He's a Sad Boi

Dude had lost all his friends! But it gave him the motivation to break away and be better. Did he believe he was worth having the second chance? Idk, maybe, but he believed in Roxas and Xion.

He had this vague sense of what it was like to have a heart but he would push it aside. Like Roxas would ask about what it'd be like to have a heart and that would trigger the feelings but he had no grasp on them.

It was against his better judgement to be friends with Roxas and Xion and to really care about them

It was essentially his choice to become a Nobody. He and Saix willingly took part in Ansem's experiments. Those two had no choice and we're subjected to the fate decided for them and Axel wasn't able to save them.

He had also decided he was going to save Saix. It wasn't last minute during the battles. He was going to save Saix. And if possible he is going to save the unnamed girl.

He'll help save Sora.

He came back after he had willingly sacrificed himself. He refuses to lose. He wanted to be a keyblade weilder because he won't feel helpless or hopeless ever again.

Fushimi

We know that the way he left Homra and treated Yata was just easier for him. I know his "betrayal" of Scepter 4 was for show, to convince everyone.

However! It hurt him. He willingly went along with it and probably helped come up with the plan but he didn't expect it to hurt.

Both Munakata's words and being labeled a traitor AGAIN.

He had never really been a traitor. Even betraying Yata wasn't about betraying Yata, he was protecting himself the only way he knew how.

Baby boy has such low emotional intelligence and terrible coping skills.

But even if it hurt him and even though he trusted Munakata to save him... part of Fushimi had a bit of doubt. He's still Fushimi after all.

And that part of him with doubt was comforted by the thought that everyone would think of him as a traitor. It's easiest if people hate him. He'd miss them, be sad that he didn't see them, but nobody needs to miss him.

Shizuo

I have a really vague aroace headcanon for him. I've just been making characters aroace lately and for Shizuo I think that's a rather sad/angsty pipeline to acceptance and understanding it doesn't affect his worth as a person.

Separate from that. This is more of an AU idea.

Izaya wasn't so involved with people prior to middle school? I think? He was more withdrawn.

So say they went to the same elementary school instead of Shinra. Maybe Shizuo wouldn't have hated Izaya at first sight. Maybe Izaya didn't have his weird fucked up philosophy of humanity. Maybe they could have been acquaintances even for a short time.

Say they'd be in the same room, like Izaya's just in the library and Shizuo goes there to cool down and avoid people talking about him.

He just looks at Izaya and thinks he looks sad for some reason. Izaya probably just had some melancholy face by default, but Shizuo didn't know that.

So he just keeps glancing at him, wanting to say something but thinking it's better not to. Maybe he's already got some worry about how people are talking about him.

He's embarrassed when Izaya asks if there's something on his face.

They go to different middle schools but are at the same highschool and Izaya's different. Shizuo had missed him but he's different. Suddenly Izaya thinks he's a monster and he looks at Izaya and hates him.

It's the usual canon nonsense, but deep down Shizuo is hurt and doesn't know what to do.

Yukine

I know it's already canon but I just REALLY LIKE that he'd sacrifice himself for Yato and Hiyori and that he's scared of Hiyori forgetting him.

He was such a brat but was able to accept things. He cares about more than just Yato and Hiyori. Because of losing his life so young, even if he accepted it, he still hates things that are unfair.

He has a grudge against Bishimon for how she neglected so many of her shinki, but in order not to blight Yato he talks to him about it.

Like he doesn't want to be mad but for awhile it just rubs him the wrong way and he doesn't know what to do.

If it came down to it and Hiyori's life was truly in danger by being tied to the far shore he'd lose it

He'd be mad at Hiyori for risking her life so much, as if she didn't care about it. He loves that she cares so much, but she should value her life more. Her getting hurt because of him is worse than her forgetting.

He'd decide that they have to cut ties and would only accept parting if it was only between the three of them.

Even Yato would be depressed for days, weeks, maybe longer.

He'd still acknowledge when Yato is being horrible but he'd be defensive for awhile. Insulting the god that Hiyori had believed in, who she had decided was worth his own shrine and built it herself was insulting Hiyori too and no one has the right to do that.

I mean, honestly they are all sad bois.

Noragami reread: Volume 1 & 2 thoughts

So it begins, my final reread before the end.

It really is so interesting how the first chapter has fuck all to do with the rest of the manga. Yato using the same call to Hanki as he would to name a shinki, Mutsumi creating something like an ayakashi that never comes up again, the fact that she herself never makes another appearance, and of course the most important question: why Yato was looting toilet paper if gods don't poop. I'm sure this is because it was a pilot of sorts and Adachitoka was still figuring stuff out, but it's interesting.

And on that note, remember when ayakashi were plot relevant? It's not really a complaint--I think there were more important things to cover--but they seem to gradually be phased out of the story and otherwise transformed. Same goes for borderlines and blight.

I forgot Yato told Hiyori "under normal circumstances, I'd love to have you as my shinki" IN CHAPTER GODDAMN TWO. No further comment.

Still get full body chills when Yato names Yukine, especially ever since we found out Yukine's past...it still devastates me to know he's been carrying that this whole time.

And when Yato first reverts Yukine, he offers him his jacket and tells him "you have nothing to be afraid of anymore." He's not being funny, he's genuinely trying to reassure him. It goes poorly, but he still cared. He always cared. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA [thrashing]

The last thing I wanna mention from this volume is that I thought Yukine lived quite far from Hiyori, but I guess it was roughly in the same city. It's so sad to think about these two separate stories that never converged until decades later.

