When unidentified photos become identified
By Jonathan Monfiletto
Tumblr media
Over the summer, we received a donation of photographs and other items from The Chronicle-Express – the now-defunct and sadly missed Chronicle-Express, that is, a weekly newspaper whose history dates back almost as long as Yates County’s existence [Edit: Shortly after this article was originally written, it was announced, much to the surprise and delight of the Yates County community, it was announced The Chronicle-Express would continue under new ownership.]  – including several photos with little or no identifying information. We decided to post these unidentified photos on our social media outlets (Facebook and Instagram) and see if any of our wonderful and passionate followers could fill us in.
The results were amazing and nearly perfect – as of this writing, only one of the two dozen photos posted received no comments indicating its identification – and fun. Really fun. Truly fun. Along with receiving identifying comments for almost every single of these photos, it was fun – for someone who neither grew up in Yates County nor was alive at the time many of these photos were taken (most of them appeared in The Chronicle-Express during the early to mid 1980s – to read people’s comments on social media as they shared their knowledge and memories of the people and places depicted and the respective people’s and places’ marks on their personal stories and on Yates County history.
Perhaps the most fun of these photos for me depicts a young man in a U.S. Navy uniform, whose last name is Schroeder according to the name tag on his uniform, standing it what appears to be a submarine. Other than these details, and a date stamp of September 11, 1986 on the back, we knew nothing about this photo before we posted it on social media. Before long, we knew the man’s name is Tom Schroeder, and at the time he was a senior chief petty officer aboard a submarine. He is the son of Leland and Mary Schroeder, and he has a brother named Herb whom he may look like.
Then, the day after we posted the photo, I received a call from a woman expressing interest in this particular photo. The phone call started out something like this:
“I’m calling about the photo of Tom Schroeder.”
“OK, and how do you know Tom?”
“Well, I’ve been married to him for 41 years!”
“Oh!”
Yes, the caller was Tom’s wife, Roberta Tozier, and they currently reside in North Carolina, where they moved from the Saratoga area, where Tom had retired from the Navy as a master chief petty officer. Tom was a local Penn Yan boy, and the two met while Roberta attended Keuka College. They had been married for five years at the time this photo was taken. As an interesting tidbit, she told me the photo places Tom in the forward of the submarine, but he actually worked in the aft.
Upon her request, I sent her the scanned photo along with a digital copy in which the photo appeared – in an article in the September 11, 1986 edition of The Chronicle-Express with the headline, “PY man gets immersed in his work on Pintado.” I decided to read this article for myself, to learn more about the man and the story behind the photo. Interestingly enough, with Roberta’s positioning of Tom in the photo, the caption reads: “Navy Machinist’s Mate Tom Schroeder checks equipment onboard the USS Pintado.”
Back in 1986, Tom was a 35-year-old machinist’s mate and submariner in the Navy aboard the USS Pintado, a nuclear attack submarine. As the article describes: “This type of submarine was designed for a special mission – to seek out and destroy enemy ships and submarines.” And Tom was the senior enlisted nuclear power adviser, “responsible,” in his own words, “for coordinating departmental watch bills and overseeing the training of the engineering department.”
According to the article, through the work of Tom and his team of sailors, the 4,800-ton Pintado could cruise underwater for extended periods of time without surfacing and could generate enough electricity to support a small city. Tom had served in the Navy for 15 years by that point, having graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1969 and enlisted in the Navy two years later. After his basic training post and other duty assignments, Tom reported to the Pintado in 1981.
In the article, Tom acknowledged he joined the Navy because of the Vietnam War still happening when he graduated high school. Having lost his college deferment and knowing he would likely be drafted, Tom visited recruiters from the different services before deciding on the Navy – “the one (branch) who could offer me the most education.”
And, the Navy had provided Tom with the ability to live and work in several different countries and localities – Spain, Brazil, Hong Kong, and even the North Pole, to name a few. And all because of an unidentified photo that became identified, the Navy provided us with the ability to tell Tom’s story.

