Basics:
Recap I RP about anything that could be brought up. From shitposting to full out violence, gore and so on. This is TF2 after all. Some more sensitive subjects might take place depending on the situation/plot, and so on.
If you are not sure about something just ask me, I hardly bite.
I will tag some things the best I can and some will be put under a readmore.
I love AUs and other things alike though if there are to be crossovers it will depend I am not too picky. Does not mean I don’t want to RP with you otherwise.
I am a ‘single’ ship blog. So when I say muse is taken, he’s taken.
Chemistry for either family, lovers or friends is a must.
When it comes to shipping I will not judge what and who you ship with. To each, their own just do not expect me to ship something you do and vice Versa.
I don’t always follow back everyone, so please take no offense I appreciate follows it just things clog my dash or your muse just might not be the type my muses would interact with but don’t feel too say to hit me up even if we are not mutuals.
As I have said I RP with just about anyone, these are multiverse muses, OCs are welcome obviously. Just please have a bit of a background history so I can understand what kind of characters they are.
I would be happy to interact with more than one version of Canon characters, Au or not and such.
I AM open to constructive criticism about my OC, I am always looking to improve and correct errors.
No nos:
Do not kill my muses without having talked about the situation, give a fair fight. You can fatally injure but NO KILLING unless there is an okay Please. It would be rather rude to flat out kill my character.
Having scuffles and fights can be spontaneous. If my character pisses yours off feel free to take a shot at him. Expect him to react the same way vice versa.
Don’t expect him to go down after one hit. Russet is literally a mass of muscle.
No Godmodding or try to OP my muses right off the bat. Unless it is a thing your muse can do as a power just give a head’s up in the tags or PM.
Do not force my muses into a relationship unless both parties agree and there is chemistry. That means just because one ships it the other mun might not. Crushes and unrequited love are just as great.
I won’t RP mature situations with minor RPers and muses below the age of at least 18 so don’t ask. It does not mean i won’t RP with you otherwise.
New rule added that if we do not interact, IC or OOC anywhere from three weeks to a full month I will unfollow, simple as that. Unless said person disappears I’ll give it a while first before it seems they are not coming back then proceeded to do so.
About Mun:
Mun is a 25+ year old female. So in case of things needing to be “legal” there you go. But I wont RP smutty things with minors. So please don’t lie about your age.
New Note that I am uncomfortable with RPing with people younger than 18-20 as I feel like a total creep otherwise.
OOC is  [ ]
As far as I have been RPing at least 9 years by now but my writing can still get hazy due to dyslexia. so excuse any grammar mistakes as I will try to make sure they are correct. Though as of late my details have been lacking due to health issues so if I sound off or does not make sense let me know and I will try to clarify.
I DO RP in the PM box, so if things seem to skip that is why. If you prefer to use one of the alternatives to RP then that is fine.
I hope I do not appear intimidating as I am actually a nervous cluster of anxiety, so i am more likely to be shyer than you and hope to make friends.
Your length is my length so it can go from short to long and detailed as i can get. But something of substance is great. One liners are mostly for crack RPs.
Mun has NO triggers save not wanting to talk politics

Saw something in the further reading section of Michael Kulikowski’s Imperial Tragedy (Profile, 2019) today:
There are countless books on the fall of the western Roman empire, and more appear annually, with variable scholarly trappings but nearly all quite conventional. Still, ripping yarns and neo-Victorian analyses can be found in any bookshop. So, for those so inclined, can thinly disguised nativist tracts on how immigration (and ‘immigrant violence’) brought down the empire. To name names would be invidious.
I thought this was a dig at Peter Heather, Professor of Medieval History at King’s College London and author of The Fall of the Roman Empire (Oxford, 2005) and Empires and Barbarians (Oxford, 2009), so I looked it up and discovered that not only was I right, but Kulikowski has serious beef with the guy:
Peter Heather has been fiercely criticized by members of the so-called Toronto School of History. Michael Kulikowski, who belongs to this group, has accused Heather of neo-romanticism and of wishing "to revive a biological approach to ethnicity". Kulikowski claims that Heather "manifests a clear methodological affinity" to the 19th-century writer of the Goths Henry Bradley.
But Kulikowki’s beef is nothing next to the righteous fury of Guy Halsall, Professor of History at the University of York:
Guy Halsall has identified Peter Heather as the leader of a "counter-revisionist offensive against more subtle ways of thinking" about the Migration Period. Halsall accuses this group, which is strongly associated with University of Oxford, of "bizarre reasoning" and of purveying a "deeply irresponsible history". Halsall writes that Heather and the Oxford historians have been responsible for "an academic counter-revolution" of wide importance, and accuses them of deliberately contributing to the rise of "far-right extremists".
Halsall got so mad at Heather, first at the 2011 Leeds International Medieval Conference and then online, at his blog, that he threatened to leave academia entirely:
Well, it's more or less a year since I started doing this blogging lark 'seriously' (the inverted commas are obviously necessary).  And, as they say, what a roller-coaster of a year it's been.  I've shut down the blog twice, brought it back twice, come to the verge of formal complaints being sent to my university twice (once justifiably, once most certainly not), lost at least one friend, lost 99% of the respect I had for someone I had hitherto held in high esteem, quite possibly lost the chance of a job I wanted because of this blog, taken some pretty visceral abuse, and so on.  All good fun!
On the other hand I have learnt some lessons.  One is that even bastards have feelings.  Another is that if you have twenty-odd followers and maybe 100 hits a day, that (allowing for hits from people looking for something else, like Elizabeth Kostova's novel The Historian or ever-popular balding guitarist The Edge) does not mean that  only twenty or thirty people in the whole wide world read your blog.   Thus you need to be a bit more careful about what you say and how you say it.  I've also learnt that eminent historians don't always read what you write very carefully, and just how deeply-ingrained the elitist culture of the British historical profession is, as well as just how few principles are actually held by the overwhelming majority of the practitioners of said profession.  And this in response to something that I actually thought long and hard about how I wrote.
And as a result of all this I have realised that no good is going to come of me continuing to smack my head against the glass ceiling that those of us not from 'a particular socio-educational background' (you know the one) eventually run up against.  I have instead come to the decision, essentially, to give up on it and 'seek my fortune' elsewhere than in the confines of the academic career-path, as it is now constructed in the UK at any rate.*  I'm actually quite excited about this as I think it offers a lot of possibilities, creatively and ethically.  It's been a liberating decision.  Those of you who know that I set most store by the writings of those co-opted into the canon of the existentialists (almost none of whom ever called themselves by that name) will appreciate exactly why I am proud of this decision.
To some extent it makes up for the bad faith I showed in backing down and removing my post on why it matters to get angry about the lazy and irresponsible (indeed, yes, just downright knuckle-headed) way in which some historians in and/or produced by our most prestigious Thames Valley-based university write about politically and socially sensitive topics like migrations.
Halsall ultimately sanitized the 2011 IMC paper that started the war with Heather --  the neutered version is still up on his blog -- but the original was apparently quite something:
Perhaps unsurprisingly for those who’ve heard him speak or read him on the Internet, this was the one that really started the war. [Edit: and, indeed, some changes have been made to these paragraphs by request of one of those involved.] The consequences, if not of this actual speech, at least of its subsequent display on the Internet, have been various, unpleasant and generally regrettable, and I don’t want any of them myself.
Thankfully, the purged parts of the original were reproduced by some noble soul on the Civilization Fanatics forums before they were lost to the ages:
Thus we can have Ward-Perkins’ sneering parody of late antiquity studies and Peter Heather’s distortions of counter-arguments. In many people’s minds the choices before us are evidently, either, that nothing happened, or, that there was a huge catastrophe caused entirely by invading barbarians. Obviously this is not the case. Plenty of people other than me -- most famously, Walter Pohl -- have written about serious, dramatic change happening in the fifth century without blaming it on the barbarians and without denying that there were migrations in the fifth century. Yet this -- if I dare call it such -- third way seems nevertheless to be very much a minority position.
But I am not convinced that a simple lack of exposure to sensible alternatives really explains the continuing, fanatical devotion to the idea of the barbarian migrations, especially outside the academy.
I have recently said that:
“When a British historian places an argument that the Roman Empire fell because of the immigration of large numbers of barbarians next to arguments that the end of Rome was the end of civilisation and that we need to take care to preserve our own civilisation, when another British historian writes sentences saying “the connection between immigrant violence and the collapse of the western Empire could not be more direct” [a direct quote from Peter Heather’s Empires and Barbarians (Oxford, 2009)], and especially when the arguments of both involve considerable distortions of the evidence to fit their theories, one cannot help but wonder whether these authors are wicked, irresponsible or merely stupid.”
Obviously, these are not mutually exclusive alternatives.
Are these writers setting themselves up as ideologues of the xenophobic Right or have they simply not realised the uses to which such careless thinking and phrasing can be put? You can draw your own conclusions, although it is worth noting that Ward-Perkins has been happy enough to write on this subject for the neo-liberal magazine Standpoint, which regularly publishes pieces attacking multiculturalism. There comes a point when one has to admit that actually the most charitable explanation for all this really is that these writers are simply a bit dim.
Outside academic circles, it is certainly the case that the adhesion to the idea of barbarian invasion has a heavily right-wing political dimension. Apart from the barbarians’ role as metaphor, already discussed, it is worth, very briefly, thinking about the other reasons why people are so ready to pin the blame on the barbarians. Slavoj Zizek’s Lacanian analysis of antisemitism provides some valuable ways forward. Essentially, the barbarian, like the figure of the Jew, acts as a screen between the subject and a confrontation with the Real, which Zizek sees, slightly differently from Lacan, as the pre-symbolised; things that haven’t been or can’t or won’t be encompassed in a world view. Zizek showed that arguments that “the Jews aren’t like that” are almost never effective against anti-Semites because what real Jews (or actual immigrants, one might say) are like is not the point. Similarly, arguments about the empirical reality of the fifth-century cut little weight with those wedded to the idea of Barbarian Invasion. Just as the anti-Semite takes factual evidence as more proof of the existence of the international Zionist conspiracy, the right-wing devotee of the Barbarian Invasions sees factual counter-arguments as manifestations of the liberal, left-wing academy peddling its dangerous multicultural political correctness. I have read a great deal of this on internet discussion lists -- including a review of my own book, and one of James O’Donnell’s! Michael Kulikowski received a similarly-phrased review from a right-wing academic ancient historian.
The barbarian is the classic “subject presumed to”. The barbarian can change the world; he can bring down empires; he can create kingdoms. The barbarian dominates history. “He” is not like “us”, enmeshed in our laws, our little lives and petty responsibilities. The barbarians -- and you only need to read Peter Heather to see this -- are peoples with “coherent aims” (a quote), which they set out single-mindedly to achieve. No people in the whole of recorded human history have ever had single coherent sets of aims. Well -- none other than the barbarians anyway.
Halsall has never resiled from his belief that Heather was essentially a fascist, nor backed away from his commitment to resign from his post in righteous indignation -- maybe not in 2011, or 2019, but certainly by 2023 at the very latest:
My anger about all this is justly infamous but has been badly misrepresented.  I do think that some things are worth getting angry about, and the misuse of the Barbarian Migrations and the End of the Roman Empire to fuel xenophobia and racism, and the way some modern authors pander to this, is one such.  However, to look at the origins of this ire and animus, I invite you to compare my engagement with Peter Heather’s work in Barbarian Migrations, and its tone, with Heather’s engagement – if you can call it that – with my work, and its tone, in Empires and Barbarians.  I never expect to be agreed with; I do expect basic academic courtesy to be reciprocated.  If people see fit to treat me intellectually as a second-class citizen, the gloves will come off.  That may stem from my own biography as (unlike so many) a first-generation academic not educated at the 'right' schools and universities, but there we are.  I will be leaving the profession within the next four years (well done, guys) so I have nothing to lose by not apologising for that.
Kulikowski might have gotten in a good dig, but Halsall will always be a true master of the art of Being Mad Online.

