A note ...or, brief essay on common dolphin taxonomy

The common dolphin Delphinus delphis sensu lato has a near-cosmopolitan distribution, and considerable variability exists across the globe. Multiple species of common dolphin have been named, but in general there has only been one species recognized. In 1994, a study of common dolphins focused predominantly on the Eastern North Pacific found that the global offshore short-beaked common dolphin Delphinus delphis sensu stricto is different from the long-beaked common dolphin Delphinus capensis found in disjunct coastal areas around the world. The extremely-long-beaked and usually rather-dull-patterned Indo-Pacific common dolphin Delphinus tropicalis occupied a position as either a third species or a distinctive regional form of long-beaked common dolphin.

More detailed genetic studies in the 2010s did not uphold the short-beaked v. long-beaked dichotomy, however. A more complex evolutionary story is revealed by genetics, indicating that the long-beaked morphology developed repeatedly and independently in distinct coastal areas; thus, classification of all the world's long-beaked common dolphins as Delphinus capensis is erroneous as they do not all relate to one another to the exclusion of short-beaked common dolphins. Once again, all common dolphins were a single species.

Not all marine mammalogists were satisfied with solution of recognizing a single polymorphic species with a cosmopolitan distribution, particularly with the regard to the rather well-studied long-beaked common dolphins found on the Pacific coast of the US and Mexico. Despite overlapping geographically with short-beaked common dolphins, these long-beaked dolphins are distinguishable by external appearance, skull characters, mitochondrial DNA, and - to at least some degree - ecology and life history. In addition to the long beak, the broad, dark stripe running from gape to anus along the lower sides of these dolphins and often darkening the side of the face (as seen above) is one of the most recognizable characters. In 2024, a redescription of these dolphins considered them a separate species, the Eastern Pacific long-beaked common dolphin Delphinus bairdii. That paper notes that the Eastern Pacific long-beaked common dolphins off South America, with a >2500km gap from their northern counterparts, may warrant separation as a distinct subspecies. Another genetic study published in 2024 suggests that long-beaked common dolphins in the Western North Pacific may also belong to this species. That is the course followed on this blog - while the exact nature of these dolphins is in need of further study, recognizing such disjunct forms as at least separate subspecies is essentially the standard in other cetacean species.

The days of two globally-distributed common dolphin species are behind us, but what of the other long-beaked common dolphins besides those of the Eastern Pacific? The recent paper revalidating Delphinus bairdii suggests, as others have, that the long-beaked forms remaining at present in Delphinus delphis likely warrant taxonomic distinction. The evidence suggests to me each long-beaked form of common dolphin is probably best regarded as its own independent species, separate from the global short-beaked common dolphin. As tempting as it is to make this the course followed on this blog, I think I shall have to split the difference for now, given that there is evidence that some long-beaked populations are not reciprocally monophyletic with regards to sympatric short-beaks. The lack of complete genetic isolation from short-beaked common dolphins is not necessarily an indicator that specific distinction is unwarranted, but could indicate recent and ongoing speciation, possibly in response to geologically-recent climatic upheavals related to Pleistocene glacial cycles (...plus dolphins are not shy about hybridization). Though I believe further study will probably bear out recognition of additional common dolphin species besides D. delphis sensu stricto and D. bairdii, for now I will be listing other long-beaked common dolphins on this blog as Delphinus "delphis" to indicate their questionable taxonomic assignment.

Recall that the inatungulates blog is NOT a definitive source for taxonomy, and while I base my (generally splittery) taxonomic opinions on information and proposals that are in the literature, I am not beholden to any single source on taxonomy and the opinions here should not be treated as authoritative; hopefully, however, I will prompt an appreciation for (the sometimes-overlooked minutiae of?) ungulate diversity, and send curious readers to investigate the literature to form their own opinions from the available data.

