Jack and Bitty in Madison for memorial day weekend. You know the Bittles are all about it, BBQ-ing and eating pies and stuff. Jack meets the cousins, the aunts, the family friends. They play lawn games in the grass and Jack gets competitive with the kids. Would love to see Jack feeling really comfortable in that part of Bitty's life.

5 NHL offseasons + 1 after jack retires (some ideas, feel free to use or ignore: missing moments the summer after 1st cup win, summer after 2nd cup win, summer they get married, summer jack gets traded to montreal, summer they adopt a kid, summer bitty is on a book tour, etc etc)

Bitty visits Jack over the summer at his family's cottage on a lake outside of Montreal. They get to relax laying out on the dock and Jack teaches Bitty how to canoe/kayak, roast s'mores, etc. What happens at the lake stays at the lake...or does it?

Beach au where bitty is chilling (sunbathing?) and gets hit by an off course volleyball or beach ball and enacts revenge by kicking butt at volleyball and beating everyone else (extra points if it’s stranger!Jack that hit him)

When Bitty’s work schedule prevents them from going to Madison for the 4th of July, Jack does his best to bring Madison to Bitty.

Jack Zimmermann is heading to Scotland to do summer field research on the cultural impact of the Loch Ness Monster. Bitty, after failing a class and needing credits to graduate, gets assigned to be his research assistant.Maybe the real mystery was falling in love all along.

Jack picks up gardening in the off season. Bitty helps Jack make food with his produce!

hi so I've just eaten too much ice cream, feel vaguely ill, and I'm here to tell you All About How I Failed At Outlining for SGKF this year!

that's partially just a fun tagline, but it's also a bit true. I told my friends I'd be trying to use several different outlining methods to try and knock out a plotty piece for the fest, and things did not go to plan!

important to begin with: I am what is referred to as a "pantser." I tend to just start writing. this is strangely contradictory to my personality, which deeply loves plans. unfortunately, what often happens is plans and outlines ruin my excitement and drive while working on a project (it tricks me into thinking I've done all the work and resolved the plot), leading me to abandon it.

and though I can throw together pretty words and made a decent fic, my fics never turned out as good as they could have been. I kept telling myself that if I planned in advanced and worked out what I was doing BEFORE I did it, I'd be able to craft a fic with such care and attention as to make it really SHINE.

so, uh, kinkfest rolls around, and since I was a mod I could see all the prompts before they even got released to the public, so I basically had a WHOLE EXTRA two-ish weeks to start planning and writing.

did I? NO.

so, despite the fact that I collect writing advice like a magpie , I'm not the greatest at implementing it. if you go into my SGKF google folder, you'll find a few instances of me TRYING to implement writing advice like metawriting:

my issue was (and still is) that I think I value every little word too much. this is a bad thing: I'm an overwriter by nature. when I get words down, I want to keep them because I feel like I worked hard for them, even if they're not great or don't actually serve the story in the way they should. that's not to say all my metawriting was bad; it wasn't. I tried it out for A Drowning in California as well [which will henceforth just be referred to as "California").

I had a whole subfolder for California. what kind of amazed me is how different my initial notes for the prompt are from what the story actually ended up being. here, take a look:

literally almost none of this is in california. the WWE and UFC stuff made it in, and so did sid wrestling with horny, but that was it. I was going to start this fic in the locker room, with sid wrestling someone, and it was seriously going to be a story about sex—about sid wanting to hold geno down in bed. that was the premise.

and instead, we got a really emotional story about familial rejection and the isolation it can make people feel. SO! something happened along the way, right?

when I started getting into the plot that would support this supposed sexfest, this is where I went at first:

geno wants the relationship to get serious, sid is like mentally still a 12 year old who just wants to wrestle people and doesn't want to talk about his emotions, and prefers to use physicality to communicate. this doesn't work for geno, who wants ... more

we can start to see the actual emotions come through, the things I was interested in: sid using touch to talk, and geno desperately wanting more

what did the most good for me, in the end, was "doing" the metawriting by talking with my friends.