Round 23
THE SEA EAGLE
MAKING RUGBY LEAGUE GREAT AGAIN!!!
Tumblr media
Round 22 Recap
Manly Sea Eagles      32                      Defeated    Wests Tigers              12
Tumblr media
After going down to the Warriors last week in Auckland Manly returned to the Fortress and back on firm ground easily accounted for the Tigers in this fixture.   Manly dominated the early skirmishes but despite plenty of chances failed to convert. Eventually Manly finally opened the scoring after 20 minutes when late replacement (for Curtis Sironen), Jack Gosiewski crossed following a deft Cherry Baby grubber. Gosiewski continues the trend of unheralded/rookie Manly players that have thrived in season 2019 under the tutelage of master coach Hasler.
Tumblr media
Against the run of play the Tigers hit back and despite Manly’s dominance, somehow with only 5 minutes remaining in the half the scores were levelled.   Two late tries to Gosiewski and the NOT GUILTY Dylan Walker resulted in a 18-6 lead to Manly at the break, a score-line that more accurately reflected Manlys dominance. In the Sea Eagle’s opinion this was Walkers finest performance since returning from the erroneous 9-week no fault stand-down imposed on him by the NRL at the commencement of the season.   Manly continued to dominate the Tigers in the second half and eventually ran out 32-12 winners. With the for and against boost from this game and other results going their way Manly now find themselves in the top 4, a far cry from this time last year when they were challenging for the spoon.
Round 23   Manly Sea Eagles              18                   Defeated    Canberra Raiders            14
Tumblr media
Watching the pre-game analysis on Fox Sports the Sea Eagle was bemused by a question posed by host Lara Pitt to the panel (of experts) to the effect of “How does Des (Hasler) get Manly up for the game today?” Seriously, and bearing in mind that a top 4 spot was on the line, do these people actually get paid to make such insipid comments.   Befitting a game with so much at stake, the opening 20 minutes was a tight and tense affair. Played in front of a large and biased home crowd the Raiders with a glut of possession and penalties applied plenty of pressure but Manly’s defence held strong.
Tumblr media
The Raiders then appeared to have opened the scoring when Jack Wighton crossed, only to be denied by a desperate Cherry Baby strip. Minutes later however, the Raiders did finally score when Jarrod Croker breached some tired Manly goal-line defence. Manly had chances of their own, first when Dylan Walker was denied due to an obstruction and then some desperate defence from the Raiders thwarted an opportunity to Rueben Garrick.   With both sides acknowledging their opponents’ defensive capabilities penalty conversions firstly taken by the Raiders and then Manly (twice) resulted in a 8-4 lead to the home side at the break.   Signs were not good when Manly returned for the second half minus Moses Suli (ankle) and Joel Thompson (wrist fracture) and things did not improve when Horhay Torfua failed to defuse a bomb in the opening set and an ensuing penalty gifted the Raiders another easy 2 points.   With their backs to the wall, a length of the field intercept to try scoring freak, Rueben Garrick enhanced by a penalty for a late hit after scoring and with 20 minutes to go somehow Manly found themselves in front.   Proving that they were indeed up for the contest and despite the pre-game reservations of Ms Pitt, Manly continued to lift. A try to Jake Trbjovic extended their lead to 18-10 and with 10 minutes to go it looked like Manly were home. Unfortunately, the Raiders immediately hit back and the game was still up for grabs.   The Raiders then applied the blow torch to Manly and threw everything they had at them hoping to replicate last weeks come from behind win against the Filthy Storm. The Manly defence in the final minutes was nothing short of outstanding as they managed to repel the Raiders onslaught and hold on for a stirring victory.
Tumblr media
Next week its back to Brookie to take on the Filthy wrestling cheating rorters in what again is a must win game for Manly in their quest for a top 4 finish.
   THE PUNISHMENT MATRIX
Tumblr media
Obviously aware that Mad Monday festivities are fast approaching, it has been reported in the Sunday Telegraph that the NRL has released what has been termed a Punishment Matrix to address off-field atrocities. Whilst it is likely that the introduction of said matrix could be a season too late, the Matrix has the potential to make the Director of Controversies role largely redundant.   Rugby league never fails to deliver with its stupidity. This one looks like the brain explosion of an ex-politician, but that is merely conjecture at this stage.   In response, the Sea Eagle in conjunction with the Director of Controversy has developed his own Punishment Matrix.   Offense: Being unable to name the team that plays out of the Shire. Punishment: Breaking on the wheel
Tumblr media
Offense: Being unable to differentiate between a Newcastle Knights and Barcelona FC guernsey. Punishment: Waterboarding   Offense: Being intoxicated and abusive towards police in a foreign country (e.g. Singapore). Punishment: Six strokes with a cane rattan on the bare buttocks   Offense: Erroneously standing down a player under the no-fault policy who is not guilty. Punishment: The Judas Cradle
Tumblr media
Offense: Non-specific administrative embarrassment Punishment: Public stoning at NRL fixture at half time   The Sea Eagle is not sure what relevance former whiz kid Todd Carney has to the matrix given that he has not participated in the NRL for more than 5 years and had no (known) involvement in any of last season’s end of year indiscretions, but  he is no doubt pleased that there is life after football for Todd as the public face of the matrix.   The Sea Eagle is pleased for Todd who is now also an ambassador for the eponymous corporate bookie Sportsbet. His latest bubbler ads are the work of marketing genius.
Tumblr media
The placement of the article at the bottom of the page is also worth noting and contains what can only be described as quote of the year by a concerned mum to the effect of “My two-year-old loves that bubbler, I cannot fathom letting her use it now”. One can only imagine her outrage should she witness the one and only Todd the Bubbler doing what he does best.   Let’s face it, Todd is the gift that keeps giving and the Sea Eagle implores Todd and/or his management to immediately seek trademark over his image, likeness and brand. “The Bubbler ™”.   Fairly soon the Sea Eagle expects to see a range of French Bidet products under the Carney Bubbler brand. As the man on the fata aka Sam Kekovic says, you know it makes sense.
NATHAN BROWN
Tumblr media
This week we were met with the shock horror revelations that Newcastle coach Nathan Brown had decided to “move on” on what appeared to be a mutually agreed exit, 3 weeks out from the semis and with the Knights still in the hunt for a top 8 spot.
In the News Limited press around 20 August 2019 we received this quote from the coach “Brown said the time is right to move on. “My main job was to come here and put the Club back together,” Brown said. “It’s been a tough but enjoyable job. I’ve met lots of great people and I feel the club is far better off for me coming here. “The roster and salary cap issues have been resolved and there’s the potential of a team to have sustained success. “A lot of the heavy lifting has been done and now I’m leaving it to the next group of club leaders to continue the job. “But it’s important to remember the year is not over and I look forward to finishing the season off strongly and push for a final birth.”   Suffice it to say as the Knights pressed on for a finals berth in round 23 the Knights capitulated and were smashed 46 -4 by the West Tigers. Worse still, Brown was reported as suggesting earlier in the week that the winning of grand finals at the Knights was for someone else (it certainly was not his role).
Tumblr media
Given his record as a player in the NRL Premiership stakes (i.e. Nil) and his background with the woefully deficient St George Dragons of the 1990s and early 00s one must commend coach Brown on at least adopting the well documented philosophies of Dirty Harry “A man has got to know his limitations”.   The press is also reporting that ex-Saints player Jason Ryles is also in contention for a spot as coach of Newcastle in 2020. Ryles suffers virtually all of the same problems as coach Brown has, namely being an ex St George player who has never won anything as an NRL player or NRL head coach. And, who has a severe case of DFI. Do we dare to dream the Knights go with DFI infected Jason Ryles ? The Sea Eagle sincerely hope so (together of course with a new and well documented assistant coach al la Trent Barrett).   Let’s face it, head coaching positions at an NRL club are no place for a non-premiership winning, DFI infected ex Dragons. Manly have acknowledged this and have reaped the benefits in 2019. The lights have also come on at the Knights too (provided they don’t go with Ryles) and they can look forward to 2020 with optimism. That only leaves the Dragons, and surely Coach MacGregors days are number at this hapless rabble.

The Best Kind of Friends Chapter 4
Chat Noir finds himself falling for Alya, who loves Marinette, who is just confused. Relationship shenanigans ensue.
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | | Chapter 5 | Ao3
Chapter 4: Alya meddles and Adrien is disappointed.
“Hey Alya.”
Alya looked up from her phone to see Adrien standing in front of her desk, his posture failing to disguise his awkwardness. “Hey Sunshine, what’s up?”
He blushed. That was interesting. Was he finally noticing Marinette?
“Uh, nothing.” He grinned but his eyes were still nervous. “Just wanted to know, uh, what’s you’re up to lately?”
She laughed. “Not much. Just waiting for Marinette.”
He nodded. “Cool cool cool. Marinette is cool.”
She smile triumphantly. He was totally starting to notice Marinette. “She is. Cute too.” She winked.
His blush deepen. Ha. She had him.
He shrugged, trying to look nonchalant. “Y-yeah. Umm, are you doing anything later?”
“We were thinking of seeing a movie tonight, if you want to come along?” She suggested slyly.
His eyes brightened up. “Yeah! That’d be great.”
“Great. I’ll have Marinette text you the details.” And wouldn’t it be a surprise when Alya suddenly remembered things she had to do?
“Oh. Sounds great.” Adrien stood in a moment of uncomfortable silence, almost as if he wanted to say something else. Before she could ask him what was wrong, the teacher arrived and called the class to order.
Alya sighed as the teacher started speaking. Marinette was late, again. What was she going to do with that girl? She couldn’t help but smile fondly as she began to take careful notes.
She had long since stopped denying that she was in love with Marinette. It was pointless to deny when her heart nearly jumped out of her chest every time she even looked at her. She had fallen for her the moment she broke that macaron in half all the way back in college, and every day she fell further in love. She loved Marinette so much it hurt, but she wasn’t going to do anything about it.
Nino hadn’t understood. He thought her love for Marinette meant that she didn’t love about him. He didn’t understand why she didn’t just tell her how she felt. She couldn’t explain it and he couldn’t deal with that. One of the hardest things was telling Marinette why she and Nino had broken up without mentioning the real reason. Marinette had been angry at Nino for weeks, despite how many times Alya told her it had been mutual.
Marinette didn’t show up until halfway through the class. Alya had to suppress a laugh as she tried to sneak in without the teacher seeing. She was hopeless.
“Mlle. Dupain-Cheng.” The teacher said firmly, not even turning away from the blackboard. “You are late again.”
Marinette sighed and hung her head. “Sorry. I slept in again.”
The teacher sighed and shook her head. “Just. . . take your seat.”
Alya was grinning as Marinette sat down beside her. “You dork. I thought you said you were going to try to go to sleep at a reasonable time.” She elbowed her affectionately.
Marinette laughed tiredly. “Yeah, well, I tried to but I had a lot on my mind last night.”
“Oh?” Alya smiled slyly. “Anything to do with a certain blond that you’re going to the movies with tonight?”
“What?” It took a moment for understanding to dawn on Marinette’s face. “Alya, you didn’t!”
The teacher turned around and glared.
“You bet I did, babe.” Alya whispered after the teacher turned her attention back to the board. “You are going to text him the deets later.”
“How? How much did you have to harass him until he agreed?” Marinette asked, suspiciously.
“Not at all!” Alya held her hand over her chest in mock offense. “No, really. He actually asked if you were doing anything after school. I think all our hard work is starting to pay off.”
The smile that spread across Marinette’s lips reminded Alya very suddenly of the reason she was suppressing her feelings. Marinette was so happy at the thought of being with Adrien. Alya was going to do anything in her power to protect that happiness.
Alya couldn’t concentrate on her homework. Marinette hadn’t texted her yet. The movie should have ended 20 minutes ago. Where was her text? Maybe she was off making out with him right now? Maybe he insulted her and ran away and she was crying now? Oh, she was going to kill him. How dare he make Marinette cry!
She took a deep breath, calming herself before she got too carried away with her imagined scenario. Most likely they were just having a good time and she didn’t have a chance to text her yet.
But maybe she would send a text to check up on her. . .
Hey girl, how’d it go?
She put her phone down. She was going to focus on her work. Not on obsessing over Marinette again.
When the phone buzzed a moment later, she grabbed it without even thinking.
It went great! The movie was really good.
I am sure it was, but are you smooching?
lol, no. Hes going to walk me home though.
Alya smiled at her phone. She was so glad it went well. The ache in her chest was happiness. Definitely. She was so happy for Marinette. Her happiness was the most important thing.
She ignored the voice that said she sounded like she was convincing herself and typed in her response.
Ohhhhh! Get a smooch girl!
Haha, not likely. You are more likely to get a smooch from what you’ve said. Kiss the cat!
Alya rolled her eyes. Marinette thought it was so amusing that she had been hanging out with Chat Noir. She also was insistent that Alya had a crush on him. Which. . . might not be false.
Lol I don’t even know if he is visiting tonight. He usually comes around now if he is going to.
I am sure he wouldn’t be able to stay away from your hotness.
Alya’s heart pounded in her chest. It was always so hard when she said things like that.
Whatever. Focus on getting your own smooch, not my potential one!
Yes ma’am.
Alya leaned back in her chair, frowning. Why did she do this to herself? She wanted Marinette to be happy, even if it wasn’t with her, but did she have to torture herself like this? It was so hard to always be talking about romance but not being able to mention the name at the forefront of her mind.
A visit from Chat Noir would be welcome right now. At least she could take her mind of Marinette for a little bit. The way he pined after Ladybug was almost as bad as the way she pined after Marinette. But he probably had a better chance with her.
Alya was pretty sure Marinette was bi, like she was. They had never exactly talked about it but Marinette made some comments. She was definitely not straight. Or maybe that was just wishful thinking? Besides, even if their sexualities matched up, that didn’t mean that she actually had any chance with her. She was so into Adrien. Alya didn’t feel jealous of that, exactly, at least not in the way most people seemed to feel jealous. She didn’t mind Marinette’s love for Adrien, she just also wanted to be loved by Marinette. She could smooch Adrien all she wanted, as long as she smooched her too. She didn’t know why that was so hard for some people to understand.
She sighed, giving up on her work for now. The homework would have to wait. She needed to clear her head. Flopping down on her bed, she scrolled mindlessly through her social media feed on her phone. She was barely paying attention to it, but it was enough to keep her mind off of her hopeless love life.
A tap on her window caused her to look up from her internet daze. Chat grinned at her through the glass and her heart gave a little jolt.
“I thought you weren’t coming tonight,” she said, giving him her trademark wide smile. “You usually come earlier.”
He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly as he sat on her bed. “Sorry about that. I was out at the movies with a friend.”
Alya blinked. Somehow she never really thought much about Chat’s regular life and friends, except for the fact that he apparently didn’t get along with his father. “Nice! That sounds fun.”
Surprisingly, Chat sighed. “Yeah, it was great.” He didn’t sound terribly enthusiastic.
“Was it?” Alya raised an eyebrow.
“It really was!” he insisted. “It’s just that another friend was supposed to come and she couldn’t make it. The friend I was with was great, and I had a great time with her, but I was really looking forward to spending some time with the other friend.”  He shrugged, looking down guiltily.
Interesting. “Is the friend who didn’t show someone you have a crush on?” Talking about someone else’s love problems was really just what she needed right then.
“No!” He held his hands up defensively and then slumped. “Okay, maybe.” He sighed. “Is it weird to like Ladybug and also this other girl?”
“Dude, not at all.” She put a reassuring arm around him. “I have like, so many crushes at the same time, it is ridiculous. Like, you can like this other girl and still like Ladybug, totally.”
He smiled, seeming relieved. “Really?”
She laughed. “Yeah, like I can totally like someone else and still want to give you a giant smooch if you wanted me to.”
He stiffened and she worried that she had gone too far. It was true, but she was mainly just teasing him.
“You’d kiss me?” he asked hesitantly.
“In a hot second if you wanted me to.” She laughed, trying to ignore the way her heart beat quicken. As she actually imagined kissing him, she wasn’t so sure that her teasing was a good idea.
He shifted awkwardly. “Uh, it’s pretty late. I have some stuff to do pretty early tomorrow. I should go.”
“Oh.” Alya frowned. Dammit, she had really messed up. She thought he would be okay with that sort of joking. Maybe it hit too close for him too.
“Yeah.” He sounded nervous. “See you tomorrow, maybe?”
“Yeah.”
He hugged her and all she could focus on was his hot breath on her cheek. Damn, she wanted to kiss him so bad.
After what seemed like an eternity, he let her go.
“See you.” He waved and was gone, out the window and into the night.
She lay back, lamenting her ability to mess up all of her relationships.

