Storsjön, Östersund (No. 3)

The name Storsjön means "the big lake". Many islands and areas around Storsjön have sacred names, although some such as Andersön (Ondursöy, i.e. Skadesö) have been distorted and Frösön (Frejs island) and Odensala. Storsjön's name seems lifeless compared to all the genuine place and lake names in its vicinity. Therefore, the name has been interpreted as a Christian replacement name for an older, unknown, Norse name. Part of Storsjön bears the name Åssjön and this name would, according to some, be the one that was replaced. The Ås trail is then derived from the north island of áss with disputed meaning, usually God, which would give "Lake Åssjön" the meaning (asa) of the holy lake of the gods.

The lake's large open lot is called Flaket and is limited by, from the north clockwise, Rödön, Frösön, Andersön, Norderön, Verkön, Utöarna, Hammarnäset. The only major islands are Åsön, a former training destination for the F4 flotilla on Frösön, and Gåjeholmen. The southern part of Storsjön is called Södra Storsjöflaket.

Deposits in the bedrock of Storsjön and its surrounding area include limestone,black alun slate and clay slate. According to some scientists, these originate from a 500 million-year-old tropical ocean. Further support for this thesis is the remains of a coral reef found off Andersön.

Storsjön was formed when the last ice sheet began to melt from the west just over 9,000 years ago. A number of different lakes emerged as they were united into a single large ice lake, the Central Equal Ice Lake. The meltwater formed a smaller inland ocean that was pent up by a barrier of ice in the east and by the mountain world in the west. As the ice sheet melted, the lake was sunk. Some levels have been so stable over a long period of time that there have been still discernible remains of shorelines. When the geological water catchment level was reached at the mouth of the Indalsälven river, Storsjön got its current distribution and shape.

Storsjön's only outlet is Hissmoforsen and the power of the water was used here already at the beginning of the 18th century by mills and sawmills, and in 1889 Hissmofors AB began to produce electricity here. In order to make better use of the lake's water, a common regulatory pond and power plant dam were built at the rapids in the late 1930s.

<Christmas With My Friends VII> Nils Landgren

닐스 란드그렌은 스웨덴 태생의 음악가이다. 트롬보니스트로 음악 활동을 시작한 그는 가수와 배우 등 다양한 영역에서 활약하고 있다. 블루 스위드(Blue Swede) 활동 이후 여러 그룹에 참여했고, 1984년 첫 솔로 앨범을 발표했다. 이후 네 장의 정규 앨범을 스웨덴에서 더 발표했다. 그리고 1994년 독일의 재즈 레이블 ACT에 소속된 이후부터는 솔로 작업과 함께 Nils Landgren Funk Unit으로도 활동해오고 있다.

닐스 란드그렌의 <Merry Christmas with My Friends>는 2006년부터 시작된 일련의 시리즈 앨범이다. 스톡홀름의 한 교회—오덴살라 교회(Odensala Church)—에서 크리스마스를 기념하는 공연을 하고 이것을 녹음해 앨범으로 제작한 것이 그 시작이었다. 애초에 이 공연은 그가 언젠가 꼭 해보고 싶었던 노래들을 연주하고 부르며 친구들, 가까운 이들과 함께 크리스마스를 기리는 데 목적이 있었던 것 같다. 이 행사는 거의 고정적인 라인업으로 2년마다 새로운 트랙 세팅으로 반복되었다. 2020년 올해에도 어김없이 앨범이 나왔다. 이번에 그가 이 앨범에 관한 아이디어를 내자, 오래 함께해 온 ACT 레이블의 대표 지그프리트 로흐(Siegfried Loch)는 그에게 더 다양한 국가의 캐럴들을 포함시켜 보는 것은 어떻겠느냐는 제안을 했다. 닐스 란드그렌은 그 제안을 받아들여 세계 각국에서 다양한 언어로 불리던 노래들을 새롭게 편곡해 그의 동료들과 함께 연주했다. 이 앨범에는 스웨덴, 독일, 폴란드, 아이슬란드 등 유럽 지역뿐 아니라 미국, 아프리카에서 건너온 캐럴까지 다양하게 수록되었다. 크리스마스를 기리는 음악들인 만큼 이 곡들은 재즈보다 교회 음악의 특성에 더 가깝게 편곡되었다. 특히 아카펠라와 성가, 가스펠 등 보컬의 다양한 연출이 특징적이었던 것 같다.

아카펠라로 시작하는 첫 곡 This Christmas는 요한 노베리(Johan Norberg)가 작곡한 것이다. 그는 이전에도 닐스 란드그렌과 함께 작업한 바 있고, 여기에서는 기타 연주와 프로듀싱을 함께 했다. Comin’ Home for Christmas는 독일의 재즈 뮤지션 에바 크루제(Eva Kruse)의 곡으로 닐스 란드그렌의 보컬이 중심이 되었다. 슈베르트의 Ave Maria에서는 자장가처럼 반복되는 기타 연주와 노래가 성스러운 분위기를 그려낸다. 후반부를 채우는 트롬본 연주도 인상적이었다. Gdy śliczna Panna / Listen to My Lullaby는 폴란드에서 전통적으로 불려 오던 캐럴을 영어로 개사해 불렀고, A면의 마지막 트랙 Sizalelwe Indodana / Unto Us a Son Is Born은 남아프리카에서 불리던 찬송가로 박수 소리와 퍼커션, 합창 등으로 흥겨운 분위기를 제시한다.

Hin fyrstu jól(The First Christmas)는 아이슬란드에서 1954년 발표된 곡이다. 노래는 없지만 현악기와 관악기들이 서로 포개어지며 흥미롭고 따스한 사운드를 만들어낸다. Just Another Christmas Song은 2015년 나온 곡으로 원곡의 솔풀한 분위기를 가지고 와 조금은 펑키한 느낌의 캐럴을 들려준다. Sylvian Joululaulu와 En förtvivlad vän은 각각 핀란드와 벨기에에서 온 곡으로 이전 노래들에 비해 다소 어둡고 무거운 분위기를 가진다. 그래서 크리스마스의 여흥이 지나고 차분한 밤이 올 때 들어보면 좋을 만한 트랙이 아닐까 생각되었다. 마지막 트랙 Feliz Navidad는 푸에르토리코 출신의 맹인이었던 가수 호세 펠리시아노(José Feliciano)의 곡이다. 가벼운 반주, 그리고 부드러운 화음과 합창이 기분을 산뜻하게 만들어주는 듯하다.

크리스마스를 기념하는 앨범은 참 많고 거기에는 저마다 특별한 이야기들이 있는 것 같다. 그 앨범들은 해마다 12월이 되면 반가운 기억처럼 다가온다. 해마다 크리스마스가 되면 찾게 되고 다시 듣는다 해도 지루하지 않다. 닐스 란드그렌이 동료들과 함께한 이 앨범은 희고 부드러운 눈을 연상시킨다. 소복이 눈이 쌓인 평온한 풍경을 그려낸 듯한 그런 느낌의 위로를 준다. 차갑고 시린 겨울의 한가운데에 있지만 음악이라는 나눔을 통해 마음은 따뜻해질 수 있다는 믿음도 생긴다. 이후에도 크리스마스가 되면 생각나는 그런 앨범이 될 것 같다.

In pre-Christian times, this was a well-known place of sacrifice to the Norse god Odin. The place was then called Odensharg (Odin-hearg). Harg Meant a place of sacrifice. About 1000 AD the first christians in Swedeb built a church on the site. The church Odensala (Odins-hall) was as late in the 18th century named Odinsharg. The name of the church still honors the name of Odin to this day.
