my one and only Warden oc at present, my beloved buff elf.

Eros/1: Basil probably isn’t considered a romantic, or at the very least, not in the traditional sense. he’s also not necessarily looking for that in return, either. he doesn’t need any grand gestures or anything, and he doesn’t really make them. most things that Basil does do that could seem romantic are also things that are extended platonically, like the fact that he very much likes to make little things, like jewelry and other baubles, for any person that he cares about. 

Eros/2: sex isn’t the most important thing on a relationship but Basil really, really likes for it to be. sure it’s not the only way, but he loves the connection and intimacy that can come from it, loves how he can both lose and ground himself in a person. it’s another way to communicate, it’s a kind of trust. not to mention it can just be plain fun, ha. and like the above, it’s not something Basil reserves for romantic relationships, it can be a way to connect with others he cares about but isn’t actually ‘involved’ with (see: Zevran, mostly).

Philia/3: support has to be one of the things Basil values most in his friendships. people are there for you when you need them without making it seem fake and surface level, or like you’re burdening them or they’re doing you a favor. Basil really doesn’t ask for a lot from anyone, and he’s always there for others, always wants to be, so when he does actually need others… he hopes he’s surrounded by the right people. 

Philia/4: considering he traipsed all over lower Thedas with a very random assortment of characters and came out of it with several lifelong friendships… I’d say Basil is pretty good at befriending those who are quite different from him. ‘a Dalish elf, a chantry sister, an Antivan Crow, and the future king of Ferelden walk into a tavern’ sounds like the setup to a terrible joke, but it was Basil’s life for a good chunk of time, haha. it’s not as if there aren’t disagreements (sometimes severe ones…), but Basil tends to focus more on the common ground than the differences. 

Philia/5: Basil’s greatest wish for his friends is safety. they’ve all been through so much already, and the world continues to be increasingly uncertain and dangerous, and Basil just wants for them to be okay, to be safe, to get a damn break. they more than deserve it. and while that’s kind of a general wish for all his friends, he probably thinks about it the most when it comes to Zevran. getting and staying in contact with each other can be hard, but that right there is Basil’s best friend so… he worries. 

Storge/1: he uhhh, didn’t really get any time with them, but Basil would like to think that they would have. something about a frowned upon union they kept on out of their love for each other leads him to believe as much (or leads him to believe they can’t always judge, ha). he does have Ashalle, since she was his guardian since then, and Basil is pretty sure the same would be extended from her. because of the love and acceptance that he’s had in his life, Basil does his best to pay it forward as well.

Storge/3: parental approval doesn’t factor a whole lot into Basil’s self-worth, and I don’t just mean that because they’re, ya know… dead. because he does have some would I be making them proud? thoughts (and that extends to Ashalle also), but they’re like… not consuming or what ultimately guides him. 

Storge/4: by blood, Basil doesn’t have any siblings, but that doesn’t really mean much when living in the clan like he did, it was like having one big family around all the time, including a gaggle of sibling-adjacent folk. the closest to a brother that Basil had would have been Tamlen, and we know what happened there… Basil took it really hard, and he’s not really looking for someone else to fill the sibling void. 

Agape/1: of course Basil wants to make the world a better place, he wouldn’t be doing what he does if he didn’t. well… maybe a darkspawn taint coursing through him doesn’t leave him much other option than to be a Warden, but… he wouldn’t still be so involved in matters if he didn’t. staying ‘dead’ and doing his own stuff while that was the going belief was so much easier, no one bothered him or expected things of him. so I guess the lengths he’d go to are just that—outing himself as still alive and accessible if it means a better chance at making sure the world doesn’t crumble. 

Agape/3: he doesn’t think altruism is naive, or nonexistent for that matter, but he also doesn’t think that it’s bad or wrong to do good things because you will get something out of it in return. everyone could stand to do a little more good just for the sake of it, but if the motivation is needed of some sort of ‘reward’ then… at least the ‘right’ thing is still getting done in the end, and isn’t that what matters?