Greece presented the timeline for offshore hydrocarbon exploration in the Aegean Sea and will be publishing a tender in the Official Journal of the European Union by the end of April, the Greek Minister of Energy said Thursday.

The timeline was presented by Stavros Papastavrou, Minister of the Environment and Energy, during the 10th Delphi Economic Forum, taking place this week. The announcement comes days after the Greek government accepted US energy giant Chevron’s interest in exploration for hydrocarbons off the island of Crete, which Pavastavrou highlighted, adding that this was the first ministerial decision related to Chevron’s bid. The second is due on Friday and publication of the tender will follow.

Conservation and capitalism

I just completed a lesson about Laws and normative for cetaceans conservation. It reminded me of this study on Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in Mediterranean Sea, where researches highlighted that the problem wasn't lack of legislation, but lack of enforcement of such legislation.

This is a very small extract from the study (btw the study is one of the best I found about the D. Delphis in the Mediterranean Sea)

Though the legal structures and conservation objectives for endangered species or populations, including the Mediterranean common dolphin, are already in place, effective financial support to undertake the necessary monitoring, management, and enforcement still need to materialize, in this region. This limitation is slowing progress in achiev ing the much-needed transnational cooperation or collaboration towards conservation of offshore, pelagic, and epipelagic species in international waters. [...] However, financial support to monitor and manage established national MPAs and to implement action plans for cetaceans (such as national action plans or Mediterranean-wide conservation plans; Bearzi et al., 2004; UN Environment/Mediterranean Action Plan Barcelona Convention Secretariat, 2017) is often missing, thus diminishing the effective value of these conservation efforts to mere ‘paper parks’ and ‘paper plans’.

A posse of proper ‘phins And another set of illustrations from last year. This time the “proper” dolphins - not too small, a regular dorsal fin, a good beak. Only the Risso’s is a bit out of line with their cute potheads but otherwise he was all alone. I had lots of fun with all of these. Spinners and Pantropcal spotted dolphin are a delight to draw always. This Pantropical spotted is from the Indian ocean, which tend to have fine black spots and very few white spots. The rough-toothed dolphin gave me some trouble - they’ve such odd proportions they’re hard to really nail down. I still don’t think he fully looks right, but that’s for a different illustration.

The common dolphins on top are very interesting to me: a good example of the diversity found within the single species of Delphinus delphis. Both are forms living around Southern Africa. The “longer beaked” form is larger, more elegant, and has gorgeous clear markings. They live off the Southeast coast, relatively close to shore. The “shorter beaked” form lives more to the west, in offshore waters. They are stouter and often with slightly vaguer markings. One day I’d love to see a study done on all the African forms of short-beaked common dolphins, they are so fascinating. If you move further up the west coast, around Angola, you’ll find a really strange form which is super dark and oddly proportioned. Wonder what’s up with those.

The Indian Ocean humpback dolphin is also an oddball, and a first for me. Love their cute faces and unique body shape. Not just the hump-back but also that strongly keeled peduncle. I hope you’ll enjoy them too!

Hey so yesterday I put out a piece of the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World but it didn’t include Cumae. Now, I’ve found one that does but it doesn’t have Etruria or Chalcis. But this bit of map is still absolutely wonderful and packed with cool shit. You can see Mount Vesuvius and the doomed cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but this region was very geologically active besides the volcano! Puteoli was named for its “putrid” sulfur nearby. Coincidentally, it would also become a major hub of the Western Mediterranean trade of garum, a sun-aged fish paste the Romans used like ketchup. There’s the Puteolan Gulf (“Sinus”), which is also called a “crater.” The world broadly meant “bowl” in Greek and the borrowed Latin and is the origin of our identical word.

