Penrith: 2023 NRL Premiers
Tumblr media
Panthers superstar Nathan Cleary has produced the finest performance of his career to lead the premiers to a remarkable 26-24 triumph over the Broncos in an epic decider at Accor Stadium.
Trailing by 16 points after an Ezra Mam hat-trick had put the Broncos on track for their first title in 17 years, Cleary took the game by the scruff of the neck to ensure the Panthers would emulate the Eels of 1981-82-83 with a three-peat.
Cleary put Moses Leota over for a try with 17 minutes to play and then came up with a 40-20 before scoring the final try in the 77th minute to leave the Broncos shellshocked and the Panthers faithful in raptures.
The champion No.7 then capped his night by becoming just the third player to win the Clive Churchill Medal for a second time, joining Brad Clyde and Billy Slater in that exclusive club.
In a frantic opening it was Broncos centre Herbie Farnworth coming up with an early error to hand the Panthers field position but a brilliant bomb defusal by Kotoni Staggs helped his team come away.
Broncos hooker Billy Walters then produced a mammoth 40-20 kick out of dummy half but the opportunity was lost when the ball was spun left and Jesse Arthars slipped and went into touch.
When Selwyn Cobbo dropped the ball deep in his own territory the Broncos again found themselves under the pump but their defence again stood strong until a poor play-the-ball by Staggs in the 16th minute invited the Panthers into the red zone and first points followed in bizarre fashion.
A short dropout by Adam Reynolds in the 18th minute was batted back by Farnworth and rather than his Broncos teammates collecting the ball it was Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny who pounced for his first try of the season. Stephen Crichton converted to give the premiers a 6-0 lead.
When Reece Walsh was caught in goal and Reynolds' dropout failed to go 10 metres, the Panthers extended their lead to 8-0 courtesy of a Cleary penalty goal.
Come the 39th minute and the Broncos struck back when Thomas Flegler powered over from close range having only returned to the field three minutes after passing a head injury assessment. Reynolds converted to make the half-time score 8-6 to the Panthers.
On the back of a couple of enormous charges from Flegler the Broncos made the ideal start to the second half when Mam split the Panthers open and raced 50 metres to score wide out. Reynolds converted to give the Broncos a 12-8 lead.
After Panthers five-eighth Jarome Luai left the field holding his shoulder in the 52nd minute the Broncos extended their lead through a second try for Mam, who put some fancy footwork on Isaah Yeo and Cleary and raced away to make it 18-8 to Kevin Walters' men.
Two minutes later Mam had a hat-trick after Walsh sliced through and found the No.6 in support as the Broncos turned the game on its head with a stunning burst.
Trailing by 16 points the Panthers hit back when Cleary found a hole and set up Leota for a try in the 63rd minute before the champion No.7 came up with a 40-20 to set up another opportunity but a superb last-ditch tackle by Kobe Hetherington on Leota kept Brisbane's line intact.
A mistake by Pat Carrigan then opened the door for the Panthers again and Crichton made it four tries in four consecutive grand finals and the premiers were back in business, trailing 24-20.
When Reynolds put a dropout out on the full in the 72nd minute the Panthers had a shot at levelling up but Cobbo plucked a Crichton kick out of the air and the danger was averted.
With the crowd of 81,947 at fever pitch the Panthers remarkably hit the front 26-24 when Cleary took the line on from 10 metres out and put the ball down for the four-pointer that capped the greatest night of his career.
The Panthers' comeback from 16 points down was the biggest in grand final history, eclipsing the Storm's effort to come from 14-0 down to win the 1999 decider against the Dragons.
Match Snapshot Broncos prop Thomas Flegler left the field in the 23rd minute for a HIA which he passed and returned to the field in the 36th minute. Panthers hooker Mitch Kenny's first-half try was just the second of his 83-game career. Broncos prop Payne Haas had six runs for 70 metres and made 22 tackles in a powerhouse opening stint of 36 minutes. Panthers prop James Fisher-Harris had 11 runs for 95 metres and broke six tackles in his opening 33-minute stint. He finished with 153 metres and eight tackle breaks. The Panthers completed 18 of 19 sets in the opening half compared to 13 of 21 by the Broncos. The champions finished the night with an incredible 37 of 38 sets completed at 97 per cent.
