“Do you like kids?”

Mason’s lip curls at the question before he hesitates, flicking his eyes over to catch the dark depths of Karthik’s gaze. He’s leaning against the opposite counter in the warehouse kitchen, his eyes on him steady, unwavering, and seemingly without judgement.

He shrugs, as if to say it was just a question. And it is just a question.

But it isn’t just anyone asking.

Mason’s fingers twitch at his side in an aborted movement, reaching for a pack of cigarettes that have long since been emptied.

How long has it been since he’d wanted a smoke?

With the purification of his crystal, it’s been easier to go without it, easier to just enjoy the beneficial effects of the detective’s company, Karthik’s impossible ability to ease the burden of his heightened senses, tame the neverending roar of their everyday into a dull murmur.

Something to do with the blood, Mason thinks, his eyes flicking away and down, down the golden slope of the other man’s neck, until he can see the flutter of his pulse. The curl of his dark hair threatens to obscure it, but Mason doesn’t need his enhanced senses to hear Karthik’s heartbeat, to track his movements from across the room.

From across the goddamn compound some days, and it’d piss him off more, if it wasn’t such a relief.

He blinks at the thought, before his lip curls again. Fuck, he needs a smoke.

“Kids don’t like me,” is what he says in response, as the other man was still waiting. Watching him, the chocolate of his iris deep enough to swallow the edges of his pupil, patient and so fucking unreadable. He lets out a scoff. “Meera didn’t, anyway.”

That seems to break Karthik out of whatever funk he was in, his brow furrowing, a frown twisting his lips. “What makes you say that?”

Mason glances back up to catch his gaze again, giving him a flat look. “I have a pretty good read on people. She wouldn’t make eye contact, wouldn’t cross the room, and flinched whenever I made a move. Doesn’t take a genius to figure that one out.”

Karthik’s frown deepens, before he glances away, breaking eye contact. He shifts on his feet, and his demeanour changes, his scent changes. Anxiety, worry. For his kid?

Shit.

“I didn’t mean to scare her,” He says, and means it. He doesn’t know why he needs Karthik to know that, to believe it, but he does. Mason really hadn’t tried anything with the kid. He’d just walked into the room, and that had been it. Kids really didn’t like him. “I’ll keep my distance in future, I promise.”

“No, it’s- it’s not that.” Karthik takes a breath, slow and steadying, shifting against the counter top. He’s got the sleeves of his shirt rolled up to his elbows, revealing the broad line of his forearms and the dark lines of hair that cross it, the muscles flexing under his grip. “She’s not - scared of you. She’s just - not good at things like that. Meeting new people.”

Mason releases a soft snort. “You don’t have to sugarcoat it for me, handsome”

Karthik’s dark eyes rise to meet his. “I’m not. She’s - a lot like you, actually. The whole world, it’s - it’s hard on her. Everything is just, too much, all at once.” He pauses again, thinking for a long moment. “It could help her, actually, talking to you.”

Help her? Talking to him? He wants to scoff again, but Karthik’s eyes on his are wide and honest, his belief in the statement clear in his gaze. Mason bites his lip, before blurting in disbelief, “You mean that.”

“I do.” The unease in Karthik’s posture has faded, a smile tugging at his lips. “And I think if you two tried again, you’d get along really well.”

Mason thinks on that for a long moment. Karthik wouldn’t have offered it if he wasn’t serious. There wasn’t a dishonest bone in his body, the man wearing his heart on his sleeve, as much as it frustrated Mason sometimes to see it.

There wasn’t a subtle bone there either, Karthik’s eyes on him bright and hopeful, almost expectant, and shit.

“This means a lot to you, doesn’t it?”

Karthik’s smile widens until his eyes crease with it, and he nods, the movement sending the dark strands of his hair dancing across his forehead. “It does.”

And of course it would. This was his kid. Nothing meant more to this man than his Meera. Christ, Mason was going to do this, wasn’t he?

Mason lets out a low groan, and Karthik - healthy and whole and beautiful - knows he’s won, his grin widening until his dimples are visible, crinkling his cheeks, and god dammit.

“Alright, fine. We’ll try it.” Karthik lets out a sound that could almost be a whoop, and Mason tilts his head back, letting out a louder, more exasperated groan. “No promises that this will work, though. Don’t get your hopes up.”

Karthik laughs, shifting forward to close the distance between them, finally, his palm wide and warm and so right as he cups the side of Mason’s neck, before leaning in to kiss him.

The kiss is chaste, sweet. Karthik’s lips are soft and warm, and all Mason feels is the heat of it, the intimacy of having him so close, his breath a soft rush against his face as Karthik draws back and runs the worn pad of his thumb along the curve of his cheek.

“Thank you, sunshine.”

