First thing first, please introduce yourself!
Hello, my name is Jenny Kong. I‘m studying education in the University of Auckland.
So the “beauty sickness”, When it began?
I don't know exactly when it began. It may just start from one day when I cared about the people around me and their evaluation of beauty.
What do you think about beauty sickness? What is it, and how did it became a part of your life?
Because many people think women should be thin and good-looking, including females. Some people always say that you need to lose weight and learn how to make up to look better. Everyone wants to be beautiful and perfect, but no one prescribes what beauty is. The actors on the screen always show their best side, including makeup made by professional makeup artists for hours, expensive clothing accessories fixed in advance for an unknown period of time, and even meals carefully prepared by nutritionists. As normal people, we do not have the energy and financial resources care about our appearance. It can be said that many actors earn money by appearing on the stage, and they have a lot of time and money to maintain and take care of themselves.
What is the most thing let you getting extremely anxious about your physical appearance?
“What worries me the most is that all kinds of images about beauty and fashion in numerous social medias. Sometimes, I clearly know that the images of women I see in the media are not representative of the general population of women, I totally understand that they are statistical outliers. But it doesn’t help, I still felt shame and depression, then I would put the thought into action. This series of activities consumed me a lot of time and energy.”
What do you feel when you are aware of its existence?
By the time I’ve realized that I had changed a lot according to other people's thoughts, not my heart.
How does beauty sickness affect your life?
The biggest influences on my life are diet and make-up. For a long time, I could not go out without makeup, and only had one meal every day. At that time, I thought I was not perfect. It can be said that I feel inferior because I cared too much about other people's ideas, eyes and comments.
How long did it took?
The life like this lasted for about one year or two. During that time, I always felt that other people's thoughts were more important than mine. I did not listen to my own voice and heart. I just hope others can think I'm thin and good-looking as "beauty" they defined.
On the whole, what is the different between before and now?
I was spending alarming amounts of time thinking about, talking about, trying to modify my physical appearance. I wanted so much to feel beautiful. Fortunately, now I can calm down, and objectively face up to the problem of my beauty sickness.After the change, I don't care so much about other people's opinions, but my own thoughts. I'm more confident and happier in this kind of life. Now I know that appearance is not all of a person. We need to spend more energy to improve ourselves and do what we want to do.
Any suggestions for people still worring about their physical appearance?
1. Invest less in beauty.
2. Try not to think of your body as a collection of parts for other people to look at. Think of your body as unified, as whole, as your tool for exploring the world.
3. Stop worrying about the size of your thighs, and think about the strength of your thighs, because those legs, after all, are the legs that walk you around in the world. Stop talking about your upper arms as though they are “diseased”, those are the arms that reach out and bring the things you love close to you.
4. Limit your mirror time.
5. Find the balance between the pursuit of beauty and physical & mental health.

I got back two days ago from seven days camping at Kai Iwi Lakes, about 3 hours north of Auckland. My sister came and set up beside me, as has become our custom, and we were thrilled to encounter really good weather for most of it. (Sadly, northland is suffering a drought right now, so I hope they get rain soon.)
This time camping was going to be a bit of a challenge. I am not long recovered from my ankle surgery, and most days I also feel the effects of lower back pain (sciatica), so I was not looking forward to packing up the equipment and then setting up the tent. Sure enough, by that evening I was hobbling and had taken a few doses of paracetamol, which does help a bit. ALSO, as you will have read in previous posts, I’ve started a process of losing weight and improving health by following a carb-free (almost), intermittent-fasting, regime. My nutritionist gave me a link to a local company who make freeze-dried food that is nutritious and so I purchased about four meals and two breakfasts.
The road north was busy, but I stopped at a health food cafe for a kombucha. Nice view:

