Momentary Distraction by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: A young, wild male Puma (Puma concolor) has a lot on his mind. This cat, called "Simba" by local guides, was on his own for the first time in his life. His mother "Sarmiento" would tolerate him on her territory for a short time. Then he would have to find a new home, and his own territory away from the dominant male in the area. Biologists call this "dispersal." Here Simba looks back at the awkward humans as he enjoyed a quiet moment overlooking the valley where he grew up. He would soon be gone, in search of his own territory and a new life.

We got our first decent snowfall of the winter, and watching my dogs play in the stuff is always my favorite part! I swear, I get one good "This is a summary of my dogs" silly trio photo a year, so here's one for 2024! :P

Empire Sun

Here's the setting sun as seen from Empire, Michigan. Once again I set off this evening with the green flash in mind, and once again it was not to be, though I got closer to a clean western sky. It was a crystal clear throughout the day, but there was a bit of smoke and muck in the way once I got over to Empire near end of day. The results are not terrible, and I was able to test out a new teleconverter. The ultimate test of that will be with a full moon, so look for that in a fortnight. Apex Predator of Patagonia by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: She went over the hill like it was a small fence. When she hit the ground she noticed the humans at the foot of the hill. Bold and confident, the wild Puma (Puma concolor) didn’t retreat. She didn’t hide. She strutted right past us with her head held high. Down here the Puma is the apex predator. With no competition from bears, wolves or jaguars - the primary competition faced by this species in the other portions of its range - the Patagonian Puma can be viewed in the open and in the daylight.at least in the protected areas like the national parks.
