Context: I work in an elderly assessment unit where most of my patients are above 65 years old and have dementia. I needed to transfer my patient to another bed-space and to be more efficient, I transfer them with their beds.

Me: Hi patient, the other room is ready for you now. Would you like to lie down and I’ll give you a ride?

Patient: gasps*. At my age!?

It's been some time since I posted a story mostly because Covid-19 and I'm just too busy to remember Tumblr exists. But I had two stories already that happened today and I've only been clocked in for 1.5 hours.

1) At the coffee stand. Lady and friend walk up to the counter and ask, "Espresso Milkshake! What's that!?" Very excitedly. The barista, bless her soul, responded straight faced, "A milkshake with espresso."

The lady then replies with "What's it made of!!??"

Barista once again: "Coffee... and milk." Good lord.

2) Gal comes in my office to return her checked out ACLS book. I locate her check out sheet and note she didn't fill out her Department or when her class was. These are payroll deduction forms in the case of you damaging and/or not returning the book. I sign off on it coming back and mention casually, "Just FYI, next time you check out a book, please fill out the whole form."

She gives me a blank stare and says, "Oh I was here with another lady and she didn't tell me I needed to do that."

Lady. Nobody should have to tell you. It's a form. It's blank with lines that tell you what it wants. It says:

Name ______

Date _______

Book # _____

Department ______

Date of class ______

It's just not for me...

I don't believe "the nursing home" is for me. So far I've seen more deaths than I can count, and JUST the SIMPLE idea that when we all get old we end up in some prison. JUST THINK ABOUT IT: 1.told when to wake up. 2.told when to go to bed. 3.told when&what to eat, breakfast, lunch, dinner and no snacks after dinner time. 4.told what to wear. That is if your with it enough to speak. 5. Have to confer with nurisng staff to leave. Signing in and out, but you can have as many visitors as u want --whenever. It's sad. It's all around sad. :/ DEPRESSING REALLY.... And to top it all...there's not much room for learning and advancing your medical background because it's all repetitious.

The day I held your hand, while you were dying

30th of November 2018, 7:30PM. Time to start my night shift, as usual. After the handover, where we share our concerns and crucial information about each patient under our care, we start the observations. I was told you were quite poorly but the plan was to not escalate as the prognosis were bad... However, nothing was documented by the medical team and we had to keep re-checking your observations. We could clearly see you were deterioritng minute by minute. When finally doctors arrived upon the ward, the plan was made. I kept my routine as always, after the observations round I started the drug round followed by helping all patients to settle for the night. Everything went as planned but one thing. In the early morning I went to check on you and there you were, dying. I felt impotent, frustrated and extremely sad for not being able to do anything for you but keeping you confortable and not leaving you alone in this last moments. I held your hand and stayed there for 30 minutes praying for your soul in what is my belief. Talking to you and not letting you feel alone. After that half an hour, it happened. The last breath.

Being a nurse is more than medications, observations, washes or other clinical duties. It is giving love, sharing feelings, being human. With this I want to give my thank you to all nurses around the world for making a difference in each person's life under your care. You might not feel appreciated at all the time, but that does not mean you do not make the difference. We still do. Thank you. And for you, this patient, rest in peace.