40 mins later I pulled in to our relatively deserted campsite and Helen and I helped each other set up tents. This smaller campsite has flush toilets up the hill, and no other amenities. Shops are 35 mins away driving, so we didn’t plan on buying out. I had a chillybin and a smaller one inside that, which managed to keep meat cold for a few days. My meals were delicious from Sunday night through to Wednesday night, and all pretty much on target for my meal plans:
I skipped breakfast Tuesday and Thursday, and we had no treats except for a small ice cream on the last weekend, purchased from the caravan at the neighbouring campsite. By Thursday, the ants had found the inner contents of my chilly bin, and there were only mouldering vegetables in there anyway. I moved to using the paleo bread (which doesn’t mould), peanut butter, and the dried meals.
Exercise-wise, I really am not back to the fitness I had a year ago at the same place. Then, we walked around a portion of the lake and back. Now, I did little beyond swim, but I did that 6 times a day, sometimes 7. It was great to sink into cool clean fresh water and feel all the weight on ankle and back disappear. I lived in my swimming costumes for the entire time, apart from at night when the weather cooled.
Kai Iwi lakes are inverted fresh water sandhills, going down to a depth of ten stories. They are remarkably beautiful and cannot be beaten for their swimming possibilities. No tides to worry about, not large toothy fish lurking in the depths, pretty much a HUGE swimming pool that doesn’t need chlorine. The further side of the biggest lake hosts families and boaties who want to get out and use water toys, like jet skis and power boats. There are showers there, and a small caravan selling food, so it’s a draw. We prefer the relative quiet of the smaller campsite.
It’s easy to snap a glorious sunset or sunrise, and get caught up watching the bird life.
and the water! Leaping off the top of the submerged white sandhill into a bottomless depth of azure and blue – ah, I shall have to hold that image for another year.
Soon enough, the insects start to intrude. Ants found the inside of the tent, flies loved my front foyer, and black beetles fell out of the umbrella on the mornings I opened it. Not much to worry about, really.

It’s taken a couple of days to unpack, wash clothes, get rid of rubbish, wash my car, and finally feel like I’m on target to go to work on Thursday. I was very pleased to find that I’ve lost a total of 8.4 kgs since I started my food plan, and hadn’t gained over the camping trip. Ahead of us now is usual city life: schools and universities are back, students will throng the halls and streets of my workplace, the roads will be busy, the weather will get cooler and wetter. I will carry the images and impressions of last week in my mind and heart for a long while yet.