The Rickover Interview
My friend Bob Bishop, straight out of the US Naval Academy, was interviewed by Admiral Hyman Rickover in 1964 for admission to the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program. Rickover, known as the “Father of the Nuclear Navy”, served in a flag (General Officer) rank for nearly 30 years (1953 to 1982), ending his career as a four-star admiral. His total of 63 years of active duty service make him the…

AUKUS: the Anglo-Saxons want war in the Pacific
Tumblr media
The agreement between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, known as AUKUS, claims to counter an enemy 5,500 kilometers from Canberra: China. Australia is, in fact, the bridgehead for US war preparations in the Pacific. As Hillary Clinton put it: America's future lies in Asia. The Anglo-Saxon objective is to take control of the world's most dynamic economic region by force.
Tensions in the South China Sea are fuelled by Washington, using the claims of Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Sultanate of Brunei to islands and atolls in the region, such as the Paracels and Spratley Islands. Above all, the South China Sea is a zone of strategic importance for Washington, due to its economic dynamism. Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia are vying with China for oil and gas reserves in legally ill-defined areas. Obviously, the USA, India and Japan systematically support those who oppose their Chinese challenger. Since the Obama administration, the United States has reoriented its economic and military strategy towards Asia, where it wants to take a slice of the pie. Access to the Strait of Malacca is crucial for them, as it is for Beijing and everyone else. Despite the tensions, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is more inclined to support a peaceful resolution to the conflicts in the South China Sea. Washington prefers to add fuel to the fire to legitimize its military intervention.
The Chinese in the Pacific The history of Chinese emigration around the world dates back to the opening of the maritime Silk Road. Over the centuries, the Chinese have emigrated en masse to Southeast Asia and Oceania. Chinese emigration to Southeast Asia began in the 16th century, mainly at the request of European colonial powers in need of labor. After the Second World War, the People's Republic of China put an end to large-scale migration. With China's economic boom since the 1980s, and the expansion of its trade relations, more and more Chinese migrants are once again settling in the countries of the region. In addition to these long-standing Chinese migratory flows, China generously supports the development of its partners. China's expertise in infrastructure construction is well established. The Solomon Islands, for example, export over 60% of their goods, mainly timber and gold, to China, which is granting increasingly generous loans via the China Exim Bank for major projects in Papua New Guinea. Papua's enormous reserves of natural gas, gold, nickel, cobalt and copper are the focus of much interest. In Ramu, a Chinese company is developing the world's fifth largest nickel mine. China has become an essential partner for the entire South Pacific. Despite the 2006 anti-Chinese riots in the Solomon Islands and the exodus of several hundred Chinese families from Tonga, driven out by xenophobic violence, China's presence in the Pacific remains more consensual than the gunboat policy to which the Anglo-Saxons have become accustomed.
AUKUS objectives Since its creation on September 15, 2021, AUKUS (an acronym for Australia, United Kingdom and United States) has aimed to counter "Chinese expansionism" in the Indo-Pacific region. Although not formally a military alliance, this tripartite agreement between Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom is indeed a tool of war. The Anglo-Saxons are determined to preserve their maritime empire. Behind the backs of their populations - without any vote in parliaments or Congress - the three governments have placed Australia in the front line of this new American war against China. For the first time, the Australian government has explicitly named China, its most important economic partner, as the target of this military initiative. People of Chinese origin account for 4% of Australia's population. Students from the People's Republic of China are now the largest foreign student population in New Zealand and Australia. Australia and New Zealand host 24 and 10 Confucius Institutes respectively. Canberra's bias is difficult to reconcile with its economic interests. But perhaps, as in Europe, American interests prevail over national ones among Australian politicians. The AUKUS agreement provides for the acquisition by the Australian Navy of at least eight US Virginia-class nuclear attack submarines, dubbed the "most powerful predators of the sea"… AUKUS members will then develop a new generation of submarines, dubbed SSN-AUKUS. The idea is not to defend ourselves, but to wage a full-scale war against the Chinese. Total war with China is the Anglo-Saxon option for imposing their imperialist hegemony in the Indo-Pacific region. The propaganda campaign carried out in several Australian newspapers, such as the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age, in March 2023, was aimed at preparing Australian opinion to accept the presence of American nuclear weapons in northern Australia and the eventual mobilization of young Australians to wage this war of the American empire against the Chinese. In short, part of Australia's political elite is prepared to sacrifice everything for Washington. Thus, American submarines and weapons will be financed by cuts in health spending, restrictions on care for the elderly and further budget cuts to other essential social services. This budgetary restriction is the result of arms purchases from America: $368 billion for submarines alone, or $15,000 for each Australian citizen.
The American empire in Australia American aircraft and attack submarines, as well as warships, are stationed in Australia on a semi-permanent basis, completing the country's transformation into a gigantic American aircraft carrier. The expansion of US military bases in Australia is, indeed, a key element of US war preparations in the Pacific. Following the announcement of the AUKUS alliance. The Australian government has pledged to host US troops, bombers, fighters and warships "in the event of military conflict with nuclear powers". This includes the rotational deployment of U.S. aircraft of all types to Australia, enhanced maritime cooperation with increased logistical and support capabilities for U.S. surface ships and submarines, and strengthened land cooperation. The US military's move to Australia is the result of its military redeployment, following the withdrawal of US troops from the Middle East. With the end of the war in Iraq and the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the United States is seeking to redirect its military resources and belligerent energy to other regions. Australia is a strategic location to counter China's growing influence in the South China Sea region. The China Sea is a crucial gateway for maritime trade and contains significant hydrocarbon reserves. The United States wants to impose its control over this region, where the future of the world is at stake. The installation of the US army in Australia is therefore part of a geostrategic shift by the United States towards the Pacific, in order to seize the region's economic opportunities.
The British Empire 2.0 The role and motivations of the British military in this wartime madness must not be overlooked. When Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952, she ruled an empire of 600 million people. The sun never set on the British Empire. The ebb had already begun with the independence of India in 1947, but a section of British opinion, behind Winston Churchill, was determined to hang on to the imperial adventure. The Brexit could well be the opportunity for these nostalgics to embark again, albeit with Washington's help, on the imperial adventure. In his book "L'Empire en marche. Des peuples sans qualités, de Vienne à Ottawa", jurist Marc Chevrier argues that the United Kingdom, despite the loss of its colonies, remained fundamentally an empire, rather than a nation-state. After Boris Johnson's Conservatives won the December 2019 elections, the UK left a European Union that was taking it nowhere, to become once again an empire without clearly defined borders, like the stateless financiers who control the City or Wall Street. The British Empire, once the greatest empire in human history, has not entirely disappeared. Chevrier suggests that some Brexit supporters are now reactivating the networks of the British Empire, strengthening economic relations with her majesty's former colonies. After all, the UK inoculated America, one of its former colonies, with the virus of maritime empires.
The AUKUS is a threat to peace in the Pacific. Global stability is, once again, called into question by Washington's latest belligerent initiative in Asia.