7 moments we’ll remember most from the Brady-Belichick era
Tumblr media
What will you remember most about the seemingly never-ending Patriots dynasty?
For nearly 20 years, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick had the NFL pinned down like a grade school bully. On Tuesday, that era ended when Brady announced he would not be going back to the Patriots, likely so he could start fresh with Tampa Bay at 42 years old.
Though neither Brady nor Belichick are retiring yet (and may not for a while), their careers have been defined by the other as much as by their own selves. So as they go their separate ways, now is a perfect time to revisit one of the most dominant, brilliant, occasionally obnoxious and seemingly never-ending dynasties in American sports history.
Here are just a few moments that members of SB Nation staff will remember the most from the Brady-Belichick partnership. You probably won’t be surprised to see we have a wide range of memories. Feel free to give us your own — the good, the bad, the stupid, ALL OF IT — because there is a lot to choose from.
When he replaced Drew Bledsoe
I was a Michigan fan as a kid, which means I was hip to Brady’s moxie, poise, chutzpah and grit before it was cool (indeed, I was hip to it even when Michigan fans refused to be). I was 13 when I watched him replace an injured Drew Bledsoe on a Sunday evening early in the 2001 season. I ran and told my dad what was happening. As Brady eventually led the Pats to the playoffs, I felt immense validation at having been in from the very beginning on one of the greatest sports underdog stories ever.
Then the Patriots wouldn’t stop winning, Brady grew more alien, and I no longer wanted to call myself a fan. Though it seems distant now, it’s worth remembering that there was a time when Brady was universally beloved.
— Louis Bien
When he made John Madden look stupid and started a dynasty
The Patriots were 14-point underdogs in Super Bowl XXXVI. It made sense. New England was rolling a backup quarterback who nickel-and-dimed his offense to the top of the AFC against The Greatest Show on Turf Rams. His low-wattage passing attack was a cavalry, and Kurt Warner’s offense was nothing but tanks.
I was 17 when this game happened, filled with optimism despite growing up with a Pats team whose only motivation to climb out of the AFC East basement was to get pelted with rocks over and over again in the playoffs. A small group of us watched this game from a friend’s basement — the furnished chunk of a split-level ranch. It was middle-school teacher nice; pool table, bar we weren’t allowed to touch, 32 inches of pure RGB beauty broadcasting the game from New Orleans. Paradise, really.
And it felt that way when New England raced out to a 17-3 third-quarter lead, even if we knew it wouldn’t last. St. Louis unsurprisingly came back to tie the game late in the fourth quarter. Brady got the ball back with 81 seconds left, then dropped back to pass despite John Madden’s protests; he wanted the Pats to play for overtime against a scorching-hot Rams’ offense that had just mounted a 21-second touchdown drive.
“With no time outs I think the Patriots, with this field position, you just have to run the clock out,” Madden opined from the broadcast booth. “You have to play for overtime now. You don’t want to force anything here. You don’t want to do anything stupid.”
Brady did no such thing. Like he had against the Raiders in Foxborough three weeks before, the young quarterback calmly dropped back and sliced up the St. Louis defense with a thousand small cuts. Five yards here. Six yards there. A 23-yard sideline strike to Troy Brown, who deserves so much more recognition than he actually gets. Madden’s tone changed:
“I kinda like what the Patriots are doing ... This is amazing. This is something, I’ll admit, I don’t think they should have done. But they had the guts, they have the quarterback, and they did it.”
Then, finally, the moment:
We exploded from our spots on the edge of the floral-upholstered couches. Cool ranch flecks flew from our hands and into the atmosphere. My buddy Matt grabbed me and we collapsed, screaming, into a delirious hug on the floor. Sports had never made me feel that way before. Everything was a dumb, sloppy mess, and it was amazing.
“That’s the way you should win a Super Bowl,” concluded Madden, appropriately convinced of just how damn wrong he was about Brady.

When he grew his hair long
What was happening there? Look, Brady is an objectively handsome man. That long hair nonsense that happened in 2011 was just such a bad look. Please don’t do this again. Oh, and remember when he dropped that pass in Super Bowl LII against the Eagles? That was fun.

The tuck rule
It’s not mature nor proper to blame a loss on a bad call. There are dozens of things that happen through the course of a game that affect the outcome. For instance, the Raiders were much too conservative during the fourth quarter of their 2002 Divisional Round matchup against the Patriots in snowy Foxborough.
But that game will always be remembered for that pivotal moment. In the final two minutes, Brady fumbled the ball, but the call was overturned because of a rule that said that even if a quarterback loses control when in the process of tucking the ball back into his body, it’s an incomplete pass.

This was a fumble. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.
It was a fumble, a turnover that would have ended the game, allowing the Raiders to move on while cementing Charles Woodson as a national hero. I’d like to think that loss for New England would have nipped the Patriots’ dynasty in the bud, but years of intense therapy (and a dash of common sense) led me to believe otherwise. But it’s still fun to believe the Patriots are built on a foundation of lies.

Brady and Moss against the Dolphins
As a Patriots fan, I could have chosen a number of different plays and moments from that glorious 2007 season, but two moments that still delight me took place against the Dolphins in Week 7. The Dolphins were 0-6 at the time, and the Patriots were in the midst of an undefeated season. On the first possession of the game, Brady found Donté Stallworth for a touchdown, and from then on it was obvious that the Dolphins were in for a long day.
But the big story of the offense that season was the connection between Brady and Randy Moss. Not only was Moss playing well after leaving Oakland, he looked even better than he did in his Minnesota days. He was doing ungodly things to defensive backs. Brady would finish the season with a record 50 touchdowns, of which Moss caught 23. I couldn’t wait to see what the two would do against Miami.
It only took until the beginning of the second quarter for them to connect in the end zone, and it was glorious. From the Dolphins’ 35-yard line, Brady launched the ball deep after a play-action fake. When the ball came down, Moss was just past the goal line. The ball was slightly under-thrown, but no worries. Moss stopped his run and jumped over two defenders to catch the ball for a touchdown.
youtube
That play was an archetypal display of Brady and Moss’s unstoppability. Even when the ball was less than perfect, and two defenders were in position to stop the play, Moss erased the disadvantage.
A few minutes later, the same thing happened again. Brady launched the ball deep, this time from even farther out, and found Moss in the end zone blanketed by two defenders. Again, Moss caught it. He landed on his feet and the two defenders fell to the ground. Then he simply handed the ball over to the referees, because the play was just business as usual.
It encapsulated the feeling of that season: excellence as routine. And there was nothing anyone could do to stop it. It’s too bad the Super Bowl was cancelled that season due to the weather or something like that.

Brady and Belichick’s mutual friend
A story in four parts:
1.
Tumblr media
Via YouTube
2.
Congratulations to Tom Brady on yet another great victory- Tom is my friend and a total winner!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 3, 2015
3.
Belichick wrote Donald Trump a letter the week of the 2016 general election, which Trump read at a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire, the night before the polls opened. Belichick confirmed that it read:
Congratulations on a tremendous campaign. You have dealt with an unbelievable slanted and negative media, and have come out beautifully — beautifully. You’ve proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter. Your leadership is amazing. I have always had tremendous respect for you, but the toughness and perseverance you have displayed over the past year is remarkable. Hopefully tomorrow’s election results will give the opportunity to make America great again. Best wishes for great results tomorrow.
Bill

“Donald is a good friend of mine,” Brady told WEEI in December 2015. “I have known him for a long time. I support all my friends. That is what I have to say. He’s a good friend of mine. He’s always been so supportive of me — for the last 15 years, since I judged a beauty pageant for him, which was one of the very first things that I did that thought was really cool. That came along with winning the Super Bowl. He’s always invited me to play golf. I’ve always enjoyed his company.
“I support all my friends in everything they do. I think it’s pretty remarkable what he’s achieved in his life. You’re going from business, kind of an incredible business man and then a TV star, and then getting into politics. It’s a pretty different career path. I think that is pretty remarkable.”
— Natalie Weiner
Never forget that his last pass with the Patriots was a pick-six
Brady didn’t have much of a choice but to take a chance. The Patriots were trailing the Titans by one point with only 15 seconds on the clock, starting a last-gasp drive at their own 1-yard line.
So he dropped back into his own end zone and tried to quickly get the ball to Mohamed Sanu for a first down. Instead, he threw a pick to ex-Patriots cornerback Logan Ryan, who jogged in for the touchdown to send his former team out with an early playoff exit:

At the time, we knew it *could* be the last throw Brady ever made in a Patriots uniform. But most of us didn’t think it would really happen. Would the six-time Super Bowl champion, the greatest quarterback in NFL history, the man partially responsible for the most dominant dynasty most of us have ever seen in this league really end his career in New England with a pick-six?
As it turns out: yes.
Now that I think about it, it’s kind of fitting that, of all quarterbacks, he’s replacing Jameis Winston, whose Bucs career started and ended with a pick-six.

