Going clockwise: Riley (the rabbits are physical manifestations of their intrusive thoughts - don’t worry about it), Clover (werewolf-coded), Sétanta (also werewolf-coded but in a different way - Ovidia’s patron), Roman (a ghost), Molli (sees ghosts when she’s high), Annaliese (old DND character), and Ovidia (current DND character) in the center.

Jain had found nir morning unoccupied and sought out Ovidia at the training grounds. It was with the intention of reading while she and Cassandra did their usual dance, but Cassandra was engaged with Iron Bull, so Ovidia had forced some hand-to-hand training on nem.

Jain sits, now, on a stump, dusty and sweaty and a little bruised, as Ovidia sharpens her sword beside nem. She’s looking over at Cassandra, though, still with Bull. There appear to be sticks involved and not a lot of dodging on Bull’s part.

Hesitantly, Jain asks, “That’s not… anything, is it?”

Vidi looks at nem askance. “Doubt it. You know he’s got his eye on Pavus.”

Jain didn’t know that. Ovidia’s whetstone shrieks along the blade, and Jain holds nir tongue. Ney doesn’t feel equipped to initiate that conversation. The last time Jain saw Ovidia in this position, she was sixteen, flirting with the stablemaster’s daughter, and Jain was glad to be a nuisance.

Jain doesn’t know how to be the annoying little sibling anymore. Too many years of being afraid to worry them, of being afraid they wouldn’t believe nem. The casual banter, the intimate conversations—they don’t come as easy anymore.

Ovidia Trevelyan, she/her/hers, 35, romances Cassandra. serves as a companion. officer of the Ostwick City Guard. (mods: brows, hair, outfit)

[backstory under the cut.]

born to a cousin of a Free Marches Bann and a Nevarran mother. with their mother and their maternal grandmother having a mage lover, they grew up in a fairly liberal household with regards to magic, but they also grew up in a very pious household, with many family members involved with the Chantry and Templars.

Jain displays magic at 10, when Helena is 12 and Ovidia is 17. jain is sent to Markham because ney already had family in the Ostwick Circle. ovidia had already begun templar training, with helena intending to start hers soon, but when jain is taken away, they are both forced to confront what the Circle system actually means for families.

Ovidia is instantly uncomfortable by the thought of essentially being her sibling's jailer (they wouldn't of course have started her at the same circle, but that's where her mind first goes - how can she work in a circle full of ppl who are someone's sibling as their jailer?) and quits just before starting the lyrium. her father especially is greatly disappointed by this, and while she isn't disowned, she does choose to leave the house and joins the city guard since she has no other idea what to do with herself.

Helena is upset because she felt like ovidia was abandoning her, especially when she left the house, like she was removing herself from the family. their goal was always to be templars together, back when that role was still a gilded dream. when Ovidia expresses her concerns, Helena insists that if she doesn't like it, she should join so she can change things. for Helena, the idea is still noble. she believes she can be a Good Templar and the idea of protecting Jain and others like nem is important to her. joining the templars requires Helena to also be away from the family for a time, so there's a period of about ten years when the three of them are distanced from each other--with Ovidia in ostwick, Jain in markham, and Helena in hasmal.

Jain writes to both of them but never tells them the really bad things that happen in the circle. Jain's time home (thanks to their family's wealth) rarely coincides with helena's, and ney can't leave the family home and Ovidia doesn't live there anymore. ney is aware nir siblings had a falling out and attempts to patch it but it's difficult. Jain's failing relationships with nir siblings coupled with the trauma of living in the circle contribute a lot to nir lasting emotional issues.

eventually, Helena comes to peace with Ovidia's decision and Ovidia begins to visit home. Helena keeps contact with Jain through the order network and makes sure ney receives what ney needs, but she is still in the dark about just how bad it is for Jain. their wealth allows Ovidia to visit Jain, but while that relationship begins to grow in strength again, she also doesn't learn just how bad it is.

then kirkwall happens, the gallows mages rise up, Fiona leads the circle to separate from the chantry, and the mage-templar war breaks out. during this time, Ovidia brings Jain to the Ostwick circle where she provides security as templars have begun to leave in droves in rebellion against the chantry. Jain remains there; ney voted in favor of circle independence but doesn't want to fight, so ney and Ovidia work with others there to protect any mages who seek shelter. meanwhile, Helena is heavily involved in Templar politics. she is part of a faction that remains loyal to the chantry and wants to uphold the order's true role as protectors. she fights as many of her ex-comrades as she does apostates during this time and sends any mages in need of help to the ostwick circle.

when the conclave is called, both Jain and Helena attend it separately, not knowing the other is there. Ovidia remains behind to continue protecting the ostwick circle and hoping to help immediately with recovery efforts once the war is ended. however, we all know what happens next.

Jain and Helena find each other during the initial chaos when Cassandra brings Jain to the Breach and Helena arrives with Leliana. that's the first time they learn they were both there, that there was a chance they could have lost each other, and by pure luck they're both alive. as soon as she hears what happened, Ovidia leaves for haven (she saw Jain off when ney left and only received a letter from Helena after the fact, but she knew both were there.. she arrives just before they head to val royeaux to deal with the chantry. Jain is hailed as the herald of andraste, but Helena is ultimately made inquisitor, due to her being, well, not a mage but also because she just has better leadership qualities. ultimately, this trial brings them all back together and past conflicts are healed and left behind.