Panthers fullback Dylan Edwards was immense with 296 running metres and six tackle breaks. Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs played his 100th NRL game. Panthers skipper Isaah Yeo left the field in the 57th minute for a HIA and was followed by back-rower Scott Sorensen in the 59th minute. Both men passed and were able to return. Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary produced a 40-20 kick in the 65th minute. Panthers centre Stephen Crichton has scored a try in four consecutive grand finals. Broncos centre Herbie Farnworth ran for 179 metres and had eight tackle breaks. The Panthers have won their past nine finals matches.
Plays of the Game Having steadied the ship in the shadow of half-time with a try to Thomas Flegler, the Broncos hit the front in the 45th minute when Ezra Mam produced one of the great grand final tries. Mam took the ball on halfway and left Lindsay Smith and Tago in his wake with some dazzling footwork before out-pacing Dylan Edwards on the run to the line. The 20-year-old then added a second and a third in the space to complete a hat-trick in the space of 10 sizzling minutes.
What They Said "I've never felt so under the pump in a game as we were in that second half tonight. I thought the Broncos deserved to be in the lead but over the course of the last few years we have built enough belief that when we get our game on, good things will happen, but I was a little worried midway through the second half. One thing I never doubt is the boys' ability to keep fighting and there was just enough time to make them get nervous. I can't remember the last time we had to come back like that and win. The 2020 grand final comes to mind. We ran out of time that night but tonight was pretty amazing. I thought Nathan looked really clear and the lessons he has learned gave him the clarity to be able to go 'now it is backs to the wall, now I'm going to go after it'." - Panthers coach Ivan Cleary
"There's no emotion in the sheds, it's very quiet. It's hard to get your head around what actually happened. I feel for all the players in there that gave so much but it wasn't enough in the end. I think the whole stadium thought we had done enough [when Ezra scored his hat-trick]. Right now it's a pretty empty feeling. I watched the AFL grand final yesterday and thought that's not a nice way to lose [for the Lions] and here we are sitting here in the same situation. That second period there, for 20 minutes, that's the Broncos that I know and that's where we'll get to, we'll do that for 80, but we're not there yet. But when we do we'll win premierships and that's what it's about. We're not there yet but we're a lot closer now than we were 12 months ago." - Broncos coach Kevin Walters
What's Next A host of stars from both sides will front in the Pacific Championship Tests which kick off on October 14 with the Kangaroos facing Samoa in Townsville. For those not playing internationals there's a well-earned break before the 2024 pre-season launches in November.

Matildas’ shootout win delivers biggest TV audience since Cathy Freeman
The Matildas have delivered another record-breaking night on and off the field with Saturday night’s penalty-shootout win over France becoming the most-viewed TV event in more than two decades.
The broadcast on Seven was viewed by an average audience of 4.23 million Australians, according to figures from ratings agency OzTAM.
The game’s original slot aired to a five-city metro audience of 2.507 million Australians, rising to 3.045 million during the penalty shoot-out, which ran into Seven’s news slot, with a further regional audience of 1.186 million.
The figure is set to swell even further as overnight OzTAM figures do not account for streaming viewers on Seven’s 7Plus app, which will be released later on Sunday.
The viewing figures eclipse any television broadcast of the past two decades, including AFL and NRL grand finals, Ash Barty’s Australian Open win in 2022 (viewed by 4.1 million), Australia’s 2003 Rugby World Cup loss against England, and Lleyton Hewitt’s 2005 Australian Open final loss.
While data was not tracked at the time by OzTAM, Cathy Freeman’s 400-metre final at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 is reported to have attracted 8.8 million television viewers, making it the most-watched Australian sporting event.
The game, played in front of a packed Brisbane crowd, ended in a stalemate after 90 minutes and extra time, going on to break another record, the longest-ever penalty shootout in both women’s and men’s World Cup history with 20 attempts.
Melbourne handed Seven the biggest share of its audience nationally, 984,000 tuning in from Victoria’s capital, narrowly ahead of Sydney on 931,000, while 513,000 watched from Brisbane.
The fanfare around the Matildas reached new highs this week, the AFL and its stadiums agreeing to air Optus Sport live streams in stadiums before and after Saturday’s fixtures, with crowds in stadiums continuing to watch the coverage as the shootout ran into the first quarter of a Melbourne and Carlton clash at the MCG.
The figure eclipses Monday’s round-of-16 game against Denmark, which was viewed by a metro audience of 2.294 million, and was then the biggest television audience of 2023.