I told them what i thought this story was about ("I'm thinking about making this a story about relationship-defining, maybe? and the communication needed for a lasting adult relationship? I think I'm going to set it in california/LA, where Sid has invited Geno along for the first time for his California Summer Fun/Training/Escape, whatever, and Geno's going to be emotionally preoccupied with Defining The Relationship—maybe they've been on-again-off-again? maybe they're just new to this, like almost a year deep, and they're not getting younger—and thinking this trip is about that [or hoping this trip is about that, and realizing it isn't, and being disappointed].") and they told me what jumped out at them.

Jes told me what would ramp up the tension would be a deadline of some sort; "Geno’s going to break up with Sid or make some decision or something, or there’s something approaching where they have to make a will they or won’t they decision of some kind related to the core ‘defining the relationship’ issue. Geno’s going back to russia and in previous summers they’ve always slept with other people while apart? or Sid has a wedding coming up and he’s offhandedly mentioned taking someone else as his plus one?"

I liked her thoughts. it made sense to add an external pressure to all this, and that wedding idea stuck out to me the most.

Lis said I should add a jealousy angle, so you can largely credit her for the club scene: "one thing i like to sort of headcanon/imply about sid's california trips is he uses them to hook up anonymously. so you could have, like, sid and geno seeing sid's friends, but also accidentally running into some of sid's friends. and geno's like oh, great, so here i am doing this horrible summertime training that i hate because i don't need to train in the offseason actually, and i'm learning what exactly sid gets up to when we're apart."

My magical solution these days is GOING FOR WALKS. do it if you're able. it clears out your brain. so on my walks I ended up deciding that I wanted a taylor crosby wedding. I like taylor as a character, and as a person with sisters I just like writing her in. best of all, she and sid are close and I like writing "I'd do anything for my family" sid.

and then I was like. oh. what if it's not that sid is afraid/nervous to bring geno, it's that he can't.

I... wasn't as conflicted as I thought I'd be about writing sid's parents as homophobic. I prefer to write them as supportive; I think troy crosby's been eviscerated more than he should have been in older fanworks, and though I respect their right to make fictional!troy whatever they want, I've been a little skeptical of outlandish takes on him ("he doesn't say I love you to his son because a camera caught them mid-interaction once!") ever since I read how the media has found him a convenient narrative villain while he tried to keep his underage son safe from the media as a child and while they needed to cook up Spicy Stories about squeaky-clean sid.

uh, tangent aside, I always thought I'd never write a "parents are the villains" story, but I did here. it felt right. it was easier, too, because they're not PRESENT in the story. I didn't have to write trina actually being horrible to her son. I just had to skirt the edges of the wound.

which works well on two fronts: I don't have to actively write the crosbys being horrible to sid, and I also leave more to the imagination of the reader, and that almost never fails to make the work better. whatever the reader imagines them saying to sid, it's going to be 10x more hurtful than anything I'd write.

I dug really deep on some personal emotions and fears I experience as a gay person for a lot of sid's arc here. sid is deeply imperfect in this story, and he's internalizing his pain and the horrible thing that's happened to him, which is making him pull away from his partner, and sid is not responding how geno wants, nor is he responding well, period, though he's trying in his own wounded, stilted way.

and beloved geno, whose tender heart is so hidden away for fear of someone hurting it. I really like writing geno; he's huffy and emotional and sometimes bitchy and feels things SO deeply.

once I had more of an idea, I was already working on a more detailed outline. this is where I seriously took Jes's advice and WROTE EVERYTHING OUT! it made it so much less daunting, because I didn't have to be figuring out my next steps AND crafting sentences at the same time. also this is where I tell you that the title of this post is mostly a lie, it was metawriting I failed at.

This outline also meant I avoided writing large swaths of things that should've been cut. Another beta told me I should delete three scenes and condense a bunch of emotions into the club scene, and she was SO right. Cutting events out of an outline is WAY easier than cutting out pages of text.

Ironically my outline kind of deteriorated after the club scene, but that's alright: after I wrote the club scene, I actually had a clear vision of what I wanted the end to be. I just had to trust myself. I CAN do this, I CAN still just write intuitively sometimes!

