Trudy Ring at The Advocate:
New York State Attorney General Letitia James has advised health care providers in the state that failing to provide gender-affirming care to transgender minors violates New York antidiscrimination law.
Donald Trump issued an executive order last week titled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” targets the use of puberty blockers, hormone therapies, and surgeries for anyone under 19, referring to them as “chemical and surgical mutilation.” It directs federal agencies to rescind policies supporting such treatments, withdraw funding from institutions that provide them, and enforce existing laws limiting access to these procedures. This comes even though these procedures are endorsed by every major medical organization. The order requires the Department of Health and Human Services to review and revise medical guidelines related to gender-affirming care. It specifically singles out the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and its Standards of Care, calling it lacking in “scientific integrity.” HHS is instructed to publish a review of the existing literature on gender dysphoria and develop alternative guidelines, while agencies like the Department of Justice are tasked with investigating providers and enforcing stricter legal measures against what the order terms “deceptive practices.” In the wake of the order, NYU Langone, a New York City hospital, canceled appointments for some young trans people seeking care, The New York Times reports. Two families told the Times their children’s appointments to receive puberty blockers had been canceled. The Times sought comment from NYU Langone, but a spokesperson declined.
In an open letter posted online Monday, James referred to a temporary restraining order stopping the Trump administration from freezing all federal funding. The Department of Justice issued the required notice of compliance with the order, which James quoted. “The notice states that ‘federal agencies cannot pause, freeze, impede, block, cancel, or terminate any awards or obligations on the basis of the OMB memo, or on the basis of the President’s recently issued Executive Orders,’ such as those targeting DEI programs and gender affirming care for minors. The DOJ Notice further states that this prohibition ‘applies to all awards or obligations,’ including those made to grant recipients such as hospitals, non-profits, or other organizations or entities, and also applies to future grants of federal assistance.” “Regardless of the availability of federal funding, we write to further remind you of your obligations to comply with New York State laws, including those that prohibit discrimination against individuals based on their membership in a protected class, such as sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, race, creed, color, national origin, citizenship or immigration status, military status, disability, or marital status,” she continued. “Electing to refuse services to a class of individuals based on their protected status, such as withholding the availability of services from transgender individuals based on their gender identity or their diagnosis of gender dysphoria, while offering such services to cisgender individuals, is discrimination under New York law.” Puberty blockers are often given to cisgender people for treatment of early-onset puberty, endometriosis, and other conditions.
God Bless New York AG Letitia James (D) for standing up for gender-affirming care for trans minors in the Empire State. Donald Trump’s anti-trans Executive Order 14187 belongs in the bin!

Story Pile: Elfen Lied
Back in 2006, Kim Manning, the programming director of Adult Swim, said that there was an anime she was an avid fan of, had watched all in one sitting, and wanted to know if they could air it on Adult Swim. Adult Swim, an adult-oriented channel for adult-oriented animation, resolved that under Broadcast Standards and Practices, the series would need to be so extensively edited that it would be rendered unintelligible. According to Kim on a now-missing messageboard, the series ‘would have been cut to shreds.’
That series was Elfen Lied.
If you’ve never watched it, you probably know Elfen Lied as a punchline mentioned by other anime commentators, of a needlessly gory anime series, constructed of the nastiest edgy excesses of early 2000s anime.
It is one of my favourite anime.
Content Warning: Elfen Lied is a horror anime from 2004 that includes themes of gore, child endangerment, public incontinence, childlike minds in mature bodies, a form of incest, cruelty to animals, pet death, parental neglect and child sexual assault. This anime starts — more or less — with a nude woman wearing a metal mask decapitating another woman to use her body as a human shield and it gets more or less worse from there. This is an anime that wants to consider racism and genocide from the perspective of a Japanese author in 2003. I cannot stress enough that this is an anime that has a bunch of nasty stuff in it and that nasty stuff is not being obscured by inference, but rather explicitly focal. This series is a big fucking downer.
Spoiler Warning: I’m going to talk about events that only come to meaning in the whole of Elfen Lied which necessitates spoiling the whole series, and particularly a part of the mystery narrative the story keeps obscured until the last episode.
Alright, plot in summary. First things first, we have Kouta, a boy, returning to a rural part of Japan to live with his cousin as part of his studies or whatever, a pretty common trope from anime at the time, with the abundance of Ronin harem anime inspired by Love Hina. While he and his cousin Yuka are walking the beach, they find an unconscious girl with horns, or cat ears, in the vein of the popular Catgirl Outsider that’s been popular in anime since… jesus, Urusei Yatsura was 1978, anyway. The cute girl, seemingly incapable of meaningful conversation, says only the word ‘Nyu’ and they take her home with them to care for her, whereupon they go through a range of very common ‘mysterious girl from nowhere’ tropes you saw in anime in the time.