Seven has sublicenced 15 games from Optus Sport, the tournament’s official broadcast partner. The record-breaking viewership figures making the deal a steal for Seven, which picked up for less than $5 million, according to a source with knowledge of the deal who was not permitted to speak publicly.
Optus Sport, the official broadcaster of the tournament on Sunday morning said the World Cup has delivered the platform’s biggest ever four-week period.
Clive Dickens, vice president of television, content and product development at Optus, said the result is a credit to the quality of athletes and football at the tournament.
“Three of the FIFA Women’s World Cup matches have jumped into the top five most-streamed games on Optus Sport, out of a total 6000 live matches in our history.

Watch NRL Live Penrith Panthers vs Brisbane Broncos On 03 March 2023
Penrith Panthers, the champions of the 2022 National Rugby Championship, will begin their 2023 season against the Brisbane Broncos at BlueBet Stadium. In the World Club Challenge Cup, the Penrith Panthers were defeated by the St. Helens team, while the Brisbane Broncos triumphed over the NQ Cowboys team.Watch Live
Tumblr media
Penrith Panthers - favorite to win The incredible work that the Penrith Panthers put in over the previous season resulted in them finishing first on the table in the regular season with 42 points from a possible 24. The home team in the 2022 season scored 636 points, the most points of any club in the league, and allowed 330 points, the fewest points allowed in that season. The Penrith Panthers, on the other hand, went further in the playoffs and won the final game. Before this, they had prevailed against the Parramatta Eels in the 1/8 round, the Canberra Raiders in the quarterfinal stages, and the North Queensland Cowboys in the semis. Prior to the start of this season, the Penrith Panthers had a winning record of four out of their previous five matches.
Brisbane Broncos - will hope for an good start The Brisbane Broncos beat the North Queensland Cowboys in their last preseason game, so they are coming into this game with a bit of momentum. On the other hand, this will be a different matchup for them, with more stringent requirements and demands. The Brisbane Broncos had 28 points at the end of the regular season last year, which put them ninth in the National Rugby League standings. However, they did not make the playoffs. The away team's record in their last five games was one win, one tie, and three losses. This means that they will start the new season with the same record.
Expert Betting Tips After a quick examination, it appears that the team playing at home has the advantage and is best positioned to come out on top. As a result, we are pulling for them to launch the defense of their championship with a performance that is completely dominant. As a result, I am hoping that they will prevail in both halves of the match. In addition, taking into account the players they have available and how well they played during the preseason, I feel that they will be able to cover the spread.
THE TEAM NEWS
PENRITH PANTHERS
Penrith Panthers made it back-to-back Premierships as they defended their crown with a comfortable win over Parramatta Eels in last season's Grand Final with Ivan Cleary’s men harbouring hopes of a three-peat. The Panthers fell short in the World Club Challenge against St. Helens but will be in much better shape for this, although they will have to deal with the loss of Taylan May for the entire campaign after he suffered an ACL injury against the English outfit. Starting 13: Edwards, Turuva, Tago, Crichton, To’o, Luai, Cleary, Leota, Kenny, Fisher-Harris, Garner, Martin, Yeo – Interchanges: Luke, Sorensen, Leniu, Salmon – Reserves: Hosking, Eisenhuth, Peachey, Cogger, Smith
Unavailable: Taylan May (Injured)
BRISBANE BRONCOS
Brisbane Broncos somehow missed out on a spot in the finals in 2022 as they lost five of their final six games to finish the regular season in what was a hugely disappointing end to what had been a promising campaign. The Broncos will view a top eight spot as the bare minimum this season but they have been forced into a re-jig for this opening contest with new signing Reece Walsh out with a facial fracture so Selwyn Cobbo will slot in at fullback. Starting 13: Cobbo, Oates, Staggs, Farnworth, Arthars, Mam, Reynolds, Jensen, Walters, Haas, Capewell, Riki, Carrigan – Interchanges: Paix, Palasia, Flagler, Taupau – Reserves: Mariner, Piakura, Willison, Madden, Hoeter
Unavailable: Kobe Hetherington (Injured), Reece Walsh (Injured)

Round 1 - 2024
THE SEA EAGLE
NO MONKEY BUSINESS!!!
Tumblr media
Round 1
Manly Sea Eagles      36
Defeated
Souths Rabbitohs    24
Tumblr media
In a good opener, Manly have continued to work on turning Tigers discards into genuine first graders.
