Springs this week to prepare his players for the thin air. The NFL is expanding beyond the USA and into Europe and Mexico to try and create a global passion behind American football.
11. TB12, the retail arm of the Tom Brady brand, goes for deeper coverage. John Burns, CEO of TB12, spoke last week of the company's plans to double its retail outlets from two to four in 2020, with one more Massachusetts store in the works as well as another out of state. With a customer base of aging men and women concerned with living an active, pain-free lifestyle, Burns believes that the Patriot quarterback's personal story will prove more compelling than NFL team loyalty. TB12 currently has two retail outlets one at Patriot Place in Foxborough, the other, which opened in late August, on Boylston Street in the Back Bay. The stores sell apparel, workout gear, nutritional and dietary supplements, as well as one-on-one sessions with body coaches that are focused on performance, pliability, and recovery. Now that Brady has cemented his legacy on the NFL field, he looks to a life of success after football in business – looking perhaps to other legendary athletes such as Michael Jordan or Ronaldo as athlete business tycoon role models.
12. The National Women’s Hockey League announced that it had closed a new round of equity funding that ensures continued growth for the league for many years to come. According to Cynopsis, the financing was led by insurance and IT entrepreneur Andy Scurto, who now joins a group of more than 20 NWHL investors. The funding round is another boost for a league whose existence was in doubt after a tumultuous summer. According to Sports Business, the five-team, U.S. based NWHL is continuing to operate despite the fact that more than 200 of the world’s top female ice hockey players pledged to not compete in North America this season in an attempt to gain better pay and working conditions. The NWHL also recently signed a partnership with athlete marketing platform Opendorse in an attempt to increase its players’ presence and engagement on social media. If the players can have their salary wishes met, this league has a chance to become equally prominent to the NHL in 10 years’ time.
13. The shift is here: more fans are streaming sports than paying for TV packages. According to SportsPro, fans are watching more live sport on their smartphones and connected devices than they do on TV, despite the majority of sports media rights being held by linear broadcasters, according to new research by cloud video specialists Grabyo. While more than 50% of fans watch sport via a satellite or pay-TV subscription, Grabyo’s OTT Video Trends Report claims that more than 60% view sports content via either an OTT or premium social media service. Overall, Grabyo’s research found that the global market penetration of OTT services has hit 38%, with DAZN and Kayo Sports cited as the most popular dedicated sports streaming platforms used by fans. Furthermore, Grabyo links a growth in short-form video, real-time highlights, and viral video consumption with the widespread adoption of social media use on smartphones as social media platforms such as Facebook Watch, Twitter, and YouTube TV capitalize on a growing demand for streaming options.
14. ABC officially picked up the new competition series “Ultimate Surfer.” According to Laughing Place, the eight-episode series is set to feature up-and-coming surfers who train and live together as they battle it out at the World Surf League’s Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California, powered by Kelly Slater’s man-made wave technology, in the hope of competing amongst the best athletes in the world’s fastest-growing sport. Production will begin in 2020 and an airdate will be announced later this season. Slater will serve as on-air talent and special correspondent for the show. Alliances and rivalries will be front and center in “Ultimate Surfer” as men and women compete in individual and team challenges focused on specific surfing disciplines. Weekly eliminations will leave two men and two women as finalists who will vie for the male and female titles of the Ultimate Surfer and the opportunity to compete on the WSL World Tour, the pinnacle of professional surfing. Slater’s remarkable, one-of-a-kind, man-made wave – the most even playing field for measuring surf mastery – is at the heart of the series and provides him a boost as a brand while putting the fastest growing sport in the world in the spotlight.
 15. The Houston Rockets lose $20 million in sponsorship over general manager Daryl Morey’s political tweet. According to SportsPro, Morey’s actions last month caused a host of Chinese partners to end their deals with the NBA and its franchises, with the Rockets in particular feeling the pinch. ESPN reports the team has lost the most as a result of the spat with Chinese authorities, with the franchise seeing more than $7 million in revenue disappear this season as a result of canceled sponsorship agreements with Chinese firms and nearly $20 million overall with multi-year deals factored in. Tensions between Chinese companies and the NBA have continued, with little sign of a resolution. NBA commissioner Adam Silver has repeatedly made it clear he will support Morey, despite calls for him to sack the 47-year-old. In addition, players are at risk of losing endorsement deals, including Rockets star James Harden, with ESPN reporting that Harden's endorsement agreement with Shanghai's SPD Bank Credit Card is under threat. Despite the off-court uncertainty, the Rockets have made a solid start to the season. Boasting a 9-3 record as of November 16, they sit second in the Western Conference behind the Los Angeles Lakers.
 Top Five Tech