Agape/5: Basil ain’t gonna empathize with his enemies. which makes sense since like… the enemies he has aren’t really the run-of-the-mill kind, there’s not really anything redeeming about them, there’s no seeing it for their side. sure, it can get nuanced with enemies that like… actually do qualify as people unlike a lot of what he’s dealt with, but ultimately, Basil is very committed to keeping people safe, and he will go to great lengths to make that happen. 

Ludus/1: see Ludus/5 in that… I think like attracts like lol. off the rope of my head, I don’t know specifics, but I’m pretty sure Basil would use the cheesiest pickup line he could think of lmfao. he knows the lines are terrible, but when they’re followed up by the flash of the smile that he has… it doesn’t much matter what was said. so maybe that’s the real pickup truck here, his smile. he also loves to try to convince other to use the lines, and it’s almost like a game at this point to see what it takes Zevran saying to make Alistair red to the tips of his ears.  

Ludus/4: realistically Basil’s first crush was probably Tamlen. with how they close they were, it was bound to happen, and I think many in the clan would tease about it/assume there was something going on there even well after the crush had fizzled out. because really it was a rather short-lived thing, because really more than anything else, Tamlen was a friend, a brother, and that’s what stuck as the cutesy crush of a baby Basil faded (and was replaced by more actual crush crushes, and not just one burn out of that mentioned closeness).

Ludus/5: Basil is a sucker for a pretty/handsome face, they could literally say like… anything to him and there he’d be, twirling his hair around his finger lmao. but also he honestly loooves cheesy pickup lines, particularly when they’re poorly delivered. swagless cringe fail is the new sexy, apparently. 

Pragma/3: lmao no Basil’s parents are not still together, or alive for that matter (so maybe they are together in some afterlife/the Fade or whatever if you’re into those type of beliefs lol). I p much follow the Origins backstory for him as far as those things go. but from what he hears… their relationship was aspirational. or well, from what he hears, there was a lot of disapproval surrounding it, but the way the kept on, how much they loved each other despite that… that’s something goal-worthy.

Pragma/5: Basil would like to get married. it comes as a surprise to some, because Basil can be very… free with his love, so it can be hard to imagine him settling down that much. but Basil could reign it in for the right person, and marriage to that person (who he thinks he’s found)… that would be nice. Basil doesn’t think it’s too important, though. you can be sure in your love and that there is no other for you without a wedding to certify it. and maybe that’s a good mentality, because the reality of getting married seems slim when he would hate to put someone through that only for them to eventually losing him to the Calling. 

Philautia/5: more or less Basil has had the same view of himself over the course of his life, and it’s a self reflection that he is… okay with. he doesn’t think he’s anything all too special, but he is also okay with that. when Basil became a Warden, he felt like he had a little more to prove, but there wasn’t some impossibly high standard set, or really any specific one at all. there have however been some moments that have made him question himself and his abilities, but that will happen when charged with stopping a blight, and also after getting left behind in the Fade…

RANDOM FACT: Iris is really sensitive to textures and physical touch. It makes finding outfits a little difficult for her, considering Ferelden (probably) doesn't have a lot of great options in the way of textures, but because of that she got pretty good at making alterations to outfits. She is generally touch averse, though with permission, which Alistair is sure to always ask for, she's usually fine.

.:: Rory’s 2018 Inktober Masterpost ::.

Another year, another successful Inktober! That’s what, four times in a row now? What? I’m honestly still surprised at myself for not giving up after the few first haha

Also this one was a special one. Mostly because I originally wasn’t going to do it due to the state I was in at the start of this month, which was... not that good. I was exhausted, lacked motivation, and thought of Inktober as one more burden rather than the fun activity it was for me since 2015.

But then I saw everyone getting excited for Inktober, showing up their supplies and stuff... and I knew I had to just get my butt in gear. Truth is, I didn’t want to feel like miserable, and just thinking about missing Inktober made me miserable, so what the hell! Although my motivation had came back, I still was exhausted, so I sadly didn’t make the portrait as elaborate as they were these past few years.

