New York Times Lens: South Africa’s Pantsula Dancers Bring Life to the Streets
Whitney Richardson from New York Times Lens Blog writes a beautiful feature on South Africa’s Pantsula dancers with a stellar photo portfolio from South African photographer Chris Saunders, with whom NOT collaborated with in our ‘NOT x Chris Saunders’ 2014 project.
I was so pleased to see this feature, as these brilliantly creative and energetic dance crews were my primary inspiration to travel to Johannesburg two years ago. Chris Saunders has spent the last six years getting to know the Pantsula culture and photographing dance crews from all over Johannesburg.
Whitney Richardson: “The performances of pantsula, like many art forms rooted in street culture, are typically responses to cultural and political issues in the communities. When a state of emergency was declared in South Africa in the mid-1980s, pantsula allowed male dancers to bond over their shared experiences under apartheid. If that sounds reminiscent of early B-boy culture of the South Bronx, it’s no accident. "
Uniform and costume, theatre and the everyday, energy and statuesque stillness, personality and solidarity. I hope all the world can enjoy in person, one day, the brilliant style and movement of these dance crews.
I pulled my most favorite photos here, view the full article here.
