“Sweetheart,” she blurted, then immediately stammered, “or well, Reyna - Lieutenant Castillo - Lieutenant Reyna Castillo, but my callsign is Sweetheart. Everyone calls me Sweetheart.” After finishing, she looked back up at Captain Mitchell, face hot with embarrassment and smiling bashfully. “I’m not making the best first impression, am I?”

“Not at all, you’re doing great,” the older aviator assured her, a warm and only slightly amused smile on his lips. He gestured to the empty barstool beside him. “You wanna have a seat?”

Oh. Sweeheart’s eyes widened just a little bit; she’d only come over to introduce herself, she hadn’t expected to be invited to sit with her instructor. But she also wasn’t sure if Captain Mitchell was the type of person who would be offended if she turned it down and went back to the others, so she nodded wordlessly and hopped onto the stool.

“So,” Captain Mitchell said, taking a long drink from his glass as he looked at her. “I assume one of the pilots I’m gonna be training?”

“Yes, sir,” Sweetheart replied immediately, then gave him a small, nervous smile. “And if you don’t mind me saying, I’m, um… I’m really excited. I was always hearing stories about you when I was in training.”

The captain chuckled at that, smirking as he took another drink. “Oh, yeah?” he said with a laugh still in his voice. “I can’t imagine all those stories were good. I don’t exactly have the best reputation among the higher-ups.”

“You have a reputation for always completing your missions,” Sweetheart returned. “Some of the higher-ups might not approve of the way you do that, but you get it done, and really that’s what matters.”

Their berserk button: People trying to excuse bad actions made when they were drunk purely with their drunkenness. In her mind, if you do something shitty when you’re drunk, you still wanted to do it when you were sober, and so you don’t get to use being drunk as an excuse.

Why their name was chosen: Reyna is a fairly common Filipino name for girls, and it also means queen, which her mother liked in a name for her daughter.

Their favorite 2020s song: “Glad You Exist” by Dan + Shay.

Their biggest fear: Dying without having been able to properly tell the people she cares about how much she cares about them and that she loves them.

One turn-on of theirs: Compassion. Anyone who makes the conscious decision to do good things for people is ten times more attractive to her than anyone who only does it because they’re expected to.

Their go-to sleepover activities: Doing each other’s nails with a movie on in the background, and playing board games and laughing until no one can keep their eyes open anymore.

What candles they'd get at Bath & Bodyworks: Peach Bellini - she loves the smell of peaches.

A moment where they reached their breaking point: When Maverick was thrown off of the uranium mission and Cyclone threatened to take her off of it too after she went to his office to protest his decision. The stress of losing the only aviator who she felt might be able to get them all out of this mission alive and being dismissed so roundly by a superior, combined with the stress and fear of the mission in general, finally caught up to Sweetheart after this, leaving her curled up in her room on base, having a meltdown and trying to cry as quietly as possible.

Whether they're organized or slobby: She’s pretty organized, but not overly so.

Their favorite feature about themselves: Her ability to remain polite, even when the other person or people don’t necessarily deserve it.