Except Nyu is really quite helpless compared to the standard style and instead of things like comically eating soap or whatever, she demonstrates a near inability to do anything, including holding her bladder. They have to teach her how to eat food, they try to teach her about bathing, and clothes, and then Nyu breaks a momento of Kouta’s (since it made him sad and she wanted to stop him from being sad), prompting him to yell at her, and her to run off into the night.
And then the completely unhinged government assassins get involved.
The lede I’m burying and the lead this series is loading, though, is that before all those events are shown we see a government facility where Obviously Nyu was being kept before all this. She was being suspended in a metal cage and kept from contacting anything, in a big metal mask that kept her from seeing anything, and there were rules about never letting anything enter that space, nothing ever to be dropped on the ground. One day, someone dropped something and she proceeded to kill them, then use them as a tool to break out, and in the process got shot in the head with a Barrett 50 cal gun. That is to say (checks notes) a big gun.
They’re doing this because Lucy is a Diclonus, a human variant with uh, psychic powers? She has multiple extra, invisible arms, with hands and all, that are super-powered and super fast, that she can use to wreck shop around her. Bulletproof at range and deadly within two meters, Lucy is an unprecedented and impossible monster who is hard to affect because she can treat even small mundane objects as immensely dangerous. In her escape there are numerous shots of her using pens to kill people, for example.
She survived the shot in the head, but the damage basically gave her Split Personalityism where one part of her was an infant that needed constant babying and one part of her was uh, the walking apocalypse. Kouta and Yuka, at first unaware of her other half, Lucy, try to care for Nyu and rescue her from growing complexity of their lives that grow to incorporate a runaway child, and the various attacks on their home and life that come from housing Nyu.
I’m simplifying.
Through this story, Kouta and Yuka and Lucy and Nyu have various interactions that involve getting frustrated with one another, building up problems, then resolving them and the tension in the series that it’s ramping up to is that this is all while more of these Diclonuses (Diclonii?) come out and we see more of how this facility has been trying to contain this situation. The Diclonus are an existential threat to humanity, since they can contaminate non-Diclonus humans to have Diclonus children. Those children, known as Silpelets, are always girls, and sterile. The only Diclonus capable of diverting non-Diclonus reproduction into making more Diclonus is Lucy, a Diclonus Queen.
What’s more, all these special babies being born with superpowers, aside from the ones that were being killed shortly after birth after confirming they were Diclonus, all grow up really messed up and violent and hostile. Which the doctors assume must be because they have no proof of any Diclonus growing up as anything but a horrible monster person. Based on this, the researchers assume that all Diclonus are fundamentally bad, genetically even, and must be exterminated for the good of humanity, no matter the cost of other human lives.
But what if, eh.
After all we’ve tried isolating and murdering them and they all wind up really bad, what other options do we have?
Anyway, flash back to Lucy’s childhood! And this is where things get fucked up because we get to see that Lucy was a pretty nice little kid who got bullied for having horns. Then she got isolated and put in an orphanage and bullied, and when that wasn’t enough, a child from the orphanage beat and killed her pet dog, which was her tether to trying to be kind. This is the kind of anime where you cheer for when the monster kills a room full of children, by just making sure it’s very clear that these children are committing a very normal kind of cruelty and think they’ll get away with it.
Lucy then runs out into the wilds to live as a wild child where she makes a friend and surprise! It’s Kouta! This is all building up to the big twist of the series where the reveal is the reason why Kouta’s family are dead is because Lucy, as a child, known at the time as Kaede, saw him with his cousin, and immediately lashed out as a girl who kinda sorta liked a boy but also had the powers of a person-sized woodchipper, and turned his parents and little sister into a milkshake, so abruptly, so wholly, that she 404’d Kouta’s memory of the entire traumatising incident. And what were people around him going to say? “Sorry kid, your family were made into a special effect by an angry ghost while a little girl hollered at you about you lying to her about your cousin being a hot girl.”
Oh, the pieces at work here.
I’m told the manga Kouta doesn’t forgive Lucy-Nyu, but anime Kouta does.
Anyway, Kouta remembers this when he watches Lucy kill someone else, and suddenly has a big ole flashback and this is all happening while the initiative sending soldiers to kill them all has popped their own baby dangerous Diclonus (a Silpelet technically) out of storage and wants to use her to kill Lucy. The finale involves whole missiles being launched around as two terrible Diclonii have a war in the name of responding to an emotional need (approval from a father figure, revenge against that abusive father figure, or protecting a love interest), and in the end, pretty much everyone is dead or missing. The initiative kinda fails, with an open ended question of what comes next for them, Nyu is missing, and Kouta, Yuka and Mayu (the little girl from earlier) are living together as uni students.
Then Kouta opens a door and hears Nyu and the series ends.