Mason scoffs at the nickname, or at least he tries to, but he’s smiling, he can feel the tug of it at the corners of his mouth, despite himself. “You’ll have to make it up to me, handsome.”

Karthik matches his smile. “Oh, I can think of a few ways…”

#squad: who’s friends with who? what are the squad dynamics like?

Karthik: Currently his main friend group is ofc unit bravo. He would consider them his first honestly when they first met (even if some of them may not have thought otherwise). Is the closest friend with Nat, appericated her genuine kindness since the start but also knows shes not immune to silly jokes here and there. Rip Ava keeping track of expenses, because these two will always go antique shopping when given the opportunity.

In terms of dynamics, Karthik - unsurprisingly - would be considered the 'fun dad' of a friend group. Always tries to remain prepared for what his friends need, e.g. snacks, games, smokes, wipes, etc. But is also down to be a silly and easygoing, making jokes and keeping people's mood up.

Rahul: In terms of infamous, his friend group would be the band. Best friends since high school. It was a right place, right time when they became friends. Regardless of the heartbreak that would eventually come, he wouldn't trade those memories nor change a thing. Now with a new member to the friend group, Rahul would be doing his best to make sure August feels comfortable around them and esp around him heh.

within a friend group, Rahul would be considered the 'meditator'. Tries to keep the peace amongst friends and avoid arguments before they get out of hand. Because of this, he does end up being a sort of leader - even if he doesn't like to be one. Rather be equal with his friends then in charge. (also in an original verse (and maybe attollo) , a reason why he acts like a meditator is cause he got used to being like that with his parents...)

fragrance: what do your OCs smell like?

Karthik: hmm, i'm not entirely sure for him but i think he would have a subtle fruity and/or floral scent?

Rahul: He would have a earthy wood scent with a sweet undertone, like sandlewood. But also slight cigarette scent, 'cause he does tend to smoke on occassion.

wardrobe: what’s your OC(s) style like?

Karthik: Very light and colourful patterned shirts, tends to have a few buttons undone. Likes to a wear a good velvet blazer, probs got from an antique charity story. Usually paired with some simple shorts. He sometimes do wear those cargo shorts, because of the pockets. After all, he carries a little bit of everything - who knows when he'll need it. Prefers to wear sneakers, since he tends to be rather active. The sneakers tend to be a little worn, but still good and comfortable.

Rahul: Has a dark earthy style, with a lot of greens and browns. Usually seen with a simple jacket, a pressed shirt / loose top, and perhaps just some converse or short boots. Likes to accessorize, has a few silver chains and rings. Multiple ear and facial piercings. When on the stage/in public, prefers to keep his hair slicked back and styled. otherwise, he lets his waves free. He wears contact lenses on the stage but most other times he wears glasses. However he does prefer to wear the lenses more often, even off the stage.

lightning: who’s the most impulsive character? and who is their impulse control?

Karthik: Oh he is quite implusive. Will be the first to try and talk to some strange supernatural that was going to attack. When he has a thought/idea - theres not much thinking through and rather just go straight for it. Good thing he got Mason and Nat by his side to try and reel him in. He is head empty and go with his heart /gut.

Rahul: Now on the opposite side, Rahul is not very implusive and more often than not, will try reign his friends in if needed. But doesn't like to force control with them, since is more on the chill side.

in the original verse, his sister was definitely much more implusive then him. more often then not, he had to deal with the aftermath when she ended up in another fight. He is chill and carefree, whilst she first acts with her fists. They help to balance each other out.

I am obsessed with Karthik and Meera and their sweet father-daughter relationship (and also how Meera has extended to other universes too)!!! It's such a unique take on the TWC verse. More generally I also adore your edits of your ocs; you are so insanely talented!!

giving Karthik a child was the best decision of my life. creating Meera i wanted her to be like kinda opposire ro her father. where Karthik is very outgoing, friendly, popular people person. Meera is a shy, quiet child who doesnt really have any friends. the kid that gets easily picked on and considered 'weird' by others.

also just the sweetness and angst potential of it all hehe. esp like with how Rebecca would handle it too - would history repeat itself or will Rebecca try for her grandbaby now?

omg I love that Karthik has a kid!!! I have so many questions (feel free to disregard, it's so possible you answered somewhere but i didn't see rip). How old was Karthik when he had Meera/how old is she during the TWC timeline? Is Meera's other parent in the picture (and how is that relationship with Meera and with Karthik)? Does Meera know about the supernatural or is Karthik trying to protect her from it?

Hiiiii ! Thanks for the ask!! it was fun to think about!!! to answer your questions:

He was around 19/20 when he had her, so rather young parent indeed. Starting from book 1, Meera is 6 years old and just starting first school (year one).