The Itchy Dozen Worst Foods for Eczema
People are often surprised to find the Itchy Dozen includes some of the so-called 'good' foods for eczema. I know the Itchy Dozen contradicts some popular beliefs published in online blogs. However, according to Australian research conducted over the past thirty years, these foods could be the reason your skin is dry, flaky and incredibly itchy (ref: Loblay and Swain).
I've seen this information help hundreds of so called 'hopeless' cases of eczema. People who have had eczema for 20, 30 or 40 years and more, who thought they were stuck with eczema for life, are seeing their eczema clear up for the first time. It can really change lives but it requires a change in beliefs about healthy eating. This quote sums it up:
"One man's medicine is another man's sleepless night itching."
So a food that is good for an eczema-free person, such as avocado, could trigger a bout of maddening itching in another person.
Not counting allergy foods (as these vary), here are the surprising foods and beverages most likely to give you itchy eczema ...
1. Dairy products
Dairy products, including cow’s milk, yoghurt, butter and cheese, are the second most common allergy food seen in eczema sufferers (after egg).
Dairy products can also cause damage to the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. When the gut lining is damaged from eating dairy products, tiny holes allow larger food particles to enter the body and allergic reactions and sensitivities can result. Naturopaths often refer to this as 'leaky gut' and the medical term doctors use is 'increased intestinal permeability'.
Yoghurt is particularly bad for eczema as it often contains added sugar, fruit flavourings, amines (histamines from fermentation) and a natural colour called Annatto (160b) which can trigger eczema.
Calcium deficiency can cause eczema
It's important to take a calcium supplement (instead of consuming dairy products) as calcium deficiency can contribute to eczema, and the eczema will not improve until this deficiency (if present) is corrected.
I like to prescribe a pure, fine calcium powder with added magnesium and glycine as these nutrients promote a good night's sleep, which eczema sufferers often lack.
If you are itchy, one heaped scoop of Skin Friend PM mixed into water or food will quickly calm down the itch.  
2. Grapes
If you have eczema or asthma, avoid grapes and grape-products such as wine, sultanas, raisins and grape juice. Why? Because grapes are a “triple threat” as they are a very rich source of three itch-promoting chemicals called salicylates, amines and monosodium glutamate (MSG) which are known to worsen eczema (Loblay and Swain 2006).
Salicylates are a natural pesticide made by many fruits and vegetables, and it's also found in aspirin, perfumes, herbal medicines and baby teething gel.
Instead of grapes, eat peeled pears as they are a low-salicylate eczema-friendly alternative.
3. Oranges
Oranges and orange products including juices have similar properties to grapes as they are a strongly acidifying fruit, and a rich source of two itchy chemicals: salicylates and amines.
36% of eczema sufferers experience a worsening of eczema symptoms when they eat amine-rich foods such as oranges. (Loblay and Swain 2006).
4. Kiwi fruit
Kiwi fruit can make you itch like mad as it is a strongly acidifying fruit and a rich source of salicylates and amines which commonly trigger eczema.
Did you know food chemical intolerances can take days to appear? After you have eaten an irritating food such as kiwi fruit, reactions can either be immediate or the next day but they can also occur up to three days later. No wonder people are confused about food intolerances.
5. Soy sauce/tamari sauce
Soy sauce is very rich in amines and MSG (both natural or artificial), so they can trigger eczema and other types of skin inflammation.
35 percent of eczema sufferers experience a worsening of eczema symptoms when they eat glutamates including MSG (Loblay and Swain 2006).
6. Tomato
Tomato and products containing tomato including tomato ketchup and spaghetti Bolognese, are another triple threat as they are very rich sources of salicylates, amines and natural MSG. The three worst chemicals for triggering eczema!
7. Avocado
We have had hundreds of reports from eczema sufferers who say avocado worsens their eczema.
While avocado is a healthy addition to your diet when you don't have eczema, avocado is one of the richest sources of amines and itch-promoting salicylates.
8. Broccoli
This tip may surprise you but it could save you years of pain. Broccoli, spinach, silverbeet and kale can worsen eczema symptoms because they are another 'triple threat' - all are rich sources of itch-promoting salicylates, amines and natural MSG. That's why we like them so much... MSG is highly addictive.
I'm not saying these foods are bad, just problematic while you have eczema, if you are sensitive to salicylates. But you won't know if you are sensitive to salicylates (or amines or MSG) until you avoid these foods for a couple of weeks, then test them again.
In the meantime, eczema-friendly alternatives are the greens that are lower in salicylates and these include green beans, iceberg lettuce and celery to name a few.
Tip: after your eczema has disappeared, gradually expand your leafy green intake.
9. Dried fruits
Dried fruits contain a range of problematic chemicals - you could say they are a quadruple threat as they can contain salicylates, amines, MSG and sulphites!
All types of dried fruits including dried apricots, dates, prunes and sultanas, contain high levels of itch-promoting salicylates and amines, and some also contain the preservative sulphur dioxide and natural MSG which is why they are flavoursome. But they will make you itch like mad.
So skip the dried fruits in cereals, avoid muesli bars and ditch the dried fruits in your child's lunch-box.
More than 50 percent of people with eczema react to preservatives which are common in dried fruits, and their eczema symptoms worsen as a result (Ref: Loblay and Swain 2006)
10. Deli meats
Deli meats including sausages, ham, bacon and flavoured meats, to name a few, are high in nitrates, flavour enhancers and saturated fats, which can worsen the itch of eczema.
Nitrates triggers eczema symptoms in 43 per cent of eczema sufferers (Loblay and Swain 2006).
But it's not all bad news, good quality meats such as skinless chicken, lean lamb and beef are fine to eat, (organic is best as antibiotics are not used). And if you are not sensitive to seafood, fresh fish is a healthy option.
11. Eggs
More than 70% of eczema sufferers are allergic to eggs according to 'skin prick' and patch testing.
Another reason to avoid eggs includes the risk of 'egg white injury' (yes, that is the medical term). If eaten on a frequent basis raw eggs can cause a biotin deficiency that can trigger eczema. While not everyone's eczema is caused by raw eggs, this information from The Eczema Diet is interesting food for thought.
12. Junk food
New Zealand researchers discovered children who eat fast food (take away foods) three or more times per week are significantly more likely than other children to develop severe eczema.
The researchers from Auckland University used international data compiled from almost two million children and found they were not only more prone to eczema, they were also more likely to develop asthma.  
The solution? Cook your meals at home and ensure you use eczema-friendly ingredients...  
How to prevent eczema from the inside out?
Here are two ways to treat your eczema naturally:
12-week low chemical diet
The Eczema Detox is a healthy low chemical diet that is low in sugar and totally free of glutamates/MSG, preservatives/additives and dairy. It also has plenty of gluten-free and vegan options.
The Eczema Detox, which was published in 2018 and is the new version of The Eczema Diet, also shows you how to successfully diagnose food intolerances and chemical intolerances (via the FID Program), so you know what to avoid and what to eat to become eczema free.
Skin friendly supplements
There are a range of nutrients to help prevent chemical sensitivity and repair eczema-prone skin, including magnesium, molybdenum, zinc, biotin, vitamin B6 and a range of vitamins to deactivate salicylates and other itch-promoting chemicals. Molybdenum deactivates sulphite preservatives and amines; anti-histamine vitamin C and vitamin B6 to help reduce allergic reactions (it gradually works over a three month period).