Alright, that’s a lot, and it might be at this point you’re left wondering: Hey, Talen, this all sounds like it makes the experience of watching this horror anime really shitty. Like this isn’t just material that’s distressing and horrifying within the general play boundaries of horror media, but there’s a bunch of stuff in here that’s genuinely triggering, and one might imagine, unnecessary to the story.
And like, I skipped over a lot of things. Like, I skipped over the way that one of the ‘heroic’ characters of the story, Bando, introduces himself by gleefully punching a defenseless woman in the face. I didn’t talk about Nana at all, as a Diclonus struggling for parental approval while being functionally dumped in a box on a street corner, and the repeated abuses she suffers at the hands of both the Initiative and Lucy. I didn’t even talk about Mayu’s involvement in the story which starts with her on the run from her sexually abusive stepfather, and all of those things are part of the broader complexities of the middle of the story. Mariko was completely absent from my summary. I just gave you the premise and the button, really.
Sometimes when I talk about Anime, I use the phrase ‘Anime Bullshit’ to refer to a general collection of tropes and choices that are common to the Anime genre that I don’t necessarily like but it’s easy to disregard or discard as part of the overall whole. Part of the problem with Elfen Lied as a discussion, in that unlike other anime which are, for example, heavily fanservicey or silly about ages, or an excess of tits, or the way that the anime just has a character who’s a sex pest the story treats as a delightful comic relief, the elements here are not really readily discarded or put under the heading of ‘bullshit.’ It isn’t something you just flip past to get to the ‘real’ story, because like it or not, the horrible and triggering and transgressive elements of Elfen Lied are part of the story. It is a work of horrible events and abusive violence, and it shows that as part of the story, because that’s what the story is about.
The two particular points that I think cross where I think most of my friends’ lines are that the pet abuse sequence, and a direct reference to child sexual assault. The latter is handled reasonably tastefully for what it is: We see silhouettes, it’s made very clear what’s happening, and we see a reaction. It’s presented in bright, contrasting shapes and it’s not presented to titillate. The pet abuse sequence is however treated like another story might treat the tragic death of a person. In this sequence, a bully kicks a dog across the room into a wall, then uses a vase to beat the dog to death off-screen. We don’t get to escape that, though, just as Lucy-Nyu-Kaede — the dog’s caretaker! — is restrained in place.
And then she uses the power she already had and knew she had and kills the bullies, who again, are orphan children.
This is a pretty interesting challenge point in that it’s kind of hard to pitch ‘this series legitimately made me feel good about the murder of orphans’ especially when in hindsight well, yeah, what was in place to stop these orphans bullying other orphans and how do we address this problem? Yes, the orphans were terrible little shits, but what made them bully? What made them feel they were free to bully? What left them with the means and opportunity to kill a dog in a classroom? None of these factors are the orphan’s fault. This is a failure of the world that was something people chose to make, and the orphans are responding to the factors around them reasonably, as is Lucy in that moment.
But god damn.
Okay but why do I love it?
There is a purity and intentionality to what Elfen Lied is doing, even as an anime. The creator, Mamoru Kanbe, who seems well on the way to being a patron saint of challenging manga being impossible to properly convert into anime, bemoaned cutting a character from this manga, and the way that the story needed to be changed to make it ‘work’ in the time and budget necessary. That means that whatever Elfen Lied the anime was going to be, from the start, it was never going to be Elfen Lied, The Manga, The Anime. Thanks to that choice, then, the anime had to be its own thing with its own reasons for things, its own choices that still involved the same or similar story pieces moving in the same way with the same general direction.
There’s also something to be said for the way this anime can do things that you just can’t do with other media forms, not at this price point and not in this form. There are scenes of special effects that can be rendered only because this is an adult animation, a series of drawings that don’t need to worry about safely handling things like guns or stunt actors or even just the sheer unfeasibility of showing some of the spectacle of meat, blood and metal violence it does. This anime gets to look amazing at what it’s doing, even as a modestly budgeted show with a lot of limitations on what they could execute on from the director’s vision.
It’s not hard to draw a connection between my love of Elfen Lied and my love for the Yandere archetype. I mean, one of the pictures in that article is from Elfen Lied. It’s a tiny bit of a misnomer there, though, because in that article I praised the Yandere as a violent, dangerous person who has it under control, and Lucy very much does not have it under control. There’s a voice in her head telling her to kill everyone, which rings in my mind of the challenges that people who hear voices have to deal with when they want to be taken seriously — that it’s something people who struggle with have to struggle with alone because the mere presence of the problem is treated as a sign of its inevitable victory over one’s own control. I really like Lucy, and I understand that feeling of containing violence at all costs while still recognising that there is an unfairness in the world that you have an obligation to act on.