Still. Challenge complete. Ocs of all kinds have filled my notebook, and I think I’m okay with myself.

Thank you for your never-ending support and kind words of encouragement. I keep saying it and I will never stop saying it, but you guys are seriously the utmost best <3

one of Basil’s longterm fantasies is to be a part of a Zevran/Alistair sandwich. he knows at least one half of that arrangement would be agreeable, and also like… been there, done that (frequently), would do again. just need the more bashful party to be down lmao. 

Basil is quite skilled with a bow, but really only busts it out for things like hunting. and showing off. okay… mostly showing off. other than that, he loves his daggers too much to use anything but them in a fight. but there, there’s less showing off than there used to be. his fighting style has become less flashy and more practical over time.

the first time Blackwall braided Basil’s hair for him, Basil almost wept. it’d been so long since anyone but himself did it. Zev and him would sometimes do it for each other when they were traveling together, but the times he gets to see his favorite Crow are few are far between now. such tenderness from a man that Basil knows can be so brutish absolutely melted him.

continuing on with some more dragon age, let's go for something about my Mahariel...

Basil met Thom Rainier during his travels as warden during the last blight, and they... really hit it off. but as is the nature of wardens and mercenaries, their paths went separate ways (though the thing I always is debate is... how many times did their paths cross?). then the news spread of the Hero of Ferelden's death at the end of the blight. so it makes sense why Rainier looks like he's seen a ghost when, years later, that's exactly who the 'warden contact' Hawke introduces the Inquisitor to turns out to be. and why Basil barely contains himself long enough to get Rainier alone to berate him over why he's now apparently going by the name Blackwall, because Basil knows that warden, and he knows the man in front of him, and they sure ain't the same.

3. Do they enjoy cooking?

Basil does, which really stems from how cooking went in his clan. He might not have the most advanced palate or the greatest skill, but he doesn’t think things like that are what important. Both the cooking and then the eating are a group activity, something that brings everyone together, and that’s what Basil loves. Even in the midst of stopping a blight, he liked to make everyone at camp come together to make a meal, even when they didn’t have much, even when they were all annoyed with each other. Maybe especially then. Cooking brings people together. Sharing food is one of Basil’s love languages.

7. Do they have any unusual fears?

I feel like Basil doesn’t have time for the unusual ones, ha. He has been through… so much, and it’s really taken a toll on him. He has more actual fears then he knows what to do with, with the list just continuing to grow. But if you ask him about his fears he’ll tell you things like ‘spiders. creep me out.’ or ‘birds. don’t trust ‘em.’ But then you’ll see him interacting with said fear 2 minutes later with no problem and much ???? ensues. Basil just wants to seem… normal.

17. How easily would they be convinced to do something that goes against their morals?

If there’s other options, then you’re gonna be hard pressed to get Basil to go against what he believes the right course of action is. But the thing about those type of hard decisions is that usually they crop up when Basil doesn’t have the time to fully weight out the moral consequences or exhaust all other options. Then, the easiest way to get him to make a decisions, even if it’s going against his gut, is to pose a ‘for the greater good’ or ‘causing the least harm’ argument. And then… whatever the outcome, Basil takes full responsibility, it was his choice, and now it’s guilt to feel.

20. Do they have a strong connection to their culture?

Not as strong as Basil would like, at least not any more. He always felt like he had a… peculiar relationship to some of the older members of the clan since he was born of a relationship that was looked down upon, and it made Basil feel like he’d always be a little bit on the outside, despite the fact that he still was loved and well taken care of. And then after everything went down with Tamlen and Basil left for the Wardens… he purposely tried to put more distance between himself and that part of him, kind of literally. It made being gone easier. But once things finally calm down for him, he starts trying to get back some of that connection, and he’s held on to enough parts of his culture that it’s not the biggest leap back. Also, deep connection or not, he will throw hands with anyone who dares to talk shit about the Dalish, they still ARE his people.

