Marcus is leaning on one hand with a frustrated expression that is half a fake smile and half a grimace. The tiger is wearing a colonial powdered wig, a red coat, and a jabot, and is blathering on about nothing. Katie is an Asian girl with light skin, dark red eyes, straight black hair in a ponytail, and sharp features. She is wearing a golden crown, a white blouse with transparent bubble sleeves over a black high-neck top, and a red skirt. She is crossing her arms and rolling her eyes. In the background, Nina is running at Quill with a sword. In the last panel, Nina hits Quill with the flat of the sword, making a “BONK” sound. Quill is cartoonishly squished underneath. here are my character references for this year’s art fight!!!!! it’s the first time I’ve drawn some of these characters in full, so I’m kind of elated, even though I actually meant to finish this two weeks earlier than I did... but then life happened. at least they’re done!

Over a white t-shirt, she wears an overall dress which she has decorated with several symbols, such as a sun and moon, a smiley face, and red fruits. Next is Marcus Delenitor, a medium-height, thin Black boy, and Nina’s twin brother. He has dark brown hair cropped close to his head and brown eyes with yellow, star-shaped irises. Over a black sweater and tan pants, he wears a long, grey track jacket with yellow accents, which sharpens into points at the collar and at the ends, making Marcus’s silhouette look almost star-shaped. He carries a dark brown satchel over one shoulder, which is held shut by a golden, star-shaped clasp.

Next is Katie Marrows, a tall, thin Southeast Asian girl with tanned skin and a diamond-shaped face, whose long, straight black hair is tied back in a low ponytail by a white ribbon, the ends of which are drawn to look like the faces of ghosts. She has red-brown eyes, black lipstick, and a black, diamond-shaped earring in one ear. She is also wearing a black choker and a pair of black fingerless gloves, as while as a red hoodie over a white shirt and jeans. She is the only character to be drawn floating instead of standing normally; her legs dangle in the air underneath her.

Next is Chester Boxwood, a short, fat White boy with very pale skin, neon green eyes, square-shaped features, and freckles. He has short, straight hair dyed light purple, which sticks up at the front, and a pair of dark purple glasses. He is wearing a large cloak which matches his hair and a pair of white boots.

Next is Avery Acosta, a medium-tall, thin Indigenous Latina girl with dark skin, an oval-shaped face, and short, curly black hair dyed neon blue at the ends. She has central heterochromia, meaning that her eyes are brown, but turn blue at the center. She wears a lab coat and a striped blue tie. She is drawn holding a clipboard and pencil.

Next is Thomas Zanderre, a very short, fat Black half-elf boy with slightly pointed ears, softer features, and extremely dark skin. His eyes are silver, and extensive use of magic has caused rainbow-colored cracks to appear throughout his cheeks. His hair is shoulder-length, bright red, and being worn in dreadlocks. He wears a black hoodie with cloud-like fur around the collar and a rainbow drawn on the pockets, as well as matching, furry boots.

Last is Alex Katt, a very tall, gangly White-coded siren boy with sharp features, messy, light brown hair, fangs, pigeon feathers growing around his face, large pigeon wings, and pink pigeon legs. He has heterochromia, meaning that one of his eyes is black, but the other is gold. He wears a black t-shirt, which is held together around his shoulders and back by a series of gold clasps. He also wears a pair of black shorts. Over both of these, he wears a white robe, which is attached to a gold collar clasped around his neck, and a gold belt clasped around his waist. End ID]

Your story is quite interesting honestly. I'm curious about your main characters too so if you're okay with it I'd love to hear about them

oh!! absolutely I love talking about them :D

my two protagonists are nina delenitor and marcus delenitor. they’re twins! it’s not important, but their birthday is october seventh. at the start of the story they’re eleven, but the story takes place over a span of four years, so by the time it ends they’re fifteen.

nina is a water magician who wants to use her magic to improve the lives of others, and bring them joy where there was none! 

her main inspirations are a performer she saw when she was little, who would use her wind magic to make paper jellyfish lanterns fly through the sky, and her brother marcus, who has always gone out of his way to help others with his knowledge. she’s seen him notice the weathered material of a school building and go searching for a construction worker, just so he could let him know.

growing up with marcus has had a strong influence on her, and subconsciously she’s always wanted to be more like him. however, she’s a very different person! nina is someone who excels at in-the-moment decisions, going with the flow and adapting to the moment at hand.

she is creative, persistent, and has a million ideas in her head at once. these are all good, helpful traits, but she has been taught to see them as bad traits, and so spends a lot of her arc trying to change herself to be more rigid and orderly, copying the traits marcus has that she doesn’t.

her arc is about learning to appreciate the person she is, and to pair her skills and traits with her desire to help others in order to have a real impact on the world. 

some miscellaneous traits about her are that she uses a rapier for combat, her associated color is pink, her associated animal is the jellyfish, and her associated flowers are chrysanthemums!

marcus is a fire magician in addition to being a pacifist. 

he’s made up of an insatiable curiosity. he wants to learn all there is about the world, and to make that knowledge available for others. he wants, more than anything, to give people the information they need to learn and grow, be aware of the world as it is, and make better decisions.

this is a desire he has always had, even since he was little, and growing up he’d often disappear for hours at a time, only to be found in a library. 

in addition to idealizing scholars, teachers, and librarians, he also greatly admires his sister. while nina doesn’t do so good in a classroom, she loves to learn about water magic. marcus knows how she often stays up late practicing her magic, trying to mimic some new skill she found in a book or a show.

he thinks her devotion to learning all that she can about her magic is inspiring, and he wants to be able to instill that devotion in others. just as nina supports him, marcus loves and supports nina more than anyone. 

in terms of skills, marcus is academically talented and very, very studious. he’s great at putting together a plan and making sure everyone sticks to it. however, he’s not so great at acting things out; if things don’t go exactly to plan, marcus tends to become stagnant, overwhelmed by the moment and unable to make a decision.

his arc is about learning to work around this panic and make the right choice, even if it’s not a choice he was able to predict. in terms of motifs, he’s always seen carrying around a satchel filled with well-worn journals, his associated color is yellow, his associated animal is the crow, and his associated flower is the king protea!

im not sure if you want to know about katie and chester as well, so I’ll sum them up real quick: 

katie marrows is a death magician who can commune with ghosts. she is loyal to her friends, and distrusts authority figures. her associated animals are dogs, and her associated color is red. 

chester boxwood is a life magician who can heal others and speed up the growth of plants. he idolizes his older sister, and wants the power to protect the ones he loves. his associated animal is the gecko, and his associated color is purple.