Once upon a time I imagined part of what Elfen Lied was ‘doing’ was a deliberate attack on what anime at the time was doing. To me, it represented a sort of deliberate, antagonistic attack against anime tropes of the 00s that were either stale or deployed thoughtlessly. I don’t know how true that is now, and I don’t imagine it’s anything I could ever actually prove. That’s not even important any more; the fact that I saw it as a sort of attack on Love Hina and similar anime isn’t any less true now that I recognise that it doesn’t have to be intentional.
This series is by all accounts, a commercial failure. It only screened on ‘Satellite’ in Japan, which I understand to be a less financially rewarding avenue than broadcast TV. Its manga never got an English translation, until 2019, 15 years after the series was well out of the public mind. It is a bloody, gnarly little gem of its time and it doesn’t even have the luxury for a lot of transgressive, violent, gory, sexualised media of its time for being what people might call ‘a good time.’ It is a tortured story about suffering and part of its endurance, I fear, is just in how unpleasant it is in all of its parts.
Man, I even went the whole thing without really underscoring the way that the whole Kouta/Yuka incest thing is just positively boring in the greater context of the story. I mean, c’mon, the Queen of England was fucking her cousin a few short slutty years ago, it’s hardly a scandal if these fake adults do it.
Anyway, the OP is amazing, the ED is a banger, and it’s possible that media can do things that are bad and transgressive and shocking while still being excellent works that connect to us very deeply. Maybe it’s okay to look at a gory murder story about bad things and not try and find some way to reinvent Catholocism to justify enjoying it. It’s possible that media can feature terrible things and even consider whether or not they’re good and if they feel good, and how they can feel good even if you can maintain your sense of reality outside the story and recognise that hey, maybe I can handle the idea of media not 1:1 representing what I think should be normal!
This is an anime about committing genocide. Successfully! By the end of the story, the Diclonus are definitionally a fundamental danger to humanity, as a byproduct of all the ways that humans dealt with that first encounter. The Diclonus, very seriously, are an endangered species that has every reason to treat humanity as an existential threat, which means, from humanity’s perspective, that’s what the Diclonus are now. A self-made self-justified genocide and the genesis for all of it is that these Diclonus were bullied in a way that is, in the setting, completely normal, completely natural, and nobody even wants to try and address it. In the world of Elfen Lied, the society is set up to make monsters out of people who are born with power, because they are different, and there is no imagined way to guide that power away from existential violence.
It is a world where it is easier to genocide a human species than it is to emotionally care for your daughter.

Biography | Playlist | Connections
Ashton, 32, is a astrophysics PhD student at NYU, often teaching bachelor lectures as part of his post-graduate program alongside his research. He's been in New York for the last 4 years, renting in the Wexley in #306 ever since. Before that, he had spent a bulk of his time with the US marines, fresh out of high school, following his father's footsteps, taking his Physics bachelors and masters while serving. A mishap of a mission left him the only survivor of his team, suffered a bad injury and he stepped away from being a marine raider for good. His father was a military pilot though he died in combat and Ashton was mostly raised by his mother, an elementary school teacher, growing up in a small town in Minnesota. Moving to New York was hard but he needed to find something else to do with his life, to prove that he isn't completely useless yet.

Headcanons
Starting with the military, Ashton applied to the marines very early on before getting accepted into the Special Ops as a CSO and Marine Raider. Was in service for about a decade before leaving it all behind.
Ashton is always in this serious mode, small smiles come by only ever so often and fun is a hard concept to grasp. Few can bring that side of him back.
Despite a few years in, he finds it hard to decide on the mundane things in life. He has no preferences for anything really. If you ask him what his favorite food is, he probably wouldn’t know how to respond. He can’t even decide his favorite food, let alone everything else in his life. He has one constant in his life and that’s enough for him.
Being young and dumbly spontaneous, he had a tattoo on his left forearm of the solar system at 18 to just be able to look at something and feel. Remember that there are things so much bigger than themselves.
Ashton teaches- taught the bachelor’s classes once in a while and the students will often gossip on the military vibes the class had. And those that couldn’t handle it dropped the class, but the ones that do stay on, often come out of it thankful that they did.
The Outbreak brought him back into his military instincts, trying to help out where he can to protect the building still standing in protecting them, but Ashton is also one to be more willing to go out, to scout, to scavenge.
Weirdly enough, he’s still working on his research paper, apocalypse be damned, he was finishing this residency and research paper one way or another. Or perhaps he just needed some kind of normalcy, to keep moving, because he knows the idleness will destroy him.
Ashton back in his military days was a skilled jet pilot and a good shot with the highest qualified level of marksmanship. Now if only he had a plane and a gun…
His apartment is a library of its own, well, if you’re ever looking for a book to learn about Kepler’s second law of planetary motion.