Story You May Have Missed
Crawford High football team coach jacked up
Go smash face
Tumblr media
Late August: On this muggy morning, the air hangs thick under a gray, un-comforting sky. In a small hollow among small hills m East San Diego, several-score teenage boys and a few men gather at Colts Field, home to Crawford High School’s football team, for two-a-days, practice sessions held every weekday morning and afternoon in the last few weeks before school starts.
Tumblr media
A handful of spectators, including some boys too young to be in high school and two teenage girls with babies in strollers, dot the rickety bleachers on the field’s south side and observe the practice as quietly as if they were watching lawn bowling. Their passive demeanor belies the barely contained mayhem erupting a few yards away.
"RUN! RUN! I NEED SOME HELP! LET'S HUSTLE, GENTLEMEN!" Echoing off the banks of ice plant, across the field into the bleachers, comes the screechy, house-on-fire voice of one of the men. "MAN TO MAN! PICK ONE MAN AND STAY WITH HIM!" The field is loosely divvied up, each sector occupied by a different squad — varsity in red jerseys and junior varsity in blue — each running a different set of drills. The loudest exhortations come from the area where players are being run through intrasquad scrimmages — rehearsals of offensive and defensive plays. The offensive squad tries various pass patterns and running plays, and the defense tries to read them and react.
The piercing voice belongs to the defensive coordinator for the junior varsity. He screams at his players almost nonstop, not angrily, but just because everything on the field is at a level where adrenalin counts more than words. His own intensity would no doubt consume his lean frame if it weren't allowed to escape in this way. "HEY. WAY TO WRESTLE IM TO THE GROUND OVER THERE! HEY. WAY TO HOLD ON. MAN!" The players are learning the particulars of the game, to be sure, but they are also being initiated into a rock-hard world where muscle and animal urgency mean the difference between prevailing and submitting, between elation and despair. "HARD HARD! HARDHARD HARDHARDHARDHARD, COME ON. GO!"
Tumblr media
"GO BALLS OUT! COME ON. GET ANGRY!"
The offense tries a run. The ball earner slips a tackle and picks up speed on his way down the side of the field. Short, powerfully built, he swivels his hips as he easily shifts his weight to change course and elude more pursuers. Finally one defender draws a bead on him. The bodies fly at each other in the open field and meet with a trebly, plastic thwaack that echoes through the neighborhood. A herd suddenly thunders up; other bodies soar into the heap; pads helmets arms cleats, a rapid succession of muffled thwaacks, a crowd of unhhs, grass and dirt spraying over the pile, a momentary stillness and quiet, during which the sounds from other squads can be heard.
"NICE TACKLE!" The coach exchanges a few hand slaps as the bodies untangle.
"WAY TO GO, DEFENSE! GOOD JOB, D! HELLUVA JOB ... DEFENSE. YOU GUYS ARE DOIN' A HECK OF A JOB OUT HERE! GETTIN' BURNED A LITTLE BIT, BUT YOU'RE PLAYIN' SOME BALL!"
But the offense is playin' some ball too. A pass: The receiver streaks down the sideline The ball is underthrown. The receiver holds up, leaps a little into the air. The defender dives to knock the ball away. The receiver snatches it, spins, and prances the few steps into the end zone. He slows and turns around and jogs back. His smile visible the length of the field, he says simply, "Touch... down." They are the words of a victorious man. but they are uttered in the gentle, high-pitched voice of a boy.
On a run up the middle, one ball carrier is about to break free, when from the mass of thwaackmg bodies rises a pair of hands. They reach for him from behind, grasp him by the neck, and snap him backwards to the ground. He does not get up at once. He does rise after a few minutes, while the tackier is made to do 20 push-ups as penance.
The scrimmages wind down. All players now race through punishing drills designed to forge their bodies and reprogram then: reflexes. Several groups are made to run repeated 40-yard sprints, nearly halfway up V the field, full-out, to a specified yard line, then wheel and sprint back. If any one of them gives less than his all or stops short of (or overruns) the line, it doesn't count. The first sprints are run with spirit; the players shoot by. By the fourth or fifth circuit, there is little air in those lungs and the coaches must provide the motivation.
"SOMEBODY'S NOT RUNNING! YOU'RE GONNA COST THIS GROUP 20 SPRINTS!"
A little more effort on the next sprint. By the tenth time around, there is no more horsepower to be gotten out of their straining muscles. "THAT ONE DIDN'T COUNT!" A player lets out. "Shit."
The head coach alerts an assistant. "COACH. IF ONE GUY DOESN'T GO A MILLION MILES AN HOUR. IT DOESN'T COUNT." (Coaches address each other as "Coach,” the mutual recognition of a priestly order, as one senator might call another "Senator.”) The assistant replies quietly, as if receiving a sacrament — "Got it." The sprinters grunt, and cry out, and stagger, and sprint some more.
Finally, the practice ends. As the coaches offer a few last pointers and reminders — which may or may not be heard — the players collapse on the grass and strip their helmets, jersey, cleats, shoulder pads. Their faces are sweaty. Their uniforms are bruised with grass stains and caked with mud. Their breathing is heavy — almost desperate. Eventually, one by one. they find their feet and begin to file across the street to the gym, where they will dress and head home for lunch They will do it all over in a few hours and again tomorrow morning.
"To tell you the truth, I’d sell my soul to be able to go through it again. I still miss playing." Dan Armstrong is not kidding. He loves football, and it is an informed love. Now 36. Armstrong played fullback and linebacker at Kearny High School, Mesa Junior College, and San Diego State and has coached high school teams in San Diego and in Akron, Ohio, for a total of 11 years. He has coached at Crawford for the past 7 years, as head coach since last year He leans his chair back in the coaches' office, just off the locker room in the Crawford gym. In his tank top and gym shorts, he looks the part of a lifelong jock. His broad shoulders and powerful legs, though softening a little, clearly belong to someone who has spent many years in rigorous training. He carries himself with an easy, confident gait, sits relaxed, alert, and is content now to wax philosophical about this head-banging game. This is a man in his element.
What is it about this game that engages him so deeply? He smiles, his warmth and openness contrasting sharply with the roughneck tone of his sport. "Probably the controlled violence. It's a physical game, and there’s a lot of hard contact, hard hitting. But there's also a lot of strategy involved. It's very stimulating to sit down and scout somebody and break down film" — Armstrong and his colleagues spend every Sunday reviewing game films of upcoming opponents — "and try to find a weakness and exploit it." And then there is the aesthetics of pure athleticism "You can see some kid go down the field'and jump above everybody and catch a ball, and it’s like watching Baryshnikov When we're out there, and we see stuff like that." he adds, laughing, "we say, 'Great coaching.' "
For Armstrong, there are three indelible things football gives its devotees. "First of all. you establish lifelong friendships that you never forget. My high school football buddies are still my best friends. When you go through what these kids go through and what we went through, day after day with these guys, it's like going through the service together. And you form bonds that'll never be broken. Second of all. you learn the team concept and how to work together with a group of guys for one common goal. And thirdly, you learn that you get out of life what you put into it. If you absolutely refuse to lose, that only leaves one option. you have to win. But if you do lose, and you don't learn something from it, then you've lost twice."
Because it is played in a fever of teeth-grinding ferocity from start to finish, football can be seen as a fundamentally more emotional — Armstrong calls it "inspirational" — game than most. It both requires and produces a mindset that can only be called Fired Up. The player succeeds to the extent that he is aroused beyond himself, beyond his normal state of consciousness. "That's what they always say about guys who ‘play over their heads,' " Armstrong agrees. "That's because they get so pumped up. And that's what we try and do. We believe that if we are more inspired and more fired up, we're gonna win more ball games."
The largest part of the coach’s job is generating that arousal in his charges. In Armstrong's case, it often means providing motivation where none exists in a player's life; some Crawford students, he says, come from single-parent homes and are often unsupervised or otherwise left with little to deflect the temptation to hang out with local gangs. And for some of these same students, Armstrong says, football represents the only genuine chance to escape a life full of dead ends, the only potential ticket to a college education and a prayer of earning a decent living, in or out of sports.
In 1986, UCSD student Lorimel Arabe studied Crawford football players and their counterparts at University High School and found the predominantly white and more affluent University team less intent on football as a long-term career or short-term means of getting an education than was the Crawford team. So while Armstrong and his fellow coaches may have to spend a good part of their time cajoling players to keep up their grades or attendance, once the players are on the field and getting positive reinforcement for their efforts, they take to it with an abandon suggesting they have found a productive outlet for the violent urges experienced daily on the streets of the inner city.
Armstrong doesn’t shrink from this; in fact, it fits nicely into his program — he wants his players to go all-out. Asked whether this doesn't encourage injuries, he answers that the opposite is true: "When you get hurt is when you don't go all-out. You get someone going half-speed and someone going full-speed, and someone gets hurt." Beyond that, the team has, and wants to maintain, a reputation for being a "pretty physical football team." Eavesdropping offensive line coach Roger Engle nods approvingly. "We feel like we gotta out-hit a team to beat 'em."
Crawford's streetwise players take to this approach, continues Armstrong. "When you get a tough kid like that, it's easy to preach that mentality to 'im and get that pride developed that says, 'Hey, I'm gonna knock someone’s head off. and I’m gonna physically intimidate people.' I tell these guys something they can relate to. I say. ‘It's a goddang war with rules. It's a street fight with rules.’ " As the summer practices began, the coaches were frankly disappointed that the workouts weren't physical enough, but by this afternoon, "there were some big-league collisions and guys likin' it. We always kid 'em, we tell 'em, ‘If you're not half-dinged with snot runnin’ down your nose, you're not hitting anybody.' They like that, and they joke around; they'll get up and do this” — he wipes his nose on an imaginary sleeve with an exaggerated motion — "and see if there’s any snot running out of their noses. They're a good group of kids."
What they get for throwing themselves so wholeheartedly into the fray — for managing to. as Armstrong exhorts them to before every game, "go out and fly around and knock some butt out there" — is the evanescent joy of winning, of having prevailed, of being recognized by the tribe as an alpha male. Armstrong has been at both extremes, both as player and coach. "Winning is the greatest feeling in the world And so consequently, when you lose that one on the last second ... I mean, I’ve gotten sick to my stomach after a loss." But oh, those wins. The thrill never pales. "Probably the closest feeling you can get to it is when you have a kid. You actually think to yourself, 'It doesn't get any better than this. I'm as happy as I can be.' "
Late September: The Colts are preparing for their third game. They will play the Sweetwater High Red Devils at Sweetwater, having lost the opener to Patrick Henry High, 14-12, and won the second game, against Madison. 5-0 (a score more likely in a baseball game; "We pitched a six-hitter," jokes Armstrong).
In the cramped team room, under a sign that says "Dedication," eleven players are in various stages of dress. They don most of their uniforms here but carry the shoulder pads and jerseys with them on the bus to the site of the game and finish dressing minutes before taking the field. So a dozen or so shoulder pad sets, wearing their respective jerseys, now sit on the cement floor, like headless behemoths buried up to their chests, the jersey numbers half-visible. A player takes some aspirin, perhaps in anticipation of the pounding he will shortly receive.
The coaches enter for a few words before boarding the bus. Jeff Olivero, the defensive coordinator, speaks first. "All week long I been hearin' about ‘They got 11 guys comin' back,' " he begins, referring to Sweetwater's many returning seniors. Crawford's young team could be intimidated by this. "So what? They also got a quarterback who averages 232 yards a game — but he ain't gonna if we put pressure on him." He goes over a few defensive configurations and specific assignments and urges the team to “fly around and have fun out there."
Coach Armstrong has the last word. His voice starts out loud and gets even louder. "We been slidin' on offense," he admonishes the silent team. "There’ve been times when it seemed the best we could do was tie 0-0. But I'll tell you what. I know that no team in the county can go around us." The Colts' strength this year has been defense, and he wants them to maintain their stinginess with opponents while revving up their offense. Sweetwater has lost its first two games; tonight’s game is a perfect opportunity, he says, for Crawford to assert itself and all aspects of its game. And he doesn't want to have to tell the team twice. "We're not gonna have a half-time talk about smash-face football. We're gonna come out, we’re gonna stomp the shit out of 'em from the opening whistle. This is their back yard, and it's a pivotal game for us. Awright, let's go down and have a good game and knock the snot out of 'em. Any questions?"
"NO, COACH!"
Above the concrete bleacher stands on the home-team side of Sweetwater's stadium is a modest press box. Mounted above the press box is an aging .wooden sign. It depicts an endless chain of autos riding into infinity. Flanking the cars are the legends "National City Mile of Cars... is RED DEVIL COUNTRY." Added below, for good measure, is another legend, offering the simple, hyperactive ejaculation, "RED DEVILS!"
The Devils and Colts each take half the field for pregame calisthenics. Stretching. Jumping jacks Pivots. Players call and respond across the field, everyone gradually turning up his own and his teammates’ internal amps. Eventually, a few taunts cross the invisible border between the two teams. The Red Devils look big and sound mean, their voices low and gruff compared to the Colts'. "Num-buh 56, you a cry-baby!" shouts someone from Sweetwater. Before anyone from Crawford can reply. Armstrong forbids it: "Let those pads do the talking."
Calisthenics finished, the team runs through drills The defensive line's chore is to drop flat, bounce up, and wiggle forward. Their coach is Dave Grissom, and his voice is right on top of them. "GET THROUGH GET THROUGH GET THROUGH! COME ON, HIT 'IM! HIT 'IM! I LOVE THIS PART!"
The offense runs a pass play. Vernon Shaver, Crawford's talented, heavily recruited wide receiver, glides along in a graceful stride, easily adjusting his gait to catch a ball thrown over his shoulder.
The Colts gather in the end zone just before the coin toss. Already, they are breathing heavily and wiping then brows on their jersey tails. Armstrong reviews the toss choices with the captains who will attend the coin toss, then has a few last admonitions for his Colts. "Remember these guys — we scrimmaged them last year — they’re cheap-shot artists. I don't wanna see you guys fightin' these guys. I will not tolerate it, it’s not joart of our program." The players nod compliantly. Fight? Us? Armstrong continues. "Were in their back yard. What does a dog do in your back yard?"
"SHIT!" yell the players. "Yeah.” a few voices add. "that's what we're gonna do, we're gonna shit in their back yard!"
"When a team comes out and does jumping jacks in my face," says Armstrong, "that pisses me off!"
"YEAH!"
"Awright. We’re gonna come out from the opemng gun and smash then face. If we hit 'em hard from the first drive, you just watch them hang their heads."
"YEAH!"
From here the playing field looks so wide, so long, and — worse — so flat, with nowhere to hide.
Crawford kicks off, and Sweetwater begins its first drive from its own 30-yard line. Two quick runs take the Red Devils to midfield. Then the earth opens under the Colts as a Sweetwater running back breaks free and romps into the end zone. Barely a minute has elapsed. The Crawford team and coaches are thunderstruck.
Redemption: The play is called back as Sweetwater is penalized for holding. The reprieve enlivens the entire Crawford sideline. Olivero screams, "PLAY THE FOOTBALL!” Grissom merely yells, "Loosen up! Loosen up!”
Sweetwater's offense stalls, gaining little. They punt and Crawford begins a long, grinding drive from its own 10-yard line. More than a dozen plays later — most of them head-down, ram-the-wall runs — Crawford is deep inside Sweetwater's territory. Colt running back Peter Ervin takes the ball at the 30 and is barely brought down by the last Sweetwater defender at the 7. He slams his fist into the ground. He gets up to try it again. This time he's tackled behind the line of scrimmage, and a Sweetwater player soars onto the pile after the whistle has blown, driving his helmet between Ervin’s shoulder blades. Ervin lies breathless.
The officials whistle the penalty, and flags fly, but Armstrong races to the pile-up and begins berating the officials. The umpire will have none of it. "You come out here and take care of your injured man," he tells Armstrong, "but don't bad-mouth the officials or I'm gonna tag you. That’s half the distance to the goal on them, but five yards on you.”
If Armstrong is called for unsportsmanlike conduct, it will cost his team more, at this position on the field, than Sweetwater's late-hit violation. But clearly the penalties are not the issue. Armstrong has prohibited his players from retaliating against cheap shots, but he must back that up by defending them himself And he, no less than his players, must assert his claim to the entire expanse of contested territory — physical and psychological .
Crawford now has the ball a yard and a half from the end zone. A running play nets nothing. Armstrong calls time out, sprints onto the field, and joins the huddle. When play resumes, Ervin roars over the line for a touchdown. The sparse Crawford crowd, studded with parents and teachers in blue Colts jackets, erupts A successful point-after kick makes it 7-0. The air is thick with adrenalin.
The rest of the first half proceeds sloppily and uneventfully Sweetwater nearly returns a kick for a touchdown. Its beefy fullback at first seems unstoppable, but the offense can't get any momentum going Shaver fumbles a punt, and Sweetwater recovers but cannot capitalize. Crawford recovers a fumble only to throw an interception. This is not precision football. But the air is thick with adrenalin.
Halftime. Both teams leave the field through a single gate On their way to the gym, a few opposing players exchange curses. The Crawford coaches hustle their team away.
What do coaches tell their teams at half-time? About what you'd expect As the players sprawl on the floor and benches for some rest, Armstrong hammers at them, "We gotta go out there and put together the same kinda drive we scored on! We gotta go up 14-0! We can't let them think they’re back in the game.
"We're not fooling anybody lining up," he continues, his voice softening for a moment. "Get your butts up! We gotta get off the ball! Come on, guys." his voice rising, "we said we gotta get better from week to week! On kickoff teams" — getting sterner — "we don't have 11 guys wanna fly downfield. We've got 4 or 5 guys flyin’, and 4 or 5 guys sayin', ‘I hope those guys in front of me make the tackle.' Lemme tell ya. that happens again, we're gonna make wholesale replacements!”
Olivero chimes in, "DO WE WANNA PLAY HARD-NOSE FOOTBALL?"
"YEAH!"
The players have a few minutes to relax. Most use it to keep hyping up themselves and each other. "Know what?" lineman-linebacker Jorge Brathwaite asks of no one in particular. “They (Sweetwater) told me the game ain't over yet — and it ain't over! We ain't scored yet! We gotta get fired up!"
"YEAH!"
Before they leave the locker room, Armstrong has one last admonition. "Awright, let's show some maturity out there — let’s ice somebody!"
"YEAH!"
The Colts do just what Armstrong wants. They score to open the second half, covering nearly 70 yards in a drive capped by a long pass to Shaver. Ervin bulls across again, from close in, for the touchdown. 14-0. Sweetwater fumbles on its next possession, and Crawford recovers; a few plays later and another obstinant run by Ervin and it's 21-0. The Crawford side of the field is happily riotous.
But the game’s physical toll is becoming evident. Legs are cramping up. Guys are "flyin' around" out there, but some are making crash landings. On one running play. Colt tailback Richie McClees is tackled at the sideline and spun backwards off his feet, his head slamming to the ground as he slides on his back. Mike Hwozdek, a short, quiet guy built like a brick wall, is looking for another helmet; his is broken.
Crawford pours it on. Sweetwater grows desperate and attempts a long sideline pass. Colt cornerback James Hester reads it perfectly, keeps himself between the ball and the intended receiver, then flings himself through the air and comes down with the interception. right in front of his jubilant teammates. He walks to the bench to catch his breath. "I saw it was overthrown, and he didn’t," he gasps.
Meanwhile Crawford is driving. Quarterback Chris Townsend scrambles and hits tight end Allah Hillie, one of Crawford’s few big players, with a pass Hillie turns into a long gain. In the space of three plays. Crawford has two touchdowns called back for penalties. The first time. Brathwaite is called for illegal motion. In the exultant atmosphere, it barely matters. "Jorge is trying to keep it even," Armstrong jokes. They settle for a field goal. 24-0.
The coaches are not interested in letting up.
"GET TO THE QUARTERBACK!" they yell at their defense. "YA GOTTA BE READY TO GO! SUCK IT UP!" It works: Crawford sacks the Sweetwater quarterback on three successive plays for losses totaling 30 yards. The Colts dominate the field. The game ends without further scoring.
The coaches are the last to board the bus. The team is ready to tear the roof off. Armstrong quiets them long enough to say, “On behalf of the coaching staff. I'd just like to thank you guys for one helluva effort." The players roar in self-congratulation. On the way back to Crawford, they hoot out the windows, slap each other, joke and holler and sing. Brathwaite stands in the aisle and swings a pom-pom he has gotten from somewhere. "Jorge is kind of our spiritual leader," says Armstrong. "Reverend Jorge?" he is asked. "Yeah — the Rev," he laughs, finally starting to fully enjoy himself. He turns and quiets the team once more. "Hey, Jorge, you got a new nickname: Reverend Jorge — The Rev!" Deafening cheers.
As the bus turns down the street leading into the parking lot behind the Crawford gym, a single player prompts his confederates with "One! Two! You know what to do!" With that, they burst into the school’s alma mater, the credo of all Crawford Colts, the undying pledge of fealty to all that is Crawfordian:
   All hail. Crawford High School
   Crimson, white and blue
   Loyalty and honor
We will pledge to you — FOREVER!
   Our banners always waving
   Crowned with victory
   All hail. Crawford High School
We will be true to thee
These guys sing it as if their lives depended on it.
Before the team files off the bus, Armstrong wants just one more moment with his players. "I just wanna say, go home, get some rest, enjoy your weekend, stay outta trouble, and Monday we go back to work."
"YEAH!"
Late October. Crawford has won its next three games, two by scores of 29-0 and 36-0. They have won five straight. Their defense has remained strong, and the offense has improved — in the parlance of the game, "gotten untracked.'" They now prepare for their homecoming game against St. Augustine High, to be played at Patrick Henry High.
The Crawford campus is clean and tidy and received a fresh coat of paint a couple of years ago, so its institutional plainness is mitigated somewhat by an undeniable cheeriness. Sandwich boards in pathways and courtyards and the senior quad are emblazoned with inspirational mottoes: Your Thoughts Today Become Your Tomorrow. Organize for Success. I Am a Success. I Deserve the Best.
Whether because of or in spite of these signs and other official entreaties, the student body files into the gym for the lunchtime pep rally. Much of the student body, anyway. Twenty years ago, Crawford had more than 3000 students, all but a handful from middle-class white families. Today, the school serves roughly 1500 students, about one-third of whom are Indochinese. There are about as many-black and almost as many white students, and a few Hispanic, South Pacific, and other minorities. Blacks and whites remain keen on football, but the Indochinese students evince little interest in the sport.
Still, the rally is well attended. But the program comes off as perfunctory. (Maybe the ritual is wearing thin.) Conducted essentially by cheerleaders and emceed by one whose words were not made more lucid by the PA. system, the rally is a short course in why and how to root for the home team. First, the assembly sings the alma mater, the words to which are painted on a large wooden sign high on the east wall. Many of the girls form a kind of V-for-victory salute with their right hands and slowly wave then: arms back and forth while singing. (This may help propagate the supernatural mystery of homecoming, for it too has no apparent meaning.) Next come a succession of cheerleader chants, formations, exercises, incantations. A cheerleader displays a handkerchief, or sock, urging all to wave same during the game. "Our goal is for everyone to have ’em so we can wave 'em and really impress whoever we're playing."
Finally, the rally climaxes with the introduction of the homecoming court — the underclass representatives and the senior couples who are candidates for homecoming queen and king. These students are preceded by two faculty couples, who take the floor arm-in-arm to raucous hoots and cheers, the mock sexuality of their momentary companionship apparently too much for the easily aroused audience. The couples all enter through a makeshift portal, festooned with sequins and the legend "Crawford Colts." The seniors rotate to different parts of the floor so all can get a good look at them. Of the four eligible couples, three of the boys are on the football team. The only one who isn't seems to have his own booster club. From high in the bleachers comes a strident cheer as several girls unfurl a banner saying simply "Jeremy/King." The 500 or more students in attendance take all this seriously, dutifully filling out ballots and depositing them in sanctioned receptacles on their way out. Within a couple of minutes the gym is empty, the student body presumably pepped to the max.
In the team room, before boarding the bus. Armstrong is revving everyone's engine. "They’re popping off," he says about St. Augustine, "but if ten guys hit 'em on the first play, they’ll stop popping off. They won’t set the pace, we will. It’s our homecoming."
"YEAH!"
In the locker room at Henry, the players finish suiting up. The mood is quiet but nonchalant. A trio of Colts eyes with scorn the posted school records for Henry’s baseball teams. "Most home runs — 7?" A smirk. "We killed all those records."
Allah Hillie is fussing with a helmet. "Had to get a new one." he deadpans. Did his get cracked? "Naw, I do the hitting." The team is loose.
In the end zone before the coin toss. Armstrong inverts the alien-canine metaphor. "We re in our own back yard. Nobody shits in our back yard!"
"THAT'S RIGHT!"
"Awright guys, let's go out there and represent your school real well and have some fun. Let's do it all on the field, fellas." And they trot off toward another shutout.
Only this time the Colts are too loose Within the first few minutes, it becomes clear that Crawford's game is in disarray. The players seem listless, on the field and on the sideline. St. Augustine’s game consists almost entirely of sending an ox-like running back (with the lawyerly name of Hunter Buckner) up the middle or around the end with the ball firmly in his grasp. Crawford is unable to contain him. It takes until the start of the second quarter for the Saints to score — their band plays "When the Saints Go Marching In" — and the wonder is why they haven't scored several times by then. Crawford is making mistakes big and small. A long pass down the sideline, intended for Vernon Shaver, is overthrown, one of many errant passes that night by Chris Townsend. Shaver and the defender collide, but nothing comes of it. When the offense comes off the field, Olivero educates him: "You gotta hit the ground, Vernon! You tnp and it's interference; you keep runnin’, the officials don't see nothin'!"
Midway through the second quarter, Armstrong is yelling at Olivero. No one seems to know why, and everyone is unnerved — unnerved at the sight of it. at the shellacking being administered to them, at the prospect of being whupped at Our Homecoming. The five straight wins and four shutouts are a vapor, a phantom. The only thing that seems real is the sight of Buckner’s meaty calves plodding through the Crawford defensive line, slowly but inexorably.
At halftime the score is still only 7-0, but looming larger is the question of what the coach can do to rally his team in the face of impending disaster. Anderson throws the score in their faces. "You guys are real good at makin' a show of how fired up you are," Armstrong begins, "and goin' out and playin' like dogshit. We should be genin' beat 21-0!
"We got a guy more concerned about his tuxedo and homecoming than he is about playin’ football! Mission Bay beat this team 29-6! It's gona get down and dirty, son!" He admonishes particular players, picks apart elements of the game plan that are not being executed, again threatens wholesale replacements in the lineup if improvement isn't quickly shown. Last, he puts the team on notice to cede bragging rights to the Saints, who. he says, have earned them for the moment. "We're gonna go out there and keep our mouths shut and take our medicine like men, and then, at the end of the game, we'll see."
But the view will not improve. Crawford seems unable to do anything right. St. Augustine's slower but bigger lineup has them stymied. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Saints take over on Crawford’s 35-yard line and throw a touchdown pass on the first play. The St. Augustine fans are the ones waving hankies. On the Crawford sideline, players offer up plaintive cries to their cohorts. "Get the ball, defense!" "Hey! Pump it up out here!" But there is no pumping up, and hope drains from the Crawford throng as the last minutes tick off the scoreboard. Several late Colt injuries show how lopsided the game is, despite the meager 14-0 final score. Vernon Shaver is tackled in midair on an incomplete pass play and is a long time getting up; when he finally does rise, he leaves the field slowly, clutching his shoulder. Peter Ervin limps off the field with a painful ankle, removes his shoe and sock, and sits grimacing on the bench. Chris Townsend, who has taken a terrible pounding tonight and braved a series of injuries throughout the season, sustains a concussion, his third to date, in the waning moments His doctor will later refuse to permit him to play again this year. Mercifully, time finally expires.
The mood on the bus... imagine a charter carrying souls to hell. A fight breaks out between two teammates, flares, and dies. The parking lot is jammed; the team may be trapped here in its misery forever. Weeks go by. Crowds mill about and stare at the traffic. Coaches eventually board. Armstrong gravely apologizes for his poor coaching, then blasts anyone who wants to blame a teammate. "We all got beat." he says, and that's that. Quiet prevails.
Halfway home, the mood still somber, Armstrong gets up and addresses the team again. "Hey, there's something I wanna say, and I want you to hear it from me. I did something tonight that was totally inexcusable, and I want to apologize in front of all of you to Coach Olivero for it. I don't want you guys blamin' anybody else, and I shouldn't either. I was just outcoached out there, and I had no right to take it out on Coach Olivero. So Coach, I'm sorry, and it won't happen again." Olivero gives him a brotherly jab. Hey. Coach. I'd already forgotten about it.
The street leading up to the gym is blocked off due to the homecoming dance, and the driver is instructed to park in the alley out by the baseball field. Heading down the alley, someone offers a morbid "One. Two. You. Know. What. Tb. Do." And the team responds with a dirgelike rendition of the alma mater. If their earlier version was jubilant and the students' version at the pep rally was merely rote, this one is positively funereal.
Armstrong is first off the bus, and the team follows him silently the 100 yards or so up to the gym Turning a corner and ascending a few steps right at the gym, the coach and the first few following behind him pass an apparently inconsequential scuffle involving three or four high-school-age boys. A growing crowd is milling in the parking lot just beyond. As more coaches and players pass by, the scuffle suddenly dissolves — or rather, all but one of the boys suddenly vanish. The last fellow is on his back and staggers to his feet. He emits a moan that may be an attempt at speech. His eyes look toward the unaware players passing by but settle on none of them. He cannot stand steadily. There is blood.
As Armstrong reaches the door, a few school staff members appear — a vice principal, other coaches, the head of campus security — agitated, alert. Someone says there was gang-related violence at the game... some arrests ... a stabbing... this scuffle a few feet away seems also to be gang-related ... apparently only the fellow staggering is a Crawford student, his attackers gang members...
The players are hustled into the gym, although several want to get into it. The combination of a humiliating loss and an ugly skirmish (victimizing, it is suggested, a friend of some players), right in their own back yard, is more than some can bear. But the adults are commanding, and the entire team is soon safely inside the gym.
The injured boy is carried into the coaches’ office. The police are called. A coach who has been at Crawford some 30 years allows as how "I was popped one, but I'm okay."
The vice principal is bleeding on the cheek, blood dripping in a neat line down to his jaw, but he protests that he is okay. He will later take eight stitches in his cheek. The boy is lying on a desk. His broken nose is bleeding into his throat, making his breathing difficult. Someone is tending to him, calming him. He wants to get up and leave, but a friend who has come by urges him to "lounge, man. lounge."
A dozen, two dozen people are streaming in and out of the office. A few girls, who might have been hustled inside for then: protection, sit in the men's locker room, slightly embarrassed. Outside in the parking lot and in the street beyond. 100 or more young people hang around waiting — some for the dance, some for more dangerous fun. The police arrive. A white girl and a black girl embrace just outside the coaches' office and are consumed in tears.
The vice principal and the security chief confer; the chief adamantly declares the dance canceled. They will need more police to make the decision stick. More patrol cars arrive, and an ambulance. Slowly, the parking lot empties as a crowd of seniors, some dressed casually, others more elegantly, begins to realize they will not have their homecoming dance. The band hired for the dance must now reload the equipment they had just finished unloading. The police secure the area and gradually disperse the crowd without further incident.
Mid-November. The Colts have rebounded from their loss to St. Augustine with twin 28-0 wins, against San Diego High and Christian High. They finish their regular season with an 8-2 record, 4-1 in their league, the City Central League. Tied with archrival Lincoln for best record in the league, they have captured the title on the strength of having beaten Lincoln in their October 14 game. Crawford thus enters the countywide playoffs seeded fourth out of 16 teams in the 2A division (comprising schools with medium-sized enrollments). Their first-round opponent in the single-elimination tournament is Ramona High. Whether from the clear mountain air or the fresh apples, the Ramona players have a staggering size advantage over Crawford: The offensive line averages six feet four and 240 pounds to the Crawford defensive line’s five feet eight and 140 or so pounds "But I'll tell you what." asserts Armstrong, "these street kids, they're not intimidated by a big person in a football uniform. That's not the scariest thing they've seen. They're not afraid to go smash face into that." Once again the Colts promise to fly around and have fun out there. How much and whose butt gets knocked where ... that will depend on who is more fired up.
Compounding the task for the Colts is a curious psychodrama. Vernon Shaver has inspired doubt in him among his teammates and, in the process, come close to frittering away a golden chance at a first-class education and a career in the pros. The week following the loss to St. Augustine, Shaver abruptly quit the team under mysterious circumstances. A few days later, he came to Armstrong asking to be reinstated. It's not up to me, the coach told him; it’s up to the team. If they vote you in, you're in, if not, you're out. The team voted to take him back, on one condition: that he do 400 yards of belly-busters each day of practice. This grueling regimen calls for the victim to sprint 100 yards one way and then back, with the added feature that at any moment, at the sound of a coach’s whistle he must immediately flop to his belly, push himself back up quickly, and continue his all-out sprint Shaver did his daily belly-busters without complaint and went on to score a 56-yard touchdown in the last regular game After another absence from practice, this one excused, Shaver has shown dedication at daily workouts and appears committed to his team and his future.
Sometimes motivation is a slippery thing. Armstrong calls Shaver the most talented athlete he has ever coached. But anyone in the game can tell you that talent alone does not produce greatness. Shaver has the kind of athletic ability that could lead Crawford to a championship, if he finds the desire. If he waltzes away from his team, no major college in the country will have him. But that, as they say, is what makes a ball game. For every tale of unmaximized potential, Armstrong will tell you of a tough kid, this close to ruination, who found not just a meal ticket but salvation in football — like the Crawford graduate who now starts for San Jose State and who recently visited him to say, "If it weren't for you, I'd be dead by now.”
Finally, one sees it’s not just the love of sport, the delight m seeing a body hurtle through space and not only accomplish but repeat the impossible, that keeps Dan Armstrong motivated. Through endless sweaty practices. Through budget cutbacks. Despite working without a full-time teaching contract. In the face of crowd violence, which has again forced officials to reschedule games to afternoons, and gang warfare erupting mere inches from his office door. Dan Armstrong keeps at it and hopes to spend his life at it because, in a culture all but stripped of a sound means of ritually initiating boys into manhood, of welcoming them into the tribe, of endowing them with the powers and responsibilities of being a man, he has found a way. Not the best way nor the only way, but one way to turn aimless youths from self-destruction. He does it because it is a good way to bleed off excess testosterone at less risk to bystanders than, say, a war. He does it because "it gives me a chance to compete when my eligibility's gone," but more than that, he does it for the same reason his students and colleagues and everyone who's ever thrown or caught a ball or gotten up from a blinding tackle half-dinged, with snot running out his nose does it: because of the longing to be brave and strong and true: because he's a man. *Reposted article from the SD Reader by Phil Catalfo of November 22, 1989

