Introducing Odorrana leishanensis, a new species of odorous frog that has just been discovered in south-west China. As the name suggests, these amphibians have a characteristic smell which has been likened to rotten fish. But herpetologists are finding it’s worth holding their noses to study these frogs: their skin is unusually rich in antibacterial substances, with potential implications for medical science

The Ishikawa’s frog [Odorrana ishikawae] is a species endemic to Okinawa Island in Japan. These frogs are endangered due to an already limited natural range combined with increasing encroachment of human settlements. From January to May these frogs breed in small pools and streams, with each pair producing about 1,000 eggs. The specimen shown here is kept in captivity in Germany. Images by Dr. Peter Janzen.

Always a treat to come across the endangered Odorrana splendida or Ishikawa's Frog. This beautiful specimen only lives on Amami Oshima and we spotted it on Santaro Toge Pass after dropping into ハナハナ茶屋 (Hanahana Chaya) Tea House in Sumiyo. 🐸 Hana Hana is how we say "cheers" on Amami. Before we knew it, my buddy @ktnkmr and I had been there for more than 2 hours drinking coffee and sharing a lovely conversation with some locas about Amami's indigenous languages as well as consuming impromptu raisin bread hamburgers! Here we see a large odorous frog [Odorrana graminea] trying to breed with an Asian common toad [Duttaphrynus melanostictus] in Hong Kong. As you may have guessed, frogs of the genus Odorrana smell extremely bad. This is because these frogs are covered in enormous amounts of antimicrobial peptides. These peptides form a shield against bacteria and fungi that grow in the warm, wet leaf litter of their environment, thus keeping the frogs safe from infection. The stinky smell is an unfortunate side effect to this otherwise amazing biological adaptation. This image was taken by WK Cheng.

After searching for a year, I finally found Ishikawa's Frog (Odorrana ishikawae) in the mountain road between Yamato-Son and Uken. This frog is often called the most beautiful frog in Japan and is currently on the IUCN endangered species list.
