With Redwings constantly calling over my garden while dinner was in the oven, I used my thermal imager to try to spot some and get an idea of flock size — I did see a few but it was a challenge.
I was glad I tried, though, as I clocked a flock of 20 goose-sized birds flying west, which promptly called, identifying them as Brent Geese! I'm just three streets back from the sea, but this was a very welcome garden tick.

‘Vismig’ (visible bird migration), or sometimes called sky-watching, involves observing overhead diurnal migration and can be carried out from any particular location with a good view of the sky ... Nocturnal flight call (NFC) recording ... involves the use of sound-recording equipment to capture the flight calls of migrating birds, then detecting and identifying the call signatures using computer software. Migrating birds will often fly over the British Isle on a broad front and therefore you really do not need to live on the coast or on a migration flyway to give nocmig a go.

Presentes Densos: A soundcamp in #Reveil9
Tumblr media
Tomorrow I'm heading back to Valencia to rejoin the Presentes Densos work group. This Saturday we're setting up a soundcamp in Tancat de Mília, in the Albufera Natural Park. Our soundcamp will remain active all night long, and will welcome the Dawn Chorus in the early hours of Sunday morning.
With this soundcamp, we are joining this year's Reveil 9 event, organized by SoundCamp, which will take place over this weekend. Coinciding with World Dawn Chorus Day (traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday of May), this edition of Reveil will start at 05:30 UTC+1 tomorrow morning, and will continue until 14:00 UTC+1 on, Sunday, offering nearly two days of continuous broadcast: a sound wave of dawn choruses circulating the globe.
Along the way, the Reveil 2022 broadcast will include streams from soundcamps all over the planet, and the event will also include talks and workshops. While the emphasis is on the Dawn Chorus, Reveil usually encompasses all sorts of daybreak sounds - from bird colonies to urban soundscape, often including sonic experiments. Unlike previous editions, on this occasion SoundCamp will also have at its disposal PITCH, a portable auditorium designed and built specifically for this event by Public Works and Michael Speers in Rotherithe. This auditorium will operate as a place of listening, where sounds from dawn choruses from all over the world will flock.

At Tancat de Mília, we will be working in collaboration with the IVAM team, and also with Javier Jiménez Romo (who's in charge of the Tancat de Mília), and also with Vicent Llorens and Bosco Dies from Fundació Assut and the very interesting Nocmig Albufera project. We will set up drop rigs for remote recording in the area, conduct listening and field recording practices, and we'll also engage in night-time soundwalking. Finally, at daybreak, we will record and stream the Dawn Chorus, joining the Reveil 9 programme.
This will be my final engagement with the Presentes Densos project. Documentation of this year's edition of the seminar can be found here, as well as information about further events in the programme.
The Reveil 9 stream can be followed here, and the full programme can be found over here.