Chapter 10: Knock Knock
“So no one dusted you yet” she said before he could even knock.
“getting worried ‘bout me, old gal?” he teased, letting himself fall on his usual spot at the door.
A sarcastic laugh echoed from inside, he didn’t know much about acoustics, but he would bet it sounded like a big room, with long halls “Just wondering how no monster caught someone with such a predicable routine”
“believe me or not I'm really hard to track…. and that's not the only thing that's hard ‘bout me” said in a mocking tone.
“You are late, punctually 40 minutes late. I would think about rescheduling our meetings if i didn't knew that you would show up 40 minutes late anyway”
“so I’ve been bad” he adjusted his thick coat, closing it to better protect his ribs “ya want to punish me?” teased again, hearing the expected laughter.
“Oh you would certainly wish so” He thanked the stars for her mood today.
“I know ya LOVE me~” he purred, her laugh through the door always made him less miserable, she was the one person he knew wouldn't kill him... mostly because she was locked behind a magic sealed door, the fact that she was lonely enough to like his jokes was a huge bonus “ya were dying to hear my sexy voice”
“How pretentious!” She said with mock offense, thinking about it, not just today… she was on an incredible good mood lately “I was just here, sitting by myself killing time~”
“sounds like a party, what else yer killing lately?” She shifted through a constant set of moods weekly, between happy, sad, murderous, and apathetic, then back again to happy. This happy strike was taking two months, he was almost fearing the sad drawback and how it would affect the reclusive monster.
“Not much, I've been keeping myself busy most of the time” well that was unexpected.
“yer building new puzzles or some shit like that?” She had talked extensively that there was nothing to do in the Ruins except the puzzles that she maintained them as a part of monster forgotten culture and history.
She laughed warmly, last time he heard that laugh he was telling her about the first time little Papyrus used healing magic “Well you might say there is something puzzling about them”
“welp, whatever 'they' are it's working for ya” he thought about telling her she sounded happy, and mentally kicked himself for it, door or not, showing weakness was still showing weakness “haven't sound batshit crazy for a while”
“Aaarrrg” she hissed, didn't sound like the usual reptile monster, too much throat, too little forked tongue, he would have to cross that from the list “you insult me” the sound came from a place a little higher this time, and there was shuffling around her, shit, she had gotten up, he just wanted to nitpick, not to actually spoil her mood.
“h-hey come on, old gal, ya know yer one of the few sane people down this hole, huh?” She stopped moving with his pleading lie, sane was the wrong word, but talking to her was easily the safest moment of his day, she couldn't kill him and would always tell when someone else was approaching the door “just, just stay a little longer, just, just throw me a bone here, will ya?” Safety was not something he was willing to mess with.
“Well” to his relief she didn't sound angry, she was amused “since someone is so desperate to spill his guts out, I could stay for a little longer” she hated the word crazy, wasn't she even a little mad at him? “What is new out there?”
“look like I dig my grave back here huh?” He hated to sound desperate “I’m just curious, it’s all”
“I do hope you are not a cat monster then”
“wha–/” they never spoke about what kind of monsters they were, not that he wasn’t curious, but deep down he was glad she never asked “why?” Didn't she want–/
“Because curiosity killed it“
...
“fuck”
He held himself not to laugh too much, but failed.
“I walked right into this one”
“Indeed” her voice was warm and inviting, thank the stars he hadn't messed up.
He clutched his nearly healed ribs, each laugh sending a shot of pain to his spine, still worth it, he needed this laugh.
“But seriously, do tell”
“well snowdin is still a shithole, the dogs keep giving Boss a hard time” and making him angrier every day “Grillby's still good tho, best burgers, great drinks, free mustard”
“And what is bothering you, my friend?” For someone going only by his voice, she was almost as perceptive as he was.
He leaned his head on the door, closing his eyes, clinging to her last word “ya know me” his bones protested the new position, he could still feel the hard punches breaking his ribcage and the hateful stare “nothing gets under my skin” he shouldn't have overslept again, he knew Boss would get mad, he was asking for it at this point. “what about ya? nothing to share? the new found key to happiness?”
She was silent for a long moment, he was almost worried that she had caught on something else on his voice, but quickly dismissed it, he had kept his usual smile on place, no one could tell that something was wrong when he managed to keep his smile.
“They happened” she said almost apologetically “I am keeping them on the Ruins, they are safe here” well now it sounded less like a puzzle and more like an actual monster.
“who's the lucky fella?”
“A child” she confirmed his suspicion.
“a child, huh?” it made sense for her being happy, monster children were so rare these days, the last one he heard of was born 20 years ago, didn't developed right, still a small toddler to this day, not that he from all people, could say something about it.
“Well... two children, as far as I can tell…” he could hear the smile on her voice “one keeps hiding from me, but still stay near every time he thinks I'm not looking, and the older one is so sweet, they insist in saying they are siblings, and calling the smaller their brother” she laughs “he always scoffs at them, but I believe the feeling is mutual”
“heh, seems like ya got yerself a new family”
“Do you think so?” She sounded hopeful, more than he had ever heard her “Do you think I...” And she started laughing, but as it progressed it shifted from the warm tone to a more darker one “they… called me mother” the following hiccup sounded awfully like a sob “mother”.
He hadn't heard her cry in a long, long time “hey, don't let the runts get to ya” he didn't knew what to do, an open show of emotions like this was not something normal people did, but he sure as hell wanted to do something for her “ya don't have to go on adopting every–/”
“But I want to!” She wailed, shit, what did he do this time? “Is… the thing I… most want in *sob* in this world… to be *sob* called mother again”
He tried to say something, but he didn't know what, unwilling to say something to upset her even more, he just let her cry. Stars, she sounded as bad as when she guilt tripped him to make that promise… not that she knew she was guilt tripping him… There was no way she figured he was the one that handed the green soul to Asgore.
“I just… I can't lose any more children” shit… “how could I lose them?!” Shit, shit, what does he say?
“ya ain't gonna lose anyone” it's a blatant fake generic lie, but it made the crying noise pause “yer the strongest monster down there, right?” he tried to make his voice sound gentle.
If she wasn't strong, she wouldn't be able to sense the presence of people approaching, not from the other side of a magical door. There was a quiet murmur in response, he considered it an affirmative.
“i bet ya can scare anyone from messing with them” he knew she could, on her murderous days she could be terrifying, a dark aura screaming LV.
“I… I could…” she said “but I… I don’t think it’s necessary...” Why? Wasn't she scared of them getting killed a second ago? The mood shifts were not usually that quick “They… they befriended everyone”
“what?”
A small laugh just deepened his confusion.
“what do ya mean they befriended…”
“They” she was catching her breath “they made friends, with every monster on the Ruins” every strong monster he thought, everyone that mattered “from the weakest Whimsun to… well… me”
“how?” The surprise was evident, there was no way, the Ruins couldn't be all that friendlier than the rest of the Underground, it was impossible.
“Well” she said happiness surging again on her voice, a little bit of pride too “They are very determined“
He froze.
DT didn't sit well with monsters, he knew that.
She didn't know he knew that.
Hell! Most monsters couldn't even name the seven major soul traits, so as far as she knew he couldn't either…
And the only other time he heard her crying was when he told her the king had gathered another soul… another human soul…
“fuck”
He quickly covered his mouth, as if it would take the words away… it was only a whisper… maybe she hadn't heard him… she couldn’t know he knew.
“good thing they are” he managed to keep his voice even “sounds like a real sweetheart this one…” he had to make a joke to fake normality “having to worry about fights would be a major buzzkill for ‘em”
“Ha, ha, ha, indeed! They are just too sweet for this world”
“heh… a… a little angel right?”
She hesitated.
He cursed himself, of course that she would know of the prophecy, she was old, old monsters loved those things
“Yes” seem to be thinking, but not cautious, had caught the meaning, but not the joke, if he could guess “They are my little angel” said nostalgic “and I will smite anyone who try take them from me” this wasn't her murderous tone, wasn't a threat either, didn't even have killing intent behind it... it was just a fact.
“I'm sure ya will keep ‘em safe old gal” he didn't want to act on that promise… it was treason… who knows who he would have to dust to keep a surface spawn safe... his brother could have serious problems if the word got out “really safe on yer cozy house”
“I will!” She sounded so proud it pained him “I already have most of the books necessary for their education and I’m teaching them to cook and sew as well”
“good, good” he got up, he needed air “I have to go old gal, keep babying the little runts, will ya”
“I certainly will”
He walked away, another human was not what he was expecting, not for another decade
“And friend”
He stopped, anxiety clawing its way into his ribcage.
“Thank you”.
She knew.
He couldn't take it, teleported to Grillby's. It was still the middle of his shift, he grabbed his ribs on reflex of the phantom pain, Boss would be pissed, but he really needed a drink.

