Do you prefer screams, gutturals or clean singing? 

I love all three, but I have to MARGINALLY give it cleans, because they've been my main instrument since I was a little fella

Punk Jumps or Head banging?

It was head banging, but then I cut all my hair off so by default, punk jumps 

Vocalists that inspired you to start?

My favourite vocalist of all time is Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance, but for Godzilla I'm heavily inspired and influenced by Jesse Leech, Ben Read and Sam Carter

Top 3 favourite lyric lines?

- Life's not out to get you, despite the things you've been through, because what you give is what you get and it doesn't make sense to make do 

- The entire chorus of "Disloyal Order Of The Water Buffaloes" by Fall Out Boy 

- The entire second verse to "Diaper Money" by The Lonely Island 

What are you currently listening to?

A lot of Ed Sheeran, the soundtrack to Beauty and the Beast, Heavenshore by In Dread Response, Vestige by Seas Of Conflict anod a lot of my own bands because other wise I WILL forget the lyrics. (Both sets of my band mates will vouch for this)

A Quickie with Declan from Seas of Conflict

What's better in a song, a breakdown or a riff?   I love both if they are well thought out. If I had to choose I would say you can't go wrong with a good riff. 

Favourite non-metal guitarist?   Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (The Mars Volta). 

What's your pre gig warm up?  I'll usually go somewhere quiet and mentally get in the 'zone'. I'll also go and get the fingers ready by playing some guitar before we hit the stage.

Do you prefer playing Hometown shows or out of town shows? I really enjoy playing in my hometown but I love getting to go on road trips with my best friends. It's awesome traveling and seeing how beautiful New Zealand really is because it's easy to forget sometimes.

What are you currently listening to? I've been loving a lot of bands recently but I've mainly been listening to Night Versus, The Safety Fire, Code Orange, Plini, and Snarky Puppy.

A Quickie with Matt from Set on End

What’s the band or guitarist that influenced you to start playing guitar? 

Actually what got me into guitar was my mother had a classical guitar that I used to noodle around on as a kid, but at intermediate school A friend of mine's older brother was in a rock band and we would watch them rehearse on the weekend. My mate learnt bass  and we found a drummer on the other side of the school. 1st song we performed as 11 year olds at a school Assembly was Would from Alice in Chains 

Biggest influence on your guitar playing? 

Clint Lowery from Sevendust. "Home" blew my mind when it came out and is probably my number 1 album fav. He plays with a percussive style and after watching his doco where he spoke how his mother couldn't get finance on a drum kit so came home with a guitar I understand why, I'm a drummer at heart so I can relate. I would love to play drums in a band 1 day, just not lug them around.  

Desert Island album? 

Literal desert island album would be something from Tool or Jakob where I could just buzz out, contemplate life and the pineal gland. 

Other than your guitar, what couldn’t you play a show without? 

Axe fx, so compact and versatile, too many features. Anyone with beef over no tubes only have no ear for dialling one in properly.

5 Questions w/ Doug McHardlane (Bloodnut)

It’s NZ Music Month so we talked with NZs Resident Head Ginge Doug (Bassist/Vocalist of All Ginge Trio Bloodnut) about all things NZ Music Related.

1. Favourite NZ Band?  

Fav Nz band of all time still remains Evil Priest. Followed in no particular order by Beastwars,  stoner band Datura, Old loaves are awesome and so are Lord of Tigers. Honorable mention: House of Capricorn.

2. NZ bands you want to gig with?

We'll we've already ticked Beastwars and Lord of tigers off the list so next up on our bands we'd love to play with list is HLAH and Shihad now that they've gone all fuzzy and loud.

3. Favourite NZ gig you’ve been to? 

The old NZHC days still reign supreme in my mind for best NZ gigs.  Seeing bands like Evil Priest, DSM and balance in a shitty dive bar with bouncy wooden floors.

4. One NZ band you wish you were in? 

I know it's a bit of a cop out but I'm currently in my ideal band. Bloodnut fits me like very form fitting underwear. Cups em just right

5. Favourite venue to play at? 

That's tough. I love the sound at Kings Arms, The feel and hospitality of Lucha Lounge and the Dank of Whammy bar. Therefore I refuse to choose. Alienating one or all 3 of those venues would be a terrible idea haha