I think California did what I wanted it to do. I'd love to try something out that's longer and has more story arcs in it (jes has a post for that too!) but I think that's best saved for another, longer project, though 18k isn't short.

next up is maggie stief's writing seminar that I bought a month back. I'm going to start working on that this month and see how I like it. I have a few halloween fic ideas, plus spookfest, so these next two months we should be cooking in the kitchen!

We’re happy to say that we received 81 prompts this time around, and we spent the last few days distilling all those amazing and creative prompts down to a list of 63 prompts! (If you’re keeping count, that’s far more than last year’s 48!) 

As with last year, we had some repeat prompts and prompts that were similar enough that it made sense to condense them under one item. Additionally, most of the prompts we distilled down to a few words for the sake of having a concise list! Again, like last year’s fest, we’re providing the full text of the original prompts under the cut, in case you’re looking for more details to get started!

You’re free to create any kind of fanwork based on the below prompts! There’s no minimum word count and no rules on what to create, or even how many - if you want to combine prompts, that’s cool! If you’re called to make more than one thing, that’s awesome too! The only limit is that this fest runs from now until April 15th - so if you’re creating something, make sure you post it and tag it with #bennguinfanfest so we can share it to this tumblr! 1. Matchmaking dogs: Tyler’s dogs want to get their human with a certain cow-eyed captain

“well this is really awkward considering the last time we saw each other, i was screaming at you to never talk to me again, but like, my dog recognized you all the way across the park and literally dragged me over here because she misses you so hi” AU

3. It's Tyler's birthday and at first Jamie gives off the feeling that he's forgotten and this hurts Tyler but it turns out that that Jamie wakes Tyler up at midnight on his birthday with two tickets to an offseason trip

4. I want a fic that REALLY captures what it would be like if two NHL players were to come out in 2019. I'm talking teammate reactions, press reactions, social media, family, the whole shebang. I wanna see the real raw reactions and the struggle the guys would have to go through. I would also loooove if you could fit Jamie proposing to Tyler in there somewhere but it isn't a necessity.

Jamie has a hard time dealing with how public Tyler’s life is, with the insta stories and with random people filming him all the time. It feels like it’s only a matter of time before their relationship is exposed because of how much Tyler is in the public eye. Jamie doesn’t want to break up but it seems like that’s the only choice he has. He doesn’t want to do this so much that he calls a press conference and comes out of the closet.

Jamie and Tyler have been dating since 2014 and he’s tired of hiding it. So with Jamie’s consent he posts a cute photo of them being a couple and writes a heartfelt monologue about their story. And the whole hockey community blows up about it. And it’s kinda about how they deal with being and out couple and Tyler posting obnoxiously cute couple photos on his Instagram. Sorry this prompted is a mess I just want Tyler to be a troll and post cute cliche couple photos on Instagram of him and Jamie and the world loading their minds about it.

Jamie and Tyler come out to the team about them dating. Management wants to keep their relationship secret so they make Jamie fake date someone. And him and Tyler struggle with the stress that puts on them.

7. Parallel universes -- somehow Tyler (or Jamie) finds himself in an alternate universe where his life is radically different (for better or for worse) which makes him realize how much his relationship to Jamie (or Tyler) means.

10. Amnesia angst for the win - Jamie gets a particularly hard hit, wakes up and can remember everyone except for tyler (maybe not explicitly, say they can *remember* them, but not remember that they've been dating for eight months now) cue tyler avoiding jamie because its too hard him to be around him

11. soulmate au! people are born with blackmarks - on their hands, their faces, their skin in general - the black marks is the first place their soulmate would touch them. Jamie was born without a mark. Tyler was born with two pitch black palms. Years after tylers been traded to the stars, Jamie falls asleep, and tyler can't help but run his fingers through Jamie's hair, just once, and then he looks down at his hand and the tips of his fingers are colored, and so are the few strands of Jamie's black hair.

12. Tyler thirst follows Jamie on insta. This can be hockey or non-hockey, but Jamie follows back and they start talking.

