The Alchemy of Forever by Avery Williams

I’ve owned this book for a few years now presumably, but I don’t remember buying it. There’s a Quality Guaranteed sticker, as well as two price stickers (one of which is covered by the other) from Hastings, pricing it at $3.49. I decided to read it, I think, because it sounded interesting and the cover was interesting.

The premise is that, when she was fourteen, Seraphina Ames was stabbed. To save her life, Cyrus, the boy she has a crush on and the apothecary’s son, uses a potion created with alchemy to transfer her soul into a new body, killing that body’s soul in the process. Seraphina and Cyrus escape death by doing this for centuries, but now, over 600 years old, Cyrus has grown cruel and Seraphina wants to escape and die so that she can finally be free of her immortality. After she escapes, she tries to save the life of a young girl who got into a car accident right in front of her, but ends up transferring into that girl’s body instead. Now known as Kailey Morgan, Seraphina needs to decide whether to keep running away or to stay and take over Kailey’s life and get what she never had the chance to receive: the chance to be a teenager. No matter what she chooses, the clock is ticking down for her because Cyrus won’t let her go without a fight. 

Honestly, I didn’t have much hopes for this book going into it. I hadn’t read many good books last year, and at the rate I was going, it seemed like I was probably gonna have the same luck. That’s the trouble with letting your preteen self pick your books, I guess. Anyway, the story was pretty interesting overall, but I thought Seraphina falling in love with Noah was kind of unnecessary. This could be a story about escaping abuse and finding a new home and trying to repent for your wrongs in the past, and at first it was... but then Seraphina got progressively wishy-washier and it almost seemed like she got more reckless and more stupid. She’s going to stay, she’s going to leave, over and over; the idea to stay and fight for her family never even hits her. Maybe that’s a logical thing - she’s protecting herself, and, she thinks, protecting them by not being around them. But she also gets stupider by allowing herself to think that Cyrus actually died at the end. Like, are you serious? You’ve known him for 600 years, you know how much work it took you to get away because of how clever he is, and you think he can just die like that? Or, like, when she followed Cyrus-as-Mr.-Shaw to his apartment - did she really think he wouldn’t know somebody had broken in, that he was on the right track? 

I do like how a lot of the book was written; it flowed very nicely at some parts and there were some lovely quote too, like, "Cyrus, my alchemist love, the one who made magic real, the one who lives for illusion, who says, Yes, the fire only burns violet for you, Seraphina. Cyrus, who grips me so tightly i feel like I'm choking, who made me a killer, who would rather kill me himself than lose me. He's told me so, many times. But after tonight, I'll be gone - and for the first time in hundreds of years, we'll both be alone. " The author did a good job of making Cyrus charming, too; until the line, "...I want to be free of the man who controls me with his fists, his words, and his iron will...", I had been cheering him on to stay with Sera. 

I was surprised that Cyrus and Sera had their own team of immortals. I had thought, for some reason, that they would go through immortality alone, but I guess anybody would eventually want company who understands them. The team itself was pretty interesting, but I thought it was sad that Sera only had one friend on the team, Charlotte. Still, I’m happy that they had people there for them and who understood them. It’s a good idea to know people outside of your partner, after all. 

I was glad that Sera took over Kailey’s life eventually, but I kept wondering about the real Kailey. Kailey, who loved art and wore lilac perfume, who had a secret double life (which we never found out about - who was that guy who knew her in the coffeeshop? What was she doing in that sketchy part of town and why was she going to clubs?). Sera said she would never draw again, but wouldn’t that be suspicious? And Kailey was so, so loved. Wouldn’t dying have been better for her than having her body puppeted around after her death, especially considering her body would be dead in ten years from the strain a new soul taking it over puts on it? Noah said that he would recognize the “spark” that Kailey had anywhere, but did he mean Kailey, really, or Sera? Sera, I’m sure, but isn’t that even sadder for Kailey? Nobody in the world, except for maybe two people, knows that she’s actually dead. I’m glad that Sera found a home, but I mourn for Kailey, who lost hers. 

The author seems to put emphasis on mothers and motherly love in the book, often forgetting about fathers. Sera sees her mother’s spirit telling her to stay and take over a new life. Mrs. Morgan is completely loving. But what about Sera’s dad? What about Mr. Morgan? Didn’t they love their daughters just as much as their wives did?

“Manipulating” was a word that was thrown around a lot. Sera thought Kailey was manipulative for not wanting her friends to date her brother, which is such a stupid take to me. Kailey was setting a boundary and protecting herself so that nothing awkward could happen between her and her friends and her brother. Why is that manipulative? If you want manipulation, then look at Cyrus and his treatment of people, and compare that to Kailey. It’s not the same. 

The diversity in this book wasn’t very high, but there were two black side characters, at least, and instead of calling something a (g-slur) caravan, the author wrote Romany caravan, which I appreciate. It would be nice if more characters of color would be in the series next. 

I thought it would have been interesting if, trying to get Cyrus off her tail, Sera telling him that Nicole had been acting strange had in turn gotten Nicole killed or kidnapped by Cyrus or something, and I think that could’ve been a really cool turn in the story, having the real Sera save Nicole and Nicole learning the truth. She and Sera could theoretically become friends, Nicole could mourn the loss of Kailey... it could have been interesting. Something else that could have been interesting is if Sera would have been questioned by the police, assuming Cyrus hadn’t cleared up his evidence-covered room, and she said that “Mr. Shaw” was stalking her, rather than her being his killer. It would have looked just as plausible, and she would have a good amount of deniability, considering she’s spoken to at least two people about how uncomfortable she was around him. 

I know Sera never got to revel in her youth, but it still feels weird to me that she’s dating a teenager now. I get that, like, in the body she’s in now, she couldn’t date, say, an elderly person, or even someone in their 40s or whatever, but it just feels uncomfortable that, at over 600 years old, she’s dating someone so much younger than her. The only way I can rationalize it is by saying that the soul transference makes the mind stay relatively young forever, which I could almost believe if not for the fact that Sera doesn’t act or think like a 14 year old (the age she died for the first time). 

The end of the book wrapped up too quickly. I know it was setting up a series, but still. And I wish it had ended differently, too - she knows that Cyrus is alive because “Noah” played the word “alchemy” in words with friends. That could be coincidental. I wanted more concrete proof. But, again, she was awfully stupid in believing that Cyrus had died, anyway, so, whatever. Maybe the series should end with her tracking down all the immortals and killing them and freeing their spirits. Wouldn’t that be nice? Lol. 

Overall, it was a pretty good book. I’ll keep it, I think. 3.5/5, maybe 4/5 but probably not, because the slow stupidification of Sera.