According to Dr. Ronald Evans, the lead author of the study, a protein called Rev-ErbA (pronounced ree-verb-AY) may be the key to unlocking a regular, healthy circadian rhythm no matter where (or when) in the world you are.
Understanding Your Biological Clock
Turns out, the circadian rhythm, a physiological cycle that roughly matches up with the length of a day, doesn’t just regulate when we feel sleepy — it also regulates when we get hungry and when we feel most active.
“Under normal circumstances,” Evans said, “we sleep when it’s dark and wake up and eat when the sun rises.”
Eating is a key point: Circadian rhythm is about both sleep and metabolism. In other words, you can fight jet lag by consuming (and burning) calories at the right times as well as trying to sleep at proper times.
Over-the-Counter Jet Lag Pills?
Your circadian rhythm doesn’t regulate itself: Rev-ErbA does. According to Evans’s study, the protein acts as a sort of master switch that coordinates the “turning on and off” of genes that regulate our circadian rhythms, including those involved in metabolism.

Counterintuitive as that sounds, it’s far better than easing into your morning under the hotel duvet with a cup of coffee. “We can use food and light exposure to adjust more rapidly by timing when we eat, sleep, wake up, and are exposed to natural light,” she advised. Sunlight, she said, “helps signal and reset our circadian rhythms,” allowing our bodies to adapt more quickly.
Snyder added that what you order for breakfast can also make a difference. To combat the stresses of travel, avoid those fatty, sugary foods we all crave when we’re sleepy and instead eat foods rich in amino acids and antioxidants, such as asparagus, broccoli, avocado, spinach, and garlic. Avocado toast and veggie omelets never looked better.

Get ahead of the game. Some shift their sleep schedules before a trip; thanks to Evans’s study on Rev-ErbA, we now know that you can shift your meal schedule, too. Snyder said “we should fast while on the plane, and then eat soon after landing, in order to reset our rhythm.” And if you land with a ravenous appetite at midnight, try to avoid an absurdly late dinner. Instead, “time your first meal to match the nearest meal time of your new time zone,” she said.
You are what you eat. “Be sure not to eat a protein- or fat-rich dinner the night before travel,” said Snyder. “Not only will that make you feel heavy [on the plane], but it also directs energy into digestion through the night.” This makes it harder to fall asleep in flight — as if it weren’t challenging already. Skipping the plane food doesn’t hurt, either.
You’re also what you drink. “Drink plenty of water and bring natural vitamin C or antioxidant packets to mix into your water on the plane and after your flight,” advised Snyder. She said travelers should also avoid alcohol and caffeine prior to, during, and after travel, since both are dehydrating and can have deleterious effects the nervous system. If you do drink, go with the frequent travelers’ rule of thumb: two glasses of water for every glass of wine or cup of coffee.
Supplements help. You know to take melatonin if you can’t fall asleep in your new time zone. But what about magnesium oxide? It can keep your digestive health in check (we’re talking about the end process of nutrition here), which contributes a “regular” circadian rhythm.
Be realistic. If you don’t recover from jet lag in the first day or two, don’t beat yourself up. Some travelers are faster adapters than others, and circadian clocks can be adjusted only bit by bit.