They’re both single, so why not go for it? Alternatively, one is a queen and the other is a member of the pit crew.

i've been out of touch with rvb lately and after seeing the rtx sydney thing, red-vs-red redirected me to you to ask about the general production issues surrounding rvb right now so i was wondering if you could fill me in? Like whats up with the dvd or the mssing soundtrack and all that. sounds fucky

Alright, so I’ll try to break it down the best I can (though I’m not great at explaining things since I can usually break into tangents). Basically, since the conclusion of Season 14, Rooster Teeth’s been toning down Red vs. Blue’s overall presence within the company and its current direction.

As we know by now, 14 was sort’ve a relaxation period for Red vs. Blue’s ongoing narrative, which had just finished its fourth story arc (The Chorus Trilogy), instead opting to go for an anthology with a variety of different directors and writers at the helm to tell stories either within the universe or just PSA-esque non-canon episodes featuring the characters. According to Burnie (or Miles? Can’t remember), this was kinda a try-out season for potential new directors to replace Miles, the director of The Chorus Trilogy, which is where they found Joe Nicolosi, who had directed The Brick Gulch Chronicles in 14, to write/direct 15. Reception of 14 overall was, I’ll say mixed because I know there’s people who loved it, people who hated it, and lots of people who liked some episodes but disliked others.

This is important because Season 14 may have been the relaxation period for the narrative, but was the most expensive season of the series to date with its combination of traditional machinima, 3D animation, 2D animation, and live action in addition to its wide library of director/writers (including bigger names like Game Grumps and Freddie Wong). I’m not going to get into why Season 14′s reception was mixed, but I’ve seen the word miscommunication thrown around and I think that sums it up best. I’m not sure how the Blu-Rays sold, but something tells me it wasn’t great. So why’s this part important? Well, let’s get into the offseason stuff.

After Season 14 finished airing, Rooster Teeth actively removed Red vs. Blue from most of their site branding (save for the little “RvB Collection” link to the store; although on the store’s homepage it’s just lumped in with animation) and instead they started going all in with RWBY marketing, which had just gained its first spinoff show, RWBY Chibi, and its very own video game, RWBY: Grimm Eclipse. So, RWBY’s popularity is skyrocketing while Red vs. Blue’s starts to quiet down. Less people talking about it, less fanworks, less interest in the show from all angles. Now, after the end of 13, both 14 and 15 were confirmed at the same time due to the unique nature of 14, since 15 would be the season that continues the narrative. But here’s the thing: after the conclusion of 14, there was no mention of 15 beyond “it’s happening.” Joe wasn’t confirmed as director until a month before the season premiered, with the trailer being released just two days before the first episode came out. There was essentially no marketing for the season, Rooster Teeth barely advertised it on any of its social platforms. In fact, if you want to go back even further, right before the premiere of 13, the entire series was moved from Rooster Teeth’s YouTube channel to its own dedicated channel. This was probably the first sign of change.

Now let me backtrack to something that really hurt the series and its viewership: the schedule shift between 14 and 15. During 13 and 14, FIRST members would be able to watch episodes a day early on Sundays while regular site members would get episodes on Mondays and to the general public on the following Sunday. It was a pretty good system and kept fans mostly in sync with one another so spoilers wouldn’t be much of an issue, since joining the site as a regular member was free. Now lets fast forward to the release of the trailer, which had advertised the season’s premiere as April 2nd, the day after the show’s 14th anniversary. It didn’t specify whether or not that meant for FIRST members or regular site members, but nobody really saw this as a concern since the release times for both were so close to one another it didn’t matter. So when the season premiered, it was predictably FIRST-exclusive and many fans thought it would simply come out for regular members the next day. It didn’t, and it was instead followed by the announcement of a new release schedule. Rather than FIRST members and regular site members being closer to one another, regular site members would now have to wait with the public an entire week before being able to watch episodes. Rooster Teeth attempted this the year before via email, but after a large negative response from both FIRST members and the general community, they backed off. This time, the schedule was already implemented before it was announced with no intention on changing it, despite the backlash it again received. Instead, a flimsy excuse was given that can be chalked up to “we wanted to experiment with Red vs. Blue.”

