My NuMex Orange Spice jalapeño I have inside had finally ripened for the first time.
It’s so small and cute, I can’t wait to taste it and save the seeds.

#TacoTuesday in Space? Yep!
Who doesn't like tacos? Who wouldn't like tacos in space?
Tumblr media
From way back in 1996, here's #NASA astronaut Franklin R. Chang-Diaz with his Tuesday treat in the galley of the space shuttle Columbia. 🚀
Tumblr media
Fast forward to 2021 and we catch #astronaut Raja Chari and his super yummy looking #taco made with fresh chili peppers 🌶 grown right there onboard the #ISS! 🌱🚜
Tumblr media
NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei— who had the honor of conducting the first harvest of the pepper crop on October 29, 2021—gets ready for dinner with another fresh #chilipepper grown in the Advanced Plant Habitat onboard the orbiting laboratory! 🔬
This particular variety—a hybrid known as NuMex ‘Española Improved’ Pepper—has mild heat and was chosen because peppers are an excellent source of Vitamin C.
Tumblr media
Megan McArthur, NASA astronaut and Expedition 66 flight engineer, enjoys her taco filled with fajita beef, rehydrated tomatoes and artichokes, and chile peppers. #tacosrock #foodie
Why is NASA growing #plantsinspace? In addition to finding ways to feed astronauts on longer duration missions, research has shown that growing colorful plants and vegetables in space has a positive impact on the physical and psychological well-being of the crew.

Hatch Green Chiles
The Hatch Valley in southern New Mexico, especially the area around the town of Hatch, is where Hatch Green Chiles are primarily farmed. Hatch green chiles come in several different types, each with a unique flavor profile and amount of spiciness. Big Jim, Sandia, and NuMex are a few of the well-liked kinds. Hatch Green Chiles are frequently prepared through roasting. The chiles are often roasted until the skin blisters over an open flame or in an oven. They taste better when roasted, and peeling them is simpler. New Mexican cooking frequently uses Hatch green chiles. They can be found in many different foods, including as enchiladas, tacos, burritos, stews, soups, and salsas. Seasonal Availability: Late summer and early fall are the typical harvest times for Hatch Green Chiles.

Harvesting my babies before we disappear on another road trip...
So we have (clockwise from top left) Chocolate Habanero, Numex Trick or Treat Habanero, Scotch Bonnet, Black Scorpion Tongue, Golden Ghost, Trinidad Moruga Scorpion, BTR Scorpion and Carolina Reaper.
Still plenty more on the plants if they ripen before the days grow short. Guess I may have to invest in some LED lighting.
And now one of the criteria for our new home is a plot big enough for a grown up polytunnel. Just to add spice to the search...

I have potted out 3/5 of my seedling trays and oh boy oh man. I may be running out of windowsill.
Tumblr media
let's hope they live longer this year
Sooooo we have 6 cherry tomato bushes, 5 scotch bonnets and 6 numex twilight (which is a multicoloured-fruiting mini chilli bush that I have yet to successfully get to maturity but if I do it'll be so cute, it's got yellow and red and purple fruits all jumbled in together).
then on the kitchen windowsill still in the potting trays (....takeaway boxes) I've got some ghost peppers (germinated but still too small to pot out) and some habaneros (planted more recently bc I forgot I had the seed so hopefully will see some shoots in the next couple of weeks). plus some peas because the FUCKING pigeons have dug up the last 4 sets I planned outside so we're going to try indoor germination.
I also broke up the crowded pot of basil I got for 28p in the clearance fridge like a month ago bc it's dying off and split it across 2 bigger pots, and planted a sweetpea kit mum gave me. so all in all a productive time.

Strange hot peppers season has started! The purple ones are the NuMex April Fool’s Day. I have no idea what the curly one are - I haven’t sown any that were supposed to look like this - but I’ll take them.
