Bastad MD QF: Rafael Nadal/Casper Ruud [WC] def. Theo Arribage/Roman Safiullin 6-4, 3-6, [12-10] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 BeIN Sports ID
T. Arribage/Roman absorbed Ruudal's pace steadily in the second set, and their levels clashed in the match tie-break, where it came down to a few shots. The latter's tidy point construction and pace helped them to nail the match tie-breaker, ultimately going after Roman's more vulnerable stroked toward the end as the wild cards tried to remain consistent in their range. Even outside of the match tie-breaker, Ruudal converted 66% of their 3 break points as they maximized their chances through their shot placement finish compared to T. Arribage/Roman's 50% break point conversion rate out of their 4 chances to break.
Besides, it appeared that both pairs had distinct service game strengths. Landing 72% of their first serves, T. Arribage/Roman won 76% of their first serve points even though both pairs scored an ace, 8% more than Ruudal as their level-raise in the second set, as well as the match tie-break. However, even though both players double-faulted four times, Ruudal had more reliable second serves as they won 65% of their second serve points, 36% more than T. Arribage/Roman as the match progressed.
In the semifinals, Ruudal will face the winner between Pavel Kotov/Piotr Matuszewski and third seeds Orlando Luz/Marcelo Zormann. In a similar manner to this match, this would test their point construction and their balance of power in general, with shot placement and pacing could also be as crucial as this quarterfinal match. Should be another fun match to look forward to!

❌️ Alexander lost his QF match in Båstad against Rublev 2-6 3-6
Tumblr media
Sadly, after a clinical performance from Alexander in the previous round, his level just wasn't there in today's match 😔 Between his serve not firing like normal, a lot of unforced errors at the baseline and at the net, he was unable to ever really find his rhythm in the match, and his run in Båstad sadly stops here.
Alexander started strong, not stopping a point on serve for his first two service games, but then an unfortunate game on his serve at 2-3 led to him facing two break points. One of them he was able to save, but an untimely double fault meant that he was then broken, giving Rublev a 4-2 lead. Sadly, Alexander was not able to regain his focus, with his next service game at 5-2 being even more error-filled, causing him to lose the set on a double break 6-2.
The second set was very similar, except in this set, Alexander obtained two break points at 1-1, his first of the match. Sadly though, he was unable to convert them, and Rublev held serve for 2-1. Both players continued to hold serve until 4-3 to Rublev, when another unfortunate game resulted in Alexander being broken for 5-3, allowing Rublev to serve out the match 6-2 6-3.
As sad as it is seeing Alexander lose again, he did still obtain two solid wins in Båstad, so though he was unable to find his form today, there are still positives about his run here. Hopefully he can rest well now and regroup before he begins preparations for his next tournament, which is not only in his home country, but his home city too 🖤
➡️ Onto Hamburg.

Bastad MD R1: Rafael Nadal/Casper Ruud [WC] def. Guido Andreozzi/Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela 6-1, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 Tennis TV
Ruudal turned out to dominate from the start thanks to their groundstrokes, where hitting hard outrallied G. Andreozzi/M.A. Reyes-Varela until the latter lacked some finishing options. Even if they tried to step up in the second set, Ruudal got their footing back from their anticipative returns, questioning the balance of the second seeds as the match progressed. As a result, G. Andreozzi/M.A. Reyes-Varela could only convert 20% of their set points in the middle of the second set, while Ruudal had twice more break points (50%) with 40% of the break points being converted.
Besides, Ruudal turned out to have a more consistent service game. Landing 67% of their first serves, the wild card scored twice more aces than G. Andreozzi/M.A. Reyes-Varela (4 to 2), where they won 72% of their first serve points to manage several hiccups in between. In contrast, the second seeds had more vulnerable second serves since they only won 50% of their second serve points, 6% more than Ruudal as this became one of their most vulnerable shots.
In the next round, Ruudal will face the winner between Theo Arribage/Roman Safiullin and Mariano Navone/Cameron Norrie, which will be played tomorrow (local time). While this could be a chaotic match at their best, this will test their point construction, as well as their balance of power, taking into account how baseline-oriented the pairs can be and how will they manage their net game to follow up. It could be tricky, but it would also be an exciting watch!

🎤 R2 on-court interview following his win over Monteiro:
Tumblr media
Interviewer: So, Sascha Zverev, it didn't take long for you to get back in the clay shape, did it?
Alexander: (Laughs) Today, it didn't; two days ago, it did. But… no, I mean, I'm happy to be playing the way I'm playing, I think today was excellent match, I think it was a much higher level than two days ago, but… (laughs), yeah, I don't know what to say to this question, to be honest. But it's great to be here, it's great to play, and I'm happy to be in the quarter-finals (smiles).
Interviewer: Is it good for you, or is it important to save the energy, just have a match that's one hour, looking at the draw and seeing what's next for you?
Alexander: Yeah, I mean looking at my physical trainer, I think we're gonna go run about 10km on the beach now (the audience laughs), because, I mean, it's still early, we have nothing else to do until the evening; the night club only opens at 11pm, so (the audience cheers, Alexander smiles), you know, what am I gonna do until then?
Interviewer: Thank you very much, and congratulations, Sascha Zverev.
Alexander: Thank you.
❤️ Another lovely on-court interview yesterday, and it's so nice to see him smiling and feeling content with his level of tennis right now. I hope he can carry this positivity and incredible level into his quarter-final match later today. Let's go, Alexander 🔥