Easton hoped he would move through this life without incident, without anything that would shake up his whole world, but nobody gets what they really want.
Easton's world was mundane, ordinary even. The son of two Polish immigrants with a younger brother never screamed unique for him. He was just one of many in school as a child. His parents did the best they could, but they would often work long hours. Thankfully, he had his younger brother Ezra in his life to make the days less ordinary.
Despite the pressure he felt from the outside, Ezra always seemed to take his stress away effortlessly. While Easton felt lost in the universe, Ezra always seemed sure of himself. That's what was the worst about his accident. At fourteen years old, Ezra not only insisted on becoming involved in school sports but demanded it in hopes to integrate himself more. Eventually their parents caved and he was able to start playing football for their high school, excelling in it almost immediately.
It wouldn't be much longer until Ezra experienced the last blow, literally. A usual game, just like the others before, that ended up with his brother facing up on the turf. As a precaution they went to the hospital, but was diagnosed with nothing more than a simple head injury and sent home without further testing. Days later, in the middle of the school day an ambulance arrived to take the younger James brother to the hospital.
It was an undiagnosed traumatic brain injury from the blow to his head. If it had been caught early enough, Ezra would have been fine, but without a CT scan to diagnose the injury, his brain was left to bleed and the pressure caused him to seize and lose consciousness. Ezra never woke up after that. At sixteen years old, Easton became an only child.
The hospital took his parents aside, offered them a measly 500,000 that went as quickly as it came, to avoid a lawsuit and without knowing anything else, they accepted. It didn't matter what payout the James family received, it didn't take away their loss. Easton couldn't understand what had happened, that he lost his brother from a stupid mistake. After that, Easton was done living a life of uncertainty.
He became obsessed with his brother's case, even if it would never bring back his brother he learned the mistake they had made and he enraged. The system failed them and he would do anything to make sure that wouldn't happen again.
Studying for the rest of his high school years, he rose academically to make sure that he could get into the best school, the best programs so that he could become a doctor that would be more diligent than those who treated his brother. His parents watched their oldest go from a soft young boy to a toughened man. He had gotten into the University of Maryland without trouble and dedicated all his time and studies to prepare for medical school.
All that hard work paid off and he accepted a position at the NYU medical school. Vindication was within reach and even if time passed, Easton never forgot about Ezra and what happened. He had seen numerous cases in school of those with a head injury, each one of them correctly diagnosed and they left the school with their lives which was never offered to Ezra.
Easton was about ready to graduate, but his best friend suggested a road trip to upstate New York for one last celebration of fun before they all went their separate ways with their residencies. However, a fallen tree would derail their plans.
Through the woods, Easton lost his friend and managed to be discovered by people who helped him and took him to a place that he was safe. He felt like he was losing his brother again when they told him that there was no way out of this place he had stumbled upon and now he faces the same pain he felt all those years ago.
Now, he's been hearing his brother's voice at night and slowly he's going mad.

Revolutionizing Cinema: The Future of Scriptwriting
The art and craft of developing scripts in the movie industry are experiencing a substantial evolution, largely driven by advancements in technology and new methodologies. This transformation is altering how filmmakers, producers, and directors handle pre-production, making the process more streamlined and enhancing creative partnerships. By exploring cutting-edge techniques, we delve into emerging trends, evaluate their impacts on pre-production practices, and discuss best practices for crafting impactful future-driven film narratives.
AI: Shaping the Future of Screenwriting
AI-powered tools are leading the charge, transforming scriptwriting by analyzing audience trends and suggesting plot structures. By refining the creative process, AI enables writers to focus on enriching story depths and character arcs instead of mundane tasks. Platforms with AI algorithms forecast audience engagement, assessing a script's potential market success, which proves extremely advantageous for filmmakers aiming to create resonant content. However, a challenge persists in harmonizing AI contributions with the writer's authentic voice, ensuring the storytelling remains genuine while embracing technological advantages.
Immersive Experiences: Multi-Dimensional Storytelling
Incorporating Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Extended Reality (XR) in storytelling has unveiled new perspectives in scriptwriting. Filmmakers are now designing narratives that involve spatial and sensory components, crafting interactive stories that deliver rich emotional experiences. Screenwriters are encouraged to develop scripts that incorporate these elements, moving beyond conventional storytelling to formats where viewers are active participants rather than just observers, fostering a profoundly immersive experience.
Initiatives like the NYU Production Lab offer essential opportunities for up-and-coming artists to refine their scripts. These collaborative spaces allow participants to engage in discussions spanning artistic integrity and market-oriented views. Such programs foster a community that exchanges insights and nurtures creativity, balancing new storytelling approaches with commercial viability. Artists produce scripts that are not only engaging but also market-ready, creating synergy between creativity and industry needs.