26. Have they met any of their heroes? Did they regret it?

Basil has met his heroes, he just didn’t know that that’s what was happening at the time. 6. Does your character have recurring themes in their dreams?

Basil doesn’t remember a lot of his dreams (the nightmares thanks to the taint are a lot more prevalent anyway, so maybe it’s better if he can’t remember), but if there’s one commonality, it’s a tendency to be in vast, open spaces.

11. In what situation was your character the most afraid they’ve ever been?

During the battle at Adamant, the moments following his decision to stay in the Fade to hold off the Nightmare so everyone else could escape. At the time he felt like it was absolutely the right decision, but once it was defeated and it was just him there, alone, trapped, it started to sink in what he’d chosen and he started to freak out (and that got… no better from there until he managed to get back out). So I guess really… the entire Fade experience. He’d take his first trip to the Fade over that one any time.

12. In what situation was your character the most calm they’ve ever been?

Some time after the above experience, standing on the battlements at Skyhold, gazing out at the scenery, Blackwall’s arms wrapped snuggly around him. The world is not yet saved, Corypheus is still out there, but in that moment, there is peace. Everything lately has been feeling a lot more manageable and doable for Basil, despite there still being a world in crisis. He keeps getting through all these other massively shitty events, he can do this too.

17. What was your character’s favorite toy as a child?

A stuffed halla! It was a pretty crude, handmade thing, but he loved it to pieces (rather literally, ha). Basil was always obsessed with real halal as a wee bab, and so someone in his clan made it for him as a gift (also to hopefully encourage to stop running off to chase them if he ‘had one of his own’ lmao).

21. If something tragic or negative happens to your character, do they believe they may have caused or deserved it, or are they quick to blame others?

If it really is his fault that something happened, Basil has no problem taking the blame for something, he wouldn’t try to put in on anyone else. He’s fairly honest, though maybe a little harder on himself than he should be when it comes to ‘blame’ (and that likely stems from feeling at least partly to blame for what happens with Tamlen and the eluvian…). But he’s also not the type of person to think that bad things are what he ‘deserves’ for choices he makes/has made.

22. What does your character like in other people?

Just to pick a couple… Ambition, even if the persons goal seems small or silly—he likes people who want to do something and therefore go out and do it. A sense of humor, people who don’t take themselves too seriously.

23. What does your character dislike in other people?

Again, stick to a couple. Constant negativity, people who seem determined to see the worst in everything. Dishonesty, seeing no problem with lying by omission (NO ONE @ him about his love interest lmfao).

26. How does your character behave around children?

Children tend to really like Basil. He’s goofy and fun, and doesn’t make them feel lesser just because they’re small. He’s not necessarily the best with babies because what are you supposed to with those, but he likes to roughhouse with older children, and always does the voices when he reads them stories. He’s that ‘cool uncle’ persona, haha(insert that pic of chris hemsworth holding his child up by the ankle).

28. How quick or slow is your character to resort to physical violence in a confrontation?

Pretty quick, lmao. Basil is not known for being a diplomat. It’s not necessarily his first course of action, he’ll give talking it out a chance, but if it seems like things are gonna come to blows, he doesn’t see the point in delaying it, and it’s better to strike first.

30. What does your character find repulsive or disgusting?

He’s mostly being dramatic, but Basil claims that a lot of Fereldan food looks like sludge and doesn’t taste much better—or taste like much of anything, really. Secondary dramatic answer is Blackwall without a beard lmfaoo.

33. In the face of criticism, is your character defensive, self-deprecating, or willing to improve?

Willing to improve, though that’s something that developed over time. He was a bit of a wild child, so he didn’t always take being reprimanded well, but having the uh, huge responsibility of, ya know… having to stop the Blight then thrust upon his shoulders shaped him up real good, real fast. Because go figure, he doesn’t know everything and he’s not invincible (contrary to what every young person tends to believe lmao), and if he wants to stay alive/save the world, he can’t continue on in the way he has been. He’s open to suggestion.
