most writing about "popularism" mostly notes (correctly!) that the dems have a bunch of cultural issues that they skew quite left on that are unpopular which hurts them in the election, but then generally go and then define those that they skew left on to be ~basically everything around their own plan for the democratic administration

did the dems not really have a response for the (very obvious!) case where the republicans bring up trans issues and start hammering them as extremists? yeah. probably. did immigration hurt them? yeah, probably

but if you're writing about how the dems need to "moderate" while being the author of a book called quite literally one billion americans, or argue about how they need to focus on raising the birth rate (how?) or talk about how we need to spend political capital on "winning the AI race with china" or preparing the population mentally for the possibility of kinetic war in the taiwan strait then like. come on man. i too want everyone elses dumb unpopular ideas to move aside so that we could hide and push mine