Bleacher Report’s soccer property B/R Football debuts an interactive show on its YouTube channel. According to Digiday, the series is part of the sports publisher’s recent shift to produce more mid- and long-form programming for platforms like YouTube rather than shorter fare made for social platforms like Instagram. Called “Your Call,” the series will have viewers play the role of an up-and-coming soccer star, making choices such as which soccer team to join and what the size of his contract should be. Since YouTube does not have an official feature to enable interactive videos, B/R Football is using the video recommendations that appear at the end of videos to serve as the interactive elements. Each 45- to 60-second episode will end by presenting viewers with up to four choices. After people select a choice, that corresponding video will play. In total, the series spans 30 individual videos, and the full experience is expected to take eight to 10 minutes to complete. Since October 2018, B/R Football’s YouTube channel has grown from 235,000 subscribers and 10.8 million monthly views to 1 million subscribers and 21.5 million views in October, 2019 thanks to other Bleacher Report properties. Although YouTube is yet to have interactive experiences built into its platform, the B/R experiment may pan out to draw in its biggest new batch of fans to date for a Generation Z that is looking to be more involved with its favorite sports and teams.
The NHL’s Washington Capitals owners launch Caps Gaming Brand. Monumental Sports and Entertainment (MSE), the owners of the Washington Capitals NHL franchise, has launched an esports division called Caps Gaming, which will host a 32-team EA Sports NHL 20 competition. The Caps Gaming Showcase, a six-versus-six ice hockey esports tournament, which will launch on Xbox One, will feature an eight-week regular-season beginning in early December, with the top 16 teams advancing to a postseason stage held in late February, competing for a $15,000 prize pool. As part of Monumental’s gaming expansion, the esports division has also signed up professional NHL gamer John Casagranda, who is also known as “JohnWayne” and joins the Caps Gaming organization as an official streamer on the Caps Gaming Twitch channel until the end of June. In addition to being 2018 NHL Stanley Cup champions, Monumental owns and operates pro sports franchises based in the U.S. capital, including the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the WNBA champion Washington Mystics. By investing heavily in esports, MSE and the Capitals have kept themselves at the forefront of innovation across the NHL and are primed to cash-in on the rise of esports.
NASCAR fans who tweet about Kevin Harvick are awarded free Busch beer. According to Mobile Marketer, the reason Busch was offering free beer for a year to NASCAR fans who tweet about Harvick is due to the fact that Busch Beer sponsored Harvick’s #4 Ford car. The contest took place during the Monster Energy Cup Series finale on November 17 and whenever Harvick led the race, fans who posted tweets with hashtags #Busch4Harvick and #sweepstakes were entered for a chance to win the free beer and a limited-edition Busch can sporting Harvick's signature. Busch determined the number of winners by the final number of laps Harvick led in the NASCAR season finale race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The race is 400 miles long, giving Harvick multiple chances to lead and for Busch fans to win free beer. Busch's Twitter sweepstakes aimed to keep viewers glued to their TV and smartphone screens as the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series concluded. However, there's a bit of irony that Homestead was won by the #18 Toyota car driven by...Kyle Busch.
Advertising and patches in esports take root: Wizards District Gaming pen NBA 2K jersey patch deal with Alarm.com. According to SportsPro, the deal sees the Alarm.com also get virtual in-game signage during Wizards District Gaming play in the NBA 2K League, deepening its relationship with MSE, which also owns the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the NHL's Washington Capitals. Alarm.com will also receive exposure during the NBA 2K League Draft, for which the Wizards’ esports team holds the number one overall pick this season. Further, the partnership features experiential activations, including a Wizards District Gaming sponsored employee program and players appearances, as well as social media features, branded content, digital banner advertisements on the team’s website, and brand integration within Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch. Esports is the perfect place for tech-oriented agencies to advertise to appeal to fans who are always looking to upgrade their digital devices and software.
Sports tech and analytics company Whoop raises $55 million for its discreet wearables. Whoop, which makes a sensor-equipped and screen-free strap that continuously tracks your activities 24/7 and then provides a multitude of performance metrics and other data based on that activity, has closed a round of $55 million funding that it will use to continue expanding its business into a wider range of wearables and analytics that can be gathered around them. According to TechCrunch, the devices measure things like how much strain a workout is causing you, how you are recovering afterwards, your sleep, whether training is having the desired effect, whether you are working at a level that will be less likely to cause injury, and how you are likely to perform. Looking ahead, the plan is to place the sensors into more environments than just the strap it currently makes. One notable shift Whoop has seen in the last year is that it has dropped the price of its wearable from a sizeable $500 down to free. Instead, it bundles the strap into a wider membership program that you do pay for, starting at $30/month and decreasing, depending on what you would like to measure and use the data for – and because it's simpler than Google’s recently-acquired Fitbit, Whoop may find more success by providing simplicity in an over-inundated tech world.