Technological Advancements in Pre-Production
Innovation greatly influences script development during pre-production, with automation tools like Filmustage reimagining script breakdowns. These tools streamline the workflow by identifying necessary props, cast, and locations, reducing manual mistakes. Additionally, digitally connected storyboarding techniques provide dynamic visual aids that adapt with script changes. This facilitates real-time collaboration among writers, directors, and designers, ensuring visual renderings stay true to the script’s narrative.
Despite these advancements, modern scriptwriting presents challenges. Achieving a balance between creative originality and data-driven commercial goals remains a significant obstacle. Filmmakers are encouraged to embrace data-driven tools without compromising their unique voice. Furthermore, integrating new technologies like VR and XR into established workflows requires extensive training and adaptation, adding complexity for filmmakers. Nonetheless, these challenges offer opportunities to expand creative horizons, especially through fellowships or labs that provide mentorship and insights into market dynamics.
In conclusion, script development in the filmmaking realm is being transformed by innovative techniques. Filmmakers who welcome AI, immersive methods, and collaborative environments, while remaining open to learning and adapting to new technologies, can push forward in this competitive field. This willingness to evolve leads to streamlined pre-production processes and storylines that captivate audiences worldwide. As technology progresses, those storytellers who adeptly integrate these advancements will reshape cinematic narratives and steer the future of filmmaking. Innovating new methods and fusing them with enduring storytelling abilities will secure filmmakers' standing in this ever-changing industry.

BLAIR CHRISTINE HARCOURT
AGE: 25
BIRTHDAY: April 30, 1999
RELATION: Half sibling
TYPE: Solo
GENDER: Ciswoman
PRONOUNS: She/Her
ORIENTATION(S): Lesbian
FACE CLAIM: Rachel Zegler
JOB/SCHOOL
GRADE: Masters
MAJOR: Musical Theater
MINOR: Piano Performance
ABOUT
Growing up a hop, skip and a jump from New York City gave Blair a fascination with the bustling metropolis from the time that she was a little girl. For as long back as she can remember, she’d spend at least one weekend evening a month being dragged on the Metro North train into Manhattan where her parents would take her and her sister to see some kind of show. Music was something that was ingrained in Blair from the get go. Every time they’d go see a Broadway show, an opera, or the New York Philharmonic, Blair always sat rapt with attention. It was a difficult feat for a little girl, but Blair was utterly captured by the magic of the performers onstage. One could say that it was ingrained in her DNA– Her mother, a retired opera singer, would coach her to make sure young Blair didn’t damage her voice. That was Blair’s bonding point with her mother, and initially what made them inseparable.
High school was extremely difficult for Blair, who found herself crumbling under the conservative, oppressively wealthy nature of her Connecticut suburb. The only solace she found was in music: specifically, playing and singing. She was enrolled in piano lessons as a young child, and it was her solace and saving grace throughout stressful teenage years of trying to figure out exactly who she was and what she wanted. She dated on-and-off a boy who ruined most of her self-confidence, something that Blair didn’t really get back until she was in college. She mostly went ignored, aside from being known as the “quiet music girl” who didn’t speak unless it was on a stage. She landed every lead in every school musical, and spent her summers training at Broadway camps in New York City.
When it came time for college, the only option possible was for Blair to go to New York. Between NYADA, NYU and AMDA, she had her work cut out for her, especially when she was accepted into all three. Blair’s initial choice was to go to NYADA, but she found that she was unhappy there. The focus on musical theatre was good, but she wanted to become a more well-rounded musician and found herself slipping back to her classical and operatic roots. So, in her sophomore year, she made the switch into NYU Steinhardt’s program in musical theatre, and took a minor in piano performance. She found herself much happier there, and started to really come out of her shell.
It was at NYADA that Blair met her first real girlfriend, Elise. Blair was naive to an extent– she truly thought that she and Elise were going to be something special. It got serious enough for Blair that she took Elise home to an unofficial high school reunion, thinking her suddenly realized sexuality would be welcomed and accepted. Instead, Blair found herself at the helm of a massive cyber bullying bout, in which her social media accounts were inundated with hate messages. Her private school clique effectively ditched her, and it took quite the toll on Blair. To make matters worse, Elise shortly after informed her that they were “just a phase” for her, and she wasn’t interested in much more. Blair effectively ended their flirtationship, but was presented with an entirely different issue: she had to come out to her family.
Blair’s relationship with her family is nothing if not strained, and it’s part of the reason why she’s so happily living in New York. Her mother fell into the “helicopter parent” category, while her father was always too busy to bother with Blair and her sister– at least, until his alcohol-induced rage transferred from his wife to his daughters. It was after a particularly rough day at work for him and he’d had too much to drink one summer night when he came after Blair at a family dinner, who in a fit of ire, blurted out that she was a lesbian. That was the end of her perfect Stepford family, as Blair was thrown out of their house immediately. Since then, Blair moved to LA to be with her beloved cousins and takes solace in the fact that she is loved and accepted by another facet of her family.

