Could Cowboys Find Another Starting Safety From UConn?
Could Cowboys Find Another Starting Safety From UConn?
It was just two short years ago that a safety/cornerback from the University of Connecticut started making waves in the scouting circles. As a Dallas Cowboys fan, you know that player to be none other than #31, Byron Jones.
Jones was the talk of the scouting world at the time and certainly didn’t disappoint at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine when he put on a jaw-dropping performance. That…

5 Patriots on the Bubble
5 Patriots on the Bubble
With another stacked roster, the Patriots will once again have some hard decisions to make this summer. Some will be easier than others, but this is one professional sports team where everyone really is on a level playing ground when things kick off.
That can lead to surprises and more often than not, that means undrafted rookies making the team while draft picks and formerly promising players…

NY Giants Should Take a Flyer On Recently Waived TJ Clemmings
NY Giants Should Take a Flyer On Recently Waived TJ Clemmings
The NY Giants could look to add some offensive line depth by claiming TJ Clemmings.
According to NFL Trade Rumors, the Oakland Raiders have waived/injured offensive lineman TJ Clemmings.
Many players who are waived with injury designation are usually not ready to play right away, but most of the time, they return at some point in the season.
The Giants waived safety Darian Thompsonwith an…

Raiders Wednesday Update Week 9: Injuries, Melifonwu, Hood
Have the Oakland Raiders hit rock bottom yet this season? Not yet, though last Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills came close. The team is back to primetime this week, where they'll take on the Miami Dolphins in Florida on Sunday Night Football. The Dolphins suffered an embarrassing loss of

Oakland Raiders 2017 Draft Grade
Here is the grade for the Oakland Raiders in the 2017 NFL Draft. Every player selected by the Raiders receives a short scouting report.
The first selection for the Oakland Raiders in the 2017 NFL Draft is Ohio State Cornerback Gareon Conley. Conley brings good size and speed to position along with the versatility to play on the outside or nickel cornerback position at the next level. Conley has the talent to play in multiple different types of coverage while allowing only 37% completion rate as the number 1 corner on the Ohio State roster. However Conley shows issues with smooth transitions in press coverage an doesn’t have the fearless demeanor in run support and doesn’t play very physical but the big red flag on Conley is the supposed rape on the Ohio State campus that could lead to jail time. Conley is a huge boom or bust pick, if he stays on the field he has the speed and coverage ability to turn into a number 1 corner with lockdown potential, but if he is found guilty he very well could face jail time that could end his NFL career. The 2nd round selection for the Raiders is UConn safety Obi Melifonwu. Melifonwu is a freakishly athletic safety prospect with linebacker size and cornerback speed with tremendous production as a senior at UConn showing the speed and power to dominate as a run defending safety and speed to recover on deep passes. However Melifonwu lacks great agility in coverage is lacks great instincts in coverage and poor discipline with his eyes that allows Quarterbacks to take him out of the play. Melifonwu has tremendous speed and athleticism to play at either safety spot and could be used as a run support strong safety as a rookie or become more polished in coverage and play as a dominant free safety as a pro. The 3rd round selection for the Raiders is UCLA defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes. Vanderdoes has tremendous athleticism from the defensive tackle position with a few pass rushing moves to penetrate as a pass rusher and the strength and pad level to 2 gap and defend the run. However Vanderdoes has issues with injuries that cost him most of the 2015 season and hurt his ability to play in 2016 while showing inconsistent effort and pad level that at times took him out of plays. Vanderdoes is a boom or bust player that could turn into a dominant 3 technique for the Raiders but could easily turn into a lackluster 3 technique that will be replaced in the upcoming draft. The 4th round selection for the Raiders is Florida offensive lineman David Sharpe. Sharpe is a long and massive offensive lineman with the ability to take pass rushers out of the game with strong and active hands. However Sharpe has issues with movement with issues pulling and climbing to the 2nd level in college and shows poor pad level that allows smart pass rusher to get under his pads and move him back. Sharpe could be placed at right tackle or see snaps at one of the guard positions for the Raiders and could eventually  take over for Austin Howard or Donald Penn when they move on. The 5th round selection is Marquel Lee, linebacker from Wake Forest. Lee was ridiculously productive as a blitzing middle linebacker with 20 tackles for loss as a senior and has the length and bulk of a starting middle linebacker and tremendous instincts as a run defender and unquestioned leader of the Wake Forest defense. However he is a liability in pass coverage and lacks the elite athleticism to cover tight ends and runningbacks in man coverage and could have issues dealing with larger NFL blockers. Lee could see significant time as a 2 down middle linebacker and could be used effectively as a blitzer in pass coverage situations and has enough ability to learn to be effective in zone coverage. Lee could be effective as one of the middle linebackers in the Raiders hybrid scheme and could learn to be effective in nickel situations as a middle pass rushing threat. The first of four 7th round selections is Washington State safety Shalom Luani. Luani is a productive deep safety in the Cougars scheme with great ability to read the Quarterbacks eyes and jump routes when in zone coverage. However Luani needs to work on his tackling technique while looking for the big, punishing tackler instead of wrapping while showing issues tracking the deep ball. Luani has the versatility to play strong or free safety as a pro though he will need to show the ability to play special teams to make the Raiders roster. The next 7th round selection is Alabama State offensive tackle Jylan Ware. Ware brings very good length and athleticism, showing clean footwork in pass protection while showing the strong hands long arms to take pass rushers out of the play. However Ware lacks bulk on his frame and has some issues with pad level as a run blocker, while a lack of nasty demeanor in run blocking his level of play could hurt him early on. Ware has an uphill battle to make the roster as a rookie but he has the athleticism and size to turn into a top notch pass blocker for the Raiders if given proper time and coaching. Elijah Hood, runningback from North Carolina is the third 7th round selection for the Raiders. Hood was considered a top power back in the as the lead back for UNC during the 2015 season while seeing a significant drop in production during 2016 season. Hood is a stocky and powerful runner with good ability as a pass blocker while showing good decisive running style to be productive in a zone blocking scheme. However Hood lacks the speed and elusiveness to make big plays on the ground and seems utterly disinterested in reading the holes on the offensive line and finding space to run. Hood could take over as a powerful, pounding runner in the Raiders offensive scheme, though he will need to show the ability to play special teams early and prove his ability as a runner later on. The final selection of the Oakland Raiders is Toledo defensive tackle Treyvon Hester. Hester was productive at Toledo due to a tremendous 1st step and the athleticism to get behind guards as a pass rusher  and using his quickness and active hands to cause problems along the opposing offensive line. However Hester lacks elite length and power of an NFL defensive tackle along with inconsistent pad level that allows him to get taken out of plays. Hester could make the roster as a situational interior pass rusher in the defensive tackle rotation, but he will be facing an uphill battle to be placed on the 53 man roster. The Raiders draft is bipolar in the players selected. Every player selected in the 1st 4 rounds have huge boom or bust potential with Conley facing off the field issues that could take him out for a significant amount of time. If all players are able to play up to their ability and improve at the NFL level the Raiders could have 4 starters with their 1st 4 picks but it could easily be 4 players that are out of the NFL in 5 years. With the incredibly inconsistent draft a grade of B- is fair, though it could be an A in the coming years.