It has been a long time since Manly won a Rd 1 fixture, and defeating Souths (who are a very good side), albeit at altitude in Vegas on a smaller than regulation field, is a good first step in season 2024.
This was a sea sawing affair, with 3 lead changes, and until mid second half, it was unclear who would get the chocolates. Manly overcame an 8 point deficit early in the second half to mark this as a particularly strong performance.
Manly Haumole Olakau'atu scored a typical powerhouse try, Chery Baby class was everywhere, and the super reliable Reuben Garrick did what he always does, ie gets the job done.
The intercept try by the Saab Turbo was memorable, and the third brother Turbo (who is turning into a bit of try scorer)  scored a nice try near the end to help Manly’s prospects.
Tigers discard Luke Brooks had a strong game. Too early to call whether he is the answer, and one should never get too excited about any ex Tiger’s player in round 1, but so far he looks to be a good buy, and is certainly strengthening the Manly playmaking ranks.
Manly’s run for the next 5 rounds are particularly difficult, Roosters (home), Eels (away), St George (away), Panthers (home) and Warriors (away). They will be doing well on current form, to be 3/6 after this run.
If they can be 3 or 4 wins after 6 rounds, that should set them up well for a decent 2024 season. Time will tell.
OFF FIELD ATROCITIES IN THE OFF SEASON
Pretty Pi$#ss poor really. Ever since the Director of Controversy left for parts and whereabouts unknown, and the role of interim controversy administration was passed over to the bizarre Frenchman Hugh Janus, it has been a sub standard affair all round.
Here is a few from a pretty ordinary menu of atrocities:
Junior Amone avoids jail over hammer attack but NRL career in balance. By Adam Pengilly. SMH December 11, 2023 — 2.30pm
Charges against NRL players Latrell Mitchell and Jack Wighton dropped after police admit to false evidence Latrell Mitchell and Jack Wighton have beaten charges of fighting outside Canberra nightclub Fiction. Australian Associated Press Wed 1 Nov 2023
Brisbane Broncos players Adam Reynolds and Pat Carrigan receive breach notices from the NRL after their late-night scuffle- ABC News 16 February 2024
Footy star Mitch Kenny cops ban for 'couple of Boxing Day lines' social media post involving white substance after initially blaming it on 'trolls who grabbed my phone'- AAP  27 February 2024
 LACK OF NRL INCLUSIVITY, DIVERSITY
In this shambolic Woke world in which we now live, the Sea Eagle was appalled to see the absolute lack of inclusivity and diversity in this article:
How a stint on a Samoan coconut farm sparked an NRL comeback. By Dan Walsh SMH December 18, 2023
Chanel Harris-Tavita’s feet started to itch for the NRL again with coconut in hand on a Samoan farm.…….
Harris-Tavita raised eyebrows when he was off-contract 18 months ago and realising his passion for rugby league had waned, he walked away from a six-figure salary to work out what he wanted. Working on his uncle’s farm in the Samoan village of Afega, population 2000, and collecting coconuts on weekends, it all twigged for the 24-year-old.
Tumblr media
“It was a very simple life over there,” Harris-Tavita said, having kept up with the Warriors stunning rise to a grand final qualifier under Webster when he could.
“It really put life into perspective and made me appreciate what I have here. It was a bit of happiness and a bit of FOMO [fear of missing out]. I was in Samoa watching them play and the Wi-Fi wasn’t great.
Sea Eagle Comment: All this article achieved is to link an incorrect stereotype between pacific islander players and “coconuts” (personal opinion). Was the news outlet concerned serious when it allowed the story go to print?.
VIVA LAS VEGAS
Tumblr media
With an off season that was less than exciting, in terms of off field indiscretions, the only thing left for fans was the prospect of 80 or so NRL players heading to Vegas to expand the religion that is rugby league to the USA.
Many said “What could go wrong?”. As it turned out the jury is open on that until said players return home safely to Australia, and there is no later confirmation of court based legal action being taken post Vegas, against some NRL player who overstepped the mark in the land of the long lost litigation lawyer.
This is a wait and see for now.
The Betoota Advocate cruelly suggested that Manly were part of this trip because it fell on the same weekend as the Gay Mardi Gras, and they wanted to escape the rainbow Guernsey debacle of season 2022.
See https://www.betootaadvocate.com/uncategorized/manly-deny-vegas-trip-has-anything-to-do-with-escaping-sydney-on-mardi-gras-weekend/
The Sea Eagle cannot comment on the accuracy of that, other than to say it makes perfect sense (personal opinion).
