Miki will release her second photobook, "Daydream".

Miki Nonaka's second photo book "daydream" is set to be released on October 7, 2023, on her 24th birthday. This work showcases her dedication in pursuit of beauty, including body toning. Blessed with good weather, the book features scenes of her energetically running under clear skies, playing basketball while feeling the Ryukyu wind, and swimming in a lit-up night pool. The attention to detail, such as costumes and makeup, provides new discoveries each time you look at it.

Morning Musume have been a self-conscious bunch, constantly working to brush up their flaws, but rarely does their self-evaluation come in comparison to someone else. Last time may have been that brief scene in “Nanchatte Renai” in 2009 when they stared out the window and wondered if anyone out there is smiling for real. That fixation about a life of another becomes a central obsession in “Sexy Cat No Enzetsu” as the song invests its time talking about another subject as much as the idols themselves.

The emotion the idols feel towards that subject, the titular Sexy Cat in question, doesn’t appear so straightforward. Personifying the song’s aloof, slightly flirty sax riff, the lifestyle of the Sexy Cat is at odds with the philosophy often sung by post-Colorful-era Morning Musume: “The girl who isn’t serious about trying,” they sum up this woman, who can care less about matters outside of herself. At times, they seem to look down on her and her choices: “If I can join the long line and be happy/ I would start lining up top of the morning,” they sing as though they see their lives as too shallow and simplistic.

And yet, Morning Musume admit to how the Sexy Cat can live in a way that they cannot. The group seem to even look up to them in admiration as they realize they can’t lead their lives with this unique pureness to everything. They think too much and work too hard, and they see that time keeps passing without them feeling too fulfilled about particularly anything -- a workaholic mindset that remains a constant for the Numeral era. “You can win if you give it your all/ All you have to do is give it your all, right,” they stubbornly sing with a hint of skepticism about the very message they’ve been reiterating for years.

“Sexy Cat No Enzetsu” reflects Morning Musume’s bittersweet fantasy about giving up this lifestyle of all work and trade it for a night of just play. While the sax fluffs up the song, it doesn’t feel wholly glamorous as, say, the disco pomp of “Utakata Saturday Night”; it sounds slightly deflated and shaded with a bit of melancholy. The chorus finds the idol at their most free, ready to get lost deep in their daydreams: “if I can be a Sexy Cat/ I want to fool around late into the night.” Fantasy is key: as barred by life’s circumstances as well as their own stubbornness, “Sexy Cat No Enzetsu” reminds that this just a series of what-ifs that Morning Musume ultimately can’t achieve.