Just under the word “Cumae” you’ll see “Avernus L.” in blue. That would be Lake Avernus, whose own sulfurousness would make it an entrance to the underworld in folklore, to the point that “Avernus” was a synonym for “Hades.” It’s name comes from the Greek α-Fόρνις, “a-wornis,” which means “Fuck Birds Lake” (my translation; more accurately “No-Bird L.”), because birds would die from the fumes if they flew over it. Here, or near it, is where Aeneas entered the underworld after the Trojan diaspora landed at Cumae. Just as Delphi in Greece had a female oracle, the Pythia, thrown into oracular fits by the noxious fumes of the area, Cumae had a similarly-inspired Sibyl.

Cumae was the trading hub-city founded by the Chalcidians once they’d established themselves as friendly traders among the Italian peoples, especially the Etruscans. But, before that, when the Euboean Greeks were wary of potential hostility, they had a trading hub called Pithekoussai on the island just offshore that they abandoned after their colonization at Cumae.

There’s this common misconception that antique Italy and Greece were separate, but the Greeks colonized much of southern Italy and Sicily. Cetaceans of Nicaragua Part I

This was another big and rather fun commission I got to work on a while back. A series of 16 illustrations depicting the cetacean life of Nicaragua. Since this commission some more species, such as killer whales and dwarf sperm whales, have been recorded. These illustrations were made on small scale and painted rather quickly, which made for an oddly enjoyable painting process with some surprisingly satisfying results. My favourites amongst this first batch (the smaller dolphins) are the pantropical spotted, short-beaked common, Fraser’s and Guyana dolphin. Check the captions for everyone’s species names!

Delphi Retirees Thank Trump for Action to Restore Their Pensions: ‘Best News Since Nightmare Began’ by Obama-Biden

Former Delphi workers, who had their pensions slashed in the Obama-Biden administration’s auto bailout, are thanking President Trump for his order that seeks a solution in restoring the lost pensions.

In 2009, as part of the Obama-Biden administration’s taxpayer-funded bailout of General Motors (GM), the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) terminated the pension plans of about 20,0000 non-unionized Delphi workers. In some cases, workers had their pensions gutted by as much as 75 percent.

A federal report in 2013 detailed that the Delphi workers would likely have their pensions cut by an estimated $440 million. Meanwhile, GM topped off unionized Delphi workers’ pensions at a cost of about $1 billion.

This week, Trump signed a memorandum that orders federal agencies to devise a plan on how to restore the Delphi workers’ slashed pensions over the next 90 days. Den Black with the Delphi Salaried Retirees Association (DSRA), which has been fighting for their pensions since the auto bailout, praised the decision.

“This is the best news since this nightmare began 11 years ago,” Black wrote in a statement:

The DSRA Board of Directors and members sincerely appreciate and are grateful to President Trump for his intervention to achieve closure of this ordeal. We are very thankful to Congressman [Mike] Turner for his ongoing leadership and initiative as well as to congressional representatives from both parties who in the past month signed a letter urging the President to intervene.

“This President is showing concern for all American workers,” Black said. “DSRA members never gave up. We appreciate his attention and help.”

Bruce Gump, the vice chairman of the DSRA, said Delphi retirees are offering their “encouragement and prayers for all involved to expedite a successful conclusion.”

“We played by the rules. The involuntary termination of our pensions was wrong,” Gump said. “It did not have to happen. This means so much to the future of these retirees, their families and communities in many states.”

In 2012, federal documents unveiled how the Obama-Biden administration’s Treasury Department worked to gut the pensions of the Delphi workers. In other emails, PBGC officials indicated they had the green light from the Obama-Biden administration to slash the pensions.

Those involved with the pension-slashing scheme, such as Tim Geithner, Steven Rattner, and Ron Bloom, are currently pouring thousands of dollars into Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden’s campaign.

Delphi, which has since split into Aptiv and Delphi Technologies, announced in 2006 that it would shutter 21 of its 29 plants in the United States — offshoring some 20,000 U.S. jobs to Mexico, China, and other foreign countries.

At the time, Delphi employed nearly 50,000 Americans, who earned about $30 an hour on the assembly line. Now, workers in Mexico for the company earn about $1 an hour.