21 Fantasy Hockey Rambles
Every Sunday, we'll share 21 Fantasy Rambles — formerly 20 Fantasy Thoughts — from our writers at DobberHockey. These thoughts are curated from the past week's ‘Daily Ramblings’.
Writers: Michael Clifford, Ian Gooding, Cam Robinson, and Dobber
  1. Jesperi Kotkaniemi is a guy I’m keeping in my back pocket for 2019-20. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that the youngest player in the league is at least the team’s No.2 center next season. (mar7)
Kotkaniemi was a healthy scratch on two occasions this past week. It was the first time the 18-year-old has sat in the press box this season, as coach Claude Julien expressed some concern that fatigue was creeping into his game.
It should be noted that the youngster suited up in 84 total games last season – split between the Finnish Liiga and international tournaments. Prior to that, his career-high had been 41 contests. Despite averaging just 14 minutes a night with Montreal this season, the wear of 66 NHL games for a rookie is real.
There shouldn’t be any concerns about Kotkaniemi moving forward. He’s a spectacular playmaker with a bright future. (mar6)
  2. I don’t know how I didn’t know this, or maybe I did and forgot, but a big need for the Oilers is a top puck-moving defenseman and they actually drafted Erik Gustafsson (fourth round, 2012). They couldn’t come to terms with him (or didn’t want to) in 2014 and lost him. A year later, Chicago signed him. Four years later, he has 48 points in 65 games. (mar4)
  3. At this time last month, we were worried that an Artemi Panarin trade would hurt Cam Atkinson’s value. That scenario looks like it will still play out – just not until after the season.
For the moment, Atkinson continues to roll and shows a career high of 38 goals. As the Blue Jackets attempt to deliver on their all-in playoff push, expect them to ride their leading goal scorer. Atkinson has logged at least 20 minutes in each of his last four games. (mar10)
  4. It’s a combination of the new coach and the fact that all the star players are gone, well…more of the latter, but Chris Tierney is finally getting big power-play time.
I almost really like his outlook for next year. First, he’s one of the best players on the team now (who are they going to sign that is better? Will anyone even want to go there this summer?).
Second, he’ll be 25 next season. I love the age of 26 the most in fantasy, but that’s close enough.
Third, his trend is astonishingly steady. It goes upward at a nice pace, even going up a little during the supposed sophomore slump: 0.25, 0.29, 0.49 points-per-game average the last three years and is 0.61 this year. The only problem is – and it’s a big one – to whom will he give the puck? If he leads all Ottawa forwards in scoring next year will that be with 49 points? (mar4)
  5. After a strong first half, Sharks’ Timo Meier had cooled off in the new year with just three goals in 23 games in January and February. The switch has turned on in March with five goals over his last four games, to bring his current season total to 26. Just in time for your fantasy playoffs. (mar10)
  6. I thought I’d been seeing Vladislav Namestnikov’s name in the boxscore more often lately and his recent numbers prove it. Over his last 12 games, Namestnikov has 11 points (6g-5a), including his three-point game on Saturday.
I mentioned him last month when he began his run with another three-point game (2g-1a) after being held without a point in his previous 10 games. A commenter who must have watched the game replied that “nothing has changed because both goals were gifts” – one an empty-netter, the other a giveaway by the goalie.
Something has changed, though: his ice time. Namestnikov averaged just 13 minutes over the first quarter, while over the last half-dozen games he has averaged 18 minutes. The trades of Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes have likely had that effect. (mar10)
  7. Before adding a goal and two helpers, Alex Tuch, had entered Saturday’s matchup with just four points in his last 16 games. With the addition of Stone, Tuch has been bumped down from the Paul Stastny – Max Pacioretty line to the Cody Eakin line. That’s a significant drop in value. (mar10)
  8. I might be cherry-picking stats here, but Ryan Strome has 12 points (6g-6a) over his last 14 games, including two goals and an assist on Saturday. Over his last six games he’s also been averaging 18 minutes per game. Looks like a midseason trade has helped not one, but two Strome brothers. (mar10)
  9. When colleague Cam Robinson discussed ‘stacking mates’ in a recent Ramblings, it felt like he was talking directly to me! You see, I own three Florida Panthers on one of my teams: Aleksander Barkov, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mike Hoffman. (On this same roster, I also owned three Ottawa Senators until Matt Duchene and Mark Stone were traded.)
Yes, I can attest to the fact that this can be a risky strategy, particularly in head-to-head fantasy setups, where the number of games played and the team’s overall output can have a significant impact on the week’s results. It kind of happened to me by accident after Duchene was traded last season and Hoffman was traded during the offseason. Yet, I won my league last season, and I’m in contention again this season. So, if you decide to stack your roster, at least pick the team’s best players, which will at least minimize the risk. Otherwise, the mutual fund strategy of diversification works best for your fantasy portfolio.
If you own multiple Panthers players and this is a critical week for you, then stacking has paid back in spades for you. Barkov picked up not one, not two, not three, not four, but FIVE assists on Friday, while Huberdeau added a goal and three assists. In fact, the Barkov-Huberdeau-Evgenii Dadonov line was a combined plus-14, with the latter chipping in three helpers of his own.
Over consecutive nights, Barkov and Huberdeau have been scorching hot, accruing seven points each. Huby has now hit 70 points for the first time in his career, while Barkov is just three points shy of his 78-point career high set last season. Start these Panthers with confidence as their team attempts a last-ditch playoff push. (mar9)
  10. After Mike Babcock said that Frederik Andersen would be held to 56 appearances, he clarified that he miscalculated that number and that Andersen would actually be held to 60 games (Chris Johnston). The 56-appearance projection would basically have Andersen split starts with Garret Sparks for the rest of the season, but an extra four starts means that Andersen will receive close to one more start per week than that. That’s an arrangement that Andersen owners should be able to live with.
As an Andersen owner, I figured that he could be looking at a workload reduction anyway, since the Leafs have been on a collision course with the Bruins all season anyway to face each other in the first round. What’s an extra home playoff game if the team is worn out by the playoffs? (mar9)
  11. Some ill-timed news for fantasy owners of Gabriel Landeskog. The Colorado captain is expected to be sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks with an upper-body injury. This timeline effectively ends Landeskog’s regular season and makes him droppable in non-keeper formats that do not use separate IR slots, which will only be useful in the event that he returns significantly earlier than expected.
In just 68 games, Landeskog had already set career highs in goals, points, and power-play points. His shot total is the highest since his rookie season (270 SOG), while his 114 hits at the time of injury ranked him second on the Avalanche. Of course, playing on arguably the league’s best line with two of the league’s top-10 scorers in Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon doesn’t hurt. Regardless, it’s been a career season for Landeskog, even if it has been cut short.
Alexander Kerfoot seems like a possibility to be bumped up to the top line, which would be a huge boost to his fantasy value. Kerfoot has just one goal over his past six games, so his value could use a jumpstart anyway. (mar9)
  12. The Bruins are now 15-0-4 since January 29. That’s great news for Tuukka Rask owners, as he has won 10 of his last 11 games. Since the beginning of February, Rask has a 1.97 GAA and a .923 SV%. (mar10)
  13. Our Report Generator on DobberHockey continues to be improved. The most recent addition has been in the power play (PP) Data area, where Eric Daoust has included PPPt/60 – which is essentially how many power-play points a player gets for every 60 minutes of power-play deployment. It’s a mouthful, but it provides tangible evidence to support how effective a player is on a man-advantage unit.
To me, this is a potential gold mine. Teams are constantly looking to improve their special teams’ production and finding players who are thriving in a limited role would likely be a good starting point in attempting to unearth assets that will see their value increase with further opportunities.
At the top of this list, we see the elites: Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, David Pastrnak, Phil Kessel, Brent Burns, etc. But what I’m looking for are those undervalued players, for example:  Jack Roslovic and Kevin Labanc. (mar8)
  14. Roslovic: Pegged by many as a prime candidate to steal the second-line center gig in Winnipeg this season, Roslovic has found himself locked in the bottom-six skating fewer than 10 minutes a contest and very few power-play opportunities. However, in his 45 minutes of man-advantage action, the 22-year-old has produced 7.9 PPPt/60. As of Friday, that number put him a shade ahead of Patrice Bergeron.
The Jets are going to run into cap issues soon, and when they do, Roslovic will be there to eat up offensive minutes for a reasonable price. He'll be another good bet to garner more interest next season assuming Winnipeg doesn't find a way to add a center this offseason. (mar8)
  15. Labanc: The Sharks have a bevy of forward talent to choose from when an opponent heads to the sin bin. But it's Labanc who leads them in PPPt/60. His 7.1 PPPt/60 is amongst the league-leaders and not due to small sample size. His 145 minutes of man-advantage action (also as of Friday) is less than the big dogs, but still averaging out to over two-minutes per contest.
He'll need to continue to fight off Timo Meier for that top unit spot, but Labanc has shown capable of improving production year-over-year. A few more minutes per night and we could be talking about a 65-point forward next season. (mar8)
  16. Another neat tool has been added to our Dobber Prospects profiles projecting a prospect based on production at different levels in different leagues (PNHLe), as calculated by Mason Black. The one linked above is of Jordan Kyrou but you can check in on any of your favourite prospects to see what could be expected of them. (mar7)
  17. In order to take the next step in fantasy relevance, Travis Sanheim needs to do two things: shoot more and earn meaningful power play minutes. One of those things is in his control and one is not. He’s currently third on the team depth chart for power play minutes behind Shayne Gostisbehere and Ivan Provorov and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon. In that sense, it’ll be very hard for Sanheim to have significant fantasy relevance.
Consider that in 2017-18, Provorov was the only defenseman with 10 or fewer PPPs to crack 40 points. This year, going into Thursday action, Mattias Ekholm had already cracked 40 points with just seven PPPs, while Jared Spurgeon (39) and Ryan Ellis (36) were the only other two within striking distance with eight or fewer PPPs. In other words, for Sanheim to get to that magical 40-point mark with his current level of PP production (which is related to his PP minutes allotment), he’ll need a lot to go right. It’s not something to rely upon.
Now, he can control how much he shoots, and I’m not overly concerned about the dip this year. It’s really his first full season and there is a laundry list of guys who are high volume shooters now who weren’t earlier in their career. Names like Roman Josi, Dougie Hamilton, and Tyson Barrie all shot less earlier in their careers, even if Barrie’s career numbers are a bit wonky because of those awful Avs teams from a few years ago. It could take two or three more years before Sanheim really finds whatever his normal shot level will be.
Until he takes over PP duties for one of Gostisbehere or Provorov, Ekholm’s 2018-19 season should be seen as some sort of ceiling for what Sanheim can achieve. With a bit of luck, he can be a 10-goal, 45-point defenseman. However, it’s most likely he settles in somewhere around 7-8 goals and 35 points for now. (mar7)
  18. Just spit-balling but I’m not sure what to make of Luke Kunin’s season so far. The underlying numbers aren’t great but how much of that is due to injuries on his part and upheaval of the roster by management? It can’t be an easy situation to overcome.
By the eye, he’s looked fine whenever I’ve watched him if unspectacular. He should have a big role on this team in 2019-20 (he’s played 17:40 per game over the last month) so he’ll be a guy to follow over the final month. It could tell us a lot about what to expect from him next year. (mar5)
  19. Just wanted to chime in briefly on Jesse Puljujarvi’s injury. It’s clear that three years of development from the Oilers has done nothing, and now he’s on the shelf for most of the summer with double hip surgery. To me, that means 2019-20 will be mostly getting back up to speed as he’s behind the eight ball again. Not that this effectively ends his career, but if next year is basically just trying to get his legs under him following surgery, he’ll be four years into his career with little to show for it, even with this year and next mostly being a wash due to injury. I wonder how much longer we wait before the Oilers move on. (mar5)
  20. A year and a half ago I was high on Nathan Beaulieu, touting him as a strong dark horse. I did this because the Sabres went after him hard, acquiring him and immediately putting him on their power play. They desperately wanted him to succeed as a PP QB.
A dark horse is all about opportunity. You’re betting purely on opportunity and not on results (because none are there yet). In this case, it flopped. I had him in two of my leagues and dropped him as soon as I could after the failure became clear. Now he’s been cast off to the Jets.
I wonder if he could be a depth producer next year in the way that Tyler Myers has been this year. Beaulieu is 26 years old, so the timing is right. As a former first-round pick, the talent is there. Somewhere. And this is a high-scoring team so he could get 20 points almost by accident. He is an RFA this summer. (mar4)
  21. With another two goals on Saturday, Nino Niederreiter has 11 goals and 21 points in 22 games as a Hurricane. He’s fitting right in. Not that Wild fans need to be reminded, but Victor Rask has a goal and an assist in 10 games as a member of the Wild. Rask is currently on IR as well. (mar10)
  Have a good week, folks!!