So, now there was a large discrepancy between FIRST members and fans who didn’t have FIRST membership. At this point, Red vs. Blue was not being advertised, removed from most branding (now being lumped into the general “Animation” section in the store), and a divided community who couldn’t ever really discuss the show together anymore because the majority of fans didn’t have FIRST memberships so FIRST members wouldn’t discuss the show to avoid spoiling non-FIRST members as a courtesy. A lot of people didn’t even realize the season had even come out until after it was finished, that’s how bad the advertising was. For comparison, Season 13′s main trailer came out a month before it premiered, had a music contest, a holiday special, four individual episode trailers on the Rooster Teeth channel, cross-promotion with On the Spot, a series of exclusive limited edition posters as well as five promotional posters (four of which were for individual characters), really just a bunch of new merch in general and honestly the season just had more love from Rooster Teeth overall. Season 14 saw similar treatment, with its own trailer coming out, individual trailers for nearly every episode (although now on the Red vs. Blue channel instead of Rooster Teeth’s main one), frequently promoted on Rooster Teeth’s social outlets, and some new merch (although less than 13). The release dates for the DVD/Blu-Rays were about a month after they premiered, with 13′s soundtrack being released a little before the season finished if I recall (correct me if I’m wrong).

Now lets look at 15′s promotion: a single poster, one trailer, one AMA during the season (conducted by Joe, Miles, Kyle Taylor, and Josh Ornelas), and three shirts (a Grif one, a Sister one, and a redvsblue.com retro shirt). After the season wrapped up, there was no hype built around it, it came and went. Another difference this season was the exclusion of PSAs, a series staple since the first season. Even 14 had its own variation of PSAs, such as the Sarge 3 episode being a followup to two PSAs from previous seasons. Joe mentioned that this was to avoid interrupting the plot, which is fine, and it was implied that they would start releasing during offseason. After 15 wrapped up, the series went into hibernation. Now typically, like I mentioned earlier, a home release should have been about a month after the season wraps up. Season 15 concluded in August 2017, it is now February 2018, six months later without any mention of what’s going on with its DVD. On top of that, Red vs. Blue had no presence at RTX London. So far, we’ve had no PSAs but we got one holiday short, a new Caboose’s Guide, as well as a new Caboose plush to go with it, both of which are great! Joe also organized an AMA of his own (meaning not in the Rooster Teeth subreddit and no promotion from Rooster Teeth). To put it into perspective, in 2017 RWBY had yeararound promotion, RWBY Chibi’s second season, new spinoff shows (RWBY Rewind and CRWBY), new merch released year around (like, nearly every month?), and regular tweets updating fans on its fifth season before it came out, as well as a panel at RTX London in addition to the ones at RTX Austin and Sydney. Rooster Teeth also announced that RWBY Volume 5′s schedule would be readjusted from the one Red vs. Blue suffered from in response to what happened in 15 and its fractured audience (which fans had kept warning them about) without mentioning Red vs. Blue directly. Before RWBY’s fifth season had even finished, RWBY Chibi’s third season was announced with a teaser image.

Which brings us to now, RWBY Chibi is airing again as well as an update confirming that its sixth season is in production with still no sign of RvB’s PSAs that were supposed to come out nor anything about what’s going on with 15′s DVD and soundtrack (with conflicting release dates from online retailers that weren’t the RT store that ranged between January and February, the former proved to be inaccurate and I’m skeptical if February will come through). We did, however, receive a single image and a synopsis for the next season (that actually reveals nothing other than that it takes place moments after 15), but that’s about it. On top of that, while RvB had a panel at RTX Sydney last year, this year it has no presence and instead will likely be grouped into the animation and FIRST look panels (which are usually centered on RWBY, and more than likely Rooster Teeth’s new shows, gen:LOCK and Nomad of Nowhere; which both received teaser trailers at the end of RWBY5′s finale). This was the tip of the iceberg for a lot of people who initially weren’t too concerned about it, since it’s a very obvious exclusion as RvB just had a panel last year.

And that’s everything I can recount right now, with everyone currently asking the same question: What’s going on with RvB?

Unfortunately, we don’t have an answer right now, but I wish we did.