New York stands out for finance and media, but its cost of living can be prohibitive. Texas offers a middle ground with its vibrant job market and affordable real estate options.
Educational Opportunities: From Schools to Top Universities

For Canadian families, ensuring access to quality education is a top priority. Here’s a look at the best educational options across these states.
Florida’s Education System
Florida has over 12 universities, with the University of Florida and Florida State University leading the way. For families with younger children, Florida is home to many highly-rated public and private schools, with excellent STEM programs across various districts.
Texas’s Leading Universities
Texas boasts some of the nation’s top universities, including the University of Texas at Austin and Rice University. The state is known for strong programs in engineering, business, and computer science, making it a great destination for families looking for academic excellence.
California’s Academic Excellence
California is home to world-class universities such as Stanford, the University of California (UC) system, and the California Institute of Technology. It is also a leader in progressive education reform, with numerous charter schools and public education options emphasizing STEM education from an early age.
New York’s Prestigious Schools
New York boasts a diverse array of educational institutions, including Columbia University, Cornell University, and New York University (NYU). The state is also a pioneer in arts education, with top-tier arts-focused high schools and programs across the city.
Educational Comparison
While all four states offer strong academic opportunities, California and New York stand out for their prestigious higher education institutions. Texas, however, provides the best balance between affordability and academic quality, particularly in public universities.
Real Estate Trends: Where to Invest or Relocate

Florida
Florida’s real estate market is booming, particularly in cities like Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. The influx of remote workers and retirees has driven housing demand, resulting in significant appreciation. Coastal properties remain premium, but inland cities offer more affordable options for families.
Texas
Texas remains a hotspot for real estate investment. Cities like Austin have seen exponential growth, driven by tech companies and an influx of new residents. Despite recent price hikes, Texas still offers relatively affordable housing compared to other major states. Suburban developments around Houston and Dallas provide ample space and family-friendly communities.
California
California’s real estate market is among the most expensive in the U.S., especially in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. While prices have moderated slightly, demand for homes in coastal areas remains high. Families may find more affordable housing in inland cities like Sacramento or Riverside, but high property taxes are a factor to consider.
New York
New York City's real estate market is famously expensive, but suburban areas around the city, such as Westchester and Long Island, offer more space and slightly lower costs. For those considering a permanent move, rental prices have stabilized post-pandemic, but homeownership remains a costly pursuit.
Real Estate Comparison
For affordability and growth potential, Texas and Florida lead the way. California and New York offer more prestigious neighborhoods but come with significantly higher price tags. Texas is ideal for families looking for larger properties and suburban life, while Florida offers great coastal options.
Best Neighborhoods for Families and Safety

Florida
Some of the top family-friendly neighborhoods in Florida include Coral Gables in Miami, Winter Park near Orlando, and Tampa’s Westchase. These areas boast excellent schools, parks, and low crime rates.
Texas
Texas offers numerous family-friendly suburbs like The Woodlands near Houston, Frisco outside Dallas, and West Lake Hills near Austin. These neighborhoods are known for their excellent school districts and strong community support.
California
California’s best family neighborhoods include Irvine in Orange County, Palo Alto in Silicon Valley, and Carmel Valley in San Diego. Safety and top-tier schools make these areas popular among families, though they come at a premium cost.
New York
For families seeking space and safety, areas like Scarsdale, Larchmont, and Long Island’s North Shore are ideal. These neighborhoods offer top-rated schools, spacious homes, and low crime rates.
Safety Policies and Quality of Life
Safety is a top concern when relocating. All four states have relatively low crime rates in suburban areas, but urban centers like Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, and New York City require more vigilance. However, these states invest heavily in community policing, neighborhood watch programs, and urban renewal initiatives to keep residents safe.
Top Places to Visit: A Family-Friendly Perspective

Florida
Florida’s theme parks, such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, are perfect for family vacations. Nature lovers can explore the Everglades, while beachgoers enjoy the pristine shores of Clearwater and the Keys.
Texas
Texas offers a blend of history and modern attractions, from the Alamo in San Antonio to the Space Center in Houston. Outdoor enthusiasts will love Big Bend National Park and Hill Country’s natural beauty.
California
California is home to iconic destinations like Disneyland, Yosemite National Park, and the Golden Gate Bridge. For families, the beaches of Southern California and the museums of San Francisco provide endless entertainment.
New York
New York City offers the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and a wealth of museums and theaters. Outside the city, the Adirondacks and Niagara Falls provide scenic escapes for nature-loving families.
Conclusion: Which State is Right for You?