The other parent, oof - Her name is Nikhita. She was his first love, from the outside it was seen as a fast paced romance. Met during his gap year when he travelled abroad. They got along swimmingly and super close, super fast. A whirlwind romance. When Karthik mentions he is going back to study at university, Nikhita wished to join to follow him. Nikhita had her secrets, her reasons - even to this day, Karthik never truly understood why she dropped everything for him. Only wanted to believe she cared, that she loved him. After they found out about the pregnancy, instead of worry or anxious thoughts - Karthik did the impulsive thing and proposed to her on the spot. wishing to always be there for her no matter what, and they can get through this as a team - as it always had been. She accepts. It was a simple wedding, nothing fancy - with their friends and his grandparents. Rebecca was invited but did not show.

Everything seemed to go well, that's what Karthik believed. But once Meera was born and Nikhita returned home from the hospital, things changed. Shared one night of rest and relaxation , but in the night she left. Bag already packed and walking out the door. Tho Karthik is a light sleeper and would catch her before she leaves. Karthik would be confused and tried to reason with her, to understand - but she remains silent. A final kiss then shes gone. And that's the last he saw of her. Before the events of book 1, he still believed she could come back on day - and still holding out hope. Even if she left, he doesn't ever think bad of her. Meera would ask about her mother and why she isn't here and why she doesn't come to pick her up like other kids mothers do. He tries to be honest as he can, but still keeping Nikhita is a positive light. Doesn't want Meera to ever think bad of her mother.

Meera does know about the supernatural, Karthik knows first hand that secrets can cause strain on family and doesn't wish for Meera to experience that same loneliness as he once did with his mother. Hence why he tries to include her more often than not and spending more time with her. Not letting work get in the way. Also she was present during the thrall bar fight scene (assuming its one of those family friendly pubs) so had to witness all that and esp seeing her dad get knocked unconscious by a strange person.

Another reason why Meera indeed knows about the supernatural world , is so the agency can keep an eye on her. for uh... spoiler reasons.

Even after she knows, Karthik is immensely protective over her and her safety with the world. Esp after the events of book 3 and knows that enemies would use those he cares about to get after him. He cannot let that happen to Meera. He would do anything to make sure his child his safe.

6. Do they own a pet? Jasmine: I'm on the fence for her. she doesn't have a pet at the moment, but also if she were to have one - I think she'd have an owl as a pet. Small and grumpy like their owner hehe. Karthik: Would love to have a dog one day, maybe when Meera is a little bit older then he can get one. but currently he is petless.

7. Do they have any fears? Jasmine: dislikes creepy crawlies, can be rather squeamish and will be found on top of the counter at even the sight of one. regardless how small. Is scared when she opens herself up, the other is disgusted what they find inside. Is anxious what other's think of her, even if she acts as she doesn't care. Scared of love and that love could be taken away or used against her at any given moment. Lastly, scared never being someone's first choice. Karthik: one of his biggest fears would be losing people, in both a unable to protect them from dangers and ruining relationships that will cause the other person to leave kinda way. He is also scared about being forgotten, he cares so much about other people that we only wishes and hopes he is seen as the same way.

8. What do they think of Unit Bravo? Jasmine: - Ava: Didn't get along as the start, used to butt heads a lot. but realised they are both similar than expected. Like how protective she is over her team and honestly admires her leadership skills. Can bond whilst training since both are combat skilled and also play a good game of chess. - Nat: Was slight pouty when she first saw her height, in comparison to her own. but has come to appreciate Nat as a friend of sorts. Tho only didn't trust her at the start with how nice and welcoming she was, made her slight weary cause of past experiences. but slowly start to bond more, even if the steps are slow. - Morgan: probs get along with Morgan the least. Wasn't a fan of her attitude at the start. a grump meets another grump, doesn't go as well as planned. but does appreciate the quiet moments and her loyalty to her team. but appreciates most when she includes Jasmine in those words. - Farah: Was flustered with Farah since the moment they met. admires her endless joy and optimism. Admires that shes so unshamelessly herself and truly the heart of the family. With Farah, Jasmine would want to feel she can open that door and be herself without the fear of shame or mockery. Sees Farah as genuinely good, charming, really pretty that doesn't quite understand why someone like Farah would want to be with someone like her. Karthik: -Ava: Admires her headstrongness and would think she considers the team, himself included, as a family than just a team. Tho does feel she can be rather too logical at times, clashing with his always thinking with his heart. can get a little overwhelmed with her uprightness and all the plans - since he rather go with the flow lol. -Nat: Got along so well since the beginning. Bonding over antique shopping, dogs and languages. It was nice to find another that shares his same interests! Considers her as a kind, gentle soul who is a very close friend to him. -Mason: At the start, was intrigue with his mysteriousness. The more he started to know him, he admires his fierce loyalty for those he cares for. Thinks of the team as a family. his own sense of humour that makes Karthik chuckle, even when not understanding the sarcasm. but mostly, he admires when Mason can trust him enough to be vulnerable. Will trust and protect Mason as fiercely as he does to him. -Felix: Admires his sweet and fun loving nature. His energy matches his own. loves his optimistic, high strong spirit. Seeing his curiosity with new things, makes Karthik want to experience them with him. It pains him when he sees Felix sad and wants to do whatever he can to make sure his smile stays radiant and permenmant. Loves his jokes and cheekiness as well!