John Cena confronts veteran suicide through charity.  Cena has partnered with the FitOps Foundation, a nonprofit committed to training and certifying veterans as personal trainers as the suicide rate among U.S. veterans continues to increase. According to Sports Illustrated, FitOps runs camps for its training sessions, providing a recognizable feeling for the veterans who attend. In addition to raising awareness about the needs of vets, Cena is also raising funds to expand the FitOps program. A number that really jumped out to Cena to inspire change was that roughly 20 veterans a day commit suicide. In a fundraising effort for FitOps, Cena pledged to match all donations up to $1 million through Veterans Day, as well as offer a VIP meet-and-greet with Cena to one lucky donor. Fittingly, on Veterans Day, the project crossed the $1 million threshold. An integral part of FitOps is rebuilding the sense of community and purpose that many veterans lose when returning to civilian life. While Cena has always showed his appreciation for the military, his current actions have him involved directly.
Senegalese Minnesota Timberwolves center Gorgui Dieng gives back to his home country. According to CNN, the T-wolves center is a seven-year NBA veteran who signed a four-year $64 million contract extension with the team in 2016. With the help of Minnesota-based global health nonprofit MATTER, Dieng set up the Gorgui Dieng Foundation in 2015. The foundation provides aid to Senegal through four different methods: medical, food, agriculture, and athletics. Senegal is a country in which 29.6% of the 15.4 million population live in poverty, according to the World Health Organization. Last summer, Dieng sent 300,000 bags of intravenous fluid to Senegal and visited a neonatal hospital in Diamniadio that benefited from his organization's donations. He's helped send beds, dialysis machines, X-ray machines, and patient monitors for a new dialysis center to his hometown of Kébémer. In recognition of his work, Dieng became the third player to receive the Offseason NBA Cares Community Assist Award on November 8. Dieng and the Timberwolves have started the season at 7-6, and he will look to continue his efforts off the court when he isn’t busy playing in the NBA.
Indonsesian women are using surfing to change societal sexist attitudes. According to Reuters, few local women surf in the Southeast Asian archipelago of 17,000 islands, which has some of the world’s best beaches, dive, and surf spots, including Bali and Raja Ampat, attracting millions of visitors each year.  XX Surf is a surf school with a social mission on the island of Lombok seeking to empower girls through surfing while also tackling issues such as child marriage and teen pregnancy. Indonesia has the world’s eighth-highest number of child brides, according to the United Nations, with one in nine girls marrying before they turn 18 due to poverty and tradition. XX Surf was set up with a mission to change that. Enthusiasm is growing slowly in the country, with 17-year-old Kailani Johnson making history in May as the first Indonesian woman to compete in the pro World Surf League Women’s Championship Tour. XX Surf, donates a third of its profits to a local charity supporting girls’ education and hopes to inspire gender-equality change through sport, especially with surfing set to debut at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
The United Soccer League looks to launch a women's league rivaling NWSL and bring in USWNT players. According to Yahoo! Lifestyle, the United Soccer League is looking into starting a Division I women’s league by 2021. This comes two weeks after the NWSL introduced allocation money, though USWNT players would be kept out of the influx of cash. Some USL owners also own NWSL teams, and the league, which is the second tier in men’s professional soccer in the United States, announced earlier this month plans to include women in the USL Academy. The news is similar to what’s happening in the hockey world, where the National Women’s Hockey League is fighting to grow the sport while fighting other competing forces. With two competing leagues, it is likely that there may be more pressure to increase salaries for women in U.S. soccer leagues in order to have them play for one league over another.
All-electric racing series Formula E sees BBC extension to include two races on FTA television. According to SportsPro, the Marrakesh ePrix on February 29 and the Rome ePrix on April 4 are the two races that have been chosen for the BBC’s television coverage, although it is not yet confirmed which channels will air the events. The extension will also see the BBC continue to show every Formula E race across its online platforms, including the BBC iPlayer and its website. Coverage of select races will also be available via the BBC red button. The expanded deal comes ahead of Formula E’s return to the UK, with a double-header race through London’s ExCel exhibition center and along the waterfront on the streets of the Royal Docks set to close the 2019/20 season on July 25-26. Formula E, which debuted on the BBC last season, will also be broadcast in the UK this season on Discovery-owned channel Eurosport, with select events also being shown live on free-to-air network Quest. This is an eco-friendly racing league that allows for the same excitement as non-electric racing with the benefit of no negative carbon emissions and could set an example for NASCAR in the U.S.