I work for a small business that employs around 15 people. The owner purchases insurance for all the employees. I keep hearing opponents say that this bill is going to hurt small businesses, but I don't see how it would hurt the one I am employed by. My company already purchases insurance, and even if it didn't, we don't have the 50 or more employees required for the government mandate to purchase insurance to apply to us. Car Insurance Claim Help?
Car Insurance Claim Help? On the 4/7/2011 I was at a set of traffic lights that was (RED) of my way to the shops. As the lights went green I begin to move off slowly as I did another car came from the left of me and tried to turn right as he speed up he crashed into the drivers side of the car. He clearly jumped a red light (Clearly Seen on CCTV). I was in total shock at the time! After he crashed into my car he went to drive off by reversing, I jumped out of my car to stood in his was so he could not drive off the witness behind me called the police while I was stopping his from driving off he started to drive forwards trying to me me out the way. After the driver spoke to the police on the phone, he then gave me his Name, Phone number and Insurance information. The next day I called my insurance company they was vary helpful and I believe the clam would be settled in my favor as I had CCTV of the crash as I had a camera inside of my car and a witness that was behind my car at the time of the crash. After nearly 4Months I have now revived a letter stating that the claim has been closed on a Without Prejudice Basis. When I contacted Aviva to see what the 3rd party has not accepted full liability they said it was dealt with like this as the 3rd party who crashed into me was not responding to and calls or letters that have send him. Aviva did not asked to see the CCTV of the crash and did not take into account the witness statement. WHAT CAN I DOOO??""

When does health insurance expire when you move out of state?
Suppose you have health insurance in New York, and you plan to move to California. Before the actual move, you drive a vehicle across country, get a California license, register your vehicle, and register to vote. Then you fly back to New York for four months. You go to the doctor, and your NY insurance pays up. But then you get a letter from the insurance company, sent to the CA address but forwarded to NY, saying they heard you'd moved, so your insurance will be cancelled. You write back, telling them their information is premature, and that you'll change insurance when you complete the move. After four months, you complete the move to CA, and two days after your arrival, you start feeling woozy -- feverish with occasional headaches -- requiring bed rest and lots of fluids. If this doesn't clear up in a day or two, you'll want to see a doctor. Will you be covered by the NY insurance, given that you haven't had time yet to get CA insurance?""

the Meat Life 2017-2018 Bowl Preview – the New Year’s Six and the Best of the Rest
The bowl season started this weekend!  Although I’ll be watching a lot of these games, I’m only really focused on the New Year’s Six matchups and a handful of the other ones.  My bowl philosophy is that these bowls should mean a little something, it doesn’t make sense to me to have teams make it to a bowl game just because they are 6-6.  I would much rather the number of bowl be cut in half, to about 20 bowl games ideally. That way we are seeing a lot of the better teams playing these things.  But that’s my take.  Football is football, so I’ll still be watching, nonetheless.  So in this entry, I’ll go over my must-see bowls --- we’ll look at the New Year’s Six and four others to watch.
Outside the New Year’s Six – The best of the rest:
Camping World Bowl – Thursday 12/28 – 4:15pm CST ESPN 22 Virginia Tech Hokies (9-3) vs 19 Oklahoma State Cowboys (9-3)
Tumblr media
Contrasting styles with Va Tech’s stingy defense versus the high-flying Oklahoma State offense.  If things get tight and slow down, that falls in the Hokies favor.  But if things break down and turn into a shootout late, look at the Cowboys to prevail. VT QB Josh Jackson has been solid most of the year, but I don’t expect him to keep up with OSU QB Mason Rudolph. Meat Prediction: OSU 41-31
Valero Alamo Bowl – Thursday 12/28 – 8:00pm CST ESPN 13 Stanford Cardinal (9-4) vs 15 TCU Horned Frogs (10-3)
Tumblr media
This bowl game has been a fun one in recent years.  Remember last season when Oregon was up 31-0 on TCU at half and the Horned Frogs stormed all the way back to tie it at 31-31 at the end of regulation?  TCU went on to win in 3OT.  This matchup looks to be a little different, featuring strength versus strength.  Stanford’s Heisman finalist RB Bryce Love goes up against one of the stingiest run defenses in the country in TCU.  Look for Love to test the TCU front led by SI All-American DE Mat Boesen.  Although both teams can score, I think this will be on the lower scoring. Meat Prediction: TCU 24-21
San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl – Thursday 12/28 – 8:00pm CST FS1 18 Washington State Cougars (9-3) vs 16 Michigan State Spartans (9-3)
Tumblr media
Who would have thought a Mike Leach-coached team would have an improved defense?  The Cougars made great strides on defense this season putting them in the thick of the Pac-12 hunt late into the season, despite Leach’s hot and cold streak with QB Luke Falk.  Michigan State bounced back from a rough 3-9 season last year to turn it around and scratch and claw to a gutty 9-3 record that included at upset of then top ten Penn State.  As admirable as the Spartans’ effort has been this season, I can’t see them getting past Wazzu. Meat Prediction: Washington State 31-17
Citrus Bowl presented by Overton’s – Monday 1/1 – 12:00pm CST ABC 14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-3) vs 17 LSU Tigers (9-3)
Tumblr media
If you are more inclined to the old school style football of ground and pound offense and stout defenses, this may be the bowl game for you.  You’ll get to see the exciting runningback matchup of Notre Dame’s Josh Adams and LSU’s Derrius Guice.  Look for both teams to try to control the clock with the run game in this one. I’ll give the QB edge to the Irish though, with Brandon Wimbush bringing an element of mobility and rushing. Wimbush has had four 100+ yard rushing games this season, including a 207 yard rushing night against Boston College. Meat Prediction: Notre Dame 27-20
 The New Year’s Six:
Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic – Friday 12/29 – 7:30pm CST ESPN 8 USC Trojans (11-2) vs 5 Ohio State Buckeyes (11-2)
Tumblr media
For those itching for a traditional Rose Bowl matchup, this is it.  Only it’ll be in the DFW rather than LA.  Both teams had grievances against the playoff committee excluding them from the playoff. Both have a chance to prove they belong. USC features future NFLer QB Sam Darnold, who had a rough start to the season and was a turnover machine until his offensive line finally got healthy.  They go up against the most Jekyll and Hyde team in college football this season in Ohio State.  While QB JT Barrett has looked like an All-American at times, he and the Bucks have also looked like the Cleveland Browns (the most glaring being the embarrassing 55-24 loss to 7-5 Iowa).  Look for this to be a good one. Meat Prediction: USC 38-31
Playstation Fiesta Bowl – Saturday 12/30 – 3:00pm CST ESPN 11 Washington Huskies (10-2) vs 9 Penn State Nittany Lions (10-2)
Tumblr media
Lots of Pac-12 versus Big Ten love in these bowl games.  They could rename this bowl matchup the “What Could Have Been Bowl.”  Both teams had playoff aspirations as late as early November. Both their chances unraveled. But, a chance at redemption against a quality opponent arises.  Both have great defensive teams against the run, and both feature spectacular runningbacks. Washington has the speedster Myles Gaskin while Penn State has the Swiss Army Knife half-season Heisman frontrunner Saquon Barkley.  This may come down to the QB matchup, were I’ll give the edge to the Nittany Lions Trace McSorley over Huskies Jake Browning. Meat Prediction: Penn State 31-27
Capital One Orange Bowl – Saturday 12/30 – 7:00pm CST ESPN 6 Wisconsin Badgers (12-1) vs 10 Miami Hurricanes (10-2)
Tumblr media
Another “What Could Have Been Bowl” perhaps.  Wisconsin’s only loss was the Big Ten Championship to Ohio State in the infamous “Turf Game.”  Miami fluttered at the end of the seasons with back-to-back losses to Pitt and Clemson in the ACC Championship.  This will be great to see the ground and pound game of Badger RB Jonathan Taylor (1847 yards, 13 TDs rushing for the season) against the opportunistic Turnover Chain gang of the Canes defense.  Both QBs in this matchup, Wisconsin’s Alex Hornibrook and Miami’s Malik Rosier, are great off the play-action and Rosier has the mobility to make something happen in the run game as well.  I see the athletes of Miami pulling away late in this one. Meat Prediction: Miami 23-17
Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl – Monday 1/1 – 11:30am CST ESPN 12 UCF Knights (12-0) vs 7 Auburn Tigers (10-3)
Tumblr media
UCF’s Scott Frost’s farewell bowl as he gets set to take over at Nebraska.  Auburn has got to be burning up that instead of being in the playoff they are playing a Group of Five team in their bowl trip.  But this is a UCF Group of Five team that is undefeated and has been described by some pundits out there as “Oklahoma-lite” --- prolific offense led by QB McKenzie Milton with a defense just good enough to let them hang with teams.  Auburn has gained much balance on offense this season behind QB Jarrett Stidham and RB Kerryon Johnson with one of the best defensive fronts in the SEC.  But it’s hard not to ignore the history of Group of Five teams being the more focused group in these New Year’s Six bowls, with Boise State (2014 season) and Houston (2015 season) able to pull the upset the first two years of this format.  I think it might be more of the same here.  Look for the shootout, and UCF loves a good shootout to send Scott Frost out on a high note. Meat Prediction: UCF 44-41
Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual (CFP Semifinal) – Monday 1/1 – 4:00pm CST ESPN 3 Georgia Bulldogs (12-1) vs 2 Oklahoma Sooners (12-1)
Tumblr media
I don’t like picking or predicting Sooners games.  They usually don’t end well if I confidently pick them.  This game scares me only in the sense that the last time Oklahoma was in the CFP in 2015, they were shutout in the second half against Clemson where the first half showed much promise.  While Georgia doesn’t have as dynamic a QB as Deshaun Watson was for Clemson in their freshman Jake Fromm, the Georgia offense still presents a bit of a challenge from the run game with the Bulldogs’ RB rotation of Nick Chubb and Sony Michel.  And the Bulldogs defense has the Butkus Award-winning LB Roquan Smith leading a stout front-seven.  Still, there is no reason to think that Oklahoma Heisman QB Baker Mayfield can’t lead the offense to score 30+.  RB Rodney Anderson’s name has been cleared and has been the hottest, most productive back in the second half of the season.  And Mayfield has TE Mark Andrews, and WRs “Hollywood” Brown and CeeDee Lamb, and multipurpose FB Dimitri Flowers among other weapons.  It’ll be up to the young Sooners defense led by Walter Camp All-American DE Ogbonnia Okoronkwo to step up and slow down the Bulldogs offense.  This should be a good game.  I just can’t bring myself to make a pick.
AllState Sugar Bowl (CFP Semifinal) – Monday 1/1 – 7:45pm CST ESPN 4 Alabama Crimson Tide (11-1) vs 1 Clemson Tigers (12-1)
Tumblr media
The CFP Rematch III.  The two teams that faced each other in the last two national title games square off again, this time in the semifinal.  Outside of a close road loss at a 4-8 Syracuse, Clemson has certainly looked the part of a defending champion.  DC Brent Venables’ front seven is probably the best in college football.  QB Kelly Bryant, while not as dynamic as Watson, has led the offense.  Meanwhile, Alabama seems to have looked shaky at times against stiffer competition, particularly in the Iron Bowl loss to Auburn. The playoff committee may have seen them as better than Ohio State in direct comparison, but outside of Ohio State’s blowout loss to Iowa, I didn’t see their argument.  Is Bama’s defense good?  Yes.  The Tide and the Tigers possess the top two scoring defenses in the country.  But can Bama’s offense keep pace with Clemson’s? Bama QB Jalen Hurts, while taking good care of the football (only 1 INT all year) has not been as productive or as explosive as last season.  Vegas has Alabama favored, but I don’t know.  I just don’t see it.  Maybe it’s my hater glasses but I don’t see it.  And as much as I think Bama is a better matchup for a potential game for the title against the Sooners, I can’t see Clemson losing this game.  It’ll be close though. Meat Prediction: Clemson 23-20
I’m going to wait for the semifinal matches to actually play out before picking a national champion. My preseason pick for national champ got eliminated the first week of the season, so we won’t go there.
Enjoy the bowl season!  I’ll check back in with you guys before the College Football Playoff National

