1 out of the 10000000000 characters of Overcast Skies has been drawn! Yaay!

Pebble’s the main character so I figured I should design him first. I should also probably explain his backstory a bit, so without getting into spoiler territory: when his mother, a kittypet, gave birth to he and his siblings, her housefolk refused to keep them as they didn’t want any more cats. A few days pass and they put he and his siblings in a garbage bag and leave them on the side of the road. Pebble was the only one of them to survive. For months he’ll follow the road in hopes of getting back to his mother, but he gets lost and ends up reaching the city instead where he gets attacked and subsequently wounded by a dog. He is rescued by some ThunderClan cats and brought into their medice den. Pebble doesn’t want to join at first, as he still hopes to find his mother, but he ends up joining out of necessity as the city is too dangerous to traverse. He is named Boulderpaw, a name he finds unusual but accepts anyways. He still feels very out of place in ThunderClan as his upbringing made him a very pessimistic and stoic cat that doesn’t fully comprehend the spiritual aspects of being a warrior. As an outsider, he finds the Clans’ mannerisms and practices extremely weird and unproductive which often leads to confrontations with his clanmates. Furthermore he never fully learned how to talk speak properly, so he speaking with often comes off as frustrating as other cats struggle to understand what he’s saying and end up ignoring his thoughts altogether.  Despite all of this, he finds himself endeared by all these cats, and is determined to improve these strange society somewhat. That is, until he realizes that StarClan is doing anything in its power to kill him.

No Fear (short story)

Boulderpaw could barely contain his excitement, shivering in his eagerness as he followed his leader and medicine cat through the pines. He was close to getting his warrior name any day now. So of course when Alderstar suggested a trip to test his courage, he was happy to go along with it. 

Dawn was still some ways off, the Clan wouldn’t be awake for some time. Myrtlewing grinned sideways at Alderstar. Then they stopped at the edge of the Thunderpath.

Boulderpaw looked curiously over the edge. “Are we sneaking into Thunderclan?”

Alderstar shook his head. “Not to worry, we won’t go that far. Boulderpaw,” his voice lowered seriously. “Do you have what it takes to become a warrior of Shadowclan?”

Myrtlewing could see the lump go down Boulderpaw’s throat. “Yes.”

“Can you defeat any enemy?”

“I will try.”

“Even your own fear?”

Boulderpaw blinked. “Er…yes.”

“Wonderful,” Alderstar said with approval. “Step onto the Thunderpath.”

Boulderpaw’s eyes widened. “W-what? Why?”

“Are you afraid of it?” Alderstar asked. 

Myrtlewing stood off to the side, watching with a mix of  thrill from Boulderpaw’s fear and pride of Alderstar’s sinister demeanor. 

Boulderpaw hesitated. “No. Shadowclan isn’t afraid of stupid monsters!” He was clearly  trying to sound brave, but his voice faltered. 

“That’s right,” Alderstar nodded. He padded closer and sat, wrapping his tail around Boulderpaw. “It’s scary, probably the scariest thing you’ll go through. But then it’ll be over, and no fear or terror wil ever conquer you again!”

“Yeah!” Boulderpaw cheered half-heartedly. He moved away from Alderstar, but as he did, getting closer to the black stone river, his fur bristled higher. 

“Go further,” Myrtlewing called when he saw the apprentice had frozen only two steps onto it. 

Boulderpaw obeyed just as a monster flew past. Boulderpaw yowled, backing back toward the grass.

“Stay there!” Alderstar told him. “You’re doing great!”

“I almost died!” Boulderpaw called back. Myrtlewing wasn’t sure if he was really listening about staying back, or if terror was freezing him to the spot. 

“But you didn’t! Just stay there a little bit longer.”

Myrtlewing slunk over to his side, the reflection of the moonlight twinkling in his eyes. “How long do you think it’ll be?” he asked. 

Alderstar laughed softly. “Before he gets hit or before he comes running back?” Just then, another monster roared passed, but it was on the opposite side and well away from Boulderpaw, who hissed after it.

“Hmm. Both.”

“Two more for a hit, three for him to come back, that is if they’re not all far.”

��Okay. I say five for a hit, four for him to come back.”

Alderstar lifted his brows. “You really have high hopes for him.”

Myrtlewing shrugged as a third monster flew by. It was closer, and Boulderpaw foolishly flattened himself to the earth, afraid that the monster could see him. “I just feel like this is going to last some time.”

“How much longer?” Boulderpaw panted. “Can I stop now, please?”

Alderstar sighed with disappointment. He hung his head. “I had high hopes for you. But if you wish to come back and remain an apprentice, that’s okay.”

Boulderpaw’s eyes widened. “N-no! It’s okay!” His head swiveled quickly to check either side of him before he looked back to his oh so trusted leader and medicine cat. 

They watched a while longer, upping their bets when Boulderpaw made it past five without running back or getting hit. It was on the seventh time when it had happened. One monster was barreling toward him, and he instinctively jumped out of the way, but on the opposite side was another monster. Its round paws caught his own, and Boulderpaw screeched an ugly, horrible sound. 

He writhed on the ground, screeching and screaming, until another monster came over to silence him completely. 

They kept watching for a long moment, enjoying the tranquility of the silence, Boulderpaw’s bloodied fur shifted by the wind just as the undisturbed grass on the other side of the Thunderpath. Then Myrtlewing stood up and stretched.

“Should we head back now?”

Myrtlewing looked at the sky. “Dawn patrols will be out soon.” As they began to head back, he asked, “who do you think will find him?”

“We can give Hootpetal suggestions. Maybe Wolfburn.”

Myrtlewing laughed. “Or Blazepad.”

They padded together through the trees, tails twining together, and the rising sun warming their backs.
