Out for a paddle with grandson George yesterday, met this wonderful Northumberian fisherman lifting his pots. Not only did he say hello, but took time to show us his catch, young lobsters, codlings, velvet crabs, all of which were returned. He did catch a lobster of the right age and size for keeping. He also gave us a couple of nice fresh Codling to take with us. 60 years on the Northumberland coastline and still out working. Made me think that in our Social Media driven, 24hr News, instant gratification world, we laud, praise and adulate the wrong people in our world today. Continuing from the previous, post I mentioned in the Book of Days that I was trying to draw everyday but had found myself increasingly crushed by a year of lockdown. I was desperate to be out of the urban environment and suddenly @redroom95 had phoned me with Phil’s amazing offer to drive me up to beautiful Seahouses with my sketchbook and kit and drop me at his family caravan on my own for a few days. It completely rescued my year and my feeling of being an artist switched back on again immediately with rugged beach to myself and time to just draw. In that book I had made a sequence of very rapid drawings and between them I also took boards and canvases and this larger scale sketchbook, The Book of Lamentations which continues with these. The first page is the Powder House as a close up drawing on board above a longer panorama on canvas. The second was a Carandache drawing of the little lighthouse followed by another view of the Powder House. It reminded me of a little hermitage for some Saint who had eschewed human company. Next was a cast iron grid for some sort of pipe outlet on the beach which was beautifully ugly with some random paint and a pano photo of the view. Following this are two more photos of the harbour at sunset and finally a gap between houses in the village looking down to the sea and a drawing of Phil’a favourite pub to thank him for driving me there.