Each state offers unique advantages for Canadians, whether you’re considering economic opportunities, education, real estate, or travel. Texas and Florida provide the best balance between affordability and growth potential, while California and New York offer world-class educational institutions and exciting urban living, though at higher costs.
When it comes to family vacations, Florida’s theme parks and beaches make it a top choice, while California’s natural beauty and Texas’s historical landmarks ensure a memorable trip. Whether you’re looking to relocate or simply visit, the U.S. has much to offer Canadians seeking adventure and opportunity.

HEADCANONS
1.) After the events of 'Glee' Dave tried his best to pull himself from the depression that always seemed to find him. While he loved his hometown and the friends he did have there, he also came to realize very shortly after graduation, followed by his breakup with Blaine Anderson, that in order to do just that he needed to get away from the very place he loved. Deciding on what he wanted to do as a career, Dave applied to the University of Chicago. His acceptance came shortly after, and he began to prepare himself for his departure. He shared his plans with very few- his father, and the few people in his inner-circle. Other than that, he simply disappeared from Lima one day.
2.) The transition from such a small town into a city like Chicago was more than a culture shock for Dave, but one he took to in virtually no time. There were always things he missed about home, and there were more than a few days during which he wished someone from his hometown would manage to make their way into Illinois, but overall Dave was happy with the change. In Chicago he wasn't followed by the shadow and weight of what had happened in Lima. He was finally able to be himself, fully, unapologetically, and in ways he'd only been able to dream of in OH. After undertaking an accelerated program track, Dave graduated from the University of Chicago with honors and a double-Bachelors Degree in English and History in only 3 years.
3.) Once he graduated Dave tried to figure out what it was he wanted to do. Taking a job at a publishing company in the city as an editor. While he liked the ease and low-stress aspects of the job, it wasn't something he absolutely loved doing. After six months with the company, Dave applied to graduate school overseas, at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, UK. Within the month he received his acceptance into their Masters of English Studies program, and began his preparation for a huge transition for the second time in his life. It was with no regrets and no second-thought that Dave embarked for the UK, and he fell in love with more than just the continent during his time there. After graduating, again with Honors, he was sure that a proposal from his longtime-boyfriend Theo was on the horizon. What he got in its place, however, was hit in the face with the fact that Theo had been having an affair for nearly all three years of their relationship. When the chips had fallen, Theo had chosen the other man, leaving Dave brokenhearted, broke, and utterly alone.
4.) Within three months of their breakup, Dave had planned his relocation back to the states, unable to come to terms with the betrayal, at yet again ending up alone. After he left the UK he returned to Lima, taking a remote position with another publishing company (this one in New York), as well as a part-time distance-teaching position, helping non-native English Speakers the intricacies of the language. In some small way, Dave found himself grateful to have been back in Lima, because approximately four months after his move, his father suffered from a stroke. Despite not having planned to be in Ohio for more than a year total, Dave extended his trip by two and a half, up until his 28th birthday. That year, he learned that there was an open position with NYU, in their English department. His father's health and strength had almost nearly returned, and both he and his doctors reassured Dave they felt it was safe for him to live on his own once again. After deciding to hire a part-time Nurse to check in on his father a couple of times per week, Dave made yet another transition, into New York City.
CONNECTIONS
PAUL KAROFSKY & EMILY CALLOWAY-KAROFSKY [deceased] (PARENTS): Dave's mother Emily passed away when he was barely 13, leaving himself, Paul, and his siblings to muddle through the years relying on each other. While there were times in which their relationship proved tumultuous, ultimately the two are and have always been close. Dave stayed in Lima for 2 years after returning from the UK to care for his father, and pays for a part-time nurse to check in on him a few times per week. LILY & JAYDEN KAROFSKY (SIBLINGS): As the eldest brother, Dave has always tried to remain close with his younger siblings. While his mental health has interfered with those relationships on occasion, ultimately Dave loves his siblings more than just about anyone, and sees himself as their protector. BLAINE ANDERSON & THEO STRAYER (EX-BOYFRIENDS): Dave's split from Blaine was amicable- really, he'd known that no matter what, Blaine and Kurt seemed to have been cosmically destined for one another. He was happy for them, he was. But...That didn't manage to completely take the hurt. He's pretty over it now, and would welcome friendships with either. The split from Theo (now) occurred four years ago, though the wound is still pretty fresh to Dave. While he does his best to let go, and while he has (for the mostpart) fallen out of love with Theo, he can't help but to feel every bit of the silence that surrounds him every night as he lays down for sleep alone. KURT HUMMEL: After everything that happened, Dave and Kurt managed to cultivate a solid friendship, which has carried on into adulthood. They are both busy, but make it a point to meet up at least once every two weeks, to get coffee or dinner, catch up, and maintain the friendship. *Dave is open to close friendships with any other characters, just reach out!
