👆 geodetic construction enabled it to withstand damage that would have downed most aircraft and it was well liked by its crews. Almost 11,500 were produced, more than any other British bomber.
Wellingtons saw use with Bomber Command from the first day of the war, though they were quickly moved from daylight ‘ops’ after heavy losses. The aircraft soon became the standard RAF bomber, outlasting the Whitley and Hampden and serving alongside 4-engined ‘heavies’. A Wellington dropped the RAF’s first 4,000lb bomb in a raid on Emden in April 1941. As late as May 1942, Wellingtons made up half of the 1,000 aircraft assembled for Operation Millennium against Cologne. By the end of that year, however, the type was rapidly being replaced and its last major raid with Bomber Command was in October 1943.
Wellingtons flying from bases in Egypt and Malta played a key role in disrupting Axis supply lines. One lesser known aspect of this was their use as torpedo bombers against convoys to North Africa. After the Allied landings in Italy, ‘Wimpys’ continued to operate from bases there until early 1945. In the Far East, Wellingtons operating from India against Burma were the first RAF long range bombers to arrive in the theatre.
The type was also important to Coastal Command operations over the Bay of Biscay. Previously, U-Boats had been able to travel surfaced by night with little fear of attack, but Wellingtons changed that. Equipped with ASV radar and the new Leigh Light, they surprised many unwary submarines. The first confirmed kill was U-502, sunk with its entire crew on 5th July 1942. As time went on, many U-Boat commanders preferred to take their chances on the surface during the day, making their boats more vulnerable.
Wellingtons were also used as transports and trainers, serving into the 1950s. But there were several more ‘exotic’ variants. The DWI carried a large hoop to detonate magnetic mines. The Mark VI was a pressurised, high-altitude pathfinder, but wasn’t used operationally. There was an experimental version equipped with a rotating radar array to detect Heinkel 111s carrying V-1s and direct fighters to their position. Wellingtons were even used as testbeds for early jet engines, mounted in the rear fuselage.

Azerbaijan’s role in multipolarity was elaborated on in detail here, but it can be summarized as facilitating Eurasian integration via its geostrategic position at the crossroads of north-south and east-west trade. It’s the first-mentioned that most directly concerns Russia due to their cooperation on the North-South Transport Corridor (NSTC) that connects it to India via Iran. Putin and Aliyev accordingly referenced their talks about this megaproject during the press conference that followed their meeting.