"Should I sue or settle with the insurance company?
So, my 2010 Sentra (Brand New less than 6K miles) was rearended. It's been hell dealing with the other guy's insurance company- never return calls, no followup, etc..... My car is back looking great except for minor details (issue with the trunk) which I hope to work out with the shop. They are giving me a low ball offer on diminished value and I live in a state that grants diminished value Here are my questions: 1) Is there a simple calculator that can be used to calculate diminshed value? The car was in pristine condition prior to the wreck 2) At this point, is it better to use a Attorney? I want to be compensated for days lost from work, medical expenses, diminished value, pain and suffering (also if shop is not able to work out minor repair detail I want compensation for that )

What is the truth about cash value life insurance?
I have read from many different sources that term insurance is the best way to go, and just invest in mutual funds. But, I personally know a few people who own cash value policies. They have something called equity indexed life insurance (not variable life insurance) and seem to be pretty happy with it. Does anyone know anything about or have any experience with this kind of insurance? I'm considering going with something like that because I was told it's basically term insurance with a savings component where you earn interest based on the upward movement of the S&P 500, but you're not actually investing in the market so there's supposed to be no downside risk. Anyone? Thanks.""

Why is homeowners insurance so high?
Been paying on my house for over 20 years.Never missed a payment.Always pay my taxes on time.Always carry insurance.Raised 3 children on my own.Always worked.Didnt collect food stamps or state insurance.Payed back anything I borrowed.Could not afford higher education. Was paying to raise my children.Husband left when kids were young.Owes me over 70000 in child support.Never covered one cent of their medical bills.Their all in late 20s and early 30s now.I guess all that doesn't really matter except for the fact that because I was too proud to suck off the taxpayers I worked.I made my bed and I slept in it. .But now im being penalized again.Insurance rates based on many things like your education. So,because I am stupidier than the average driver I will probably get in more accidents. How but this?Im over 50.No accidents No tickets.Always drive older vechicles so its not possible to speed even if I wanted to.I always thought my car insurance would go down after 50.In a few years they'll be jacking it higher because im too old. When does it stop?Okay. So back to the house insurance. If they refuse me house insurance Ill lose my house. All the money in interest and principal ive payed over the years will be in vane. The banks and mortgage companies will keep all the money ive worked for and take the house too.Homeless .Wont beable to work wont beable to pay taxes.will probably freeze to death and die..All because the sharks that call themselves insurance executives need to take another vacation.I wonder if they have mothers. If you have someone living in your house who has gotten a ticket or so on,your rates go upAnother way they our breaking up the American family. Is it true our politicans have sold us out to other countries.China for one. They are buying up our food sources. They probaly don't want us to beable to grow our own foods or have our own livestock. The crops are genetically engineered so our seeds probably are too. They probably own the insurance companies tooHow do people go to florida for the winter and leave their houses vacant without paying higher rates.I was told insurance companies don't cover vacant homes. Thanks for listening.Bless you""
Is healthcare ever going to be affordable again in our country?

Car Insurance when selling Car?
Ok the situation is as follows: I am selling my car for a new one. I have asked my current insurer to transfer my policy to the new car which is fine. However I then questioned about temporarily insuring my old car under the policy and they wanted a ridiculous amount of money for a week - I also do not know how long it will take to sell the car. I questioned the amount and asked what customers generally do when they wish to keep an old car insured. I was told that I could drive my old car on a 3rd party basis as my policy going forward covers me fully comprehensive. I thought fantastic - but then I was shocked when I was told that if I drive the car it is insured 3rd party only but as soon as I park it up somewhere it is uninsured and could be towed away by the police. I have since read my policy document which claim that I can drive any other car 3rd party providing I do not own the car and that there is already insurance in place? Can anyone clarify the above or provide advice. I am so confused and unfortunately are unable to call my insurer back now or over the next couple days? Thanks in advance

Why Is my car insurance so expensive?
I'm just trying to find a good quote for the renewal of my car insurance, due in November 10. The cheapest I can get for a THIRD PARTY FIRE & THEFT only is 800!!!! for the following circumstances: Driver: male 32 yo, EU national living in the UK since 2003.Home owner. No convictions or anything like that. Full UK licence that I got converted in 2005, though I had held a full EU licence for 9 years before that. In full employment. The car: 1998 R reg For Fiesta LX 1.8 Diesel. 3 doors hatchback. Kept in a secure (bollards) street at home during the night and in the company's hyper secure car park during the day. Miles per year: up to 9000. With factory fitted immobiliser plus a anti theft wheel lock. The postcode is not the best, but it can't be the reason for it being so expensive, because my neighbours pay something ridiculous, like 30 or 40 per month for a fully comp policy, and also, because it's not a fully comp policy that I'm after and the car is so cheap (600) that it wouldn't make sense. I'm even ready to go for a third party only, but it turns out even more expensive in the searches... I've even tried with other cars with smaller engines thinking that maybe replacing the car would help... I'm really confused, and that famous website is not helping at all. Hopefully somebody can shed some light on where the problem is. It'd be so very much appreciated...""

Accident Advice - Car without insurance?
My friend was driving her car on a busy highway, minding her own business. Suddenly a large SUV hits her rear quarter and pushes her off the road, down a hill, and into a ditch. Apparently, and there were about 10 witnesses to the situation, the driver who hit her was involved in some sort of road-rage war for about 5 miles, ending when she hit my friend's car. My friend is ok, but her insurance had expired on her car. The police didn't ask for her insurance that day. She learned a lesson and has since payed up online, so the insurance co doesn't know about the accident. Both of the drivers involved in the road rage were charged with reckless driving, and one of them even got arrested. Our question is this: she has $1400 in damage to her vehicle. She is willing to pay what she needs to pay to get her car out, just to avoid getting in trouble for driving without insurance. Are there any other options for her?""

Ramblings: Anderson Shutout In NHL100 Classic, Landeskog’s Five-Point Game (Dec 17)
Anderson Shutout In Outdoor Game, Landeskog’s Five-Point Game, plus more…
It has been an eventful past week for the Ottawa Senators, if you factor in the Erik Karlsson no-trade list and the Eugene Melnyk comments. But the outdoor game couldn’t have gone any better for the Senators, who win 3-0 over Montreal in a game marking the NHL’s very first game 100 years ago.
Craig Anderson stopped all 28 shots he faced to pick up his second shutout of the season. Even though Anderson has been struggling this season, I was sure to start him for this game, as outdoor games (at least ones with colder temperatures) seem to favor the goalies (at least according to my observations). Anderson is the fourth goalie to earn a shutout in an outdoor game. He has now had back-to-back quality starts, which should make his owners feel a little better about using him going forward. At least his goals-against average is now below 3.00 and his save percentage above .900.
Here’s the opening goal scored by playoff hero Jean-Gabriel Pageau. This is a great call by Jim Hughson. Perfectly timed.
"What this game needs now is Joe Malone, or…"

Erik Karlsson stuffed his fantasy owners’ stockings in this game. One assist, a plus-3 ranking, seven shots on goal, and eight blocked shots. All in 32:55 of icetime, which set a record for time on ice in an outdoor game. Fun times again. If you read my weekly column at Sportsnet, I suggested that you could try to buy low on him.

One of those goalies who has earned a shutout in an outdoor game was Cam Talbot, which happened last season. Talbot returned to the Oilers’ lineup on Saturday afternoon, playing his first game since late November. Talbot stopped 29 of 31 shots in the Oilers’ 3-2 win. As much as fantasy owners have been down on Talbot this season, he had won three games in a row before his injury. So in each of his four consecutive wins, he has allowed just two goals in each start. There’s still a buy-low opportunity here.
One other thing: fantasy owners can now officially shed Laurent Brossoit if they’ve been hanging onto him.
Both of Talbot’s two goals allowed on Saturday afternoon were to Matt Dumba. The Wild blueliner had scored just one goal over the first two months of the season, but he has scored four goals during December.
My drop of the week recommendation was also from this game. Mikko Koivu has now gone 10 consecutive games without a point and 23 consecutive games without a goal. Koivu is normally very reliable (at least for assists), but there are probably more productive options at a deep center position on your league’s waiver wire at the moment.
*
Speaking of point streaks (the good kind this time), David Pastrnak extended his to 11 games with an assist. His point streak is now tied for the longest this season along with Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov. Pastrnak assisted on a goal by Brad Marchand, who has an eight-game point streak of his own, which includes 12 points (5g-7a).

On a busy Saturday, it’s unlikely that many fantasy owners would have rolled the dice on Blues’ backup Carter Hutton. But the precious few that did were handsomely rewarded, as he stopped all 48 shots he faced in the Blues’ 2-0 win over Winnipeg. Hutton had not started in about two weeks because of a foot injury.
By the way, Sunday seems to be the best day for goalie streaming starts. There are fewer games, so it’s easier to slot in a goalie that’s not one of your regulars. Those that are willing to reach out for one probably need to catch up in goaltending categories, and since it’s the final day of the week it’s all or nothing. It worked for me with Curtis McElhinney last week, who pitched a shutout last Sunday.
Sticking with the Blues, here's some good news regarding an Alex Pietrangelo return in the very near future.
Yeo says it’s possible that Brodziak and Pietrangelo play tomorrow. #stlblues

I said this in another Ramblings earlier this season, but it’s worth mentioning again: the New York Islanders are a hidden gem of fantasy talent. However, the one player that we all know about leads the way. John Tavares scored a goal and added two assists to give him two consecutive three-point games and nine points over his last four games. We talk about how Tavares’ talent rubs off on linemates Josh Bailey and Anders Lee. But there also seems to be mutual benefit, as Tavares is scoring at over a point per game (40 points in 33 games) for the first time in three seasons.
*
Shayne Gostisbehere picked up what I like to call the double-double for his fantasy owners on Saturday. No, I’m not talking about the famous Tim Horton’s coffee. I’m referring to two goals, both of which were on the power play. With 24 points in 29 games, that 50-point season that we projected for Ghost is now well within reach.
*
The Colorado/Tampa Bay game was an eventful game with plenty to unpack, including a number of fantasy standouts and even a controversial hit.
Just like Jack Eichel on Friday night, Gabriel Landeskog’s monster game on Saturday went to waste when it came to determining his team’s result. Landeskog posted a hat trick to go with two assists, which included two goals in a third period where the Avs exploded for four goals to make this into a game. Landeskog had not scored a point in his three previous games, but don’t assume that this season resembles last season’s disaster. In just 28 games, Landeskog is just nine points shy (at 24 points) from matching his point total from all of last season.
Nathan MacKinnon was impressive again, scoring two goals and adding an assist with seven shots on goal. So were you ready to give up on him before this season? Even though it seems as though he’s been in the league a while, he is only 22 years of age. And he’s finally scoring at over a point per game (38 points in 32 games).
Tyson Barrie recorded three helpers in the third period of this game, two of which were on the power play. Another example of how much better things are in Colorado this season: Barrie already has one more power-play point (11 PPP) than he had all of last season.
In a winning cause, Anton Stralman scored two goals and added an assist. After struggling through November (one assist in 12 games), he’s turned it up in December with five points in seven games. Stralman probably shouldn’t be one of your fantasy d-men at the moment, though, as he has yet to score a power-play point this season and doesn’t receive much power-play time.
Yanni Gourde scored a goal and added two assists. With 23 points in 32 games, Gourde is having a very under-the-radar rookie season. He’s currently tied as a top-5 scorer among rookies in both goals and points.
Lastly, Erik Johnson’s hit on Vladislav Namestnikov is sure to be reviewed by the league for possible supplemental discipline. Fortunately, Namestnikov was able to return to the game. Johnson was handed a two-minute slashing minor, a five-minute major for boarding, and a game misconduct. Maybe the league will deem that sufficient. But it sure looked dangerous.

The Nashville Predators are on a roll, having just swept the Western Canada stops in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary, having allowed just one goal over those three games. Pekka Rinne did not start the Edmonton game, but he has stopped 57 of 58 shots he has faced over the last two games. Rinne stopped all 32 shots he faced in a 2-0 shutout win over Calgary. I know I was premature in assuming the 35-year-old Rinne was on the way down. But an 18-4-3 record with a 2.25 GAA and .930 SV% has him right in the mix as a top-5 fantasy goalie.
With one of the Preds’ two goals, Kevin Fiala extended his point streak to seven games. Over that stretch he has six goals. We’ve mentioned this before, but the Kyle Turris acquisition has given Fiala’s fantasy value a major boost. By the way, Turris is also on a seven-game point streak. No one has benefitted more from the three-team trade last month than Turris, who has 17 points (4g-13a) in 17 games as a Predator.
In a losing cause, Mark Giordano fired eight shots on goal in 26 minutes of icetime.
The Flames didn’t score any goals on Saturday, so there’s not much else to talk about. But this is an interesting stat as to how much Johnny Gaudreau means to their offense:
Johnny Gaudreau has 39 points on 89 #Flames goals this season (43.8%).
That is the highest percent of team goals involved in this season.
— Sportsnet Stats (@SNstats) December 17, 2017
After Gaudreau, Sean Monahan has 30 points. Then no one even has 20 points.

Mario Lemieux’s five-goal game – the one where he scored even strength, on the power play, shorthanded, on a penalty shot, and on an empty net – was voted the NHL’s greatest moment, announced at the outdoor game. This was quite the statistical feat, if you think about it.

Personally, I thought the Bobby Orr “flying through the air” goal would win, since that image is so memorable. You can view the entire results of the vote at NHL.com’s Greatest Moments Bracket.