Then in the lead up to the big day, this story exploded in Mardi Gras week, over previous magazine photo shots involving none other than any Coach Seibold:
It was bizarre’: The day Manly coach Anthony Seibold posed for a gay magazine
By Adrian Proszenko SMH 28 February , 2024
Tumblr media
Apparently Coach Seibold when playing for the London Broncos did a gay magazine photo shoot at the instigation of then Virgin supremo Richard Branson. As this article says, “Seibold, Shane Millard, Tulsen Tollett and Jon Clarke, who is currently Manly’s head of performance, were among the players to get their kit off. Asked if he had a copy of the centrefold spread to share with Sin Bin, Seibold said: “I get enough shit as it is, I don’t want to give any more ammo to anyone.””.
The Sea Eagle certainly can’t argue with any of that. However, with that said, given the debacle that was the Gay Pride jersey incident of 2022, which saw Manly Legend and Coach Des Hasler dumped (unceremoniously) the mind boggles at what sort of due diligence was undertaken on these two members of the Manly coaching staff (ie Siebold and Clarke).
Manly has to got to get away from these LGBTQ promotional backdrops and concentrate on rugby league. It’s quite clear this is the sort of thing that can turn half the camp (no pun intended) towards giving up playing rugby league for religious reasons.
Anything that has the capacity to cause an NRL player to refuse to play rugby league cannot be good.
As to whether the Vegas experiment will be a long term piece of strategy genius remains to be seen. The Sea Eagle reminds the NRL, that history is littered with failed Australian enterprises who thought going to America and taking them on was a good idea.
It may be a tough ask going to the USA to try and dominate a 350m plus population base (apparently increasing at the rate of 0.5m people a week in illegal arrivals over the Southern borders). Regrettably, Rugby League is a game that is regularly confused with Rugby Union in the USA . Despite its relative simplicity as compared to the farce that is international Rugby Union, it would be fair to say Rugby League is generally not well recognised, let alone understood, in the USA.
No doubt those in control at League Central have a master plan to cover all of this. After all, everyone would readily accept that Rugby League has a long and distinguished history of doing things thoroughly, in a well considered and well executed way.
Tumblr media
Manly Prospects Season 24
Many have asked the Sea Eagle over recent weeks, how will Manly go in 2024?
First, let’s face some cold inconvenient facts. Manly have not made the 8 in the last 2 years. For reasons only they can explain, they also believe that buying players from the West Tigers will improve this and turn them into a premiership powerhouse.
Presently in the line up Manly have the following ex Tigers:
Luke Brooks
Tommy Talau
Matthew Lodge
Josh Aloai
Nathan Brown
Aitasi James
Aaron Woods***
Tumblr media
*** (present status as a Sea Eagle unclear)
The jury is out on this one. As John Cadogan of Auto Expert has often quipped, its time to apply “the BFS- Bullshi*4t  Fact Separator” to this one, and as Investment guru Ben Graham once quoted,  lets put this whole ex Tiger’s player purchase program “under the microscope of common sense”.
Whilst some ex Tigers players clearly go better when they leave the Den (let’s face it they couldn’t go any worse), the Sea Eagle privately fears like all things Tigers, that the wheels will eventually fall off when the blow torch of pressure football is applied.
Time will tell, but the Manly faithful will be watching (like Greta Thunberg at a RAM and Chevy truck convention in Tampa Bay Florida). If the implosion does occur, Manly management can expect to hear some fairly well constructed criticism from all sides on another fine mess the Club will have found themselves in.
The market for used up Ex Tigers players is is much like that of used EV’s. The best outcome you can expect is to pay someone to take it/them off your hands.

Taylor’s version nfl 2023 shirt
The World Energy Outlook 2010 report built on this and showed that removing fossil‐fuel consumption subsidies, which totaled $312 billion in 2009 could make a Taylor’s version nfl 2023 shirt contribution to meeting energy security and environmental goals, including mitigating CO2 and other emissions. Several fundamental trends persist: energy demand and CO2 emissions rise even higher; energy market dynamics are increasingly determined by emerging economies; fossil fuels remain the dominant energy sources; and providing universal energy access to the world’s poor countries continues to be an elusive goal. Despite the challenges it currently faces, nuclear power has specific characteristics that underpin the commitment of some countries to maintain it as a future option.
