Today the Church remembers St. Razhden, Martyr.
Saint Razhden is the Protomartyr, or first martyr, of Georgia. He was descended from a noble Persian family. When King Vakhtang Gorgasali of Georgia married the daughter of the Persian king Hormuzd III Balunducht, the queen took Razhden with her to Georgia.
In Kartli, Razhden converted to the Christian Faith, and King Vakhtang presented him with an estate and appointed him as a military adviser and commander.
At that time, Georgia was under heavy political pressure from Persia. Enraged at King Vakhtang’s clearly Christian convictions, the Persian king Peroz (Son of Yazgard III, 457-484 AD) attacked Georgia with an enormous army. His accomplishments in this battle earned Razhden his distinction as a brave and virtuous warrior.
Before long the furious King Peroz ordered that “a certain Persian aristocrat who had converted to Christianity and survived the battle” be taken captive. The Persians surrounded Razhden, bound his hands and feet, and delivered him to their king. Peroz received him with feigned tenderness, saying, “Greetings, my virtuous Razhden! Peace be to you! Where have you been all this time, and for what reason have you turned from the faith of your fathers to confess a creed in which your fathers did not instruct you?”
Razhden fearlessly asserted that Christianity is the only true faith and that Christ is the only true Savior of mankind. King Peroz tried to conceal his anger and cunningly lure Razhden to his side, but his attempt was in vain. Convinced that his efforts were futile, Peroz finally ordered that the saint be beaten without mercy. The expert executioners trampled Saint Razhden, battered him, knocked out his teeth, dragged him across jagged cliffs, then chained him in heavy irons and cast him into prison.
When the news of Razhden’s suffering and captivity spread to Mtskheta, the Georgian nobility came to Peroz and requested that he free the holy man. Peroz consented to their request, but made Razhden vow to return.
Razhden arrived in Mtskheta, bid farewell to his family and the beloved king Vakhtang Gorgasali and, despite his loved ones’ admonitions to the contrary, returned to Peroz. The Persian king tried again to return Razhden to the religion of the fire-worshippers. But seeing that he would not be broken, Peroz instead ordered his exile to a military camp at Tsromi in central Georgia. Then he secretly ordered the chief of the Persian camp to turn him away from Christianity and to execute him if he refused. “Your flattery and bribes are insulting to me. With joy I am prepared to endure every suffering for the sake of Christ!”
Razhden replied to his appeals, “If he hopes in the Crucified One, then he also is fit to suffer crucifixion!” Such was the Persians’ verdict. They erected a cross, crucified Christ’s humble servant, and prepared to shoot at the pious man with bow and arrow. “Into Thy hands, O Lord, I commit my spirit!” were the last words of Saint Razhden. He died on August 3, c. 457 AD.
That night a group of Christians stole the Persians’ cross, took the holy martyr’s body down from it, and buried his holy relics in secret. A few years later Vakhtang Gorgasali translated Saint Razhden’s relics from Tsromi to Nikozi (in central Georgia) and interred them in a cathedral that he had built there not long before. King Vakhtang later erected churches in honor of Georgia’s first martyr in Ujarma and Samgori in eastern Georgia.
Almighty God, who gave to your servant Razhden boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

The Eastern Orthodox bishop who likes cartoon animations
(RNS)– Early in the afternoon on the very first day of September, grownups and kids walked along the streets of Nikozi, a historical town in main Georgia that is house to a few of the nation’s earliest Christian churches. The pedestrians assembled on a yard where a band was playing Georgian folk music, followed nearby by a hand shadow puppet program and a presentation of Georgian folk…

Georgia’s Orthodox Hold Easter Services Despite Lockdown
By Stefan J. Bos, Chief International Correspondent BosNewsLife
TBILISI/BUDAPEST (BosNewsLife)– Orthodox believers in the ex-Soviet republic of Georgia
Tumblr media
held church services, despite warnings that they complicated efforts to halt the new coronavirus pandemic. Worldwide, millions of Orthodox Christians celebrated Easter – the most important festival in their calendar, amid a series of restrictions and bans to prevent more infections.
Governments in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa had asked not to attend church services, saying it could lead to a rise in people suffering from the new coronavirus COVID-19. But dozens of Orthodox believers gathering in the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi ignored these warnings. However, footage showed they observed social distancing rules.
Authorities and doctors expressed fear the church services could infect many more people in Georgia. And international traveler Adrian Avendano, who witnessed the believers gathering, expressed surprise. “The church here has a lot of power,” he said. “That is why they can get away just by skipping all the rules and staying open and letting people to the Mass. So if the government comes in and shuts them down, there will be a lot of uproar within the community here,” Avendano complained.
More people attended services in big churches across the country, though some bishops called on their flock to stay at home and follow services through television or social media.
CHURCH LEADERS
However, Georgian church leaders also urged Christians not to be afraid amid the coronavirus outbreak. Metropolitan Isaiah of Tskhinvali and Nikozi said in an interview that he has already changed the schedule of the liturgy. That’s due to the coronavirus outbreak. Also, the way Communion is conducted has changed, the church leader explained. “We should not be afraid of death, but we should be very careful about life,” he added.
He spoke before what the Orthodox Church views as Holy Fire was brought to Georgia on Saturday night by a charter flight from Jerusalem. It followed a ceremony, symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus Christ from death on the cross, which was attended only by Christian clergymen for the first time in centuries.
Worshippers arrived at Georgia’s main cathedral in Tbilisi before the 9 p.m. start of the curfew. They planned to stay on church premises until its end at 6 a.m. Violators face a 3,000 lari ($1,000) fine. But elsewhere in the former Soviet Union, Russia’s Orthodox Church agreed to break its annual traditions.
It has been urging millions of believers not to attend church. Worshippers usually visit late-night processions to receive blessings. But this year, Easter services are held only in the presence of priests and other church leaders.
