"O Mikey, Where Art Thou" (audio link at the bottom)
I could only be there for a dream
so I gathered my one month's worth of words
a bottle of rum and a small bag of weed,
hurried and got to his crib.
"You know it's a shame that this PA
doesn't go up to eleven
because tonight we're going
on a Holy Bender"
he exclaimed in excitement as I entered.
He led the way
with a Nyorican jive and elegance fueled strut
to the living room.
The poster over his couch caught my eyes
"help me God, 'cause man won't" it read.
We sat back on the leather seats
we filled our glasses and we got ready to begin.
We puffed and we sipped
exchanging ideas, finishing the bottle of rum
and moving on to gin.
We puffed and we sipped
moving with style further down my dream.
Last night, I was chilling with Mikey.
We wrote together, drank together, smoked together,
sought for thrills that righteously put the Holy to our bender.
'Til in the end we didn't need the PA
to go up to eleven
'cause we were too busy living
to be concerned about
Hell or Heaven.

I’ve noticed NYoricans, there are definitely some people who have gotten a pass since black people and Latinos all grew up in the same neighborhoods. For example Big Pun, Fat Joe, etc. So it’s a taught behavior that his grown ass SHOULD be knowledgeable enough to know he shouldn’t say it. He shouldn’t say it period lol. But being from NY I’ve definitely given ppl a pass growing up that I shouldn’t have.
Right! I think it gets a little complicated when certain people like Fat Joe can say it with no issue but then others get called out for it. It’s interesting to see who’s “allowed to” and who’s not though

Inktober 18 - Rosie Perez
Rosie Perez is a Nyorican (New Yorker + Boricua) from Brooklyn. She started her creative journey as a dancer in the clubs of NYC who was known for getting down to hip hop, house, etc. The first time I saw her was in the film Do The Right Thing, then followed her career as an actress. She has been an actress lending her voice and physical performance in over 60 films, documentaries, and TV shows. Because she is such an amazing dancer she also worked as one of the Soul Train dancers, and has done choreography for Heavy D, Bobby Brown, LL Cool J, Diana Ross, and Broadway. And now she's an author and a director who has written about her experience, mental health, and has been an advocate for Puerto Ricans. This is Rosie from the famous opening credits of.....you remember that movie?