LAID UP RUSSIAN SUBMARINES, SAINT PETERSBURG...
This photo dates from a few years back, as we were preparing to dock in Saint Petersburg.
We were sailing upstream along the River Neva aboard the Silver Whisper at the time. As we progressed toward our city centre berth next to the Elizabeth Bridge, a quite stunning panalopy of superannuated, Soviet era seagoing hardware sat shackled to the river banks, almost close enough to touch...

The Oscar II nuclear submarine! 🔥 The Oscar II nuclear submarine Was specifically designed during the Cold War to hunt American aircraft carriers, the pride of American naval power Since each carrier is protected by its own strike group of other warships (many of them specialized in antisubmarine warfare) the Oscar’s primary objective isn’t to creep up close for a torpedo attack.. It’s to launch Anti-Shipping Cruise Missiles, or ASCMs, from hundreds of miles away The ten-meter (33ft) long cruise missiles weigh almost eight tons each, and can be launched from underwater NATO’s reporting name for these missiles is literally SS-N-19 “Shipwreck” Credit: @recco_wise 👉🏻 Follow 👉🏻@themillionaire.life_ 👉🏻#themillinorelife Magzine 😍 #russiannavy #submarine #submarines #submariner #nuclearsubmarine #nuclear #nuclearpower #nuclearenergy #nuclearweapons #russianmilitary #sovietnavy #sovietmilitary #sovietunion #ussr #russia #russia🇷🇺 #warship #warships #navyship #coldwar #coldwarera #navyhistory #russiansubmarine #worldwar https://www.instagram.com/p/CO4QOFFLf0P/?igshid=1mdyy89dacmt5

Submarine Games
Crazy Ivan* anyone? Another Submarine story from my buddy, Bob Bishop**… It was mid-September, 1970. Our submarine, the USS Finback, had been commissioned way back in February, but we were still doing a number of exercises and independent operations to get additional sea time under our belt. On this particular exercise, we were to provide “services” to anti-submarine warfare (ASW) configured Navy…