Moving on to volume 2, it's really apparent with every reread that even though the ideas keep changing, the themes stay constant. There are so many lines of what could ostensibly be foreshadowing but really they're more reflections of the themes. To pick a random example, when Hiyori is talking about Yato's distaste of suicidal people, she says her father (a doctor) would never give up on a person's life. This can be tied to the situation happening at the time--Yato appears to be acting selfish by refusing to help--but it also has a double meaning showing how he, in the present, will become someone who would never give up on Hiyori's life. Yall mind if I cry.

Not much else from this volume, but I did have a few short Discord reactions to share from both:

Unwanted child

Despite appearances, the heroes in Noragami do not undergo any fundamental change of character, more than that, they change from what angle we, as readers, are allowed to look at them. But if there's a character that really changes profoundly and irreversibly, it's Mizuchi.

 Not because she wants to, but because she is forced to. When she is introduced to us at the end of the second volume, in her funeral kimono, with a ghost crown, her pale skin covered with dozens of names, she is disturbing and mysterious.

 The kimono, the crown and the names are like thick layers of paint through which nothing else can be seen. Always so calm, always smiling, Yato says about her the moment he releases her and the first crack appears on her perfect paint.

When she receives the name from him,  long ago, ages ago, hundreds of years ago, she has no layers on her. She is just Mizuchi, a good girl, obedient to  father, quiet and docile.

If it could be her choice, if she was ever allowed to choose, she would never want any of those layers.

But she can't vote. The father extols her qualities as a shinki, speaks highly of her future, and gives her to Yato to use. As a weapon, as a thing.

But then, when father praises them, Mizuchi is smiling again. Having names is a good thing because it makes her useful to  father. So Mizuchi collects name after name to make father happy.

But it's never enough, it's never good enough. When she later tells Yukine that she collected her names because she felt that something was missing, that something was always missing, she was talking about parental love.

Father is the only one she has ever truly served.

What she tells Yukine, after she comes to him crying, stripped of her names, about herself, about her past, is theater. As fake as her clear skin, carefully chosen words to make an impression and unlock Yukine's heart. It will work out, everything will turn out according to plan, but Nora is no longer perfectly calm and smiling, because she has recognized something that has been denied her until now. Treating her like a living human being, Yukine opens her up to a space where children play, learn, where people are kind to each other without asking for anything in return. In which the smile on the face is an expression of real feelings, not a false compliment. And we, at the end of the day, see Nora very lonely and pensive.

 Another crack is slowly appearing in the paint layer.

Then when father leaves her kneeling in the middle of the sidewalk without responding, the crack widens and a good chunk falls off. The girl stabbing her ghostly crown with desperate rage is more human, more emotional, more alive than she has been in centuries.

Mizuchi loses his layers and begins to discover who he really is. She shows compassion, gratitude, empathy, something she hasn't done in a very long time and who knows if ever. We find out what Mizuchi would be like if she was allowed to experience a normal life. What would she be, without her father's influence.

And then father calls her to fight for him and she obeys him because her father is everything to her, without him she is surrounded by darkness. Even though at the end of the fight she loses all her names, for real this time, except for one, even though father screams at her and she suffers, she finds the strength to tell father how much she loves him. 

Nora is gone. No more funeral kimono, no ghost crown, gone are the signs covering the skin. Only Mizuchi remains. Open, emotional, expressing her feelings. She wants to be not just a good girl, but his daughter. This is supposed to be her true personality, the one she chose for herself, instead of the layers that were forced on her and she lost them.

But she is not and never will be, because she is not a beloved daughter, not a real little girl, just an aborted child, as her father throws her in the face. If he stabbed her in the heart, he couldn't hurt more. 

Mizuchi can't go back to who she was and can't be what she dreamed of. She is at a dead end from which she will have to find some other way. Maybe she will succeed, through Yukine, who showed her that she can enjoy life, through Hiyori, who proved to her that people can take her seriously, through her brother, who protects her, despite everything that happened between them .

 But she will have to find that way herself

Noragami's final chapter: "With the god in the tracksuit"

Somehow, I held it together until I got to the final colour page. I saw Adachitoka's beautiful art and the chapter's name...and I started to cry.

I've been following Noragami for over a decade. Of course I'm sad that it's over. But I'm also so grateful that we got an ending at all. Thank you so much, Adachitoka.

Thoughts on the chapter

I wish more time was given to wrap up the story, but I'm good with what we got. Some highlights for me:

Yato didn't disappear! He kind of lives on as a meme? Which is not out of character, but funny considering how serious his situation was made out to be. I was really worried when I saw his hands fading on the final volume cover.

Yukine stayed by Yato's side and wants to be like his sister. He's grown so much :')

Hiyori returned to her life and became a doctor! Good for her

Nora genuinely smiling (what should we call her? Nora doesn't seem correct)

Coophone appearance! I do feel a bit bad for Fujisaki haha

The gods and their shinki still gather at Suzuha's tree every year

Even though Yato cut his ties with Hiyori, she remembered him again. That page where she saw his reflection in the water is my favourite <3

The colour page with everyone happy together, and Hiyori looking at their reflections in the puddle. Does it symbolize that she's more grounded now? That her window into the far shore is more fleeting? Not sure. I like the recurring motif and I'm sure it means something

The title of the chapter seems to be a callback to the first chapter...made me think about how it all began (hence the waterworks)
