Azuma Makoto’s Temporary Sculptures Freeze Hundreds of Flowers on a Snow-Coated Lake On a frozen lake in the Notsuke Peninsula, a tendril of land that juts out from Hokkaido’s east coast, acclaimed floral artist Azuma Makoto (previously) has constructed the third botanical sculpture in an ongoing series called Frozen Flowers. The first edition was composed in this same location in 2019 and again in 2021, and every year, the conditions have been a little bit different. The artist is interested in how variables like temperature, wind, or snowfall can alter the surrounding environment and make every version unique. More Do stories and artists like this matter to you? The town of Betsukai sits on the picturesque Notsuke Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island.
Tumblr media
Facing the Sea of Okhotsk, Betsukai is blessed with an abundance of seasonal seafood, such as the large, sweet Notsuke scallops for which the region is known. When looking for the best meal in town, the locals all know to head to a cozy eatery called Suiraku Maruta.

A Sandy Haven in Japan On the eastern shore of Hokkaido, a hook-shaped spit juts into the Nemuro Strait. The 28-kilometer-long (17-mile-long) feature, Notsuke Peninsula, is one of the largest sand spits in Japan. The pair of Landsat images above shows the peninsula in the summer (top) and winter (lower). In the summer image, patches of sea grass and kelp (green) are visible in the shallow waters of Notsuke Bay, an area mostly enclosed by the peninsula where the water depth generally averages less than 1 meter (3 feet). The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired the summer image on July 2, 2022; the same sensor captured the winter image on December 27, 2022. The sheltered waters of the bay serve as a key habitat, food source, and nursery for a variety of sea life, including Hokkai shrimp, salmon, and migratory waterbirds. To avoid damaging the seagrass and clogging the propellors of motorized boats, local fishermen instead use traditional sailboats called Utasebune to harvest shrimp. As seen in the winter image, the bay’s shallow waters freeze over during the coldest months of winter, creating a vast expanse of frozen water known locally as an “ice horizon.” The spit is made up mostly of sand and sediment that is carried by the Shibetsu River and then transported south by longshore currents along the Nemuro Strait. However, sediment has been in short supply in recent decades due to the construction of a port in Shibetsu that blocks some of the sediment from moving south. Regular dredging, the construction of groin structures to prevent erosion, and a variety of beach nourishment projects have helped Notsuke Peninsula remain intact. However, Landsat satellite images show the peninsula narrowing in some areas in recent decades in the face of ongoing wave action and erosion, sea level rise, and the gradual subsidence of the landscape. Indeed, salty water encroaching on forested patches of the peninsula has left dying ghost forests in areas such as Narawara and Todowara. NASA Earth Observatory images by Wanmei Liang, using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey. Story by Adam Voiland.

Art & Design: Azuma Makoto’s Temporary Sculptures Freeze Hundreds of Flowers on a Snow-Coated Lake

On a frozen lake in the Notsuke Peninsula, a tendril of land that juts out from Hokkaido’s east coast, acclaimed floral artist Azuma Makoto (previously) has constructed the third botanical sculpture in an ongoing series called Frozen Flowers. The first edition was composed in this same location in 2019 and again in 2021, and every year, the conditions have been a little bit different. The artist is interested in how variables like temperature, wind, or snowfall can alter the surrounding environment and make every version unique.
Tumblr media
An important facet of Makoto’s practice is working alongside and adapting to nature and striking a collaborative balance so that he’s neither trying to control it nor controlled by it. Arranged on a scaffold and surrounded by a field of snow, bunches of flowers and foliage in a range of colors and textures are doused with water before they solidify into thousands of icicles. The artist and a team of assistants worked through the night, waiting until temperatures were at their lowest so that the ice would form quickly. The following morning, the sun revealed the finished composition, and by design, ultimately melted it.
Tumblr media
Through the seasons, Makoto sees how the area transforms and over time has witnessed the effects of climate change on the peninsula. He aims to continue installing new versions of the icy blooms for years to come in order to document the ever-evolving environment. Find more of his work on his website and on Instagram.

Flora and Sylva
Today we explore the world of contemporary floral arranging with the inventive Flower Art Makato Azuma translated from Japanese by Pamela Miki, published by Thames & Hudson in London and New York in 2020.
Makoto Azuma is a Japanese flower artist and botanical sculptor. He co-founded JARDINS des FLEURS in 2002, a floral haute couture boutique that is currently located in the Minamiaoyama neighborhood in Tokyo.  In 2005, Makato Azuma started to create “botanical sculptures,” and began showing in many exhibitions around the world. In 2009, he launched the experimental botanical lab Azuma Makoto Kaju Kenkyujo (AMKK). Flower Art Makato Azuma notes: “his flower art has appeared in museums, galleries and public spaces all over the world. In recent years, Azuma has focused on projects that explore the connections between human beings and flowers. He continues to seek out the beauty of plants from his own distinctive point of view.”
Some examples of Makato Azuma’s work that we are showing today are:
1. In Bloom #4: Exobiotanica II – Botanical Space Flight from August 2017. In the series flowers are arranged in situations that would be impossible in nature. Plants that were launched into the stratosphere and a medium-format mirrorless camera was used to capture change and movement in flowers.
2. Flower Sculpture, Mexico City in vases at the Alameda Central Park for a public art commission in October 2013.
3. Other Ideas / Outras Ideias. Oi Futuro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. November 2017.
4. Bottle Flower 2017: Flowers that had been used in various displays were placed in glass jars filled with water and decayed attractively over a period of two weeks, in what Azuma described as their ‘second life.’
5. Botanical Sculpture #7: Dynamite. Tokyo, April 2016.
6. In Bloom #2: Dagat & Bulaklak. Hinoba-an, Negros Islands, Phillipines. February 2015.
7. Frozen Flowers. Bekkai-cho, Notsuke Peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan. February 2018.
8. Botanical Sculpture: Sequía y Sombra (Drought and Shadow). Jujuy, Argentina. April 2018.
9. Flower Shop, ‘Kibou.’ An ongoing project that involves setting up temporary mobile flower stands in different parts of the world. It transcends national, cultural, ethnic, and language barriers, delivering flowers into people’s hands in the name of kibou (hope). The series has currently taken place in Fukushima, Japan, Germany, Congo, Algeria, India, Uruguay, and Argentina.
10. Botanical Sculpture: Smile x 1,000. Bangkok, Thailand. July 2018.

Notsuke Peninsula
See the natural beauty of Notsuke Peninsula in Hokkaido and how it offers some fantastic wildlife viewing!
A lesser-visited area in the east coast of Hokkaido proves to be one of the more eventful parts of our trip to Japan.
Notsuke Peninsula is a small strip of land that juts out for about 28km from the east coast of Hokkaido prefecture—but don’t let its size fool you. The Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center situated about 15km from the mainland is a popular destination for tourists but if you ask me,…