9. What is their relationship with their mother like? Jasmine: Quite tense. But she doesn't wish it be - all she wanted was for Rebecca to choose her over her own work for once in her life. Starting to appreciate seeing more of Rebecca around, its more than she ever thought she'd get - but is still walking with caution tape to avoid the disappointment once again. Karthik: Is very close with her, as much as he can be. Family and community is forever important to him and doesn't wish to lose that. Even if it means creating excuses for her behaviour to keep her more around in his life. Refuses to see the bad in her, his intense optimism can make the truth blurry.

10. What about their hobbies? Jasmine: Enjoys cooking! loves to experiment with different flavours, combinations and spices. Has started her own recipe book in inspiration of her father. She also enjoys a game of chess to keep her mind at ease, and other puzzles. Keeps quite a few houseplants and enjoys tendering to them. Karthik: is an outdoor person, enjoys many types of sports such as; basketball, cricket, tennis, running, volleyball and swimming. Likes to bake as well - even if he may not be the best at it. Lastly, he loves to garden, his dream to own his own house with a large back garden to tends to the flowers and plants to his hearts content. But currently likes to spend time in the community gardens.

Hi there!!!! I only have one m-mancer detective but very much enjoy him on this route hehe

3. How does your detective personally feel about M’s pet name? And with it now being used unsarcastically in the Book 3 demo, has that changed?

Karthik actually really likes the nickname, considers it a compliment tbh - since he does enjoy being called handsome. He's the type of dude that likes to give nicknames/petnames to all his friends so very much appreciative when Mason has one for him too. His nicknames for Mason would be "Pretty boy" and "Storm cloud".

in terms of the book 3 demo, he didn't realise he was calling him that sarcastically to begin with! But still very much enjoys the name, esp in the more softer moments.

8. Personally, how do you think your detective will react when M admits they have deeper feelings for the detective?

His initial reaction would be a wide set grin and just a "oh damn - really?!". But i can imagine Karthik realising his feelings for Mason before the confession, funny enough i think he'd realise cause of that bakery scene - hence why it hurt a lot more than usual.

But at Mason's confession - he'd be hella ecstatic that the feeling is very much mutual! Defo would be hard keeping that grin off his face for the rest of the day <3.

11. If on the Douglas route, what is your detective’s feelings on this? And how do you think M feels about this?

He does feel a sense of protectiveness over Douglas (the dad in him do be jumping out) and thinks its good to see that Douglas is trying to help more out. Is flattered with the 'hero worship' thing, but just glad he is stepping up instead of clammed shut on the reception desk. Tho very much does feel for him when Doug talks about his own dad - the mayor is probably the one person who's behaviour Karthik cannot make an excuse for. hmm, i don't Mason would be too surprised to hear that Douglas looks up to Karthik, cause probably thinks highly of him, himself too. Esp knowing how kind and genuine Karthik always is.

Hii alps! If you want could you share some facts about karthik and his kid? I love the idea of a detective with a child and he seems so sweet! 💚

Hi blue!!!! and omg i would love to tell more about him!!! 😊💖

His daughter's name is Meera and is only six years old. Rather shy and quiet - prefers to keep to herself or hiding behind her dad.

Can be considered a 'jock' in highschool. Still to this day, loves the outdoors and sports - esp basketball. Can also be found helping in the community town garden, enjoys gardening.

Super oblivious when others have a crush on him - will end up accidently friend zoning them. Falls in love the slowest out of all my detectives, even when in a relationship.

Studied journalism at university, and did actually graduate. Ideally would've wanted to go into field journalism - but hard to travel when his kid needs to go to school.

His favourite type of flower/plant is a dandelion. Loves to blow on it to make wishes.

His go to accessory that he's never seen without would be bracelets. has a ton on both arms - and obvs the rings...

He is a community man and people person. Knows pretty much everyone in town and tries to be friendly and cheery with them all. Doesn't like to have grudges or bad relationships with anyone - regardless if they upset / hurt him.

Lastly, he is a decent cook - but very messy in the kitchen. Does try his best to cook good meals for Meera's sake. Prefers to bake, but very much doesn't like dealing with the dirty dishes afterwards.

ooof this was a toughy to pick, but I would say Naomi. The woman who rather constantly pick fights, cut strings with all, not accepting help or even wanting it, hating on others who doesnt deserve it. and just very much is the queen of self sabotaging herself instead of trying to get better.
