#octavo's ode

okay so... i've just played octavo's ode for the first time, and i have some Thoughts (theory)

at the end of the basic storymode, you see a cutscene of the triforce surrounded by ominous purple mist. this is also the first cutscene of octavo's ode. then the last cutscene of OO is the mist dissipating, leaving the triforce in a clear sky.

i know it's a semi-popular theory that what this means is that OO takes place after the usual main story. and the mist is representative of someone (octavo probably) getting their hands on the triforce and wishing cadence had never been called to hyrule.

but... idk. why would octavo do that? he got what he wanted, ganon's defeated, even if he wasn't the one who did it. also, cadence is the wielder of the triforce of power- i'd sort of assumed she took that piece of the triforce with her when she left.

(also, octavo's ode does not feature the lute being sent to another world, so it's not cotnd compliant.)

and we see octavo access the triforce in OO's opening. it shatters, and he only gets power. so, no wish for octavo. not balanced enough.

therefore, i would like to propose my own theory: OO happens before regular story mode.

the ending we see is octavo returning to the past and not stealing the fate's threads. which, yeah, makes sense. but like... what about ganon? he's still going to rise to power. that's the whole reason octavo stole the threads in the first place! but from going to the future, he now sees that the path he took to defeat ganon would turn him into someone just as bad.

but we know octavo could reach the triforce once before. he's now travelled back to the past, possibly before he did that. so, maybe he goes back to the triforce, and now, with the wisdom and courage he's gained on his journey, he's able to make a wish.

he wishes for a champion to be brought to hyrule. someone who could stop ganon, and stop octavo from becoming the necrodancer. and the triforce obliges!

probably what octavo meant is that someone would just appear now and help him out with ganon, but the only sequence of events where someone other than octavo stops ganon is the one where they're chasing octavo to the future, so the triforce wipes the whole OO timeline clean, starting over with a world where cadence was summoned right after octavo started his evil scheme.

and (with the help of link and zelda) she stops ganon, and takes the lute from octavo, therefore fulfilling his wish (even though he doesn't remember making it.)

First thoughts sitting in the opening screen: the music is pretty nice

THE MUSIC IS SO GOOD moving to the beat is very neat (omg I'm dr. Seuss) the bees inhabiting my brain are going crazy over this and I've only killed two slimes and a pot so far

Introduction Post - Octavo

" When the powers that be REFUSE to fight... Someone must rise to the occasion. "

Octavo is a skilled Bard and Sorcerer who once worked for King Daltus in Hyrule Castle. After hearing of the threat Ganon posed to the kingdom, he decided to take matters into his own hands to prevent it. After tealing the Threads Of Fate from the three Oracles to construct a mythical Golden Lute, he put Hyrule's king under a deep sleep and created four "Champions" in the form of monstrous enchanted instruments to terrorize hyrule. When his evil and corruption grew too great Link intervened, defeating his champions and relinquishing the lute from him before he even had a Chance to face ganon.

(Very headcanon heavy. Outside of the additional context to Cadence of Hyrule's story that it provides, Octavo's Ode is non canon to this portrayal.)

Yknow what I think is interesting? The fact that in Octavo's Ode, Octavo can't actually control the monsters (yet), and they still go after him

I finished the main story for cadence of hyrule but there's actually a lot of extra content, this game was meant to be replayable just like the original necrodancer

However fir this playthrough I'm just going to do octavo's ode as well, because it serves as a capper to the story as a whole. A little more to go!

Why am I always better at playing Octavo than any other character?

Been playing CoH for the 1st time in 2 years, and yesterday I did the main story and had over 30 game overs. Today I did Octavo's Ode and only game overed twice, almost a direct parallel to when I first played the game and died 50 times in the story but only once as Octavo

Guess the cello player in me gets resurrected when I play as him 🤷

Me getting stuck at the entrance of the temple of storms twice because I have iron boots on and can't be lifted over the barrier

hang on i have just thought of something. i played octavo's ode without dying a single time, but it occurred to me now to check what happens if you do die in OO, and, uh...

...this is his death sprite

i take back my vote for him just being injured, my guy's dead as hell

ok wait. so at the end of cadence of hyrule (regular story mode) you find octavo like this outside the final boss room:

and i personally always read this as him being injured/exhausted, but other people talking about this have referred to him as dying. i don't think there's a canon statement on it, so...

*due to the timeline shenanigans after this, or the fates bring him back

If you guys were wondering where on earth I got that pose from...

I was actually going for the pose Octavo was doing on the announcement drawing for "Octavo's Ode". Also, the way he’s holding his baton is really uncomfortable in real life.

You guys were totally right on my lute being there as reference to the boss battle, though.
