Thinking about how this man needs to get himself in check and how if someone is telling you a story ABOUT someone you love, you do not lovingly gaze DIRECTLY INTO THEIR EYES.

You envision the story they're telling, you smile fondly as you picture the person they're talking about.

He isn't thinking about El here. He straight up can't be. I don't think I have ever been physically capable of spacing out/envisioning something while maintaining steady eye contact, it's like a proven thing that you look away to imagine things.

He even moves his eyes down to Will's lips! Not even gonna unpack that, this is only to say that even if he were thinking of El, he would not be present enough to dart his eyes around like that. Never breaking eye contact also means he never thinks to himself.

He is present. And he is looking at Will.