“I’ll take Taco Bell for $100,000,” one “Jeopardy!” contestant was hoping to say.
Georgia Tech freshman Rishab Jain was hoping to win "Jeopardy!" and spend the $100,000 prize money on Taco Bell for life. Unfortunately, the 18-year-old didn't win the competition, but the fast food chain isn't letting him go empty handed.  ("Jeopardy!")
Rishab Jain, an 18-year-old contestant on the television game show’s college tournament, said if he won the grand prize money of $100,000 in the championship round, he would use the cash to buy “a lifetime supply of Taco Bell," specifically Mexican Pizzas and Crunchwrap Supremes.

Adidas’ college football uniforms are no longer universally terrible
I’m not sure exactly how to deal with this.
There was a time when an Adidas alternate signaled peril for college football fans. Adidas uniforms tried too hard to be futuristic and turned out just plain bad. And when I say they used to be bad, folks, they used to be an abomination:

Seriously, look at what Adidas did to UCLA’s gorgeous color scheme for the regular set:
And the alternate look will make any man, woman, or child shudder. (Thankfully, Under Armour has since fixed UCLA’s threads.)

They did this to Texas A&M:

Adidas also committed this war crime against both Nebraska and Wisconsin in the same game:

The brand has seen some defection from its ranks in recent years
Adidas has for quite a while been just a step above Russell Athletic in the uniform hierarchy, when you ask just about anyone, but lagging far behind the top two apparel behemoths in the cool factor. Nike reigns supreme, and Under Armour’s come into its own lately.
UCLA, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Michigan, and Wisconsin have all left for either Nike or Under Armour. Leaving Adidas was something greeted with some celebration by fans.
Our resident Notre Dame fan on staff, Jessica Smetana, shared literal text rants with her dad about Adidas’ aesthetic scourge upon her program:
Who/what/why/how those designs ever get made/approved/manufactured/sold is mind-boggling. It’s almost like the Adidas designers were so creatively stifled by the usually boring Notre Dame uniforms that they said to themselves, “What is the most shit we can get on one uniform at one time?” and then layered 18 disconnected designs on top of each other and called it a day.
But Adidas has clearly turned a corner of late, making some great threads. Schools that stuck around are being rewarded.
Miami will have a couple of alternate uniforms this fall, including all-green “Miami Nights” ones worn on Sept. 23 vs. Toledo, and an all-black look that will be worn on Oct. 12 vs. Georgia Tech.
Adidas/@MiamiHurricanes
Adidas/Miami Athletics
Rutgers got some sick all-black uniforms from Adidas for its upcoming game against Maryland from Yankee Stadium.

Adidas also unveiled these extremely good Nebraska alternate uniforms for the next time the Badgers and Huskers meet:

— SB Nation CFB (@SBNationCFB) July 27, 2017
It’s really subtle and really simple. It’s also really cool. The number fonts are designed to mimic the old mesh material that college football teams wore before the high-tech era of uniforms began.
These Indiana alternates pay tribute to a former coach. The jerseys and helmets are nice, but the pants might take some getting used to.

Miami was once among Nike’s crown jewels, but after Florida and Florida State were given extensions to their Nike agreement, The U took its business elsewhere and embraced the three-stripe life. Miami fans were less than pleased.
But they’ve been rewarded with this sweet fauxback set:

Kansas got some cool alternates last season:
Kansas Athletics
Texas A&M got a pretty sleek uniform set as well:
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports
Rutgers is one of Adidas’ new teams for 2017, and the Scarlet Knights got a uniform set much more stripped down then their Nike look last season.
They went from this ...

The military look wasn’t awesome last year by Adidas, but it could be much worse. At least there were no Army fatigues or gaudy overly patriotic colors.
This Saturday, we honor those who serve and have served to defend and protect our freedom. : https://t.co/5FfIugzQt4#HailState #USA http://pic.twitter.com/uZIwOF9zEO

— LouisvilleFootball (@UofLFootball) November 1, 2016
Gone are the days of the Louisville angry bird. It seems like Adidas is headed for a more conventional simplistic fauxback path, and that’s very good. It seems to be a broader trend across college football. Hell, even Oregon is toning down the crazy colors a bit:
"We're going to try to stick to more traditional colors this year," Kenny Farr, UO's football equipment administrator, said via the Oregonian, though Oregon’s new uniforms aren’t out yet. "Trying to kind of simplify a few things but still keep it modern and keep it looking really good."
This isn’t just about football uniforms, but Adidas’ entire business is doing well.
Sales are up:
The company expects net income from continuing operations to rise 26 percent to 28 percent for the full year, up from as much as 15 percent, it said late Thursday. The shares climbed as much as 7.4 percent in early Frankfurt trading on Friday.
Adidas is benefiting from booming demand for retro shoes and a steady stream of new models that made the brand a hot commodity in the U.S., helping it regain ground it earlier lost to industry leader Nike Inc. The German company is also capitalizing on a growing middle class in China, which is adopting a more active lifestyle, and strong demand for more fashionable sportswear worn outside of gyms.
You’re doing well, Adidas. Now don’t mess this up.
